Peyton Manning wears many hats, even in the golf world. Course owner. Augusta National member. Tiger Woods’ playing partner. And, as of this week, golf course small project manager, too.

A big golf week calls for a big golf guest! And this Masters Week, Manning joins the Drop Zone to preview the Masters, break down Augusta, tell Tiger Woods stories, give golf advice, introduce his new bourbon, Sweetens Cove Kennessee and announce the “Give-A-Little” program. Then Sean Zak, Dylan Dethier and Luke Kerr-Dineen break down the Masters — specifically Tiger Woods’ appearance — from on the ground in Augusta, Ga. This is a good one. Enjoy!

Peyton Manning remembers his first trip to Sweetens Cove. It began with a call from a tennis pro.

“Andy Roddick and I go back just from being professional athletes at the same time,” he remembered on this week’s Drop Zone. “So Andy called me and invited me out to South Pittsburg, Tenn., right near Chattanooga, and said, ‘Come play this golf course called Sweetens Cove with me.’

“I’d heard of Sweetens Cove, I spent time around Chattanooga, but I hadn’t played the course. And then I played it with him — and I just got it. It connected with me. It’s a nine-hole course, a public golf course, very inexpensive to play. There was an old shed for a clubhouse and there was just something really cool and magical about it.”

Roddick had an ulterior motive for inviting Manning out.

“Andy said, ‘Why don’t you come in with us and buy this golf course and be a part of something special?'”

It was an easy sell. The course had been a cult favorite for years; golfers made the pilgrimage to nine-hole paradise from all over the country. The tee sheet was filled. All the course required was some investment — and a new business plan — to ensure the experience lived up to the reputation. Manning was in.

“When we bought Sweetens Cove we wanted to keep it cool and unique, we didn’t want to change a lot about it. We added a bathroom, we thought that was pretty groundbreaking to add indoor plumbing. But we kept it special,” he said.

The new ownership group particularly appreciated one course tradition in particular. People would bring their own bottles of bourbon or whiskey and take a shot before they hit the opening tee shot. Some groups would leave their bottle for the next group. The tradition sparked an idea:

“Maybe we ought to start our own bourbon,” Manning remembers.

The initial run of Sweetens Cove Bourbon was a high-end, award-winning product made under the direction of Master Blender Marianne Eaves. It retailed for around $200. On April 1st, the group announced the release of a new product called Kennessee. The new bourbon retails for $60, making it more accessibly priced and opening up a world of cocktail possibilities.

Manning has been on the ground — and on the phone lines — trying to get the Sweetens brand off the ground. Manning went so far as to cold-call a bunch of liquor stores in an attempt to get them to stock the product.

“There are a lot of products out there, we’re a small startup, kind of like the golf course, just sort of building and spreading the word,” he said.

As it turned out, the attempt backfired. Manning’s calls to Indianapolis-area stores went unreturned. Manning said he waited the requisite three days to get a response before reaching out to some mutual friends.

His friend laughed.

“He’s like, ‘He thinks it’s a prank,'” Manning remembers his friend saying. “‘There’s no way Peyton Manning would be calling me, it’s a total prank.'”

Meanwhile, Manning was amazed to see how the little expenses added up around the golf course. Little improvements led to big-time costs. The experience left an impression. As a result the “Little Golf Course that Could” is hoping that proceeds from its new bourbon can help out a few other courses on the margins, too.

In an effort called the “Give-A-Little” program, Sweetens will dedicate $5 from each of the first 10,000 bottles sold. That money will go towards little projects at courses that need it.

“We’re going to try to help out golf courses with those little things. New turf mats with the driving range. A new bench. Paving the parking lot. Little projects that we dealt with a lot,” Manning said. “They need a little help and we’re excited that as part of the Kennessee launch some of the proceeds are going to go to helping out these golf courses in little ways.”

