The 25-year-old had a down year by his standards: He only finished 3rd in SG: Approach The Green on the PGA Tour last season.

Because of the unique rerouting to Quail Hollow at this year’s Presidents Cup, Morikawa and partner Cameron Young were able to take advantage of his strength by having Morikawa tee off on even-numbered holes in their 2-and-1 foursomes win over Tom Kim and K.H. Lee on Thursday.

The routing of Quail Hollow for this week has every par-3 as an even-numbered hole and two out of the three par-5s. The one par-5 that isn’t an even hole? The 7th which was very reachable in the opening round, playing to just 527 yards, downwind. Morikawa put the second shot on that hole to 17 feet for eagle from 171 yards.

In all, Morikawa hit the approach to the green on 15 of 17 holes in the match. That’s all eight of the odd numbered par-4s, the four par-3s and all three par-5s —the 7th being an attempt under GIR. He hit six of them within 10 feet.

This also played into Young’s strength as one of the premier driver’s on the PGA Tour. He was second on the Tour in SG: Off-The-Tee.

“This course really sets up to where, like, if you play the odds or you play the evens, you hit the majority of a certain shot,” Morikawa said after the match. “Cam hit a lot of drivers. I hit a lot of irons. That’s kind of what you describe our golf games like. We were able to feed off that.”

It’s not a strategy that can only benefit strong iron players and strong drivers, it can also benefit stronger putters.

Jordan Spieth teed off on the odd holes and set himself up to hit nine of his and Justin Thomas’ birdie putts.

Spieth struggled on the greens last season, but has finished in the top-10 of SG: Putting three times in his career, and was known for outstanding putting in the run that led him to three majors in as many seasons from 2015 to 2017.

Thomas is certainly not weak with a flatstick, however, and Spieth said the decision of who would play odds and evens wasn’t an easy one.

“We had a really hard time deciding who was going to go odds and evens,” he said. “We didn’t decide until late last night. If we got the chance again, we might even switch it.”

Andy Lack’s Presidents Cup Plays

Top Overall Points Scorer: Justin Thomas (10/1)

Odds available on FanDuel

There are three questions that we must keep in mind when betting top points scoring props for the Presidents Cup. How many matches will they play? Who will they partner with? And does their game fit Quail Hollow? Although official pairings will not be unveiled until Wednesday afternoon, Thomas is the safest bet to play every session. A veteran of team competition, Thomas holds a 6-2-2 record in the Presidents Cup, and carries a combined 6-0-2 record in four balls and foursomes.

Between Presidents and Ryder Cups, the world No. 7 has built a solid rapport with Jordan Spieth as a partner. This duo will be one to watch once again in Charlotte. As for course fit, Thomas won the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail, and ranks top-five among this week’s competitors in the following categories: driving distance, birdies or better gained, strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained around the green, strokes gained total on courses longer than 7,400 yards, and overall strokes gained per round at Quail Thomas should be the favorite in this market, and I’ll gladly back him at 10/1 to be the top overall points scorer.

Top International Points Scorer: Sungjae Im (6/1)

Odds available on DraftKings

While I have less of a sense of the direction that International Captain Trevor Immelman will go with his pairings, Im and Hideki Matsuyama both feel like locks to compete in every session. No wonder they are co-favorites to be the top points scorer for the Internationals.

I am generally not one to bet favorites, but the back end of the International team is so weak that I expect Immelman to do a lot of mixing and matching. Im is a top-three talent on the squad, and I expect him to be utilized heavily. A potential pairing with countryman and friend, Tom Kim, is one to keep an eye out for.

Quail Hollow is one of the longest courses that players will see all season, and over the last year, the world No. 19 has been the best long-iron player in the entire Presidents Cup. Sungjae Im to be one of the lone bright spots this week for the Internationals.

Top Rookie Points Scorer: Sam Burns (5/1)

Odds available on DraftKings

I’ve been eagerly awaiting Sam Burns’ team competition debut, as I believe he possesses the ideal skill set for both this format and for Quail Hollow. The world No. 12 ranks top five out of all competitors in Strokes Gained: Putting on Bermuda greens, birdies or better gained, and SG: Off the Tee. With three of his four PGA Tour victories coming on Bermuda, Burns should be more than comfortable in Charlotte.

