It’s hard to believe, but we’re already at the halfway point of the 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park. With two rounds now in the books, here’s everything you need to know as the third round gets underway on Saturday in San Francisco.

1. Moving Day should be very interesting

With some fresh names atop the leaderboard, Moving Day should provide some excellent drama. Haotong Li posted a 65 early on Friday morning, bringing his two-day total to eight under par, and no one from the afternoon wave was able to catch him. With an afternoon tee time looming and the spotlight blazing, will Li keep his momentum going in the third round?

Another unfamiliar name in contention — at least for fans in the U.S. — is 35-year-old European Tour player Mike Lorenzo-Vera. His rounds of 66-68 brought him to six under and only two shots shy of Li’s lead.

Lorenzo Vera shares second place with a bevy of other big names, including defending champion Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, Jason Day, Justin Rose and Daniel Berger, all of whom trail Li by just two shots.

2. Three-peat watch continues

Brooks Kopeka remains in contention into Round 3, so his hopes of completing a three-peat of PGA Championship victories lives on. Koepka is six under — only two strokes behind Li.

3. Assessing Tiger’s chances

After a tough second round, Tiger finished with two-day total of even par — eight shots off the lead. While a run for the Wanamaker looks unlikely at this point, it’s still possible for Tiger to post a low number on Saturday that gets him into a late afternoon tee time on Sunday. And hey, you never know with golf, but one thing’s for sure: the Big Cat will need to find a way to warm up that putter if he wants to have any chance.

4. Notables to miss the cut

Seventy-nine players will continue playing this weekend, but several big names will not be among them. The cut was set at one over, and Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Tyrrell Hatton and Sergio Garcia are among those who found themselves on the wrong side of the line on Friday.

5. PGA Club pros shut out

Every year, 20 club professionals earn the chance to play in their national championship alongside the best players in the world. Last year, three of the 20 played well enough to tee it up on the weekend at mighty Bethpage Black, but this year, the best score of the bunch was from Alex Beach, who finished four over overall, and missed the cut by three.

6. Saturday weather

Friday’s conditions were picture-perfect, and Saturday’s forecast looks similar. Early morning tee times will face cloudy conditions and temperatures in the mid- to high-50s. The sun is expected to shine brightly around 10 a.m. local time, with the temperature peaking at 65 degrees between 2 and 3 p.m. The wind will be relatively calm, gusting between nine and 15 mph.

7. Best weekend storyline to follow

There are more than a handful of young players who are within striking distance of claiming their first major title, but with Woods likely out of the mix, there is one primary storyline that trumps all others: Can Koepka dig deep for his third-straight Wanamaker trophy? It’s never been done in the stroke-play era — and we can’t wait to watch him try.

That means there’s now one more publicly accessible, major-championship course that recreational golfers can actually play. The best part? You can get a tee time at TPC Harding Park for under $100!

It turns out, there are plenty of other courses that have hosted major championships that can also be played for the bargain price. Check out the full list of major championship venues that you can play for less than $100 below.

Bethpage (Black), Farmingdale, N.Y.

The brawny, two-time U.S. Open host, and 2019 PGA Championship venue — is a smokin’ deal, but unfortunately, you have to be a New York state resident to enjoy a weekday rate of only $65. For out-of-staters, it’s $130.

Torrey Pines (South), La Jolla, Calif.

Like Bethpage, Torrey Pines, host of the 2008 U.S. Open, offers a sweet discount for its locals. San Diego city residents can snag a weekday tee time for $63, while everyone else must pay $202.

The Donald Ross Course at French Lick, French Link, Ind.

The 1924 PGA Championship host can be played for only $75 after 3 p.m. — and that includes a cart!

Seaview (Bay and Pines courses), Galloway, N.J.

The 1942 PGA Championship was played at what was then Seaview Country Club. Those holes now comprise the Bay and Pines courses, each of which can be played for various rates under $100.

Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, Shawnee on Delaware, Penn.

During the PGA Championship’s matchplay heyday, Paul Runyan won at Shawnee. There are three nines on offer, and while a certain nine can’t be guaranteed at the time of booking, a weekday tee time is easily gettable for $75.

Tanglewood Park (Championship), Clemmons, N.C.

Weekday rates are only $49 at this 1974 PGA Championship venue, where Lee Trevino raised the trophy.

Prince’s Golf Club, Sandwich, England

The 1932 Open Championship was played at Prince’s, and you can tee it up there too! But to snag the ultra-reasonable rate of 50-60 GBP ($65.44-$78.53), you’ll have to play sometime between November and April.

Eisenhower Park (Red course), East Meadow, N.Y.

