SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — When Ingrid Lindblad saw her grouping for the first two rounds of the U.S. Women’s Open, she was starstruck. She was paired with two major champions: So Yeon Ryu and fellow Swede Annika Sorenstam.

“When I saw that I’m playing with [Annika] I was like, in shock,” Lindblad said. “I was like, ‘This cannot be true.'”

The thrills didn’t stop there.

When Lindblad reported to the 9th tee for her 8:50 a.m. tee time, Sorenstam passed her scorecard to the young amateur.

“I’m like, ‘I have Annika’s scorecard in my hands,'” Lindblad said.

But if there was any power dynamic at play when the 8:50 grouping teed off, it was put to rest on the course. Lindblad navigated Pine Needles masterfully during her opening round, making seven birdies en route to six-under 65, a score that, as of mid-afternoon Thursday, gave her a two-stroke lead at the Women’s Open.

              Getty Images

Her scorecard — blemish-free except for a bogey at the 10th — doesn’t tell the entire story, though. It wasn’t just that Lindblad, a rising senior at LSU, took the early lead at the biggest event in women’s golf. It was how she did so that impressed.

While Sorenstam and Ryu plodded around the Donald Ross design with finesse as their guiding light, Lindblad stuck to her game: power. She averaged nearly 270 yards per drive off the tee in her opening round, near the top of the field, and those extra yards put wedges and short irons in her hands far more than her competitors.

Her mentality is an asset, too. Lindblad is not afraid to go low (her career low at LSU is a scorching 64), and she brought that courage with her to this major.

“She’s a fearless player,” said Sorenstam, who shot a 74 in Round 1. “I think she’s confident in her own game. I know she doesn’t shy away from the limelight that maybe I did as a young girl.”

The grand stage is not foreign to Lindblad, either. She’s a two-time All American at LSU and has won SEC Player of the Year twice as well. That’s not to mention her pair of top-three finishes at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

An amateur winning this championship is not without precedent, but it has been 55 years since Catherine Lacoste accomplished the feat. In recent years, amateurs have flashed and faded, and 72 holes of stellar has been too much to ask.

But that doesn’t mean Lindblad is doubting her chances.

“It’s possible,” she said.

It’s tough to point to a golfer with a more decorated resume than Annika Sorenstam.

Her 72 LPGA Tour wins place her third all time, and her 10 major titles rank fourth. She’s a World Golf Hall of Famer and an ESPY winner. She was one of the first female members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and she’s won a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

There aren’t many figures who loom larger in the world of golf.

This summer, for the first time in 14 years, Sorenstam will return to major championship golf. Thanks to her victory at last summer’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open, the 51-year-old will tee it up in the U.S. Women’s Open. Fittingly, the championship is to be contested at Pine Needles, the site of Sorenstam’s second USWO victory in 1996.

Her major championship chops might be a bit rusty, but her mind is not. Sorenstam has always known how to think her way around a golf course, and that attribute is still an asset.

“It’s about swinging within yourself,” Sorenstam told GOLF.com. “Knowing what your capable of — that’s always been my plan. Hit the shots that you know how.”

Sorenstam’s shot-making throughout her career was legendary. In the prime of her career, hitting more than 75 percent of her greens in regulation was the norm.

She wasn’t too shabby off the tee, either. She was longer than most of her peers, and straighter than them, too, ranking inside the top 20 in driving accuracy eight times during her career.

“I never got tired of hitting the fairways,” she said.

The combination was lethal, and it turned Sorenstam into one of the greatest ball-strikers of all time.

She achieved that success by leaning on an old cliche — staying within herself and knowing her game.

“When I was at the range, I would practice and experiment with different shots,” she said. “But when I was on the course, I just wanted to feel comfortable. I wanted to stand over the ball and be in control as much as possible.”

Sorenstam explained she keeps it simple on the course. She plays from A to B, and doesn’t try to toy with her swing while she’s in the midst of a round.

Changing the swing during the round is something she says recreational golfers should stay away from. Play with the swing you’ve got while on the course, and do your best to score with it. You can fix the faults after the round.

