Happy Holidays from our gear team at GOLF.com. To bring you into the New Year the right way, we’re counting down our top 21 equipment-related stories from 2021. For the latest gear news, check out our dedicated equipment section, and click here to listen to GOLF’s Fully Equipped weekly podcast.

Out of all the stories I wrote this year, the Ryder Cup rules saga surrounding Harris English’s well-worn Ping Palm Lock putter grip has to rank at the top of the list. It involved a piece of gear we rarely discuss — unless your first name is Tiger — and an equipment snitch who somehow got the attention of an on-site rules official. (And here I thought armchair rules officials were a thing of the past.)

The story is almost too good to be true, assuming you’re a gearhead.

What’s even crazier is the story likely never would’ve seen the light of day had it not been for a post-Ryder Cup interview English conducted on the Fore the People podcast with pro golfers John Peterson and JJ Killeen, where he shared the story for the first time.

“I get to the course on Sunday — I’m literally walking into the clubhouse — and I get a call from Steve,” English recalled on Fore the People. “I had no idea what he was calling me about; he hadn’t called me this whole week. He said, ‘Hey Harry, I’ve got some bad news. We’ve got the head rules official here and he wants to take a look at your putter grip.’ I’m like, s—.

“I guess somebody had called in — they saw [the grip] on television or whatever — and saw the banana flap over. They deemed the grip illegal. This was Sunday morning about two hours before my tee time as I’m getting warmed up.”

English’s grip was already fraying at the butt end, revealing cloth material that was originally situated under a rubber casing. Unsure if the wear-and-tear had rendered the grip unusable, rules officials took a closer look at English’s grip and deemed it to be non-conforming.

“It was past the point of being worn down and had been deemed damaged,” English said on the podcast. “I’ve been putting with it for 8, 9, 10 years — I have no idea how long. Somehow, someone thought it made me putt better. I don’t know. I have no idea why.”

If you want to read the article in its entirety, check it out here, but the tl;dr version concludes with Davis Love III coming to English’s rescue in the dying minutes, X-Acto knife in hand, to get the grip conforming. Potential disaster averted.

In the weeks that followed, English worked with Ping to try and save the grip. But it never quite felt the same. In the end, he removed the grip and replaced it with a fresh Palm Lock. The moral of the story is you should never snitch.

1. The latest chapter in the Bryson–Brooks saga was written this week, as the rivals will try to settle their long-running feud on the day after Thanksgiving in the fifth version of the Match. Perhaps fittingly, the event will be played in Vegas, the Entertainment Capital of the World, over 12 holes at Wynn Golf Club. What’s the best-case scenario for how this event plays out?

Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): Brooks out-drives him on every hole, but Bryson trounces him in the match, giving them both reason to be irked.

Dylan Dethier, senior writer (@dylan_dethier): They each decide to take the match itself very seriously, try earnestly to beat the hell out of each other, and at one point, one of ’em snaps at the other and it leads to a lengthy conversation about how this whole thing makes ’em all FEEL. And then Phil and Barkley come in for post-convo analysis.

Tim Reilly, Director of Social (@LifeofTimReilly): The best-case scenario is some real-life drama breaks out. A lot of this “feud” has felt far too manufactured these past few weeks. We need an authentic war of words to break out to keep this interesting. Outside of that, I’m hoping there is an awakening from course designers and owners who tune in to create more 12-hole courses. That’s the perfect length to satisfy the needs of hardcore golfers and keep those new to the game interested.

James Colgan, assistant editor (@jamescolgan26): Best-case scenario? We leave with fewer than 50 cringes. Worst-case scenario? The cringing never stops.

2. The shorter length of this Match will separate it from previous iterations. How else would you like to see event organizers shake up the Bryson v. Brooks showdown?

Sens: Left-handed long-drive contest. Arm wrestling. Spelling bee.

Dethier: Let’s first acknowledge that the 12-hole thing is (at the very least!) a smart thing to test out. Previous editions of the Match have … kinda dragged. But I think Josh is on the right track. Throw a bench press on the 8th tee and see what happens?

Reilly: Let Bryson and Brooks choose who caddies for the other guy. I saw this brought up by a commenter on Instagram, and I love it.

