Plenty of stuff leaves town, too.

On Sunday afternoon, for instance, the winner of the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open will walk off with $1.4 million, a healthy chunk of the robust $8 million purse.

The venue is TPC Summerlin, where birdies have historically come in bunches, and the field is the strongest of the new season, headlined by world number-four Patrick Cantlay.

Cantlay is the current betting favorite, but defending champ Sungjae Im is high on the board, too, followed by Max Homa, Aaron Wise and emerging star Tom Kim.

Whatever happens in Vegas, it is always followed closely by Andy Lack, GOLF.com’s expert prognosticator. As he does each week, Lack has provided us with his four favorite plays, each a different category of wager. You’ll see those below.

As for our format, we’re keeping it the same by asking Lack to supply us with his four favorite wagers. And because we like to track public opinion, too, we’re also including data from Chirp, a free-to-play mobile platform (and GOLF.com affiliate) that allows fans to engage with the action through a range of games. You can check out those Chirp stats at the bottom of this page.

Good luck this week in Vegas. And remember, if you’re playing blackjack, always split 8s.

ANDY LACK’S PICKS

Winner: Cameron Davis (+4600)

Odds available at Bet365

We’ve seen team competitions help springboard players to greater levels of success, and even in a losing effort, Davis was impressive in the Presidents Cup. The young Australian has quietly turned into one of the better wedge players and Bentgrass putters in the world, two skill sets that should serve him well at TPC Summerlin. Ranking third in this field in birdies or better gained, Davis has shown an affinity for easier scoring tournaments, with a win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, and multiple strong finishes at the American Express, 3M Open, and John Deere Classic. Davis gained 5.9 strokes ball-striking in his last appearance at TPC Summerlin, and I expect him to improve on that mark and pick up PGA Tour win number two in the desert.

Top 10: Tom Hoge (+450)

Odds available on DraftKings

I will always have a soft spot for Hoge after correctly predicting his breakthrough victory last year at Pebble Beach, another West Coast golf course that de-values driving and places a greater emphasis on the second shot, which often comes with a wedge. It should come as no surprise that Hoge has similarly found success at TPC Summerlin, with a 14th and a 24th in his last two appearances. The 33-year-old has statistically been the best short-iron player in this field over the last year, and he’s coming off a 12th-place finish at the Fortinet where he gained 4.2 strokes on approach. I expect him to be firmly in the mix come Sunday afternoon.

Top 40: Adam Svensson (+175)

Odds available on FanDuel

I will continue to ride Svensson until the wheels fall off. The Canadian is coming off a ho-hum 54th at the Sanderson Farms, where he still gained 2.7 strokes ball-striking and fell victim to a faulty putter. Svensson has turned into such an impressive ball-striker that he’s a threat to finish top-40 even in poor putting weeks. You’ve probably noticed by now that wedge play is a theme for me this week, and the 28-year-old ranks seventh in this field in overall proximity from 100-175 yards over the last year. Bentgrass has historically been Svensson’s strongest putting surface as well, and I’m expecting some improvement with the flat stick.

Matchup: Adam Hadwin (+100) over Taylor Montgomery

Odds available on DraftKings

Hadwin deserves a look on the basis of course history alone. The Canadian has five top-35s, and three top-10s in six appearances at TPC Summerlin, including a sixth-place finish last year. Something about these greens just seem to click with Hadwin, as he has never gained less than 1.8 strokes putting here. While I trust his putter here, strong iron play is also essential, and Hadwin is coming off a performance at Sanderson Farms where he gained 3.6 strokes on approach. Taylor Montgomery, on the other hand, remains one of the most over-valued players on a week-to-week basis. Through two starts on the PGA Tour this season, he has gained over 16 strokes putting. I have a hard and fast rule about never chasing putting, and Montgomery’s statistical profile has fade written all over it. Expect Hadwin to build upon his robust record at TPC Summerlin, while Montgomery’s flat stick falls back to earth.

