Joaquin Niemann is on a record-setting pace through three days of play at the Genesis Invitational. At 19 under, the 23-year-old currently holds the lowest 54-hole score ever at Riviera, an event dating back to the mid-20th century. Niemann enters Sunday’s final round holding a three-stroke lead over the remainder of the field. A win on Sunday would be the second PGA Tour victory for the Chilean-born pro, who has also added two playoff losses. The good news for Niemann? He has only one player (Cameron Young) within six strokes of his mark heading into the final round.

Further back, Viktor Hovland (-13), Justin Thomas (-12), Collin Morikawa (-11) and last week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler (-10) all enter Sunday in need of brilliant final rounds AND some help in order to launch themselves back into contention.

Max Homa walked up to his ball after his tee shot on the first hole of Sunday’s playoff at the Genesis Invitational and immediately stood over it. To his and his ball’s left on the 315-yard, par-4 10th hole at Riviera Country Club, 70 feet away, was the hole. To his ball’s right, a few inches away, less than the size of an iron head, was a tree. Homa took an imaginary swing with just his arms.    

Which, for a while at least, looked like his only swing. 

“Oh right up against the tree by the looks of things,” analyst Frank Nobilo said during CBS’ broadcast on Sunday. 

“Absolutely snookered,” analyst Nick Faldo said. “Oh my goodness. Holy smokes.” 

“Can he get a club on it?” Nobilo said.

“Can he do anything, Frank?” Faldo said. 

For the next 112 seconds, Homa did many things. Then one thing. 

Homa, after his initial assessment, walked up to the green, about 55 feet away, walked a few steps off and tossed away some debris. This would be where he’d try to land his ball. He walked back to the green, then walked back to his ball and took another faux swing before being handed his 50-degree wedge from his caddie, Joe Greiner. 

With the tree impeding a traditional, straight-on shot, Homa would stand at an angle slightly behind and left of the tree, turn the toe of his club inward, or hood it, hook his chip and let it spin left.

“I think what he can try and do is hood a sand wedge and maybe try and hook it out toward the front of the green or maybe just right of the green from this angle and then go from there,” analyst Trevor Immelman said on the broadcast. “There’s no way he can put any kind of normal golf swing on this.”

Homa took a practice swing with the wedge, then another. He moved behind the ball, and  Greiner walked up to where it might land. Homa took another imaginary swing, then he and Greiner talked. The shot was settled.  

“I’m going to try to pull it over,” Homa said.  

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Greiner said. 

Yeah.

Homa, after two more practice swings and two looks up, chipped it 15 yards, it kicked to the left and rolled to within 11 feet. Homa smiled at Greiner, grabbed his putter and took off its head cover.  

“What a cool shot,” Immelman said.  

“A heck of a shot there,” Nobilo said. “Tremendous from Homa.”

“Obviously had a weird looking shot, but I had a shot, which is cool,” Homa said afterward. “Took a 50-degree out and just hooded it as much as I could to get it started as left as I could with some tumble spin, because going into that kikuyu uphill it all sticks, so I tried to land it as low into the hill as I could to get it rolling.”

Two strokes and about a half-hour before his chip, Homa had missed a 3-foot putt on 18 that would have given him a near-insurmountable lead, and he and Tony Finau would go to the playoff. Five strokes and about 15 minutes after his chip, Homa won. He would miss his birdie putt on 10, but parred the second hole of the playoff, while Finau bogeyed it. 

“Ten’s a crazy hole,” Homa said. “Talor Gooch and I were talking about it on 11 today during the regulation round. A lot of people don’t like it; I love it. I think golf could use a little chaos at times. It’s probably not a perfect hole, but it’s fun; a lot can go on. You kind of aim at these trees and kind of see what happens.”

Max Homa won the Genesis Invitational on Sunday at Riviera Golf Course after a two-hole playoff against Tony Finau. Homa, a Titleist staffer, used a bag full of 14 Titleist clubs and a Titleist golf ball. Most notably, Homa recently switched to a new Scotty Cameron Phantom X 11.5 putter at the 2021 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Max Homa, during Saturday’s third round of the Genesis Invitational, had 81 feet to the hole on his second shot on the 304-yard, par-4 10th hole at Riviera Country Club. Between him and the pin, Homa had about 15 feet of green to work with, and between the pin and the back of the green, there was just another 15 feet. 

Oh, and Homa was in the right greenside bunker, his ball was a yard from the lip, and he had about 60 feet of sand in front of him. 

And that wind that had earlier delayed play for four hours? It was at his back. 

And the greens were dry and fast. 

“Yeah, Max Homa. Pffft,” analyst Frank Nobilo said on the CBS broadcast.  

“Surely there’s no way he can keep this on the green,” analyst Trevor Immelman said. 

Homa lofted his ball out, it bounced on the fringe and rolled to within 7 feet of the cup. He would roll in the birdie putt.   

“Got it clean,” Nobilo said. “Oh.” 

“Ha, ha, ha, ha. Best shot I’ve seen today,” Immelman said.  