“If it wasn’t right, then I’d work on it afterwards,” she said. “It’s about going out there and playing the best that you can at that moment. Some days, I’m a lot more conservative if I feel like my game is not sharp. And then the days that I felt like it was my day, I’d be a little bit more aggressive.”

Play with the swing you’ve got on the course, and iron out the kinks during practice. It was the recipe for success for Sorenstam, and it should help you, too.

It’s been a joy to watch the now 51-year-old shoulder her way back in the competitive mix. She teeed it up in the celebrity division at last week’s Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions and made it to a playoff for the victory at her home course, Lake Nona Golf & Country Club, where she ultimately fell to former MLB star Derek Lowe.

In the aftermath of her runner-up finish, Sorenstam was asked if there was a specific, game-changing tip that stood out to her from her long career, and she gave a predictably insightful answer.

“There’s been several tips,” she said. “Not necessarily like a swing tip or like a putting tip or anything. It’s more my dad told me a long time ago there are no shortcuts to success. Keep on working. Face the fears is another one I keep on thinking in my mind.

“Go out there and step up to the ball or whatever you got to do. I especially do that with my kids, trying to be a good role model,” Sorenstam continued. “Hopefully they get something out of this week, that I didn’t give up and I kept trying, and that’s really what life is about. You might not have all the best tools in your bag, get all the best bounces, but keep on fighting and you never know what’s going to happen.”

Sorenstam has a son, Will, who’s nine, and a daughter, Ava, who’s 12, with her husband, Mike. And given her recent success on the course, it appears she’s certainly practicing what she preaches. Before she defends her Senior Open title at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio, in August, she says she plans to play the 2022 Cologuard Classic Celebrity Challenge in Tucson at end of February, and in a senior event in Portugal in March.

Congrats, you got much better at golf in 2021! But now it’s time to take your game one step further this offseason. That’s right, we’re talking about targeting that magical number most golfers set their sights on: a score in the 70s. Here, in our handy guide to breaking 80, we’ll speak to experts, pros and more to create the perfect plan for you to take your game to the next level.

Step 1: How you’re ruining your round before you tee off
Step 2: How to stop wasting your range warm-up
Step 3: How to play the right tees for you
Step 4: Time to fix your equipment
Step 5: How to hit more fairways
Step 6: 5 secrets to finally make more putts

***

In this edition of GOLF’s guide to breaking 80, we commit ourselves to getting you past the longest distance in golf: the six inches between your ears. And to do so, we’ve enlisted the help of three golf legends: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam. Below, find their advice on everything from blocking out the noise to pushing your limits. Up first, Tiger!

1. Tiger’s simplification of focus

It would be impossible to distill the entirety of Tiger Woods’ mental greatness into only a single tip. From his childhood, Woods was primed to become a pressure performer — surviving heckling from his father and an unfathomable sum of pressure from the outside world. His transformation into the greatest golfer in a generation was both preordained and virtually unrepeatable.

But that is not to say there’s nothing you can learn from Tiger Woods’ mental greatness. Sure, you might not have the added benefit of prodigious ability or a lifetime of training, but there is always room for improvement, especially when that improvement comes from the GOAT.

Back in June, Harold Varner III joined GOLF’s Subpar podcast to discuss, among other things, the mental lesson he picked up from his years around Woods.

“Yes, so I’ll never forget. I asked him, ‘Hey man, what do you do to focus?’” Varner said. “My dad always talked to me about I need to focus. And [Tiger’s] like, ‘Actually, I hear everything.’ I was like, ‘What?’ And I’m thinking, ‘Well, we only got like 20 more feet to walk before everyone is going to be around you.’ He goes, ‘Playing golf is like reading a book with the TV on.’”

Tiger’s point: the key isn’t to try to avoid the noise — it’s to grow comfortable in it. To hear everything, but pay it no mind. In some ways, that’s easier said than done, but Varner said he practiced Tiger’s tip by doing exactly what he said: reading with the TV on.

For your game, practice the same. Learn to be comfortable in a distracting environment without losing sight of your goal.

2. Annika Sorenstam’s no bad days approach

Every golfer is going to have bad days. They’re inevitable, and in one of the delightful ironies of the sport, they have a nasty habit of showing up in the precise moment we need them least (like, for example, a club tournament or round at a bucket list course). Bad shots, in that very same vein, are nothing more than a fact of life as a golfer.