WHO FANS LIKE TO WIN

Here’s a look at the three top vote getters in each category, along with the percentage of support they have received.
He’s also the defending champion, and the odds-on favorite in the event. According to the bookies, Sahith Theegala, who led the Sanderson through three rounds last year, has the next best chance at the title, followed by Denny McCarthy, J.T.
For that, Andy Lack is here to help. GOLF.com’s expert prognosticator has been busy crunching numbers to come up with his four top wagers for the week.

We’ve outlined them below.

As for our format, we’re keeping it the same by asking our expert prognosticator, Andy Lack, to supply us with his four favorite wagers. And because we like to track public opinion, too, we’re also including data from Chirp, a free-to-play mobile platform (and GOLF.com affiliate) that allows fans to engage with the action through a range of games. You can check out those Chirp stats at the bottom of this page.

On to the event. May the best bettor win!

ANDY LACK’S PICKS

Winner: Davis Riley (45/1)

Odds available at Bet365

Golfers are like stocks: their value swings throughout the season. I always looked to buy them when they’re underpriced. That’s why I’m going with Riley, one of the premiere talents in the field who missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship two weeks ago due to a faulty putter. Otherwise, the 25-year-old was neutral off the tee, and gained 1.5 strokes on approach. He failed to make the weekend only because he lost a combined 8.1 strokes around the green and putting. The final leaderboard can be deceiving, Riley hit the ball better than third-place finisher Taylor Montgomery! I expect Riley to bounce back in Jackson.

Despite his less-than-inspiring course history, my numbers suggest that this venue is actually an incredibly strong fit for the Alabama native. Riley ranks in the top 25 in this field in strokes gained off the tee on long courses, strokes gained approach, birdies or better gained, opportunities gained, strokes gained total in easy scoring conditions, strokes gained tee to green on Bermuda-grass courses, and par-five scoring. I expect Riley to be firmly in the mix come Sunday afternoon in Jackson.

Top 10: Thomas Detry (+550)

Odds available at FanDuel

While most fans of the PGA Tour might not yet be familiar with Detry, I expect that to change. The 29-year-old Belgian has spent most of his career on the DP World Tour, but through the Korn Ferry Finals, he has earned full status on the PGA Tour for the 2022-2023 season. Mining through Detry’s data from across the pond, it’s abundantly clear that Detry has the modern game to succeed at the highest level. The University of Illinois graduate was one of the most dominant drivers on the DP World Tour last season, and this was on full display at the Fortinet Championship, where he gained 4.8 strokes off the tee in his PGA Tour season debut. I expect Detry to thrive at the Country Club of Jackson, a driver-heavy course where bombers have experienced loads of success over the years.

Top 40: Adam Svensson (+125)

Odds available at FanDuel

Svensson continues to be prominently featured in this column, and I see no reason to hop off now on the heels of his 12th place finish at the Fortinet, where he gained over four strokes ball striking. The young Canadian is a macro buy for me. I’m extremely high on his talent and I will continue to have exposure to him week in and week out. The 28-year-old is one of the best short-iron players in this field, and he ranks fifth overall in birdie or better percentage as well. I have little doubt about his ability to keep up in a birdie-fest. He should finish comfortably in the top 40.

Matchup: Keegan Bradley (+110) over Taylor Montgomery

Odds available at FanDuel

I spoke about buying players at their low point in regard to Davis Riley, and I believe we have the inverse situation with Montgomery. The young Korn Ferry Tour grad is coming off a deceptive third-place finish at the Fortinet Championship, where he gained 11.2 strokes putting. Montgomery couldn’t even muster field average ball-striking, and he would have failed to even make the weekend without a scorching flat-stick. Montgomery is currently one of the most over-valued players in this entire field, and I expect his putter to regress significantly this week.

Bradley, on the other hand, is a great buy candidate for me. We haven’t seen the four-time PGA Tour winner since August, but I love this course for him. The former PGA Championship winner is one of the best drivers of the ball in the field, an excellent wedge player and par five scorer, and he’s even experienced some nice success before on Champion Bermuda greens. The wrong player is favored here. Take the plus money with Bradley.

