Tyrrell Hatton admitted play was slow. But he believed a pair of fellow pros could have waited longer.

“It’s not the right thing to do,” Hatton said.

His frustration stemmed from consecutive tee shots by the group behind him during Friday’s play at the WGC-Match Play. On the drivable, 291-yard, par-4 13th at Austin Country Club, both Si Woo Kim and Christiaan Bezuidenhout sent golf balls toward the green as Hatton and opponent Daniel Berger putted — Kim’s ball went toward the grandstands to the right, and Bezuidenhout then followed with a ball that fell into the water left and short of the green.

On Bezuidenhout’s tee shot, Hatton said he told Berger to back off his putt. The players and their caddies then looked toward the tee box behind them, with all but Hatton raising his arms.

“They shouldn’t have been hitting,” said Hatton, the only player among himself, Berger, Kim and Bezuidenhout to talk to reporters afterward.

Earlier in the round, Hatton and Berger were delayed twice, and Hatton wondered whether that played a part in the tee shots. On the par-4 9th, Hatton and Berger debated where Hatton should take a penalty drop, and on the par-5 12th, each player hit into the water.

“We had had our troubles down 9, where we were trying to figure out where my ball crossed the hazard,” Hatton said. “And so we were there for a really long time, and then obviously we didn’t play the 12th that fast either. So I imagine it was a pretty slow round for the guys just behind us. I don’t know if that was some frustration in there where they just were fed up waiting and thought that they should hit, which I sympathize the fact that it was slow for them, and I’ve, yeah, you don’t want it to be slow for the group behind and you want to keep moving.

“It felt like a long morning for everyone. But I still don’t think that you should be hitting up when it’s clearly a reachable par-4. Obviously Christiaan just pulled his a little bit, but it didn’t cover. But Si Woo hits it further than him, and, yeah, I mean, I don’t think it was great of them to hit up while we were there.”

On the next hole, the 14th, Hatton said he apologized to Berger for pulling him off his putt.

“I said to Daniel on the next hole, it’s like, I’m really sorry if I put you off there, but obviously I didn’t want you to hit when I can clearly see that the group behind are playing up,” Hatton said. “So there was no issues there from Daniel and he was like, no, you did the right thing.”

Daniel Berger had every reason to be mad. The Honda Classic, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., is about as much of a home game as he can get, and his five-stroke lead through 54 holes was so big it tied a tournament record.

Of course he had every reason to be mad when he stumbled early, splashed one into the water late and signed for the second-worst score of the day (74) to finish fourth, three back of winner Sepp Straka.

Yet Berger was, at least when facing reporters… reflective?

“Listen, today was a good learning experience,” he said. “I was prepared and ready to play well today, and I just didn’t hit the shots I need to hit. That’s the way golf goes. There are plenty of guys that hit great shots today, and that’s why they’re winning the golf tournament. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the game.”

Berger, 28, was eying his fifth career PGA Tour victory and hoping to check off a win for the third straight season. Instead he’s the first player to lose a five-shot lead through 54 holes since the 2017 WGC-HSBC Champions.

Up until Sunday, Berger cruised all week. He opened with back-to-back 65s and storylines were already brewing about him winning at home and righting a March 2015 loss at the same place, when Berger, a 21-year-old rookie, lost the Honda in a playoff to Padraig Harrington.

He was born an hour away from PGA National Resort, graduated from William T. Dwyer High School five miles down the road and now lives in nearby Jupiter.

“Every tournament I play in I want to win,” Berger said on Friday, when he was up three after 36 holes. “But it would be especially nice to win here having so many friends and family here with me this week. But you just can’t focus on that, you just got to take it a shot at a time and really just stay patient because it is such a challenging golf course.”

Berger opened Sunday with a five-stroke lead over four others, was six up on another pro and the next closest group was all at two under. So, no, he didn’t have many players to worry about, but things went south quickly.

After pars on the first two holes, he missed the fairway on the par-5 3rd, laid up and hit his approach into a green-side bunker. That led to a poor out, three-putt from the fringe and double bogey.