But reacting to bad shots and bad days? Now, that’s where the truly great golfers set themselves apart, at least, in the mind of Annika Sorenstam.

Before her start at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open in June, Sorenstam reflected upon her lessons from a lifetime as one of the highest-profile players in the sport. Looking back on the last 20 years, Sorenstam said one of her biggest lessons is to learn how to forget the bad — or at least learn to live with it.

“That’s one of the things I’ve learned — or maybe just matured, I guess, maybe is the right word — is learn how to forget bad shots and move on,” she said. “It’s not the end of the day. I’d be upset for about 10 seconds and then I’d move on to the next tee and something else pops in my mind. Before it would linger a little bit. We would sit there and try and figure out what can I do, and nowadays I don’t really do that anymore because life is precious and it’s not about my score so much anymore. Go out there, do my best. I’m still a fighter, still a competitor, and we’ll see what happens.”

3. Phil’s mental endurance-boosting trick

It is perhaps the biggest mental hurdle faced by amateur golfers: they’re capable of focusing, they’re not capable of keeping focused. Sure, four or five holes of focus is good and 12 or 13 is better, but then what? Ultimately, isn’t the goal for every golfer to be locked in for 18 straight holes? And if it is, how does one get there?

The answer, it seems, is the same as if you were a distance runner working toward a marathon: train for it. At least, that’s the answer according to six-time major champion Phil Mickelson.

In the aftermath of his historic victory at the PGA Championship in May, Mickelson shared that he’d been playing insane amounts of golf in the lead-up to the tournament, all with the goal of “elongating” his focus. Here’s what he said:

“I’m just making more and more progress just by trying to elongate my focus. I might try to play 36, 45 holes in a day and try to focus on each shot so that when I go out and play 18, it doesn’t feel like it’s that much. I’m trying to use my mind like a muscle and just expand it. As I’ve gotten older, it’s been more difficult for me to maintain a sharp focus, a good visualization and see the shot.”

If you’re struggling with maintaining focus over the full round of golf, perhaps your best best is to play plenty more than 18 holes in a day. Learn how to feel comfortable in discomfort, and eventually, you’ll find your mental stamina is much more than it once was.

Hey – it worked for the oldest major champion in golf history, maybe it can work for you, too.

When Annika Sorenstam was dominating golf in the late 1990s and early 2000s she could do it all. Bombing drives off the tee, flagging irons from the fairway, and draining putts all around the green. But if there’s a lasting memory I — and indeed, most golf fans — have of Annika during that period, it’s the style of how she did it. Her tempo, specifically, which was smooth as a knife through hot butter.

Like another golf Hall of Famer, Vijay Singh, Annika has partnered with the deWiz golf, a training aid that golfers wear like a watch on their wrist. It creates a 3D model of your golf swing instantly on your iPhone, which allows you to track key details of your swing.

Annika says her golf swing has gotten slightly shorter as she’s gotten older, which she uses the deWiz to monitor, but what she studies the most in her golf swing is her tempo.

“I have a tendency to get a little shorter and quicker nowadays,” she says. “Finding the right length comes down to the speed of my swing.”

Here are two ways she keeps her tempo silky:

          1. Keep the hips in-sync

          2. Your mindset matters

1. Keep the hips in-sync

The key to good tempo is having a good transition — the moment at the top of your swing between backswing and downswing, Annika says. It’s crucial in this moment to make sure your hips don’t spin out too early and leave your arms and body behind you.

“When I start down too quickly with my lower body, I fly out with my hips and they get everything out of sorts.” she says. “Things need to have a little more time to work together.”

2. Your mindset matters

But good tempo isn’t all technical, Annika says. She says that to swing it smooth you need to be in a good frame of mind. If your life is hectic when you step onto the first tee, you need to recognize that your swing is probably going to feel rushed and hectic, too. Be aware of your frame of mind and surroundings, she says, and account for it.

“I’m a mother, an entrepreneur, a golfer, I’m always busy, and sometimes I see that showing up in my golf swing,” she says. ” I have to remind myself to take a breath, and to slow down.”