WHO FANS LIKE TO WIN

The Trifecta game on Chirp calls for users to make three picks: a favorite, a contender, and a long shot. Nearly 500 Chirp users have already made their choices. Here’s a look at the three top vote getters in each category, along with the percentage of support they have received. (Want to play for yourself? Click here!)

Favorites (players ranked 1-20)

Sam Burns (56.50 percent)

Sepp Straka (10.57 percent)

Sahith Theegala (9.67 percent)

Contenders (players ranked 21-60)

With the Presidents Cup in the rearview, the new PGA Tour season kicks back into gear with the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship. According to the Sanderson Farms Championship betting odds via BetMGM, a few Presidents Cup competitors are among the betting favorites. Here’s what you need to know.

2022 Sanderson Farms Championship odds: This week’s favorites

Sam Burns made his U.S. team debut last week at Quail Hollow, but despite the Americans’ big win, things didn’t go so smoothly for the rookie. Burns finished 0-3-2 for the week, but those results don’t seem to be factoring into his odds to win the Sanderson Farms, where he’s the defending champion. Burns leads the way as the betting favorite at +1000.

Two other Presidents Cuppers find themselves in the Top 10 in odds to win, and both of them were rookie members of the International squad at Quail Hollow: Sebastian Munoz (+2800) and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (+3300).

Sitting in second place in betting odds this week is rising star and likely future U.S. team member Sahith Theegala. The 24-year-old Californian is on the hunt for his first PGA Tour victory after a solid season last year. He comes into the Sanderson Farms with +1800 odds to win.

Our long shot for this week is a familiar face and a blast from the past: Rory Sabbatini. Although he’s currently ranked 220th in the Official World Golf Ranking, the 46-year-old is a six-time PGA Tour winner who has shown flashes of his younger self in recent years.

Matt Rum and Thomas Reinholm had had enough.

“It was one of those really engaging rounds, where the match was back and forth with different presses and side action that all came down to the last hole,” Rum says. “We were just coming off a high of competing and now we’re trying to do all the accounting and bet settling and it got us thinking, ‘There has got to be a better way to do this all.’”

But after scouring the market, they concluded that there wasn’t. Though the Apple Store was filled with scorekeeping apps that could tell you where you stood throughout a match, none of the technology enabled payments, too. This was a sector Rum and Reinholm knew plenty about, having both spent the past five years working for Block, the payments platform company formerly known as Square.

“Our first thought wasn’t to turn this into a business,” Reinholm said. “But when we realized no one had really solved the problem, we thought, OK, let’s try to solve it ourselves.”

Last fall Rum, quit his job. Reinholm followed suit a few months later, and the two joined forces on their new venture, which is now ready for public consumption.

LoopGolf launched this week.

True to Rum and Reinholm’s intent, the technology marries the number-crunching power of a scorekeeping app with payment capabilities of cash apps such as Venmo and PayPal. Once you download the app and link it to a debit card, you’re good to play a match with others who have done the same. Through LoopGolf, you can send invites and establish stakes (for now, the minimum bet is $10; the maximum is $1,000), so that everything is set when you step to the first tee. Because the app also calls for players to input their official handicap index, you know where everyone is stroking, too. At the end of the match, all the debts get settled automatically.

It’s a LoopGolf motto, Rum says: “Everybody pays.”

In this early phase, match-play is the only format available on LoopGolf. But Rum and Reinholm plan to add more games and functions: Skins, 9-point, Animal, you name it.

“We’re really going to take our cues from our users,” Rum says.

The long-term goal, and the larger challenge, is to build a robust LoopGolf community through which users around the country could connect for matches and other golf-related activities and entertainment. Among the features Rum and Reinholm hope to add is third-party wagering, allowing a user stuck at the office to wager on friends out on the course (the legalities of this would need to be sorted).