Though residents get a bit of a break on green fees at this 1926 PGA Championship venue, anyone can get a tee time here for between $42 and $70.

Keller hosted two PGAs (1932 and 1954), and you can play a weekday round there for only $47.

Cedar Crest Golf Course, Dallas, Texas

Only $41 to play this 1927 PGA Championship venue? Sign us up!

Musselburgh Links, East Lothian, Scotland

Described as the oldest course in the world, Musselburgh hosted six Open Championships — all in the late 1800s (1874, 1877, 1880, 1883, 1886 and 1889), and you can play for only 16.50 GBP — that’s only $21.60!

TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, Calif.

In the weeks following this year’s PGA Championship, lucky residents of San Francisco can play TPC Harding Park for only $80! For the rest of us, it’s $200-$300.

*Note: Belmont Golf Course in Richmond, Va., hosted the 1949 PGA Championship and would appear on this list; however, the course closed on January 1, 2020, to undergo a comprehensive redesign and renovation. A reopening is planned for May 2021.

With one round in the books, here’s everything you need to know as the second round gets underway on Friday in California.

1. The leaderboard is already fantastic

With 19 players within two shots of the lead after Round 1, the next three rounds are sure to be electric. Former PGA champion Jason Day and three-time Tour winner Brendon Todd lead the way after firing rounds of 5-under 65, with defending champion Brooks Koepka only one shot back at 4-under.

The list of big names within striking distance is huge, and includes Martin Kaymer, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Shane Lowry, Patrick Reed, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau and Tiger Woods.

Luckily for Bryson DeChambeau, he had a backup driver in his car.

2. Bryson finally got a ruling to go his way

When Bryson DeChambeau unexpectedly snapped the shaft on his driver when he leaned on it to pick up his tee after after smashing yet another bombed drive, there was a moment when fans worried that he wouldn’t be allowed to replace the club. But thanks to a recent USGA rule change allowing broken clubs to be replaced if they were not broken in anger, DeChambeau was able to send someone to retrieve one of the backup drivers he keeps in his car. DeChambeau eventually signed for 2-under 68.

3. Three-peat watch is on!

Just two weeks ago, Brooks Kopeka’s 2020 major prospects were looking bleak, and even his presence at the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs looked questionable. But a “heated” practice session after his missed cut at the 3M Open helped him zero in on a swing flaw. After learning that he needed to work on getting back to his left side, he was a new man, contending to the end of last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, where he eventually finished T2. And after firing a first-round 66 (4-under) at TPC Harding Park on Thursday, Kopeka is only one shot behind Day and Todd’s lead, and his quest for a three-peat at the PGA Championship (Kopeka won at Bellerive in 2018 and Bethpage Black in 2019) now looks downright possible, and perhaps even likely. Will he do it? We’ll have to stay tuned.

              Getty Images

4. Tiger Woods is in the mix

Worries about Tiger Woods’ ability to perform in the cool San Francisco temperatures this week appear to have been put to rest by his round of 2-under 68 on Thursday. Not only was Woods crushing it off the tee, he also managed to make five birdies, which were unfortunately mitigated by three bogeys. He avoided any round-ruining disasters, though, and only trails Day and Todd’s lead by three shots heading into Round 2.

5. Can Brendon Todd continue his stellar run?

Brendon Todd is already a strong candidate for Player of the Year after winning twice this season, but as a co-leader in a major championship, the 35-year-old is entering uncharted territory. Can he hang on? Time will tell.

6. Friday’s weather forecast looks perfect

Thursday’s weather was foggy and damp in the morning, followed by bright sunshine and a pretty staunch breeze, ranging from 15 to 20 mph. On Friday, expect more of the same. Early morning tee times will be met with cloudy conditions and temperatures in the mid-50s. The sun is forecast to come out around noon, when the temperature will rise to a high of 64 degrees, and the wind is expected to blow between 10 and 17 mph.

7. Will a PGA club pro make the cut?

Yes, it happened at Bethpage Black last year when three of the 20 club pros in the field earned the right to play the weekend in their national championship. The low 70 players and ties get to play on Saturday and Sunday at the PGA Championship, and after Round 1, there are three club pros in that vicinity of the leaderboard, which is about 1-over: Bob Sowards, Benny Cook and Rob Labritz. Labritz, perhaps not so coincidentally, was among the three who made the cut last year at Bethpage, eventually finishing T60.

But it didn’t take long for Tiger to exceed them in the first round on Thursday.

Woods opened his day on the par-5 10th hole with a few squirrely shots — a drive that jumped into the left rough, followed by a fairway wood that caught the grass and sent his ball careening well to the right of the green.

But Tiger cleaned up his nervous start with a vintage flop shot that set up an opening birdie.