A wager on Burns is also a prediction that the LSU product will have the opportunity to play with his vacation buddy and close friend, Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world. A Burns/Scheffler pairing should be dominant, and even if Burns plays with Billy Horschel as well, I like their prospects. Zurich Classic teammates are competitive every single year at the New Orleans team event, held on a comparable Bermuda-grass course.

I believe United States captain Davis Love will use Burns heavily this week, making him the best value in the Top Rookie Points Scorer market.

1. It’s officially Presidents Cup week, as the Americans take on the Internationals at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. The U.S. has dominated the series. Any reason to think that won’t be the case again this year?

Alan Bastable, executive editor (@alan_bastable): Well, even Adam Scott has called his team the “heaviest underdogs ever,” with Vegas giving the Yanks a roughly 90 percent chance of prevailing. So, yeah, it looks bad on paper. Real bad. But…match play! Sports! Anything can happen, right? If the Internationals can avoid being overwhelmed by the scope of the task at hand — winning 17.5 points — and instead take each match as it comes, who knows what could happen. We’ve seen otherwise overmatched Davids with hot putters take down Goliaths before, and we’ll see it again. It’s been a weird year in golf. Perhaps the weirdness will continue. That said, yeah, it’s also quite possible the matches will be decided before we get to singles.

Dylan Dethier, senior writer (@dylan_dethier): Sure, why not?! If we don’t think the Internationals have any chance, there’s not much point, so I’ve talked myself into +750 being an extremely intriguing number for the away team. And the course actually fits a bunch of the International squad pretty well. Quail Hollow favors big hitters and specifically guys who are good with mid- to long-irons in their, while there’s less emphasis on chipping and putting. Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Cam Davis, Mito Pereira, etc. — these guys can all hit it where they’re looking. And this is sports! Let’s see how their best stuff stacks up.

Luke Kerr-Dineen, Game Improvement Editor (@LukeKerrDineen): Almost exactly no reason. The weaker team on paper lost more of their players than the stronger team. Sure, the U.S. won’t have Dustin Johnson, who may be the hottest player in golf right now. But the depth of their team means they won’t be losing sleep over it. Crazier things have happened, but the Internationals will need a Rocky IV-style upset to pull this one off.

2. Much of the conversation around the event will likely be about which players aren’t there, guys like Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith, among others. As the first team event without LIV players included, how do you anticipate that changes the mood or excitement level around it?

Bastable: The LIV factor will undoubtedly dominate the conversation early in the week, just as it has at virtually every other tournament this year. How can it not, what with the event being defined almost as much by the players who aren’t there as the ones who are. Take the International team’s absentees alone: Cameron Smith, Charl Schwartzel, Abraham Ancer, Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman, and on and on. Brutal losses all. You can’t blame Capt. Immelman for feeling like he got dealt a pair of 2s vs. his opponent’s full house. By Thursday, though, the attention will inevitably shift to the competition, and it’ll be fun, as ever, to see how some of the more unheralded players respond to the pressure.

Dethier: The event’s profile gets some sort of short-term boost from the chaos and controversy around who should be included and who shouldn’t. But there’s no question it’s a less interesting team dynamic without Brooks and Bryson vying for captain’s picks and Cam Smith dropping daggers on the greens. Immelman made it explicitly clear in our conversation that pros leaving for LIV knew they’d be barred from the event. Still, it’s a clear effect of pro golf’s fractured existence.

LKD: I think the Presidents Cup should be honest about its need for a re-think after this. The lesser of the two team events already, if this continues, it simply isn’t a sustainable path forward for an event that already struggles to punch through for wider relevance. If the majority of the conversation about a tournament is about who isn’t playing, you know there’s a problem.

3. Name one U.S. and one International player who look primed for a breakout week.

Bastable: Excited to see match-play savant Kevin Kisner in action. Dude has been aching to play on a U.S. squad for years. I think he’ll embrace and rise to the moment. On the International side, fully expecting Tom Kim’s star to continue to ascend. Insanely good ball-striker, and also strikes me as a fun/jovial team-room guy.

Dethier: Pendrith has quietly returned from injury to put together a run of some of the steadiest golf of anyone. He smashes the ball and is primed for a big-time week. On the U.S. side, Patrick Cantlay is playing as well as anybody — and it seems likely he and Xander Schauffele will each play every session.