One PGA Tour pro and a few of his followers on Twitter went further. 

Unlike the shot, “today” fell short. 

“Hey @PGATOUR stat guys…how many people in the history of Riv have hit it in the front of the front bunker on #10, got it up and down for birdie, and left it short of the pin on the green down wind? Nvm I know…it’s 1. 1 person. That was F@%&ING UNBELIEVABLE @maxhoma23,” Mark Hubbard tweeted Saturday night. 

“Hard to describe how great that shot was,” @DavidMcMichael4 tweeted. 

“Best bunker shot at Riviera, I’ve ever seen, on any hole, all my years out there as Fire Marshall from 2004-2018. You’re the pick at the “ Watch Party “.” @TapRoomCraig1 tweeted. 

“That bunker shot scared me and I was only following on shot tracker.” @Heavy_C tweeted. 

Two hours after Hubbard’s tweet, Homa tipped his cap to the virtual applause.

“Haha thanks Hubbs!!” he tweeted.

A crowded leaderboard (and crowded day for golf) greet Sunday at Riviera for the final round of the 2021 Genesis Invitational. Below is everything you need to know about the tournament’s purse information, including payout and winner’s share.

Genesis Invitational final round preview

It’s Sunday at the Genesis Invitational and we’ve got an absolutely packed day for golf. The top half of the field will play somewhere between 18 and 27 holes on Sunday after third-round play was suspended due to darkness on Saturday.

As for where things stand on the leaderboard, Sam Burns leads (as he has for the majority of the week) by a handful of strokes over the remainder of a crowded leaderboard. Burns (-9) is up by two strokes over the remainder of the field as he makes the turn during his third round of play Sunday. With just about 25 holes to protect his lead (and plenty of challenges and challengers lurking), Burns has his work cut out for him to emerge victorious Sunday afternoon.

Jordan Spieth is once again in the thick of things, though high winds and fading sun eventually played a role in five bogeys throughout his third round Saturday. Spieth (-4) has his work cut out for him to climb back into contention Sunday.

Also in the mix is Dustin Johnson. The World No. 1 is 7 under, two strokes back of Burns and alongside Matthew Fitzpatrick and Max Homa in a tie for second place.

Tyler McCumber hit his tee shot Saturday on the par-3 6th hole at Riviera Country Club, and when he knew his ball would drop near its target 190 yards away, he slid his club down through his hands. The iron slipped through his right fingers as smoothly as his shot — he hit his ball to within 12 feet. The slide on the left found a little friction.

McCumber was contending at the Genesis Invitational, four days after he had accidentally ripped off half the fingernail on his left index finger, then opted for a procedure, then wrapped his finger, shoved it through a hole he made in his golf glove and teed it up. But not everything was going smoothly. 

“Making good work of it, though,” analyst and former pro Notah Begay said Friday on Golf Channel’s Golf Central. “Maybe allowing him to stay focused on the golf and try and forget the pain because he’s got to be in a lot of discomfort making those golf swings with that big bandage on his finger.”

Contending, not surprisingly, can be a cure-all.

McCumber and his nine-and-a-half fingernails opened with a four-under 67 on Thursday, followed it up with a 68 on Friday and started Saturday in the final grouping. He was two under through six before three bogeys and a double put him six shots behind leader Sam Burns when their rounds were suspended due to darkness on the 13th.

“You just kind of adapt a bit,” McCumber said Friday. “It’s pretty wild how quickly the body does adapt to things.”

On Tuesday morning, for example, McCumber’s fingernail was hanging from his finger. 

Before leaving his hotel room for Riviera, McCumber said he opened a sliding window, it caught his finger, and “it went underneath the back of the nail bed and lifted half of the back of the nail up.” 

“It was pretty torn up,” he said. 

That night, McCumber was hitting balls on the range. He had finally gotten to Riviera, where the surgeon on site was a hand specialist with a question. 

“So he gave me the option: He said we can bandage it up — obviously you can’t play because it’s just too painful — or we can do a procedure where we just rip off the nail, but half of the nail is still intact. So he numbed the finger and ripped off the nail,” said McCumber, who also had the procedure videotaped. “Basically I was able to kind of see if I could hit balls that next day and I was.”

Which surprised him. McCumber had booked a flight from Los Angeles, then changed it after the procedure. He said he’s really had to adjust only his left-hand glove. It now has four-and-a-quarter fingers — pinkie, ring, middle and thumb, with a little remaining for the index. His bandaged finger pops through a hole. The glove underwent a surgery a little after McCumber did.

“Obviously I’m kind of fortunate that that finger is, the pressure’s only really kind of right there on the back of your hand,” McCumber said Thursday. “So maybe not quite as forceful as I felt like I was, maybe a little lighter grip, but that might not be a bad thing.”

Sunday, five days after his finger procedure, McCumber will play at least 24 holes. Begay said he’s been “a remarkable reflection on being tough.” 

