In part four of our Tour fitting series, I tapped Cody Hale of Odyssey to take us through his putter-fitting strategy and what matters most to the best players in the world when it comes to what, in my opinion, is the piece of equipment to which players forge the strongest emotional attachment (the ball is a close second).

Putters are a hard club to fit, because sometimes the numbers don’t matter. Expert fitters will tell you players most desire from a putter (1) consistent aim, (2) efficient contact, and (3) whether they can trust what they feel and see.

The best putter fitters I see on Tour (like Cody) are typically the best listeners; they’re almost like therapists. Trying to achieve good statistical results and convince players that there is only one answer isn’t the answer. Cody is excellent at doing these two things: (1) Getting players back to a baseline that works, and (2) ensuring players are comfortable at all costs.

The stroke work is for the coaches; Cody’s job is matching the putter to enhance that work. It’s not as easy as it sounds, because you have a few masters to serve. Your player’s eyes, the conditions of the putting surfaces and the player’s feel and ultimately overall performance.

The best players in the world all have sensitive feels, and it’s Cody’s duty to ensure that a player’s feel and putter work in harmony. In simple terms, the putter should adjust to the player, and not the other way around.

So when looking for a putter, it’s important that you prioritize a few keys. For me, it’s:

1. Can I aim it?
2. Do I hit it out of the middle?
3. Does the ball roll over my line most of the time?
4. Am I comfortable with the putter?

Odyssey Tour putter fitting strategy

Putter fittings at any level are highly individualized and unlock a wide range of possibilities. On Tour, our goal is to optimize a player’s putter setup to complement their stoke dynamics and hopefully help produce a more repeatable and transferable result in tournament conditions. 

At Tour events, our fitting process begins by establishing a baseline measurement using Quintic Ball Roll. Inside our Tour Truck, we are fortunate to have a putting green equipped with Quintic that allow us to analyze key parameters for how the putter and golf ball are performing. We can identify areas for improvement whether it’s refining aim and start line accuracy, launch conditions or selecting a different putter model and balance profile better suited for that player’s stoke mechanics. Face angle at impact is one of the most reviewed parameters as it’s a critical determinant for start line. We look at several factors when improving start line and it could be as simple as a slight aim adjustment (not all good putters aim it perfectly) or testing different hosel configurations and center of mass locations that may influence a players feel and stroke patterns.

Take, for instance, Chris Kirk, who tends to have a slight left aim that produces a push bias but still manages to square the face at impact quite well. During our testing with Chris, we have identified that he aims best with rounded mallet designs that have minimal to no alignment aid or that feature perpendicular alignment (i.e., Versa). These features tend to help reduce his left aim bias into a more manageable range.

Recently, Chris recently has worked with his coach on some setup adjustments, and alongside that we transitioned him into a Jailbird S2S with no sightline. The putter change improved his aim accuracy and reduced the delta between his aim and start line to less than 0.5 degrees. Not all Tour players aim a putter perfectly, so it’s important to determine the optimal ranges for each player and match a putter design that supports those tendencies.

Each player has a unique set of variables in his or her setup and stroke, and that’s the beauty and challenge of blending a shape, hosel configuration and balance profile to best suit a player’s stroke mechanics. A Tour player’s “feel” is paramount, and their feedback plays a major role in shaping our recommendations. When we can tighten the gap between what the player perceives and the results, their focus can shift from mechanics to refining consistent feels, rhythm and speed control. 

A notable example includes a current top five player in SG: Putting who made a putter change toward the end of last season. We measured his stroke several times last season and, despite good aim within 0.5° from 8-10 feet, his stroke path was extremely out-to-in, requiring signification compensation to match up the face. The putter design he was using featured a deeper center of mass with a slant neck design that decently suited those tendencies at the time. 

About midway through the season, alongside his coach, we decided to test another option that could create a more neutral environment for the path and face to work together. The recommendation was to stand in a mallet shape for alignment purposes but move the center of mass more forward with a shaft axis more through the center, which created less toe hang. The switch to a #7 Double Bend (Face Balanced) immediately yielded a path consistently under 2° left and more naturally increased his face awareness. Following several weeks of testing, the putter went into play, and he has emerged as statistically one of the best putters over the past 7 months, including a PGA Tour win last fall.  

Every player is unique, but our goal remains the same: fine tune their equipment in a way that builds trust, consistency and performance when it matters most.

Odyssey first introduced the Tri-Hot line in the early 2000s, featuring putters made of a multi-material construction to achieve a more forgiving putterhead and to promote a better end-over-end roll.