At the difficult par-4 13th hole, he added an even bigger exclamation point.

After hitting a solid drive into the right side of the fairway, Tiger knocked his 180-yard approach shot safely on the front of the green.

Then, standing 33 yards from the cup, the 15-time major champion hit a confident stroke and watched his ball dive into the hole for an unexpected second birdie.

Without any fans in attendance, the dramatic putt was met with deafening silence at Harding Park, and Tiger didn’t bother to add a fist-pump. The birdie also tied him for the very, very early lead at two under with a host of other players, including Dustin Johnson

Check out the putt below.

We’ve seen little of Tiger Woods, who remains the reigning Masters champion, since February. Tiger teed it up in just one event since the PGA Tour returned to action, with mixed results. But Woods is confident heading into the PGA and has hopes of capturing his fifth career Wanamaker trophy on Sunday.

Woods will get his tournament started early in the first round, teeing off at 11:33 a.m. ET (8:33 a.m. local time) alongside two players who are among the betting favorites: world No. 1 Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy. Thomas’ ranking speaks for itself, as does his 2017 PGA victory, while McIlroy will look to turn his game around after some recent struggles.

More often than not, when the world’s best players tee it up at a major championship, it’s on a course that’s not easily available for public play.

For example, this year’s other major venues, like Augusta National, home of the Masters, and Winged Foot, site of the U.S. Open, are about as exclusive and private as it gets. But that’s not the case with TPC Harding Park.

TPC Harding Park is public

This year’s PGA Championship venue, TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, is a municipal course, meaning it’s owned by the city and county of San Francisco. And unlike other publicly accessible major venues like Pebble Beach or Erin Hills, TPC Harding Park is as affordable as a top-tier course gets.

The course’s championship layout is located in a prime location on a San Francisco peninsula, surrounded by the pristine shoreline of Lake Merced. The course was originally designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting in 1925.

TPC Harding Park rates and greens fees

If you’re a San Francisco resident, you can claim the best deal of all when it comes to greens fees at TPC Harding Park. Morning tee times on weekdays start at only $80 per player, while non-residents will face a significantly steeper rate of $300. If you’re not a San Francisco resident but still live in a Bay Area city like Oakland, San Jose, or other surrounding cities, you can still get a bit of a break with a rate of $200 (proof of residency is required at check-in).

Beginning at 3 p.m., weekday rates drop to $63 for San Francisco residents but stay the same for others.

On weekends, San Francisco residents can expect to pay $97 until 3 p.m., when the price drops to $76. Non-city resident rates remain the same, at $200 and $300, respectively.

You also have to pay an extra $15 fee to book a tee time between eight and 30 days in advance, and renting a cart will set you back an additional $35 per player.

TPC Harding Park Fleming 9 rates

Did you know there’s also a short course at TPC Harding Park? The Fleming 9 was added in 1961 and is a 2,165-yard par-30 course that features six par-3s and three par-4s.

The course is home to the First Tee of San Francisco and can be played for a great price. The standard rate is $33 on weekdays and $38 on weekends. San Francisco residents get a break of $28 and $30, respectively, while senior resident rates are $22 and $27, and junior resident rates are $14 and $17.

At 11:33 a.m. ET on Thursday, the grouping with perhaps the most firepower hits their opening tee shots on the 10th hole. That group includes new world No. 1 Justin Thomas, who rose to the top of the OWGR with a win last week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He’ll be joined by two-time PGA champion Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods. For Woods, it will be only his fifth round since the Tour returned in early June.

Another group to look out for with some major credentials is the grouping of defending champion Brooks Koepka, reigning U.S. Open champ Gary Woodland and reigning Open champion Shane Lowry. Koepka will have history on his mind as he goes for his third-straight PGA Championship win. They tee off for the first round two spots ahead of Tiger’s group at 11:11 a.m. ET.

The first major of the season gets underway this week: the PGA Championship, at TPC Harding Park. The TPC network is owned by the PGA Tour, but Harding Park belongs to the city of San Francisco. Meaning, it’s a muni. But you probably knew that. And since we’d like you to keep reading, here are nine other things about Harding Park that you might not know.

1. It has the Same Pedigree as a Nearby Private Club

The closing stretch of Harding Park looks across Lake Merced at the green fingerlings of another golf club: the Olympic Club, no less, a storied private venue and five-time host of the U.S. Open. The Olympic Club was designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting and — guess what? — so was Harding Park. The duo’s design fee for Harding Park was $300. That was in 1925. On weekends these days, $200 is the base fee that out-of-towners pay to play the course.