Berger said he warmed up fine and felt good, but the putts just never dropped. And it was after his third shot on that third hole, which plugged into the left bunker when the safe miss was right, when he knew he wasn’t as sharp as the previous three rounds.

“So just shots like that that I hadn’t hit the first three days seemed to be more in my game today,” he said.

He added back-to-back bogeys on 5 and 6 before holing a bunker shot for birdie on 7. He moved to four over on the day after a bogey on 12, but again was saved with a birdie chip in on 14.

Playing the par-5 18th and needing an eagle to force a playoff, Berger, from 253 yards out, pulled 3-wood amid pouring rain and found the water guarding the right side of the green. Bogey.

“It was super unfortunate at the end to get the rain,” he said. “Obviously where [Sepp Straka] hit his drive, that’s where we would’ve hit our drives and we would’ve had a 3- or 4-iron in, but that’s how golf goes. You don’t always get the good breaks. You know, I fought hard all day, and so that’s something to be proud of.”

After finishing 16th, 10th and 27th, respectively, in Strokes Gained: Putting over the first three rounds, Berger ranked last on Sunday, losing 3.807 strokes to the field. He didn’t make a putt of over three feet until his seven-foot par save on the 17th.

“Just a poor round,” Berger said. “It can happen at any time. I’m not going to dwell on it too much. Just didn’t hit quality shots at the right time.”

It was supposed to be a cakewalk for Daniel Berger. And if not that, it surely wasn’t supposed to get as close as it did as fast as it did at The Honda Classic on Sunday.

But here we are, discussing Sepp Straka’s first-ever win on the PGA Tour and Berger’s early implosion that brought the rest of the field back into the mix on the Champion Course at PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Berger, at 11 under, started the day with a five-shot lead over four others — Straka, Shane Lowry, Kurt Kitayama and Chris Kirk — and was six ahead of Adam Svensson. The next closest competitors were all at two under. But despite owning a tie for the largest 54-hole lead in tournament history, Berger gave it all back in the first 70 minutes. Soon enough it was anyone’s game, and Straka took advantage.

The 28-year-old University of Georgia alum birdied three of the last five holes to shoot a four-under 66 and take the clubhouse lead at 10 under. After the final pairing of Berger and Lowry failed to tie him on the 72nd, Straka had his first career Tour victory in his 95th start. He’s the first Austrian to win on the PGA Tour.

“The third round I definitely didn’t have my best stuff and just hung in there and grounded out a good round, and I hit the ball really nice today and really took advantage,” Straka said. “Just hanging in there.”

Berger’s troubles started on the par-5 3rd, a hole he birdied twice this week, when he got caught short-sided in a green-side bunker, blasted out and three-putted from off the green for double bogey. Then on the par-3 5th he three-putted for bogey again. Meanwhile, Lowry made birdies on 1 and 4. Five holes in they were tied at eight under, and just like that about a dozen other players had life, too.

It got worse for Berger before it got better. He bogeyed the 6th — capping a four-over-in-four-holes stretch — to give Lowry a brief lead, but he rebounded when he holed his bunker shot for birdie on the 7th. After Lowry and Berger both parred 8 and 9, they made the turn in a tie for the lead.

Lowry took his second lead of the day on 11, when he rolled in a 14-footer for birdie to reach nine under, and Straka got within one with a birdie on 14. That was the start of his key run. After parring the 15th, Straka, in the pairing ahead of Lowry and Berger, missed the green on the par-4 16th, but he missed in a favorable spot and drained his birdie putt from 19 feet to tie Lowry for the lead.

Heavy rain poured down for the last 30 minutes of the tournament, making the approach into the par-5 18th even more delicate than usual. Straka found the safe side of the green 48 1/2 feet away and then lagged his eagle putt to within inches to convert the easy birdie and take the clubhouse lead at 10 under.

Lowry (one back) and Berger (two back) prepared for their second shots on 18. After Berger dumped his into the water, Lowry, who had to lay up after driving it in the rough, wedged it to 42 1/2 feet but couldn’t convert the birdie to tie. He shot 67 and finished alone in second, one back.