The line has since returned with the latest Tri-Hot 5K putters (One, Two, Three, Double Wide and Triple Wide; from $400; odysseygolf.com) also employing a multi-material construction but with modern-day tech for more forgiveness and to make it easier to square the face at impact.

By the way, the 5K in the name refers to the 5000 MOI rating, a measure of forgiveness once reserved for mallet designs. Need more inspiration? Talor Gooch put one in his bag and immediately won the RSM Classic at Sea Island.

1. 303 STAINLESS STEEL

The neck and front section of the putter are made of 303 stainless steel that’s less dense than the tungsten inserts. The tungsten inserts housed in the stainless steel create less twisting on off-center hits (see No. 4).

2. 6061 ALUMINUM

The back section is made of lightweight 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum, which displaces weight away from the center and back of the putter, placing added mass on the heel and toe. Hello, stability!

3. INTERCHANGEABLE WEIGHTS

For even greater fine-tuning, the interchangeable weights located behind the embedded tungsten weights come in aluminum, steel and tungsten, helping golfers dial in a precise feel and balance.

4. TUNGSTEN WEIGHTS

Heavy tungsten weights are placed in the heel and toe of the putter, maximizing the heel-toe weighting and raising the MOI for an extremely high resistance to twisting. We’re talking the kind of MOI.

Our take: The Odyssey Eleven is a new age mallet design that has the forgiving shape and alignment features of a large putter head, but it performs with the precise control of a blade. Our testers found it especially easy to aim, especially the Tour Lined and Triple Track versions. “If you can’t aim this putter, then you can’t aim anything at all,” on tester said. “It’s dummy-proof. Point, aim, shoot.”

The details: Odyssey has extended the White Hot OG lineup for 2022, introducing several new models to the successful 2021 launch. Each of the putters comes with a silver PVD finish and a milled surface, a two-part urethane face insert, and a red Stroke lab shaft. Welcome to Wall-to-Wall Equipment, the Monday morning gear wrap-up in which GOLF equipment editor Jonathan Wall takes you through the latest trends, rumors and breaking news.

She’s a keeper

Talor Gooch can stop the putter search. After a dominant three-shot win at the RSM Classic, it’s safe to say Odyssey’s Tri-Hot 5K putter has earned a spot in the bag.

On the heels of a mediocre performance in Houston, Gooch took to the Sea Island practice putting green to find a solution. The 30-year-old was one of several players in the field who went through the on-site Odyssey Lab to test a prototype called “Tri-Hot 5K.” During the testing session, Gooch saw a noticeable improvement in off-center strike performance that led to the switch.

“I had a couple of opportunities where things could have taken a turn for the worse and I was able to make some clutch putts,” Gooch said after a final round 64. “At the beginning of the week, I got with Callaway and we got a new putter in the bag and it worked out pretty good for the week. I made a few putts this week.”

Gooch made more than a few putts. He racked up 20 birdies and ranked 6th in SG: Putting for the week with the new wand. In fact, Gooch wasn’t the only pro in the field who gave Tri-Hot a shot. Five players, Gooch included, put Tri-Hot 5K in play the first week it was available to pros.

It’s unclear when Tri-Hot 5K will be available to the masses, but according to GOLF.com’s Andrew Tursky, who was on-site at the RSM Classic, the putters appear to be a blast from the past.

In the early 2000s, Odyssey released a line of “Tri Hot” putters that combined three different materials; a steel body, Tungsten weighting, and a White Hot face insert. Although the company is staying quiet on design details for the 2021-22 versions, it appears Odyssey is returning to a similar tri-material design.

Tour pellets

Matt Kuchar made the jump to Bridgestone’s 2022 Tour B X Prototype ball following extensive testing with the company’s R&D department.

“This new prototype ball, what I’ve seen with my testing, it’s faster off the driver, and with the chip shots — as a tour pro, when you get that right feeling, that right trajectory, even off of a little pitch shot, you get excited, and this new golf ball has got me excited off the tee and around the greens,” Kuchar told GOLF.com.

Kuchar finished T37 in his first week with the new ball.

Free agent finds

The beauty of being a gear free agent is having the freedom to make changes whenever an issue arises — without having to sweat the brand in the bag.

For Justin Rose, that meant shaking things up with the driver and putter grip prior to the final PGA Tour event of 2021. The former U.S. Open champion switched to a 9-degree Titleist TSi4 driver with a Project X HZRDUS Smoke Black 70 shaft, and replaced the Lamkin grip on his Axis1 Rose putter with a SuperStroke Traxion Claw model.