Colgan: Love the above ideas, particularly the bench-off. Also, give us a Manningcast-style broadcast with Tiger Woods. Four hours inside his brain would be nothing if not illuminating.

3. One of the LPGA’s majors received a sizable shakeup this week, as the tournament now known as the ANA Inspiration will move from Mission Hills Country Club in California to Houston in 2023 and to a later date in the spring (potentially avoiding a conflict with the Augusta National Women’s Amateur); it also will be renamed the Chevron Championship and receive a 60 percent purse increase. While the payouts and exposure are no doubt positives, the move will at least be somewhat bittersweet, as the event has been held at Mission Hills since its inception in 1972, with the winners diving into Poppy’s Pond since 1988. Good move overall?

Sens: Bad move for anyone inclined toward nostalgia or deeply wedded to tradition. But I doubt you’re going to hear any players complaining. I hope they find a way to keep the ceremonial winner’s plunge into a pond.

Dethier: TBD. If the Chevron is fully committed to creating an event with the atmosphere and depth of the setup at Mission Hills, absolutely. Avoiding the ANWA is smart, locking down an enthusiastic sponsor is crucial, and a pay increase is a big, big deal. Let’s hope the golf course can properly showcase the elite field, and let’s hope it’s here to stay.

Reilly: Dylan summed it up well. While it’s always a bummer to lose out on a historical connection to an event, it’s too soon to say if this will turn into a better play for the long term. The LPGA has forward thinkers running the show, and that’s what they’re trying to do. At the very least, moving the timing around is a wise decision.

Colgan: Tradition is great! Money and exposure are greater for the women’s game. The big questions surround Chevron’s involvement, for sure, but the number of zeroes attached to their financial commitment would seem to be a fairly good sign they’re into it.

4. Harris English revealed on the Fore the People podcast that the grip on his putter, which he had been using since college and had begun to “flap” over, needed to be examined by a rules official before his Sunday singles match at the Ryder Cup after apparently someone had called in the potential rules infraction; the grip was deemed non-conforming until Davis Love III saved the day by performing surgery on it. Said English: “I’ve been putting with it for eight, nine, 10 years, I have no idea how long. Somehow, someone thought it made me putt better. I don’t know. I have no idea why.” Rules are rules, but is having to modify/replace an old grip a sensible one?

Sens: If it gives you an advantage, absolutely. That said, I’m having a hard time imagining how English’s grip gave him any kind of edge, or how any putter grip would do that, unless it somehow allowed you to secretly anchor.

Dethier: I’d take it one step further: Let’s invalidate all his results from the past couple seasons! Kick him off the Tour!

Nah, just kidding. This one doesn’t pass the common-sense test, and English certainly wasn’t doing anything sketchy. I don’t get it. I also don’t get what would compel someone watching to complain about it. But in the end, he handled it well, Davis Love III got to show off his knife skills, and we’re no worse off.

Reilly: The only thing I could think of is a European fan pointing this out in hopes of causing a mental strain on English’s game.

Colgan: When I saw this story, I couldn’t help but think about the story of Will Zalatoris’ putter insert, which caved after years of use, likely hurting Zalatoris’ putting for months. Is it possible English’s grip change actually helped? Maybe not, but sometimes it’s a good idea to make a change long before something becomes an issue.

5. This week marked the 25th anniversary of Tiger Woods’ first of 82 PGA Tour wins, at the Las Vegas Invitational. Many of Woods’ wins are burned in our memory banks — 1997 Masters, 2000 U.S. Open, 2019 Masters, et al. — but which of Woods’ more under-the-radar victories do think deserves more attention?

Sens: For some reason, his win at Cog Hill in ’97 comes to mind. Toward the end of his first full year on Tour. I’m pretty sure it was this fourth win of the season. They let the ropes down on 18, and a swarm of spectators rushed up behind Tiger as he played the final hole. An early sign of the coming madness.

Dethier: His most recent W at the Zozo Championship still doesn’t get enough love. The 2018 Tour Championship was his official return. The 2019 Masters was the completion of his comeback and the crowning achievement of this miraculous new chapter. But the 2019 Zozo was validation that that Masters win wasn’t a fluke — this cat could still play.