Ultimately, the duo envision LoopGolf as a virtual golf wallet for spends ranging from preferred tee times and apparel drops to tournaments and other special events. Another down-the-road ambition is to link to sports books, with LoopGolf as a conduit for wagering on professional competitions.

“There are so many possibilities,” Rum says. “But we’re also very cognizant of not creating a lot of noise and clutter, which means keeping the design simple, easy and intuitive.”

You can download the LoopGolf app here.

This past season was a breakthrough for 31-year-old Max Homa. Though he was already a Tour winner before the season began, he doubled his career victories from two to four. And it all started at last year’s Fortinet Championship.

As the defending champion this week, Homa has earned a piece of the betting-favorite title at +1400 odds to win. He shares the top spot with 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama. Matsuyama had two wins of his own early last season, at the Zozo Championship and the Sony Open, before finishing T11 at the season-ending Tour Championship.

Another player you should consider when making your bets for the first event of the season is Sahith Theegala (+2800), as well as two major winners a bit further down the list, Webb Simpson and Jason Day (both at +5000).

2022 Fortinet Championship odds: Long shot of the week

Our first long shot of the new season goes to fan favorite Rickie Fowler, who comes in with +12500 odds to win. The five-time PGA Tour winner has struggled to get back to his winning ways in recent years, plummeting down the Official World Golf Ranking, but it’s starting to feel like things are turning in the right direction for the 33-year-old.

Last season, Fowler finished 133rd in the FedEx Cup standings, but there were a few big bright spots in his year, including a T3 finish at the CJ Cup in October. Over the past two seasons, Fowler has made 28 cuts while only missing 18. It feels like this could be the year that he finally wins his first title since early 2019, and the relatively soft field at the Fortinet provides the perfect opportunity.

Should Fowler triumph and secure his sixth PGA Tour title this week, he’d turn a bold $1000 bet into $12,500.

At long last, the final event of the PGA Tour season is finally here. The top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings head to East Lake this week to compete in the Tour Championship, and according to BetMGM odds, Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to take home the crown. Here’s what you need to know.

2022 Tour Championship odds: This week’s favorites

Scottie Scheffler has not registered a win on Tour since his Masters triumph back in April, but with a two-stroke advantage to begin the week, oddsmakers still like his chances to make it win No. 5 on the year, listing him at +200 to win.

BMW Championship winner Patrick Cantlay comes in at No. 2 on the odds board at +350 to win, while Xander Schauffele (+650) and Rory McIlroy (+900) lag behind. Jon Rahm rounds out the top five at +1200.

2022 Tour Championship odds: Long shot of the week

Sahith Theegala has some of the longest odds in the field (+30000) by virtue of beginning the week 10 shots behind the leader, but that doesn’t mean you should count him out. Theegala has 11 rounds of 65 or better on Tour this season, and if he can put a few of those rounds together this week, he might just be able to make up that large gap on the leaderboard.

He’s followed in close pursuit by Jon Rahm (+1200) and some star players tied at +1400, including U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, last week’s winner Will Zalatoris and a red-hot Tony Finau. Cameron Smith also had those same odds, but he withdrew from the event on Monday.

Surprisingly, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has fallen all the way to No. 9 in odds to win at +1800 thanks to his own missed cut at the FedEx St. Jude.

2022 BMW Championship odds: Long shot of the week

With the BMW field limited to the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings, a true long shot is harder to come by than a normal week. But we think we have identified a quality choice despite that fact: Kurt Kitayama.

For a player with zero PGA Tour wins in his career, Kitayama has had something of a banner year. Among his 11 made cuts this season are three top-3 finishes: 2nd at the Genesis Scottish Open in July, T2 at the Mexico Open in May and 3rd at the Honda Classic in February.

Kitayama missed the cut last week, but he comes in tied for the longest odds to win of the whole field at +25000. Should he pull off his first-career Tour victory at the BMW, he would turn a small $10 bet into $2,500.