Phil Mickelson, golfer, was talking football as if he were Phil Mickelson, quarterback. The six-time major champion had joined brothers Peyton and Eli Manning, themselves former QBs, in mid-November on their “Manningcast” broadcast and was dissecting the Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Los Angeles Rams with almost as much care as he would show in trying to hit a wedge.

Mickelson asked about 49ers rookie running back Elijah Mitchell: “So looking at the Niners, I know they’ve struggled a little bit. And No. 25 there, Elijah Mitchell, he came in as a sixth-round draft pick and beat out Trey Sermon from Ohio State as a third-round pick, and you see this happen where a lot of guys come in who are lower draft picks or what have you and they outplay people ahead of them. What about Elijah Mitchell, what about players who are drafted later in the rounds gets them to propel into the starting lineup? Is it heart? Is it work ethic? Intellect? What do you guys see?”

He asked whether the Rams should consider running the football: “I got a football question here, all right. The Rams, their strength, they’re the third passing offense. They’re an awesome passing team. But you lose Robert Woods, you don’t have the chemistry with a new receiver. So do they play to their strength, or do they, down 14, go against the opposing team’s weakness, which is the run. San Francisco is almost last in stopping the run. Would you consider running the football, trying to get a little more physical and try to control the game and keep it close, playing to their weakness, or playing to your strength. What would you say?”

On and on it went. And after an announcement on Wednesday, the back and forth could continue — in the sport Mickelson is best known by.

ESPN said it will expand its agreement with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions Company, which last year started the “Manningcast,” where the Manning brothers would watch Monday Night Football and be joined by various guests. As part of the deal, “alternative presentations” will be shown for UFC, college football and, yes, golf.

A press release did not reveal which events would be broadcast — ESPN is the home for Masters and PGA Championship coverage, and its ESPN Plus platform broadcasts PGA Tour Live — nor did the release say who would be the hosts. When asked specifically about golf, Andy Hall, ESPN Communications Director, told GOLF.com: “We don’t have any more details at this time but will be exploring in the future.”

Of course, that won’t stop us from having a little fun. If the Manningcast style is used, the thought is that it follows the Manning formula — a well-known athlete, with personality and connections. Here, then, is who could be in the booth.

The Mannings

Why not? They understand the format and guest part, and they both can knock it around on the golf course — Peyton has been part of two Matches (teaming with Tiger Woods in the second version, and Steph Curry in the third) and Eli proved his golf chops during Mickelson’s Manningcast appearance. Sort of. There, Eli hit into a simulator, and Lefty offered the following critique:

“Well, I mean overall, one word to describe it is cute. I think it’s a cute little swing.”

Phil Mickelson

If Golf Twitter is any indication, Mickelson would be the host with the most. His brief appearance in the CBS booth during the 2020 PGA Championship was perhaps more memorable than any shot he took that year. You would imagine he wouldn’t have trouble lining up guests, either. (Though if he’s playing golf in another league … But maybe that frees him up for TV work!)

Charles Barkley

Is Charles Barkley a pro golfer? No. Is Charles Barkley a golfer? It’s getting better. But is Sir Charles one of the most entertaining analysts, regardless of sport? Yes. Some would argue that his commentary during the Matches has played the biggest part in making them what they are — entertaining. And you would think there would be no shortage of personalities who would love to jab Barkley’s golf game.

David Feherty

If there’s a format that fits David Feherty, it’s this. Watch the golf? Cool. Dish on a story about golf, but not necessarily about the golf at hand? Cool. He’s been Manningcast before Manningcast. And Feherty hosted a wildly popular talk show on Golf Channel. Playing with others wouldn’t be hard.

Johnny Miller

A long shot, right? Maybe. Though in an interview with Golfweek’s Adam Schupak last year, the longtime NBC analyst was asked if he would consider coming back for the majors or the Ryder Cup, and Miller said, “I could do that.”