Reilly: Being the Long Island homer I am, I have to go with Tiger’s ‘02 U.S. Open win at Bethpage Black. I grew up 15 minutes away from Bethpage, and when the U.S. Open was announced, it consumed the area with excitement. The excitement was about getting to watch the world’s best struggle on our pride and joy. Bethpage is the epitome of New York tough, if you will. It lived up to the hype as 155 golfers finished above par for the championship. The only player who finished under par? Tiger. It was an equal testament to the greatness of Tiger and Bethpage.

Colgan: A win that deserves more attention from me: his victory at the 2009 Memorial. That weekend, I witnessed my brother win a dollar off my grandpa off their biannual “Tiger Woods vs. the field” bet. Andrew took Tiger and watched as he stunned the field with that famous chip-in on the 11th, and then birdied 17 and 18 to close out the win.

6. This week, we released the results of a survey that asked 2,817 golfers questions on their golf-spending habits. Among the questions asked were how much players spend on apparel, equipment, greens fees and golf travel. What part of the game are you most likely to splurge on? Travel, gear, game improvement, something else?

Sens: Travel, and it’s not even close.

Dethier: Ditto. Golf is best when it’s about adventure. So take me to a special field, and I’ll be a happy golfer.

For nearly a decade, Harris English managed to use a Ping Palm Lock putter grip with very little fanfare. Outside of Tiger Woods’ Ping PP58, it’s rare that a putter grip receives any sort of attention during a tournament week. Then again, English’s grip is anything but ordinary.

Earlier this year during an entertaining 8-hole sudden-death playoff at the Travelers Championship, golf fans were introduced to the tattered handle affixed to the end of English’s Ping Hohum putter. The grip has been around going back to English’s day at the University of Georgia.

With little to no rubber left on the surface of the grip, English logged wins at the 2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions and Travelers Championship to earn a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team. With the putter playing a major role in his most recent Tour victories, there was a better chance of a meteor colliding with Earth than English changing putter grips prior to the biennial matches.

English continued to use the grip in its current form during the first two days of action at the Ryder Cup, but things were about to change. As he strode into the Whistling Straits clubhouse to prepare for his Sunday singles match against European veteran Lee Westwood, he looked down to see Steve Stricker’s name pop up on his phone.

“I get to the course on Sunday — I’m literally walking into the clubhouse — and I get a call from Steve,” English recalled on the Fore the People podcast with pro golfers John Peterson and JJ Killeen.

Recent photos of English’s grip reveal the cloth material, which was once concealed by a rubber compound, was fraying at the butt end of the grip — better known as the “banana flap” — leaving the rubber cap exposed. Up until the Ryder Cup, English had never received a complaint about the grip, but with additional eyeballs on the event, an eagle-eyed viewer reportedly noticed the wear and complained. Was this a bit of gamesmanship? (It’s important to note that the USGA put rules in place banning “armchair golf rules officials” in 2018.)

Minutes later, English was on a conference call with “a couple of USGA guys and the Ryder Cup official” who confirmed the grip was non-conforming.

“It was past the point of being worn down and had been deemed damaged,” English said on the podcast. “I’ve been putting with it for 8, 9, 10 years — I have no idea how long. Somehow, someone thought it made me putt better. I don’t know. I have no idea why.”

In need of a quick fix prior to going head-to-head with Westwood, vice-captain Davis Love III offered his services and performed “emergency surgery” on English’s grip to keep it in the bag.

“Davis, the savvy deer hunter and knifesman he is, got an X-Acto knife and cut the part off,” said English. “We gauzed it so it would be flush with the other cloth part. He did it in a few minutes. He finished it, gave it to the rules official and the rules official had to go give it to [Padraig Harrington], I guess, to OK it. Then I went out and played with it.”

Potential disaster averted. While English would go on to lose his match against Westwood, he still left Wisconsin with his trusty putter grip. For the moment, it’s still part of his putter’s DNA, but English knows the grip’s days are numbered.

“I thought I’d have to put a new grip on before Sunday’s round, which I was not pumped about,” he said. “Luckily they allowed this, but I’ll probably have to put a new grip on pretty soon.”