“I mean, you have to tough it out,” Begay said Friday on Golf Channel. “You don’t think of golfers as tough. But going out there for four and a half hours and just having the vibration of the club, just dealing with it and trying to focus on it, it could be the right type of distraction for him this week.”

Jordan Spieth widened his stance and opened it up slightly. He looked back, then hit his tee shot. Some seconds later, Spieth laughed with the players and caddies around him. 

His ball went about 40 yards up. And about 30 yards forward. 

“It is blowing so hard that the players are amusing themselves, hitting these boomerang shots out on the range,” announcer Jim Nantz said during CBS’ broadcast of the third round of the Genesis Invitational. 

When you’re a PGA Tour golfer, and life throws you a curveball, you try to hit them. At a little after 10 a.m. local time in Los Angeles, play was suspended due to gusts so great that they blew golf balls off greens at Riviera Country Club, and there was uncertainty whether there would be golf into the afternoon. As they waited out the first wind delay since the 2015 Open Championship, players played around.

Most hit on the range or talked. California kid Max Homa, CBS cameras showed, lay on his golf bag and talked on his cell. Spieth hit into the wind. As did Jon Rahm. 

The world No. 2 opened his stance and took a full swing toward the left. His ball went about 50 yards left to right and about 20 yards forward across its 8-second journey. 

“It’s so easy to do when it’s howling,” analyst Nick Faldo said on the broadcast. “You could hit a 9-iron, and it would bounce and finish behind you.”

Keegan Bradley, on the 304-yard, par-4 10th at Riviera Country Club, had a 59-foot putt for birdie. 

He had a 44-foot pitch for par.

From off the green. 

“I’ve never seen a putt do that, though,” analyst Frank Nobilo said on the Golf Channel’s broadcast of Saturday’s third round of the Genesis Invitational.  

“I’ve never. Oh my goodness,” analyst Nick Faldo said.  

“He would have had to hit it through the fringe,” Nobilo said. “There was almost no putt.”

About a minute later, the horn blew and play was suspended due to high winds.  

Only the final grouping of leader Sam Burns, Tyler McCumber and Jason Kokrak had yet to start their round. Wind gusts, according to the PGA Tour, were expected to be up to 30 mph during the afternoon, and it’s the first suspension due to wind since the 2015 Open Championship.

Bradley and his ball had the wind at their back for his only hole. 

The 2011 winner of the PGA Championship started his putt just right of the hole, and about 10 feet from the cup, it was on line. It didn’t stop rolling for about another 55 feet. His ball trickled on a grass patch between two of the bunkers on the left side of the green and ended up to the left of the base of one of the traps, 44 feet away. He pitched back on and one-putted from 4 feet for a bogey.  

The flag and the flagstick whipped the entire putt. 

“He’s going to head down to the concession stand,” Faldo said on the broadcast of the putt. “Back at the 11th tee.” 

“Oh man. Well, that’s why they blew the horn,” announcer Terry Gannon said on the broadcast.

Two rounds are finished at the 2021 Genesis Invitational, and now the real fun begins with star players battling for position on Saturday at Riviera. Here’s what you need to know to watch the third round.

Previewing Genesis Invitational Round 3

Dustin Johnson is looking every bit like the top-ranked golfer in the world right now. He won the Masters in November, then the Saudi International two weeks ago, and now he has his sights set on the Genesis title. Through two rounds, he’s right on track. Johnson followed up an opening-round 68 with a 67 on Friday, putting him in a tie for second at seven under.

Putters

Despite starting Saturday T2, Johnson is well back of leader Sam Burns. Burns had an incredible round of seven-under 64 to take the lead on Thursday, and a Friday 66 kept him there. He’s now reached 12 under through two rounds, building himself a solid five-stroke lead.

But as we see on the PGA Tour nearly every week, a 36-hole lead does not guarantee a win. In addition to Johnson, Burns will have to fend off several other star players. Jordan Spieth has continued his recent hot streak and begins the weekend at six under, six shots back of Burns. Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau and Patrick Cantlay are also in the mix.

The 2021 Genesis Invitational is already at the halfway point, and 67 players shot even par or better to earn the right to tee it up at magnificent Riviera for the remaining two rounds this weekend. You can find full third round tee times at the bottom of this post.

Notable groupings for Genesis Invitational Round 3

Twenty-four-year-old Sam Burns kept his foot on the gas on Friday, firing a 5-under 66 to reach 12-under overall — an impressive five shots clear of his nearest competitors. Burns has never won on the PGA Tour, though he did claim a Korn Ferry Tour title in 2018.

Putters

A win this week would easily be the highlight of his young career, but there is a bevy of world-class players who will look to capitalize on Moving Day: 2017 Genesis Invitational champion and World No. 1 Dustin Johnson is T2, five shots back. Jordan Spieth trails by six at 6-under, and Patrick Cantlay, Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau are all eight shots back at 4-under overall.

Burns will play alongside Tyler McCumber and Jason Kokrak in the final grouping on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. ET. Johnson will tee it up in the penultimate group with Joaquin Niemann and Max Homa at 12:54 p.m. ET.