LKD: Breakout? Max Homa seems primed to thrive in red, white and blue. And he’s playing well. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him run the table. As for the International team? How about Joohyung Kim. It’s a big stage for the young player with bundles of talent, and I think it’ll bring the best out of him.

Bastable: Even for the most accomplished college stars, there’s obviously no guaranteed route to the PGA Tour, so for up-and-comers looking to make a fast buck, LIV undoubtedly is an attractive option. I’m not sure how the PGA Tour can compete with that. Puig seemed off-put by the lack of opportunities (i.e., sponsor invites) he’s been awarded to play PGA Tour events. Those invites, the Spaniard noted, more often than not land in the laps of better connected U.S. players. There’s not an easy answer here for the Tour. It can’t lower the bar for entry, even for seemingly can’t-miss college studs. The Tour’s meritocratic qualifying system makes the Tour what it is. Gotta earn it.

Dethier: To Alan’s point, there have been plenty of can’t-miss prospects who end up missing. But LIV can’t take all of ‘em under its current format. There are only 48 spots, after all. The question then becomes how LIV’s feeder structure works — and exactly how far down the depth chart they can send big-time guaranteed cash.

LKD: Not really. I’ve said this before, but I don’t think either tour’s future is at stake, at least for the next few years. What golf fans should brace for is the kind of messy reality we had in golf between the 1980s and 1990s, when half the world’s best were playing the European Tour and the other half in America. It was only the rise of Tiger Woods that consolidated professional golf stateside. With the GOAT receding from view as a player, that kind of two-pretty-strong-tours is what we’ll be returning to.

5. After much speculation and years of wondering, new photos show the addition of a new teeing ground on Augusta National’s famous par-5 13th. What are your thoughts on a lengthened 13th and how does that change the tournament?

Bastable: The change will have traditionalists wincing but c’est la vie. This is where we are with the professional game. I think in a perfect world the lengthening would make the hole 10-15 percent harder. Any more than that and 13 will lose its eagle-ability that makes it so much fun to watch. I do like that the new pushed-back tee appears to create a knee-knocking chute, a la the tee shot at 18. Good luck threading that corridor of pines with a one-shot lead on Sunday.

Dethier: I think it’s going to be awesome. Pros hitting big-time drives and then trying to flight high, soft fades off of hook lies onto that green? Yes please. I’ve watched enough Masters from the 70s, 80s and 90s to crave watching the pros take on that challenge. But that’s in a vacuum. If you zoom out, it’s problematic that golf’s most famous arena just keeps stretching, and stretching, and stretching; the distance debate can feel like golf’s version of climate change. A new-and-improved 13th hole is like a warm, sunny winter in New England. Sure, it represents an existential threat to humanity’s existence. But hey, how ‘bout that March golf?

LKD: I love it, and can’t wait to see it. From the sky, the hole is giving me Harbour Town golf. Target golf at its very finest. Pull a driver and hit a tight draw round the corner. Hit the shot or go home.

Bastable: My top three should also be everyone else’s top three: slow play, slow play and slow play. Absolute scourge on the game. A distant fourth: scraping up five-footers as if they’re kick-ins. Most maddeningly these self-appointed gimmes frequently come after said offender had just missed a putt from the same distance — as if they’d never miss two in a row from that range.

Dethier: You can learn a lot about someone from the way they treat their caddie. If a playing partner is rude to their looper, blames him or her for their own shortcomings, stiffs ‘em or generally treats ‘em like second-class citizens, I’ve seen what I need to see.

LKD: People stepping in my line on the green. You’re not just making the putt harder for me, you’re also just being really annoying. It’s like cutting somebody off on the road, or skipping in front of somebody in line. Or like those annoying people in airplanes who try to sneak down the aisle before it’s their row’s turn to stand up and leave. Either way, it’s rude, so don’t do it.

The weight of international relations customarily falls on the shoulders of the pros at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But the clubhouse at Quail Hollow, the host course of this year’s Presidents Cup — which, every two years, pits a team of America’s top players against the world’s best from countries outside of Europe — is a pretty grand manse in and of itself.

Undoubtedly, the venerable Charlotte, N.C., club will open its arms to the 2022 International squad when the event gets underway on Thursday. But don’t expect its course — or, for that matter, Team U.S.A. — to be a pushover. The gorgeous, wooded 1961 George Cobb design (with flourishes from Arnold Palmer in 1985 and ongoing upkeep by Tom Fazio) will be a brawny and demanding test for Cuppers both foreign and domestic.