All good things must come to an end.

Bryson DeChambeau’s summer has been controversial, to say the least.

As his public feud with Brooks Koepka has been reignited, the court of public opinion has seemed to side with Team Brooks. The famous leaked Golf Channel video reignited the spat, and Koepka has not hesitated to add gasoline to the fire.

For every DeChambeau misstep, Koepka has been there to troll his nemesis. One such example of trolling came earlier this summer at the Memorial Tournament. Fans were videotaped calling DeChambeau “Brooksy,” and some were shown the door. Koepka responded with a cheeky video offering free beer to any fan ejected from the grounds.

The jeers have only intensified since as well-served patrons have gravitated away from yelling “Get in the hole!” and instead focused their debauchery on heckling DeChambeau.

That’s not to say all the criticisms have been unearned. The “my driver sucks” fiasco at The Open was not well-received, and players have recently taken to social media to lecture the 27-year-old about not yelling “fore” when his ball sails into the gallery. Team Brooks’ supporters seem to grow more emboldened in their efforts to undermine DeChambeau.

The WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational provided another opportunity for the masses to get their shots in at the 2020 U.S. Open champ. Golf Digest’s Shane Ryan followed the DeChambeau-Harris English pairing during the final round, and he went so far as to characterize the gallery’s treatment of DeChambeau as “bullying.”

English shared a similar perspective after the round, coming to the defense of his final-round playing partner.

“It’s not real fair for them to call him ‘Brooksy’ a lot,” English said. “It kind of sucks, and obviously he hears it, and it affects him a little bit. He doesn’t like it, and I think that causes them to do it more.”

DeChambeau is in a no-win situation with the taunting, knowing that if he responds he’ll give even more ammo to the hecklers. But pressing on and allowing it to continue is no fun either.

“It just sucks that that’s out here right now, that they’re trying to irk people like that,” English said. “It’s just unfortunate.”

Hideki Matsuyama, as stoic as they come, was laughing. He and his caddie were being carted toward the first hole of a three-player playoff at the World Golf Championships-St. Jude Invitational, and they appeared to be enjoying the CBS drone that was tracking them from above. The mood was, surprisingly, light.

On a day where those who were up were down, and those who were down were up, this fit right in.

Consider:

— Third-round leader Harris English started the day with a two-shot lead. He led by three after 10 holes. He then needed a 12-foot putt on 18 to drop just to make the playoff — and missed.

— Bryson DeChambeau was one of two players two strokes back to begin Sunday. He was tied for the lead after just one hole. He tied for eighth.

— Cam Smith was the second golfer to start the final round two down. He was tied for the lead with just one hole to play. He tied for fifth.

— Scottie Scheffler and Ian Poulter were five back after 54 holes. Poulter shot a 72, Scheffler a 74 and finished tied for 10th and 14th, respectively.

The eventual winner perhaps summed it up best.

“I was watching the scoreboard — I like to know what I need to do and where I stand,” said Abraham Ancer, who started Sunday four shots out of the lead. “At one point I saw Harris, I think he was 20 under, and I was like, man, he’s running away with it, I’ve got to make some birdies. Putts weren’t dropping. I was hitting some good shots, but I wasn’t really getting much out of them and I was getting a little bit frustrated out there. I was like, man, I need to make a move, and I was just putting myself in tough spots or long putts; I wasn’t hitting it close.

“Yeah, it was definitely a surprise. I keep looking, I was like, man, they just came back two strokes. Another two, I’m tied for the lead? Walking off 16, I couldn’t believe I was tied for the lead there. I felt like I was maybe four strokes behind. You just don’t know what can happen out here, man. It’s crazy. It’s a tough golf course. Like I said, you get a little bit of wind out there, small targets, anything can happen.”

And everything practically did.

A closer look at the chaos at TPC Southwind:

Harris English

English overcame an opening bogey with birdies on 3, 4 and 8. But it was around this time that he and DeChambeau were put on the clock for slow play. And the threat, he said, doomed him.

At one point, No Laying Up tweeted that it heard English say on the CBS broadcast: “I hate rushing.”

Another water ball for Harris English.

He's now +4 on his last two par 3s.