Berger shot a four-over 74 and finished fourth, three back of Straka.

We are through 54 holes at the Honda Classic, and storylines abound on the crowded leaderboard. From grizzled veterans looking to recapture a spark to journeymen pros making their first PGA Tour starts, there is plenty to like about the board heading into the final round. Here are three things to know after Saturday’s third round in Florida.

Complete leaderboard here.

Daniel Berger holds a commanding lead

Saturday ended much the way it began — with Daniel Berger at the top of the leaderboard. Following a one-under 69 in Round 3, Berger holds the 54-hole lead at PGA National as he searches for his fifth PGA Tour victory.

“I’ve played some great golf but the challenge is still ahead,” Berger said. “I’ve got to stay focused on playing another great round tomorrow and if I can do that then I’ll be holding the trophy at the end of the day.”

The first hole in The Bear Trap was no match for @DanielBerger59.

He leads by SIX @TheHondaClassic. pic.twitter.com/uh4tE4kddI
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) February 26, 2022

Berger began the day with a lead, and even with difficult Moving Day conditions he was able to maintain separation from the field. He carded two birdies against just one bogey on the day to secure his third consecutive under-par round, and will begin the day five shots ahead of his nearest competitors.

“There’s 18 more holes to go and I have to play great golf tomorrow to have a chance to win,” he said. “I’m just going to stay patient and stay consistent and try to do as much fairways and greens as possible and that should be a good key to success.”

If he can replicate his success over the first three rounds, Sunday could be a coronation for Berger.

Major champ in the mix

Five strokes behind Berger there is a logjam in second place, featuring four players tied at six under, including Shane Lowry, Chris Kirk, Kurt Kitayama and Sepp Straka.

Lowry played his way into the mix on Saturday with a three-under 67, good for the round of the day, which will put him in the final pairing on Sunday.

“[I] feel like my game’s in good shape,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the challenge of going out trying to win a PGA Tour event tomorrow.”

Lowry is looking for his first Tour victory since the 2019 Open Championship.

“I just need to focus back on myself and worry about what I’m doing,” he said. ” I think if I could shoot another 67 or maybe even one better tomorrow you never know I might not be far away.”

Plenty to play for

Martin Contini finds himself nine shots behind Berger heading into the final round, but he still has plenty to play for. The Monday qualifier is making his PGA Tour debut this week, and if he can finish inside the top 10 will earn a start in next week’s Puerto Rico Open, a fact of which he is well aware.

“It would mean the world,” Contini said. “I’m supposed to be resting this week for the next Korn Ferry Tour event but I’m happy to be here and I would be glad to be in Puerto Rico next week.”

If Contini is able to make a move on Sunday, it will not only mean more Tour starts, but also a huge paycheck to boot — critical for a third-year pro.

“We were talking with my team and I wanted to set some goals for the weekend,” he said. “The cut was great, but I didn’t want it to stop there, so I’m going to try to reach the top 5 tomorrow.”

Viktor Hovland was among the first PGA Tour players to arrive in Hawaii this year, getting to Maui a week in advance of the 2022 opener, the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

But his clubs couldn’t quite keep up.

Having exhausted typical customer service options, Hovland took to Instagram Stories to express his frustration with the fact that his clubs were still in the Seattle airport.

“Get your s— together, Delta!” Hovland wrote.

He wasn’t alone. Daniel Berger arrived Sunday, but his clubs got stuck en route.

“I was a little stressed out because I knew I needed to play some golf,” he said. “A lot of phone calls with American Airlines, that’s for sure.”

Compounding the issue was Berger’s recent playing history: His T7 at the Hero World Championship was his only competitive golf since the Tour Championship in September. He needed to hit some golf balls.

It’s a story of the times. Airlines were in limbo across the country as a Covid surge compounded typical seasonal challenges of weather and holiday travel. That meant thousands of canceled flights every day for short-staffed airlines. And as it turns out, not even Tour pros are immune to the hardships of lost luggage.

What to do? Hovland’s caddie Shay Knight showed up with some Pings of his own, albeit with different specs. Hovland put those into play early in the week while he waited for his own clubs to arrive.