Good advice for the rest of us, too.

Finding sunglasses that are both fashionable and functional for golf is one of life’s great sartorial difficulties.

Sporty frames with loads of helpful technical attributes don’t always look very flattering, while high-fashion sunglasses with bigger frames tend to have a hard time fitting under hat or visor bills, not to mention staying put on the bridge of your nose.

So when you find a pair that ticks both boxes, it tends to be love at first sight. Enter the Revo Relay Petite: The rose-gold aviator frame is perfectly on trend (and newly scaled down for petite faces — yay!), while the lenses incorporate Revo’s signature NASA-based polarized lens technology, which was initially derived from technology NASA developed as solar protection for satellites. The result? Protection from 100 percent of UVA, UVB, and UVC light to help reduce glare, provide crystal-clear clarity on the course, and prevent vision problems.

Recent U.S. Senior Women’s Open champion Annika Sorenstam just signed on as a Revo ambassador, and plans to collaborate with the brand to design new styles that will make their debut in the spring.

“I’ve always been diligent about protecting my eyes from the sun, especially while on the golf course,” Sorenstam said in a press release. “With Revo’s superior lenses, I can be functional and fashionable even on my busiest days.”

Itching to snag a pair for yourself? Check out the Relay Petite in detail below.

It’s tempting to witness Annika Sorenstam’s victory at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open last weekend, some 30 years after Annika burst onto the scene with her 1991 NCAA Individual title victory, and conclude that some things never change. Time goes on, but Annika always wins, because if there’s one constant in sports, it’s that winners always win.

But success isn’t stationary, much as Annika’s career would make it seem that way. It’s a byproduct, and the result of variety of factors that are constantly changing over time. The essence of Annika’s golfing genius isn’t that she’s kept doing everything the same for years and years, but rather because she’s continually figured out how to navigate the new obstacles set in her path.

During the 2021 U.S. Senior Women’s Open, Annika spoke candidly all week about the challenge facing her this week: Learning how to win again.

“I’m a little bit of a different person now,” she said on ahead of her final round. “Things matter a little differently, so you have to handle where you are today and do the best you can.”

The old way of doing things, simply put, wasn’t going to cut it anymore. As Annika explained, she was a different person now, which meant approaching the same game in a new way:

1. Learning to think less

At the 2021 PGA Championship, Padraig Harrington spoke about golfers “losing innocence” as you get older. The scar tissue builds over time, he explained, suggesting that the primary challenge to playing good golf in your later years wasn’t as much a physical challenge as it was a mental one.

Though the tone wasn’t quite as fatalistic as Harrington’s, Annika alluded to something similar during the tournament last week:

“When you get a little older you start thinking a little too much,” she said. “When I was younger I went out there, boom, boom, that’s it. Now it’s like, Okay. Now I’m I’m trying not to think.”

But as Annika says, if the added sense of perspective that age brings makes the task of taking one shot at a time more difficult as you get older, it also makes some things easier…

2. Maturing your mindset

When golf is the central focus of your life, it’s easy to take it a little too seriously. Looking back at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, Annika says when she was younger and things didn’t go the way she wanted, it’d really bother her. Now, it’s easier to let things slide.

“I felt like I always had to be at the top,” she says. “That’s one of the ways I’ve matured; learning how to forget bad shots and move on. It’s not the end of the day. I’d be upset for about 10 seconds and then I’d move on to the next tee and something else pops in my mind. Before it would linger a little bit. We would sit there and try and figure out what can I do, and nowadays I don’t really do that anymore because life is precious and it’s not about my score so much anymore,”

She continues:

“I’m very happy with my family, and that’s what means the most. I have a distance now from golf. Every shot doesn’t mean as much as it used to, even though I care, but I know by the end of the day I’ve got them, I’ve got the support and I’m living my life. I’m not going to let shots bother me as much,” she says. “It’s a lot more fun to go out there and not feel that you have to do something or otherwise something is wrong.”

Annika’s new sense of distance and perspective propelled her to victory at Brooklawn Country Club, and by learning from the greatest female player of all time, we can take a small slice of her winning mentality, and put it to use in your own game.