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods may not be as verbose as Mickelson or Barkley. But no player moves the needle in golf like the 15-time major champion. He was last in a booth in December during his Hero World Challenge, too, and as golf’s biggest name, guests wouldn’t be a problem. If you’re a Woods fan, and his return from injury is delayed, this is where you want him to be.

Any player

During the Zozo Championship, Golf Channel picked a different player each round to join its broadcast, and Rickie Fowler, Pat Perez, Charley Hoffman and Ryan Palmer dished on their rounds, the course and the play in front of them. (After the event, GOLF’s James Colgan offered a list of other pros he’d like to see in the booth in that setup, and you can find that story here.) It would require some coordination to make sure that a spur-of-the-moment pro would be enlightening, but who better to give insight to that tournament than a player in the event?

But you might have missed the latest chapter in which an investment group, headlined by tennis star Andy Roddick, came in to turn passion into financial stability. Oh, and Mr. Manning too. Yes, that’s really him on the horn, hoping you’ll consider stocking Sweetens Cove Bourbon in your store. Esquire recently named it the best “Celebrity Alcohol.”

“Peyton just randomly getting a list of numbers and cold-calling them — that’s been one of my favorite sights,” says Roddick, laughing. Since Sweetens’ inception in 2014, golfers have left shots of bourbon for the groups behind them, paying it forward. Now the course’s bespoke blend is available in 10 states. It’s part of a larger vision. Creative thinking has added to the golf experience, too, which now includes double-pinned greens, a 20,000-square-foot putting course and periodic “Friday Night Lights” after dark outings. It’s clear these investors aren’t looking for a quick payday. They’re keeping the rootsy vision of the place alive — and hungry for little wins along the way.

“Peyton throws a TD and wants to know what to run the next series,” Roddick says. “We’re all competitive as hell and want to make this thing awesome.”

The Match 3: Champions for Change is off and running, and the banter has been flying from both sides. As expected, Charles Barkley has heard plenty of chatter from his opponents, but thus far the Hall of Famer has gotten the last laugh.

Although Peyton Manning and Steph Curry are quite capable golfers, they’ve been no match for the team of Barkley and Phil Mickelson. Their hot play early on was so good that they built an early lead — so much so that Mickelson got extremely cocky with a concession on the 5th hole.

Manning and Curry made a bit of a mess of the hole and faced a chip for bogey with Barkley looking at a 20-footer for birdie. The smart play would be to make them hit the shot and put even more pressure on the opponent. Mickelson had no such plan.

“What is that for — is that for 5?” Mickelson asked. “You want to just give that to them?”

Barkley then picked the ball up to put the opposition out of their misery. With the possibility of a 3-putt still in play, it was a bold — and cocky! — move. And it sent a message to Manning and Curry that Mickelson didn’t think they had a chance.

.@PhilMickelson just gave @StephenCurry30 and Peyton the chip.

Barkley zipped his putt from the fringe some five feet past, but Mickelson curled in the comebacker. It was a reminder: There’s nothing worse than being pitied by your opponent.

Charles Barkley is playing with Phil Mickelson. One of the best of all time. Five majors. Forty-four PGA Tour victories. His own brand of coffee. He’s playing on a course Lefty owns, Stone Canyon Club in Arizona. He’s playing against just a former NFL quarterback and a current NBA guard.

Charles Barkley is also playing golf.

Friday, when the third Match tees off, you can bet on Mickelson and his bombs. Or you can bet on Peyton Manning and his win in the second Match, where he teamed with Tiger Woods to beat Mickelson and Tom Brady. Or you can bet on Steph Curry and his barely-above-scratch handicap.

But, really, it comes down to this:

Can you really bet on Charles Barkley playing golf?

You’ve seen the swing. You’ve heard the chuckles. And Vegas knows what you’ve seen and heard. At FanDuel, the team of Mickelson and Barkley is listed at +138, while the Manning and Curry team is listed at -175. Your $100 bet on Mickelson-Barkley wins you $238, while your $100 bet on Manning-Curry wins you $158.