“I played with my caddie’s clubs the first couple days, just kind of getting the rust off, and I feel like I’ve been getting better every single day,” he said.

Berger borrowed the sticks of K.H. Lee’s caddie Brett Waldman. He changed all the lofts and lies on his irons to match his own. And he headed to the range.

“I changed the lies and lofts on his clubs, was using his driver. I just needed to hit some balls. Especially after a long flight of coming across the world to get here, I just had to get the body moving, so whatever I had was going to work,” he said.

Hovland’s clubs arrived Tuesday — though not all in one piece. His driver had been decapitated somewhere along the way.

VIktor Hovland's clubs finally arrived in Hawaii on Tuesday evening – just one problem… pic.twitter.com/w9NwTuvxHr
— Brentley Romine (@BrentleyGC) January 5, 2022

Berger’s clubs finally arrived late on Tuesday, too. But he admitted that he hadn’t changed Waldman’s lofts and lies back — nor had he returned the driver.

“I used it the first couple days because I was seeing some really high ball speeds that I hadn’t seen in the past,” he said. He debated using the newfound driver in competition but ended up going with his own gamer.

So how’d it go? Pretty well for Hovland, who is coming off wins in his two most recent starts and held the early lead on Thursday, too. He cooled off but still posted a round of four-under 69, good for T13.

“It’s definitely a little bit different in a tournament because then you’ve got to think about the misses and the consequences, where to aim, and that’s where the rust kind of shows up for sure,” he said.

Day 1 went even better for Berger.

“Didn’t really hit a bad shot the entire day,” he said. That’s how you shoot seven-under 63, just one shot off the lead.

So jot another one down in the “these-guys-are-good” files. Practice? Who needs it? They’ll beat you with their clubs, your clubs or a mid-week switch from one to the next.

The 43rd Ryder Cup is just around the corner, on Sept. 24-26 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. We know who the automatic qualifiers are for the U.S and who they likely will be for Europe, so now the fun begins as we wait to see which players land a spot via captain’s picks, which will be announced in the coming weeks. Yes, Jordan Spieth wasn’t an auto-qualifier, but let’s get real, Spieth will be on the U.S. team. But what about the other guys, the players who might not be slam-dunk picks? In the days leading up to the captain’s picks, our staffers make their case for some of those players.

Previous installments: The case for Scottie Scheffler | Should the Europeans call up the old guard, or go with new blood?

***

Daniel Berger’s career match play record is not particularly impressive. In fact, it’s particularly unimpressive. At the WGC-Match Play, Berger is 3-9 in his four appearances and has never made it out of pool play. But that’s the only negative thing you can say about Berger’s case for inclusion on Team USA.

The match play record is old news. It’s so 2018. That Berger was on the decline. He finished 2018 at No. 60 in the world. He finished 2019 at No. 154.

Now? Berger is back to being the sniper we were promised when he arrived on Tour. He’s fifth in strokes gained approach the green. He’s top 60 off the tee and on the green. He’s a rock-solid Tour pro in nearly every facet of the game and he’s armed with an iron-striping superpower. Berger is back. He’s better than ever.

The case for his inclusion on this year’s Ryder Cup team is, in fact, incredibly simple: He has played such solid, consistent golf this season that it would be impossible to leave him off.

Berger enters Tour Championship week at No. 12 in the Ryder Cup rankings. At 10,906 points, Berger is just 25 points behind Patrick Reed at No. 11 but more than 1,000 ahead of Webb Simpson at No. 13. So, going merely by the points, he should be on the team.

But the points don’t tell the full story. If you head to DataGolf’s fantastic Strokes Gained tool, you’ll find that Berger is the seventh-best American over the last three months. He’s the fifth-best American over the last six months. And he’s the sixth-best American over the last year. In all, DataGolf ranks him as the fourth-most deserving American Ryder Cup rep, behind just Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson and ahead of, well, everybody else.

