In a story seemingly the inverse of “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,” Jessica Korda has had four different pants suppliers so far this week.

“Monday I wore Megan Khang’s pants,” Korda said after her first round at the AIG Women’s Open. “Tuesday, I wore my sister’s pants and Wednesday I wore Alison Lee’s pants. And today I’m wearing FootJoy pants.”

How could the 5-foot-11 Korda fit into the 5-foot-1 Khang’s pants?

“She rolls her pants up,” Korda said. “Megan is like 5-foot nothing, so she rolls her pants up a lot. So they fit me perfectly.”

Korda’s suitcase has still not arrived in Scotland, echoing a story we’ve heard a few too many times this summer, including from this writer. After getting a little help from her friends (and sister) for the first few days of the week, her sponsor FootJoy came in with clutch shipment just before the first round.

Tournaments

Maybe the distraction during the beginning of the week allowed Korda to relax as she fired a 5-under 66, featuring four birdies and an eagle, to share second place, one stroke behind leader Hinako Shibuno after round one.

She said she accepted the bag wasn’t going to show up before the first round.

“I gave up on it by Wednesday,” Korda said. “If it comes here, great, but if not, it is what it is. At this point I’m playing a golf tournament. FootJoy sent me a bunch of clothes. Yeah, we just try to figure it out from there.”

She said she does have an AirTag tracking device on her suitcase, so she knew it was still at Zurich Airport. But she can’t get anyone to get it for her.

“So if anyone knows anyone at the Zurich airport that would like to put my suitcase on the one flight a day that they have coming into Edinburgh, I’d deeply appreciate it,” Korda said.

Hopefully the forecast of mid-to-upper 60s for the rest of the week holds, because most of Korda’s warmer clothes and gears were in her suitcase.

“My hand warmers,” she said. “My hands get really cold so I wear gloves all the time. That, and I’ve got a lot of heat patches for my lower back. And my vitamins, don’t have that.”

The thing about golf, as you’ve no doubt heard us say before, is that there’s no one way to do it well. One method that works for someone many not for another.

I was reminded of this recently during a chat with Jess Korda, who paired with her cover star sister Nelly to share some tips about their golf swings.

Along the way, I asked her about warming up. How does she get going for the day? Her answer was quite interesting.

“When I’m on the range, I don’t really have a target I’m aiming for, I’m only focusing on the contact,” she says.

Most coaches and players will say aiming at a clear, defined target is an important part of range practice. Jess will do that when she’s practicing, but when she’s warming up before her round, she only has a vague idea of her target for most of her warmup.

Instead she’s focusing on her feel: Making solid contact, feeling if she missed the shot left or right, and how it matches up her ball flight. It’s only at the very end of her warmup session, when she pulls driver, that she gets more target-focused and heads to the course.

“The most important thing for me is to get a feel for how I’m hitting the ball,” she says. ”If I can start with soft shots, making good contact with nice rhythm, the ball will go where I want it to go.”

Hello, friends!

I am feeling very excited about the past couple of days on social media. Forgive me in advance for getting a little TMZ-y this week, but I followed the Gretzky-Johnson Bachelor(ette) festivities very closely and am here to share that with you all. But first, we have a few housekeeping items to go over.

The man may have lost a five-shot lead on Sunday at the Honda Classic, but the kid is alright. He shared this view from his boat on Monday morning to prove that not only is he alive and well, he is experiencing good vibes. Thanks for the update, Boog.

Happy (belated) Tony Finau Day!

It was Tony Finau Day in Utah last week, and he and his wife, Alayna, celebrated with this video.

These two are quickly becoming my favorite social media follows in the golf space. Not many golfers are willing to dance on camera like that, and Tony not only enjoys it, but makes it look cool.

It’s Seminole Pro-Member week down in Juno Beach, and there are a ton of stars teeing it up in the event. Photos from the exclusive event are usually scarce, so thank you to Nelly Korda for posting this photo on her Instagram story last night. If I could be a fly on the wall for any golf event, I think it would be this one.

As a New England sports fan, I’m jealous of the Korda sisters. As a huge golf fan, I’m extremely jealous of Tom Brady. And shout out to Jimmy Dunne in the background just admiring all the talent.

Kelley and Jon Rahm’s big announcement

Jon Rahm announced that he and Kelley are expecting baby No. 2 this summer! Golf broadcasters love to discuss how much perspective a baby brings golfers, so I’m looking forward to seeing what they say about the impact two babies can have.