For his part, Barkley said his swing has improved. And the format for the event is modified alternate-shot match play, where each player will hit a tee shot, the best one is chosen, and the shot alternating will then begin. Or, more simply put, it won’t all be up to Barkley.

Let’s help your Barkley bet.

Three members of our staff — myself, Jessica Marksbury and Josh Sens — are making bets using odds from DraftKings. The three of us were the leaders of our staff’s weekly picks game, which ended for the year with the Masters.

Here’s who we are betting on for The Match: Champions for Change, with TV coverage starting at 3 p.m. ET on TNT:

Jessica Marksbury

To-win: Steph Curry-Peyton Manning, -175. An alternate-shot format just seems like too high a mountain to climb for Phil Mickelson when he’s saddled with a player like Charles Barkley (sorry, Chuck!). Curry is a stick who has proven he can play well in the limelight, and Manning should be able to hold his own. Even if Barkley has a pretty good day, he’s bound to put Phil in some compromising positions — and Phil isn’t exactly bulletproof off the tee, either. So, that’s all a long-winded way of saying my money’s on Curry/Manning.

Josh Sens

To-win: Phil Mickelson-Charles Barkley, +138. Per usual, Jessica offers a sound assessment of things. But the key for me is the odds. Mickelson and Barkley are underdogs, and Curry and Manning are laying a good amount of juice. Given the randomness of alternate-shot, and the fact that this is a tight, target-y course, I think we can count on Manning being in almost as much trouble as Barkley, and as great a player as Curry is, he’s not Mickelson, among the greatest escape artists of all time. The other factor is this: Barkley has reportedly made huge improvements. We’ll see if he can put them into play when the lights go on, but if he plays even halfway to his potential (he was a single-digit golfer before the demons got him), he won’t be far behind Peyton. I’ll take Sir Charles and Phil, getting the odds.

Nick Piastowski

To-win: Phil Mickelson-Charles Barkley, +138. I’m betting on the best golfer, on a course he knows. But, yeah, as I wrote above, I can’t believe I’m betting on Charles Barkley playing golf. Come on, Chuckster!

While Black Friday might mean a shopping spree for some, for us golf degenerates, it’s an opportunity to kick back and watch the latest iteration of The Match. This event, deemed The Match: Champions for Change, comes on the heels of a surprisingly successful match back in March.

The cast of characters is a little different this time, and so is the setting, but the entertainment value should be all the same. So, if your Friday plans include lounging on the couch as opposed to opening your wallet, read on and learn four things you need to know about The Match 3.

1. New faces in the crowd

As mentioned earlier, the participants in this match will differ from past editions. The original Match featured Woods and Mickelson, while teams were implemented in The Match 2. Teams will again be used this time around, but only one participant will be a professional golfer.

Mickelson will be paired with NBA Hall of Famer and famously inept golfer Charles Barkley, while their opposition will feature retired quarterback Peyton Manning and NBA superstar Steph Curry. Manning showed off his skills in the The Match 2, while Curry is a notoriously formidable golfer. It should make for an interesting, and competitive, match.

2. Money for charity

Like The Match 2, The Match 3 will also be for a good cause. This time, the charitable contributions will go toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), benefitting diversity and inclusion around the country.

Ahead of The Match 3, Mickelson took it a step further and announced a massive, $500,000 donation to Jackson State University, an HBCU in Jackson, Miss.

“I am not knowledgeable, I am not qualified to talk about race, okay?” Mickelson said on the 21st & Prime podcast Tuesday. “As a white male, I’ll never be able to understand the challenges that Black America goes through, but I want to be part of the solution.”

Those donation numbers will only go up as play goes on Friday afternoon.

In the last two weeks, we've seen Augusta National, Cameron Champ and Phil Mickelson pledge funding to HBCU's across the country.