Rose is considered to be one of the most detailed-oriented players on Tour, so the changes likely weren’t made on a whim. Both paid off as Rose finished T12 — his best showing in three starts this season — while ranking 8th in SG: Off-the-tee and 25th in SG: Putting.

Quick-hitters: Rory McIlroy added two high-bounce TaylorMade MG3 wedges (54 and 58 degrees) in Dubai. … Danielle Kang picked up “probably 20, 30 yards” simply by switching to lower lofted Titleist TSi3 driver (8 degrees). … Rory Sabbatini was disqualified for unknowingly playing a fairway wood with a small Foresight fiducial sticker on the face. … TaylorMade released custom TP5 golf balls that will make Matthew Wolff and Rickie Fowler happy. … Check out Titleist’s Tour-only black irons.

SEA ISLAND, Ga. – The RSM Classic is the last full-field PGA Tour event of 2021, so it’s really the last time for equipment manufacturers to release new product on Tour before 2022. It’s also the last time for most PGA Tour players to test out new products in competition.

Odyssey is taking full advantage of the final testing session by providing five new “Tri Hot 5K” putter models for players to test and use this week. And given the look and nomenclature of the putters, it seems Odyssey is once again pulling on the nostalgic heartstrings of the company’s longtime users and fans.

At the beginning of 2021, Odyssey released a line of White Hot OG putters that celebrated the 20th anniversary of the company’s game-changing White Hot insert. The launch of “Tri Hot 5K” putters seems to be another blast from the past.

In the early 2000’s, Odyssey released lines of “Tri Hot” putters that combined three different materials; a steel body, Tungsten weighting, and a White Hot face insert. Although the company is staying quiet on design details for the 2021-22 versions, it appears Odyssey is returning to a tri-material design.

Each of the putter models we spotted came equipped with custom “Tri Hot” Odyssey grips, and Odyssey’s multi-material Stroke Lab shafts in matching red-white-and-black colorways.

We’ll have to wait for more from Odyssey on further tech info, but GOLF.com was able to capture photos of the five blade-style Tri Hot 5K prototype putters on Monday at the RSM Classic. For now, enjoy the photos and speculate away!

At the start of 2021, Jon Rahm signed a multi-year deal with Callaway Golf and changed out all 14 of his clubs, plus his golf ball. Making such large scale changes could be seen as a big risk for an already established player, but it didn’t take long for the decision to pay off. On Sunday, Rahm captured his first ever major championship by winning the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Just weeks ago at the Memorial Tournament – where Rahm tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday while holding a six shot lead – he debuted a new prototype putter from Odyssey, called a White Hot OG Rossie S. The putter has a hosel design that matches up better with his stroke mechanics to help him find more consistency on putts from 8-to-10 feet. It also has Odyssey’s White Hot Microhinge face insert to produce a quicker roll off the face.

“He wanted something to match his stroke with what he’s doing now,” Odyssey rep Joe Toulon told GOLF.com. “His stroke mechanics have changed a little bit and he wanted to get back to a different feel.”

Since coming aboard the Callaway staff, Rahm and the company have worked closely to get him fit into equipment that matches up to his particular needs. Below, we go through the specifications on the gear he had in the bag this week at the U.S. Open.

If you’re like me — AKA, slightly putter obsessed — Jon Rahm’s flatstick may have caught your eye on Sunday at the U.S. Open.

As our own Jonathan Wall first reported, it’s a relatively new addition to Rahm’s bag. It first went into play at the Memorial (a victory he would’ve cruised to were he not forced to withdraw) and it’s back in-play at Torrey Pines this week.

Unhappy with his performance over short putts, he made a few notable departures from his previous model: He switched to a slant neck that he had previously used on his TaylorMade Spider putter to promote a more arcing stroke; he switched-up the head shape by opting for Odyssey’s legendary Rossie design (just without its traditional sightlines); he abandoned the Stroke Lab shaft for a more traditional steel shaft; and changed to a microhinge insert.

Callaway’s Johnny Wunder shared pictures of the putter from the site of the U.S. Open earlier this week, which you can check out below:

The exact model Rahm’s sporting isn’t commercially available, but if you’re looking for something similar, the Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie S is your best bet. It offers the same head shape and hosel that will (hopefully) help you drain as many putts as Rahm has using his.

A Lim Kim birdied her final three holes of the final round at the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open to capture her first ever major championship victory. She accomplished the feat with a unique setup of equipment representing four different brands.

At the top end of her bag, Kim employed Ping’s new G425 products for her driver, fairway wood, and hybrid.