Kat Zhu says yes to the dress

Collin Morikawa’s fiancee, Katherine Zhu, had a successful trip to the bridal shop last week. Also, this has got to be some sort of record for the number of PGA Tour weddings that will occur this year, right? Keith Mitchell just got married, and we’ve got the Zhu-Morikawa, Sims-Koepka and Gretzky-Johnson weddings on deck. It’s difficult to keep track of them all!

The Bachelor(ette) party of the century

In last week’s Rogers Report, I mentioned that Paulina’s bachelorette in St. Barth’s had just begun. In my experience, most bachelorette parties are 2-3 days, but this one was a week long. Incredible. I’m equally in awe and exhausted from following this crew’s every move on social for the last seven days. Let’s break the trip down.

Before I get into the details, allow me to introduce you all to the wedding party. I don’t recognize everyone in the photos, but here’s who I do know, from left to right:

Ok. Now that we’ve got that covered, let’s get into it. Let’s start with the voyage over to St. Barth’s!

Nothing gets the party started like a private jet (As a loyal Delta member, I have no idea if that’s true)! Either way, this was the perfect way to kick off my vicarious vacation last week.

How about these gifts! The seat on the left reminds me of what I’d wake up to as a child on Christmas morning, except the gifts here are cooler than a new puzzle and box of Crayola markers. And everything was ready for them as soon as they arrived.

I’ll let you take a look at that bar menu, but I think my favorite item is the “No ReGretzkys.” Clever! Also, Paulina literally had a throne on the trip, which is iconic. Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s get to the partying.

I quickly realized this was not only Paulina’s bachelorette, but it was DJ’s bachelor party as well! He had a similar, yet not as extensive, balloon set up.

DJ’s lineup included his brother and caddie AJ, Paulina’s brothers and a few pals.

It wouldn’t be a proper bachelor party for the two-time major champion if there weren’t some flips off a boat involved. Don’t try this at home, folks.

At this point, it had been a few days since the wedding party was gifted anything. But worry not! Paulina took care of that.

Yes, that is a car filled with Prada bags. Paulina seems to have gifted a few designer items to everyone at the event.

Can you imagine? I’m not a big purse gal, but these are pretty cool. I was sad to see the week end, but it was so much fun following along. Also, no one really wants my take on this considering I’m usually in bed by 10 p.m., but I think AJ and Jeremy were the MVPs of this trip. Every Instagram story showed them dancing and full of energy. I’d like to be friends with them in my next life.

It’d be natural for you to wonder who watched DJ and Paulina’s kids that week. Surprise! They were there, too.

Just kidding. They had probably the coolest babysitters in the world, Wayne and Janet Gretzky, which worked well because they had Grandparents Day at school. Shout out to Janet for sporting Adidas’ limited-edition Wayne Gretzky-inspired golf shoes in the school hallways.

After all of this marvelous content we received, I am really looking forward to the wedding week posts. If the past week was any indication, we’re in for a thrill.

By nearly every measurement, Nelly Korda has had a banner 2021. Three LPGA titles, including a major. Gold medal at the Tokyo Games. World No. 1.

But there’s one accolade she’s guaranteed not to collect this year: the LPGA’s Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average — even though with just two events remaining in the season, Korda’s 69.074 average is tops on tour.  

Also assured not to win the award is Jin Young Ko, who is currently second in the LPGA scoring average standings, at 69.186.

Same goes for Inbee Park, who is third, at 69.534.

Instruction

All three players are ineligible for the award because they will not have played enough rounds in 2021 to qualify. To be Vare eligible, players must notch either 70 rounds or 70 percent of official tournament rounds, whichever number is smaller. That disqualifies Korda (58 rounds to date), Ko (59) and Park (62), meaning the frontrunner to win the Vare is now Lydia Ko, who sits fourth in the standings with a 69.615 average over 69 rounds.

Ko, too, was in danger of coming up short on the minimum-rounds requirement. According to Golfweek, she was planning to sit out this week’s Pelican Women’s Championship, in Belleair, Fla., until she learned that she needed the start to qualify for the Vare.

Among the other players who were unaware of the Vare parameters: the Korda sisters, Nelly and Jessica.

Nelly said she learned about the rule recently in a group chat.

“I was like, ‘Oh, okay. Cool. That sucks,’” she said Tuesday in a joint press conference with her sister at the Pelican.

“Yeah,” added Jessica, who is sixth in the Vare standings with a 69.927 average but also ineligible with only 59 rounds played. “I was like, Great rule.”