Similar to what Inverness did for the Solheim Cup in 2021, Quail Hollow has altered its routing for the competition. In this case, to make sure its famous, water-strewn final five holes feature prominently in the outcome. At the 2019 Cup, more than half the matches never reached the home hole, so Quail Hollow’s 14 through 18 — where H2O looms left, the place where pros tend to miss when the pressure is on — will be moved forward in the mix to become holes 11 through 15. The best of them is the testy 11th, a 330-yarder that’s one of the country’s finest drivable par-4s. Its fairway bows out to the right before coming back to the edge of the lake and feeding into a long, narrow green. The hole has a knack for goading players into rash tactics. Expect it to produce scores from eagle to triple over the Cup’s four days.

The next is a twisting par-5 that doglegs left around the lake to an uphill green. It too can yield a few eagles, which helps put players in the proper mood to tackle one of the country’s most daunting three-hole stretches. Holes 13 and 15 are both unyielding two-shotters. Find the lake on 13 or the creek on 15 off the tee and the momentum will quickly revert to the other team. Meanwhile, should some matches make it as deep as 17 and 18 (holes 11 and 9 in Quail Hollow’s standard routing), players will again have to cover nearly 1,000 yards in eight shots. Yikes! Indeed, the course’s collection of two-shot holes are absolute brutes.

Getting the ball in play off the tee will be paramount, as Quail Hollow in September, with bermuda rough, is an even sterner proposition than in May, when the annual Wells Fargo Championship features friendlier rye grass. Think 2017 PGA Championship, when, in mid-August, Justin Thomas won at eight under. Staying below the hole on steeply pitched greens like the 9th and 15th will be imperative but also tough to accomplish coming out of thick bermuda rough — especially given how firm the pure bermuda greens will run toward the end of September.

How difficult will the host team want the course set up? That remains to be seen, and some of it will be based on the final composition of the Stars and Stripers. The only thing certain is that there’ll be no shortage of drama. Maybe détente is too much to ask for.

Bryson DeChambeau is a ways from contention heading into the final round of play at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, but in fact, it’s a miracle he’s made it this far.

DeChambeau found himself jet-setting around the United States on Friday and Saturday to make his 8:10 a.m. tee time on Saturday at Quail Hollow — and not by his own volition. The reigning U.S. Open Champ made the cut at the Wells Fargo only after boarding a return flight to Dallas convinced he’d missed it. As a result, he wound up on a last-second, overnight flight back to Charlotte landing just in time to make it to the first tee.

DeChambeau (-2), enters Sunday seven strokes back of the leader, Keith Mitchell (-9), who is looking for his second PGA Tour win. Also in contention is Rory McIlroy (-7), who’s looking for his first victory on North American soil since the Tour Championship in 2019.

Below are the tee times for Sunday’s final round; you can catch the action on Golf Channel from 1-3 p.m. ET and on CBS from 3 p.m. till the completion of play.

The group chasing after Mitchell is headlined by Rory McIlroy, who enters Sunday at the Wells Fargo looking to end a lengthy winning drought. The four-time major champion has not won professionally since the WGC-HSBC Champions in late 2019, and hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since the Tour Championship in August of that same year. McIlroy enters Sunday at 7-under and tied for second place with 2019 U.S. Open champ Gary Woodland. Further down the leaderboard, Abraham Ancer, Patrick Reed and Viktor Hovland will need big final round performances to vault themselves into contention.

Below is all the information you need to watch the Wells Fargo on Sunday, including tee times, TV and streaming schedules, and more!

Rory McIlory and Joel Dahmen lead

Rory McIlroy headed into this week as as the heavy favorite, with 6/1 odds. The Northern Irishman has not only won the Wells Fargo twice (2010 and 2015) but he’s also firing on all cylinders thus far this season, with a prestigious win at the Players Championship and six other top-10 finishes.

So it’s really no surprise to see him taking charge at the top of the leaderboard from the very beginning at Quail Hollow. An opening round of 66 (five under) included six birdies and a bogey, giving McIlroy a one-shot lead over a five-player lock in second at four under par.

Joel Dahmen managed to keep his scorecard sparkling clean on Thursday, with five birdies and no bogeys to match McIlroy’s 66. Though he has five career top-1o finishes on Tour, Dahmen is still seeking his first PGA Tour win.