2. There’s a Presidential Connection

And not just in the form of the Presidents Cup, which Harding Park hosted in 2009. The course is named for Warren G. Harding, the 29th president of the United States and an avid golfer, who died of a heart attack in 1923 while staying at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

3. It Has Another 9

From a bird’s eye view, the routing at Harding Park resembles the cross-section of a cinnamon roll, with the front nine folded inside the back nine. And folded within them both? Another course. The Fleming 9. A nine-hole, par-30 layout named for Jack Fleming, a golf architect and former city golf caretaker for San Francisco.

4. It’s Been a Grooming Ground for Greats

Johnny Miller. George Archer. Bob Rosburg. Tony Lema. That’s a partial roster of the future major champions who cut their teeth at Harding Park. Another was Ken Venturi, who grew up in the neighborhood and whose father, Fred, ran the Harding Park pro shop for years. A stern man, Fred Venturi once bought his son a Model-A Ford, bestowing the gift with one condition: young Ken could only drive the car to school or to the course.

5. Amateur Hour is Serious Here

Along with Lincoln Park, another San Francisco muni, Harding Park is the longtime host of the San Francisco City Golf Championship, which locals simply call “The City.” The first City was played in 1917, and it hasn’t skipped a year since, making it one of the longest consecutively held amateur golf tournaments in the country. The list of City winners — Venturi, Archer, Juli Inkster and on — is impressive. But so is the roster of players — Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Scott McCarron, among others — who tried but never won it. In 1956, in the tournament’s most celebrated iteration, the finals of the City pitted Venturi against his pal, E. Harvie Ward, the reigning U.S. Amateur (and City) champion. Some 10,000 fans swarmed Harding Park for their 36-hole match, where Venturi, speaking in a partly playful stage whisper on the first tee, told Ward: “You’ve stolen my city and I want it back, so I’m going to whip you.” Which he did, closing out his buddy, 5 and 4.

6. It Was Once a Regular Tour Stop

Throughout the 1960s, Harding Park hosted the Lucky International Open (the exception was 1967, when the tournament wasn’t held), a PGA Tour event that produced an A-list of winners that included Jackie Burke, Chi-Chi Rodriguez, George Archer, Ken Venturi and Billy Casper. In 1969, the tournament’s final year, the event was won by Steve Spray, an ominous name for a golfer who hit it laser straight.

7. It Has Experienced Dramatic Ups and Downs

In the 1980s, after many golden years, Harding Park began a period of steep decline, the victim of familiar municipal course indignities. Budgets dwindled. Course conditions decayed. A low point came in 1998, when the U.S. Open was held just across the lake at the Olympic Club. And Harding Park was used as a parking lot for the event.

8. A Blue-Collar Course Got a Blue-Blood Boost

Frank “Sandy” Tatum was a Stanford graduate and winner of the 1942 NCAA individual golf championship who went on to become the president of the United States Golf Association. He was a member of Cypress Point, San Francisco Golf Club and Pine Valley, among other famously private courses. Bluer blood than his was hard to find. But Tatum was also a rabid fan of Harding Park, and a frequent participant in the City. It pained him to see the course in its decline. It was Tatum who spearheaded a multi-million dollar renovation of Harding Park, an ambitious project that went over budget and polarized opinions around the city, though few are griping now about the result, which was completed in 2003. Tatum died in 2017, at age 96, but his memory endures at Harding Park. The clubhouse, which is named in his honor, has a plaque that bears his likeness out front.

9. Many Eagles Landed Here, All Made By One Man

Tatum’s is not the only name memorialized at Harding Park. Another is Ovid Seyler, who was known as “The Institution” because, well, he was one — a longtime regular at Harding Park and four-time winner of the club championship. Cool achievement, right? Perhaps even cooler is the fact that over a 25-plus-year span of playing golf at Harding Park, Seyler eagled every hole on the course. A concrete bench near the putting green pays tribute to Seyler, and a feat that no one else is known to have pulled off.

The PGA Championship begins with the first round on Thursday, Aug. 6, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 9. All four rounds will air on TV with coverage split between ESPN and CBS.

This will be the first year that ESPN carries the PGA Championship, thanks to a recent rights deal they struck. The cable network will air six hours each day of the first and second rounds. On Saturday and Sunday, ESPN will carry three hours of early round coverage. ESPN’s coverage will be anchored by Scott Van Pelt with help from lead analyst David Duval. (ESPN+ will stream extensive coverage of all four rounds online. You can see our full PGA Championship streaming schedule here, and sign up for an ESPN+ account here.)

Once the cut is made and the pressure is ratcheted up, CBS will take over the broadcast. The familiar faces of the CBS Sports TV team, including Jim Nantz and Nick Faldo, will air six hours of coverage on Saturday and Sunday focused on the leaders.