Here’s how the rest of that press-conference exchange went:

Nelly: “I mean, I would say Jin Young has had an amazing past couple events. If she was to win it, she deserves to win it. I would say the same for me. It kind of sucks that that’s just how it is. Yeah, that’s all I have to say.”

Jessica: “It’s just that the person who’s now in the running, is it considered an asterisk or — I don’t know. It’s just such a weird rule when you’re No. 1 and 2 player in the world.”

Nelly: “And 3, right?

Jessica: “And 3 player — is it 1, 2, and 3 aren’t eligible? So it’s just weird.”

Earlier in the press conference, Nelly was asked if she had considered playing more events in 2021.

“No,” she said. “My schedule was crazy enough. I had to pull out last minute from Portland because I just wasn’t feeling well, and same with Walmart. So, no, I don’t think I could have played more events because my body was just so tired. I typically play all the events at the start of the year, and if I play well then I’ll take some time off, because the traveling in the summer was just so crazy.”

A reporter asked the Kordas if the rule should be changed or reconsidered.

“One-hundred percent,” Jessica said. “Especially with the way the schedule is. That’s for other people to decide. We’re just here to play.”

To which Nelly said, “Yep.”

As a point of comparison, there are two season-long scoring-average awards available to PGA Tour players: the Vardon Trophy, which is awarded by the PGA of America, and the Byron Nelson Award, which the Tour hands out. To be eligible for the Vardon, players must complete a minimum of 60 rounds, while Nelson eligibility requires a minimum of only 50 rounds, or 20 fewer than the Vare.

This isn’t the first time an LPGA player who finished atop the scoring-average rankings didn’t win the Vare. At the end of last year’s Covid-shortened season, Danielle Kang claimed the award even though three players had lower scoring averages. In 2004, Annika Sorenstam, who that year tied her own record for all-time low LPGA scoring average (68.697), also fell prey to the minimum-rounds rule, though just barely, with 66 rounds played.  

Vare winners don’t just get bragging rights. They also earn one point toward the required 27 points for LPGA Hall of Fame qualification.

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — Pro-ams are some of the coolest experiences a recreational golfer can have. Getting to tee it up on a pro-level tournament course with the best in the world? You won’t find that in your weekly skins game.

At this week’s Aramco Team Series, some lucky amateurs get to take the experience to the next level. Not only do they play alongside the top women in the world all weekend, but their score actually counts toward the team scores as well.

Playing in front of the best in the world is already nerve-wracking, but doing so with stakes on the line? That’s a whole different type of pressure.

Luckily for the amateurs in this week’s field, the ladies on their teams have experience playing with recreational golfers in weekly pro-ams, so they’re experts on how to help keep them at ease.

At Glen Oaks Club this week, I asked some players what advice they have for their amateur playing partners. Here’s what they said.

Jessica Korda

“I would honestly say ‘We’re on the same team, so don’t suck.’ [laughs] It’ll be a fun day regardless. I know they’ll be nervous, but we’re nervous too. We’re playing for something bigger than us, especially in these team events. I know they’ll be getting some shots, so we’ll be relying on them, so ‘don’t suck,’ would be my best advice.”

Nelly Korda

“Just try to have fun. Try to enjoy the moment, it’s something very different and we’re all going to be nervous, because we’re not just playing for ourselves, we’re playing for our team too so it’ll be fun if we all keep it pretty light out there.”

Angel Yin

“When you play with amateurs in tournaments like this, they want to contribute and do well for the team, because they want us to do well. With that mindset, they want to do well so badly that sometimes it backfires and they get too tense and stressed out. I just want them to be relaxed. Sometimes they play it too safe because they think that if you play it safer there will be less mistakes. But at the end of the day, you can pull a 4-iron just as far as you can pull a driver. So just hit driver and get closer to the green so you have a chip. Just hit driver and be as aggressive as you want.”

Sophia Popov

“I try to talk with them about a lot of things that don’t pertain to golf. It’s important to get the feeling that you’re out there to have fun. That’s what this week is all about. Let’s just go out and have a good time. If we play well, we play well. If not, then it’s not a big deal. I just want to them to be in a good mood. That’ll help them play better. Don’t focus on the game too much, but instead just have some fun.”

Anne van Dam

“It’s important to be comfortable and talk with them. I try to compliment them when they hit a good shot and tell them it doesn’t matter if they hit a bad shot. Ask about their personal life and help them relax a little bit.”

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. — The USGA’s announcement to implement a local rule limiting driver shafts to 46 inches earlier this week was met by polarizing reactions in the men’s game. Some, like Phil Mickelson, lamented the change, while others, like Rory McIlroy, met the announcement with ambivalence.