Xander’s golden putting stroke

Xander Schauffele raised some eyebrows two months ago when he went away from a traditional putting technique in favor of the controversial arm-lock putting method. Even though he’s statistically been one of the better putters on the PGA Tour over the last several seasons, he decided to experiment with the arm-lock technique in search of even the slightest advantage.

“It’s just, it’s better, it’s easier, it’s more consistent,” Schauffele said at the time. “The fact that it’s anchored to your arm, there isn’t a whole lot of — you can flinch in your hands, but you can’t flinch your entire left arm, so that’s the process behind that.”

But last week, during his gold-medal effort at the Olympics, Schauffele was back to his old ways. Gone was the arm-lock technique, replaced by his old, traditional method.

“I switched because the arm lock was a little too slow, I guess, I couldn’t hit putts hard enough,” he said. “I kind of got some good feels back with my putter at the Open Championship and so my caddie and I decided to run with it this week.”

Xander Schauffele ditched arm-lock putting and went back to a more traditional method at the Olympics.

"I switched because the arm lock was a little too slow, I
guess, I couldn't hit putts hard enough."

Golden decision🥇 pic.twitter.com/EaljmCNGeB
— Zephyr Melton (@zephyrmelton) August 2, 2021

As Schauffele explained, he made the switch back two weeks ago at the Open Championship, but the Olympics were the first time with his traditional method while back in contention.

He had no trouble shaking off the rust, nor trusting his stroke under pressure. Schauffele clinched the gold medal by draining a testy four-footer on the final green.

“I just tried to really become more present and just focus on the 4-footer,” Schauffele said. “Once again I just reminded myself, this is just a four-footer, all you have to do is make it, no big deal.”

Family advice for Annika

Winning a major championship is always special, but with her family on hand at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, Annika Sorenstam’s victory last weekend was all the better.

Sorenstam lapped the field at Brooklawn Country Club, claiming the title by an impressive eight-stroke margin. Her family was on hand to witness the entire thing.

“It’s very different to share it with your loved ones,” Sorenstam said. “To kind of have them walk here, walk the fairways, see what I do for a living and see what it takes to get there, and to be able to share it with them, like I said out there, this is a totally family affair in a lot of ways.”

As it turns out, having her family on hand didn’t only give her a morale boost. Her children were happy to give her some competitive advice as well.

One of the most famous coaches currently in ALL of golf, @ANNIKA59's son Will!

Let's hear the advice he gave to his mom ahead of her final round in the #USSeniorWomensOpen. pic.twitter.com/kMkDDfxTJa
— USGA (@USGA) August 1, 2021

After a third-round 72, Sorenstam headed to the range in search of a spark for her final round. While there, her 11-year-old daughter Ava gave her some practical advice.

“Ava kept telling me, ‘When you hit a shot tomorrow, mommy, don’t have anything in your mind,” she said. Sorenstam’s 10-year-old son Will was there with some advice as well. “Will told me to believe and that I can do it.”

She took that advice to heart on Sunday as she carded a four-under 68. It was one of just two sub-70 scores on the final day of competition.

“Sometimes you don’t know if kids listen to what you say, but a lot of these words I feel like they’ve come out of my mouth to them,” Sorenstam said. “Now I’m get being it back, so I’m happy about that. I’ve got to live to my own lessons.”

Bad practice session? Keep your chin up

At the Olympics on Sunday, Rory Sabbatini started his day with what he described as one of the range sessions of his career. “Couldn’t find the golf ball and the clubface to match them up at all,” he said. Later that day, in the fourh round, all he did was make 10 birdies and an eagle on his way to a 61 and the silver medal. Takeaway: golf is weird. Bad practice doesn’t always lead to a bad round. Remember that next time you start your day with a series of tops, slices or shanks. There’s always hope!

Sorenstam, whose game needs no introduction, is the biggest name of the three, widely regarded as one of the best female golfers of all-time with 10 career majors and a recent induction in the World Golf Hall of Fame. She continues to be deeply involved with the game, serving as the president of the International Golf Federation.

While the other two new members might not have dominated the pro game like Sorenstam, each has starred in her own corner of the game.

Nine weeks later, here we are. The club also said it would remove any gender-specific language from its governing bylaws.