Even more expected Friday via The Match III, with Steph Curry, who has sponsored the golf teams at Howard University.
— Sean Zak (@Sean_Zak) November 24, 2020

3. New format

The previous Match was a handicapped, fourball match. This time around, the format they will implement is modified alternate shot.

In this format, each player will hit their own tee ball and then hit their partners ball for the second shot. From there, the teams can choose which ball to play out the hole with using standard alternate shot rules. This wrinkle will add a fun twist while making sure that each player gets involved on every hole.

4. Charles tees

Barkley is leagues behind the other three competitors in this event, so he’ll get his own set of tees to play from. These shorter tees, deemed by Mickelson as the “Charles tees,” should give Barkley an advantage that offsets his putrid ability off the tee.

“They’re (going to be) slightly ahead of everybody else,” Mickelson detailed on a recent appearance on the Callaway Golf Podcast. “That’s going to open it up to some possibilities where he might not have to hit driver every hole.”

Expect some banter throughout the day as Barkley plays it forward from the rest of his group on Friday.

Charles Barkley isn’t just a basketball player or a television talking head. He is an enigma — an entity larger than himself. The more time Charles spends butting heads in the public eye with everyone from Shaquille O’Neal to Tom Brady, the better for all of us.

Chuck is as beloved a curmudgeon as has walked the face of this earth. His specialty is forthrightness, which he serves in rib-rattling quips and blunt ascertainments. In short, Barkley has never seen an adversary unworthy of receiving a good-natured ribbing.

In that sense, Barkley’s golf career has served as jet fuel for his hilarity. In the years since his brilliant NBA career, Chuck has come to be known for another athletic achievement: he is perhaps the world’s most famous bad golfer. Barkley has struggled with the yips and the shanks, worked his way through a murderer’s row of famed golf instructors and altered his swing into a variety of forms.

But while passion for golf has proven insignificant in the face of improving his wonky swing and scores, it’s provided an accelerant to a new, Barkley-branded jocularity. Ahead of Barkley’s debut in the Match 3 alongside Phil Mickelson, Peyton Manning and Steph Curry, here are Chuck’s best golf lines.

11 hilarious Charles Barkley golf lines

“This is some crappy golf. Y’all know that.” Indeed, we do.

“I don’t like playing charity tournaments…it’s very nerve-wracking because once you hit the first person, you get really nervous.”

“I don’t like talking about golf. Golf is not my favorite. The only thing good about golf is drinking and smoking.”

“I think you’re an amazing coach,” Barkley once told Nick Saban. “If you could fix my golf game, I’d put a statue of you at my house. I’ve tried everything to fix my golf game and nothing seems to work. But if you, as great a coach as you are, could fix my golf game, any time you come to Arizona, there’ll be a statue of you outside of my house.”

“I don’t think of myself as giving interviews, I just have conversations. That’s what gets me in trouble.”

“It’s embarrassing. If you’re a man and you can’t beat the girls or the smart kids, you shouldn’t be playing…I’m retiring from golf, I’m not going to play again.”

“I came to the realization a couple of months ago that I’m fat. If you get tired from walking — and that’s all that golf is — then you are officially fat.”

“Well, in fairness, he is a golf pro. If I saw a guy dunk a basketball, I wouldn’t get all excited about it.”

“There’s a better chance of me playing John Daly than Matt Damon,” Chuck said, when told that Daly would choose Damon to play the former U.S. Open champ in a movie about his life.

“She says, ‘Hey Phil,’ like she had called him or something, and I’m like, What’s his last name?” Barkley said of his first time meeting Phil. “She’s like, ‘He plays golf.’ So what’s his last name? She says it’s Mickelson. I said, Wait, your boyfriend is Phil Mickelson? Oh hell no Amy, I got to play with that dude.”

“Listen, as long as I can drink and smoke when I play golf, I’m good. I’m going to have some drinks and some stogies. I’m not going to be overly concerned about how good or bad I play. I mean, I don’t think Tom Brady lost a lot of sleep because he was struggling on the front nine.”