In the world of women’s golf, the change has been met with a gentler response — one that can largely be characterized as indifferent. The Korda sisters, Nelly and Jessica, might have summed up the reaction best during their press conference ahead of the Aramco Team Series.

“No drama,” Jessica said of the change.

Gear

“It doesn’t affect us,” Nelly added.

That’s a common sentiment among the top women’s golfers in the world. While the men’s game has been embroiled in a distance arms race, that thirst for distance hasn’t consumed the women’s game in the same way. With many of the best women players still finding success with finesse, tricked-up driver setups have not been embraced nearly as much.

According to the USGA, only 3 percent of professional players use clubs longer than 46 inches, and that number is surely smaller in the women’s game.

“I would only see something like that as a problem if 90 percent of the field played with something like that,” said Anne van Dam, who ranks 1st on the LPGA Tour in driving distance. “I don’t really see it as a big point. You can do way more with other things — limiting driver heads or balls, stuff like that. I don’t think this rule will change much, especially in the women’s game.”

Drivers

Illustrating the minute impact the change will have on the women’s game, many of the pros approached for comments on the matter at Glen Oaks Club Thursday afternoon had very little knowledge of the impending change, which will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2022. Gabi Ruffels told GOLF.com she wasn’t even aware of the rule change, while Angel Yin said she only knew because she’d seen Mickelson’s critical tweets.

Even among those that are in the know on the specifics of the new rule, the news did not cause much agita.

“I don’t care, because I don’t have a driver that’s longer than 46 inches,” said 2020 Women’s Open champion Sophia Popov. “I know I heard some criticism on the men’s side, but for us, the shorter the driver is, the harder you can hit it. I don’t think it’s that big a deal. … It’s something I just watch from afar and watch on Twitter and laugh about.”

Week two of Tokyo 2020 is here, and with it comes the Women’s Olympic Golf Competition. This will be just the second time since 1900 that the women have competed on the links at the Olympics, and the competition is sure to be fierce.

Here are five questions we have ahead of play.

1. Will Nelly Korda remain dominant?

No player on the planet — male or female — has been as dominant in 2021 as Nelly Korda. She has three wins already this season, including a dominant run at the KPMG Women’s PGA, and has missed just one cut in 13 starts. Her scoring average sits at a healthy 68.89, easily tops on the LPGA Tour.

Now she heads to her first Olympic Games, where she’s joined by her sister Jessica, also competing in her first Games. Jessica hasn’t been quite as successful as her younger sister this season, but she does have a win to her credit.

“It’s honestly surreal,” Nelly Korda said. “It’s so much fun. I don’t know what I would do without Jess.”

The Korda duo is sure to be a focal point in the leadup to the competition, but world No. 1 Nelly Korda will have the higher expectations of the two. She’s currently the betting favorite to bring home a gold medal, and doing so would add another chapter to her storybook 2021.

She’ll be joined in competition by Americans Danielle Kang and Lexi Thompson, each looking to become the first American woman to medal in golf since 1900. Will she be up to the task?

2. Is this it for Shanshan Feng?

Shanshan Feng has aided in a golf boom in her home country of China and won a bronze medal to her home country in 2016. However, if her comments from earlier this summer are any indication, the Tokyo Games may be her swan song.

According to Golf Channel’s Amy Rogers, Feng said after the KPMG Women’s PGA that she is considering hanging it up after Olympic competition.

“It’s enough of golf, right?” Feng told Golf Channel. “If you take last year out, this is already my 13th year. It’s a long time.”

Feng has always been one to do things her own way, so an early retirement would not be out of character.

“I am here for the Olympics,” she said. “My plan is up to the Olympics. I don’t know what I’m going to do after it. I might come back, I might not.”

If Feng does opt for retirement, she’ll go out with an impressive resume to her credit. She became the first Chinese woman to earn an LPGA Tour card in 2008 and has accumulated 10 wins — including a major — in the time since. In 2017, she became the No. 1 golfer in the world, a spot she remained for 23 weeks.

Enjoy watching Feng while it lasts, golf fans. It might soon be coming to an end.

3. How will the returning medal-winners fare?

Unlike in the men’s competition, all three medal-winners from 2016 are returning to compete in Tokyo. And their games are in fine form.

Gold-medal winner Inbee Park is ranked No. 3 in the world and won earlier this season at the Kia Classic. Silver medalist Lydia Ko seems to have broken her long slump in 2021 and heads to Kasumigaseki Country Club with seven top 10s and a win already this season, while Shanshan Feng has two top 5s in majors.