Despite failing to capture his fifth major on Sunday at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews, Rory McIlroy has still had a great season, with two wins among his eight top-10 finishes and only one missed cut amid the 13 tournaments he’s played. That record is good enough to make him the betting favorite at the playoff opener, to the tune of +1000 odds to win.

But McIlroy has plenty of company near the top. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler comes in just behind Rory at +1400. Tied for third are the man who overcame Rory at the Old Course, Cameron Smith, and the defending FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay (both at +1600).

With PGA champion Justin Thomas (+1800), U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick (+2200), back-to-back winner Tony Finau (+2200) and Jordan Spieth (+2800) also among the top 10, this is going to be one of the most difficult tournaments to pick a winner. Good luck.

Our long shot for the first FedEx Cup Playoffs event is pro golf journeyman Ryan Brehm. Brehm is responsible for one of the best stories of the regular season. In his last start with Tour eligibility at the Puerto Rico Open in March, Brehm went out and captured his first PGA Tour victory to keep his career alive, and he did so with his wife on the bag.

In recent weeks, Brehm finished T31 at the 3M Open and T57 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He opened last week’s Wyndham Championship with a stellar 66 before struggling to a 74 in the second round to miss the cut.

Brehm just snuck into the playoffs, but now that he’s in, the sky is the limit. At +50000, he has some of the worst odds to win in Memphis, but the payout would be substantial if he can pull it off. A miraculous Brehm win would turn a small $10 bet into $5,000.

World No. 14 Will Zalatoris is among them. Zalatoris has had a great year despite having not picked up a victory. He finished T20 at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and enters the Wyndham with +1600 odds to win.

Billy Horschel (+2000), who won the Memorial in June and finished T21 at the Open Championship at St. Andrews, is close behind.

But if you’re looking to entrust your money to a hot hand, one who will give you great value, your man is Taylor Pendrith (+3300). Pendrith nearly won the Rocket Mortgage last week. He was tied for the lead heading into the final round, but an even-par score left him with a T2 finish, five shots behind Tony Finau.

Taking the honors of long shot this week is Sam Ryder. Ryder is 50/50 on cuts this year: he’s made 14 and he’s missed 14. But he has three top-10s on the season and five top-25s.

The 32-year-old Korn Ferry Tour graduate showed some serious signs of life in Detroit last week. He finished T24 at 11 under, but if not for a third-round 72, he would have been right in the mix on Sunday.

This week, Ryder’s odds-to-win sit at +15000, and with a lot of the best players sitting it out, it’s the perfect opportunity for a winless pro like Ryder to make a breakthrough. Should he do so and you bet $10 on him, you’ll walk away with $1,500.

Despite his big win last week at the 3M Open, the third victory of his career, Tony Finau is not the oddsmakers choice to win the Rocket Mortgage, but he comes close. Finau is currently installed as the second favorite at +1400. But Cantlay (+1000) tops Finau for good reason.

It was just last fall that Cantlay was awarded 2021 Player of the Year honors. And though he hasn’t recorded an individual victory this year — he won the Zurich Classic team title with Xander Schauffele — he’s accumulated two runner-ups, a T3 finish at the Memorial and nine top 10s. His last two starts? T4 at the Scottish Open and T8 at the Open Championship.

But don’t sleep on rising star Will Zalatoris, who is tied with Finau at +1400, Cameron Young (+1800), who nearly pulled off a breakthrough major victory at the Open at St. Andrews, or defending champion Cam Davis (+3300).

2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds: Long shot of the week

For this week’s long shot, we’re going with fan favorite Rickie Fowler. After winning five times on Tour from 2012-2019, Fowler has struggled mightily to stay afloat in the pro ranks. But Rickie’s game seems to finally be coming around.

He has one T3 finish on the season, which came at the CJ Cup in October, and has made 12 of 19 cuts, including seven of his last eight. Last week at the 3M Open, Fowler shot a final-round 70 to finish T38.

If he pulled it off, it would no doubt be a popular win among golf fans, but his odds are long. At +10000, if you bet $100 on Rickie to win and he succeeded, you’d earn a cool $10,000.