There's now a 5-way tie for first @WGCFedEx. pic.twitter.com/PyshHsPpUM
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 8, 2021

“You definitely start the day in one rhythm, and then you kind of get out of that having to walk faster, having to do everything a little faster because you don’t want to get a bad time,” English said afterward. “It was tough, the wind was swirling obviously coming down the stretch, there was some very important shots in there, and it was tough. But I’ve got to learn to slow down, go through my routine and not really worry about being put on the clock.”

On the par-3 11th, English hit his tee shot in the water, double-bogeyed, and his advantage shrunk to two. It was zero after he pushed his tee shot on the par-3 14th well right and into the water again. He was down one after he struggled to advance the ball under a tree after his tee shot on the par-5 16th, then blasted his third shot right of the green on his way to a bogey.

English would finish with a 40 on the back nine.

“It is tough, and you’ve got some very important shots coming down the stretch here, some tough par-3s, some uncomfortable shots out here,” English said. “When you feel like you’ve got to rush, you feel like you’re not 100 percent ready for the shot and I did that a couple times today and that’s really the only thing I regret.”

Bryson DeChambeau

DeChambeau, two months ago at the U.S. Open, led on the back nine at Torrey Pines, only to shoot a 44 across the closing stretch and tie for 26th.

He was just three shots better on Sunday.

It's getting interesting @WGCFedEx. 🥴

Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau both find the water on the par-3 11th. pic.twitter.com/P3vXynS6Ff
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 8, 2021

DeChambeau, after a birdie on the 9th, bogeyed the 10th after hitting his tee shot 335 yards — and into the water about 335 yards from the tee. He triple-bogeyed the next hole — as English doubled — after getting an unfortunate bounce on the downslope over the green that kicked his ball into the drink. He then limped home with bogeys on 15 and 18 — and a par on the par-5 15th after just hitting over the green in two.

DeChambeau, playing in his first event since withdrawing from last week’s Olympics due to a positive Covid test, did not speak to reporters afterward. He, too, was on the clock for slow play, and English said fans were renewing “Brooksie” chants that had started a few months back in light of his spat with Brooks Koepka.

“Yeah, it’s not real fair for them to call him “Brooksie” a lot,” English said. “It kind of sucks and obviously he hears it and it affects him a little bit and he doesn’t like it and I think that causes them to do it more. It just sucks that that’s out here right now, that they’re trying to irk people like that. It’s just unfortunate.”

Cam Smith

Smith, despite four bogeys, was tied for the lead with one hole to play.

One shot on that one hole cost him.

After a drive right and into the trees, Smith opted to take a risky route through the forest — CBS analyst Mark Immelman described the window that Smith was looking to hit through as “minute.” He’d hit a tree, his ball ricocheted out of bounds, and he’d miss the playoff by two shots after a double bogey.

Why didn’t he try a safer play on 18?

“Yeah, there was a little gap up there,” Smith said. “I had to hit like a medium flight draw, and I tried to hit it. I mean, I wanted to win, I didn’t want to chip it out and leave my chances in Harry’s hands. He was still 16 under at the time. I wanted to make sure I had a good look at birdie, and I just didn’t execute it.”

The London-based bettor correctly picked Steve Stricker to win the Senior Players, Viktor Hovland to win the BMW International Open, Nelly Korda to win the KPMG Women’s PGA and English to win in Connecticut. The other two legs of the parlay were Croatia over Scotland and England over the Czech Republic in the UEFA European Football Championship.

“I’ve enjoyed watching the football, so I included a couple of Euros matches and I watch quite a lot of golf,” the bettor told Betfair. “I was sure that Hovland, Korda and Steve Stricker were good bets, but I was a little unsure on Harris English.”

The parlay had 90,396/1 odds and was placed on June 22.

When the first five legs of the parlay hit, all the bettor needed to win big was English to pull out the playoff win over Kramer Hickok. The sudden-death playoff turned into a marathon as the two players matched pars on seven straight holes before English finally birdied 18 on the eighth try to secure the victory.

“I thought he had lost it after some wayward tee shots on the 18th hole,” the bettor said. “I thought I was going to have a heart attack when the winning putt went in, I couldn’t believe it.”