“I’m very excited to be here and obviously representing the country twice in a row is the biggest honor for me,” Park said. “Here in Tokyo in five years after Rio, it is truly a dream come true for me.”

4. Can Gaby Lopez take the next step?

Gaby Lopez has enjoyed a successful start to her professional golf career, earning two wins in five seasons on the LPGA Tour. Now, she returns to the Olympic Games to represent Mexico for the second time. And in Tokyo, she got the special honor of serving as Mexico’s flag bearer during the Opening Ceremony.

“It’s the biggest honor every single time you get to represent your country, to play for the sport you love and play for the people, something way bigger than yourself,” Lopez said. “But being actually carrying the flag for the Olympics at the opening ceremony was just a dream come true.”

Lopez has been spotted hanging around Kasumigaseki Country Club all week in preparation for competition, and she’ll look to become Mexico’s first medal winner in golf. With wins on the LPGA Tour already, the next logical progression would be to win (or medal) in a major competition such as this.

Keep an eye on the 27-year-old from Mexico. It could be a special week in the making.

5. How will Kasumigaseki Country Club hold up?

Kasumigaseki Country Club received rave reviews for the men’s competition, and now it preps to host the women’s event. But while it is the same golf course, with different setups and pin positions, the course is sure to play different.

Jessica Korda shared her thoughts in her pre-tournament presser on what fans can expect to be different for the women.

“They obviously hit it a lot farther than we do and put more spin on the ball. So, I think coming out of the rough they might be able to stop some things faster than us. And they’re coming in with probably shorter clubs than we are. I think it will in that sense as of right now we have only played nine holes and seen that, but for me it was really fun to just see how aggressive of players they are. Drivers were hit where not necessarily we would be hitting drivers. But again, for them they were saying that it was just so soft that they could be super aggressive … They made it really exciting.”

The course might look similar to what fans saw on TV last week, but fear not, this week it should play entirely different.

“These guys are good.” The memorable marketing message by the PGA Tour for its players a few years back still rings true. But not just for the boys. The gals these days are every bit as talented.

Case in point: 10-year LPGA Tour vet Jessica Korda, who carded a 60 (including a back-nine 28) in the third round of the Diamond Resorts Tournament of Champions this past January. I don’t care where you’re playing, those are some pretty gaudy numbers. They helped Jessica nail down her first victory in three years and signaled that the fan favorite is past some nagging swing issues and ready to reestablish herself as one of the LPGA’s top players.

I worked with Jessica when she was a junior, so I’ve seen how her swing has evolved over the years. Now, it’s as synced up as it can get. By that I mean how her body and arms seamlessly work together on both sides of her swing. A lot of recreational players would do well to copy the way she pairs her downswing body turn with her arm movement. If you can get to a place like frame 4 below, with your hips just slightly in front of your shoulders and your arms out in front of your body, you’re going to hit a lot more fairways and a lot more greens.

Jessica’s an athlete (most know of the Korda sisters’ championship pedigree), but there’s nothing in the sequence above you can’t copy to hit better shots. And if by chance you can mimic her heart and personality, well, then, now you’re talking.

1. Address

As it is with all great players, Korda’s setup is both balanced and athletic. Even better, it’s devoid of tension — a moment of calm before the oncoming flurry of activity. There’s a slight “S” shape to her spine that most rec players should avoid if possible.

2. Backswing

Notice how much more Jessica’s arms and club have moved than her body. This is great sequencing. The club is slightly inside the target line — something she’s working on correcting. Her arms are hyper-mobile (like Ernie Els’), so it’s tough for her to get the club up with her elbows in the right position compared to other players.

3. Top

Just oozes power and athleticism, doesn’t it? When Jessica loses form, she drops the club (especially the driver) too far behind her on the way back and at the top. She’s a “long-levered player” who needs her arms and club “up” or she risks getting stuck on the way down. This is much better than in recent seasons.

4. Coming down

Her improved top position is fueling better downswing positions too. She’s made a pretty steep arm drop, but notice how her hands are in front of her body, not behind. Everything is pacing nicely, with her hips only slightly ahead of her shoulders.

5. Impact

Jessica has worked hard on getting her hips more open at impact. You can see the results here: an awesome impact position! Her right arm and clubface look perfectly synced and stable. Zero manipulation — just the way you want it.

6. Release

Jessica extends her front side from foot to hip to boost her speed through the ball. When you time this extension right, like Jessica has learned to do, you not only look smooth and elegant, you mash your shots for miles.