Team USA is favored at Whistling Straits. They’re not looking for an all-or-nothing hero from the 11 or 12 spot on their side — they’re looking for someone who can steady the ship and pick up a couple points in the process. Berger’s baseline is incredibly high. He’s missed just three cuts in his last 35 starts. Over that same period, he has two wins, six top-three finishes and 15 top-10s.

Thinking about team chemistry? That’s just another reason to include Berger. He’s part of the Jup Crew, the south Florida squad that includes Ryder Cuppers Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Johnson and Cantlay. Few people on the planet would be more comfortable playing a fourball match alongside fellow members of the U.S. team.

Oh, and as for that match play record? You can use those numbers however you’d like. In Berger’s only Team USA appearance, he went 2-1 at the 2017 Presidents Cup and earned the clinching point with a singles win over Si Woo Kim. This year, he had his best WGC Match-Play showing yet, going 2-1 before falling in a fickle playoff. He’s a better golfer than he’s ever been. He’s a better golfer than nearly anyone on the planet. And it would be foolish to keep him off this year’s U.S. Ryder Cup team.

It is an unassailable rule of golf: never root for another player to miss a birdie putt. Beyond being simply bad juju, it’s also against the heart of the game. It’s hard enough to be successful in one’s own right; adding in the karmic influence of an ill-wishing opponent? Consider the deck stacked against you.

At this weekend’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, rooting for birdies isn’t just the *right* thing to do, it’s a good thing to do. That’s because one of the participants in the field at this week’s event, Daniel Berger, will be donating $1,000 to St. Jude for every birdie make throughout the week.

This won’t be the first tournament with a charitable wager involving Berger, who plays with the St. Jude logo on his bag. At last year’s event, he raised $17,000 after making 17 birdies throughout the week.

Berger and St. Jude’s relationship dates back to 2016 and 2017, back-to-back years in which the Florida native claimed his first two PGA Tour wins at the Invitational. His signed bag from this year’s event will also be auctioned off at the end of the PGA Tour season.

The money raised from Berger’s birdie-off will be donated directly toward St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, which pioneers treatments on children’s cancer and other pediatric diseases. The hospital is headquartered in nearby Memphis, but has eight satellite locations across the United States.

The tournament (originally called the FedEx St. Jude Classic before it was later adjusted to join the World Golf Championships schedule) has been a Memphis staple for years, tracing its roots back to the late-80s. In the time since its inception, the PGA Tour and FedEx have helped to raise more than $38 million for the hospital.

The continued fundraising efforts of thousands of other charitable benefactors like Berger ensures families will never receive a bill from St. Jude for their child’s treatment. Fans who wish to join in the fundraising efforts can do so through St. Jude’s official website here.

Performing while under pressure is hard. Performing while under pressure on the golf course is nearly impossible. Even the best golfers in the world succumb to the stresses of being in the spotlight. Choking away a lead is quite common in golf, so being able to close is an invaluable asset.

Daniel Berger was able to close out his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a clutch eagle at the last. It might have looked like the gravity of the moment had no effect on him, but in reality, he was a bundle of nerves beneath the surface.

“Winning a golf tournament just feels like you’re having a heart attack on every hole,” Berger said after his win. It turns out we might have more in common with pro golfers than we thought.

Berger’s eagle came after he hit two perfect shots on Pebble’s iconic 18th, setting up a long eagle try that he jarred for the win. Berger’s ability to put the nerves to the side and perform with the pressure on was impressive, and it’s something we can all learn from.

Here are three tips for performing under pressure.

1. Have a go-to shot

As we’ve covered, playing golf under pressure is not easy. But you can make it a little easier by hitting a shot you know you can pull off in crunch time. If you can master a go-to shot, it will make dealing with the pressure a little easier.

Berger went to his go-to shot (fade) on his approach into the 72nd green, and it resulted in a look at eagle.

“I’m usually a cutter of the golf ball,” Berger said. “The wind was a little off the right, which I think kind of helped me out a little bit, just being able to kind of hit a little cut that kind of comes out straight.”

2. Stay aggressive

It can be easy to take something off your swing in crunch time in order to guide the ball toward the target, but this often ends in disaster. When the pressure is on, you have to keep swinging aggressive. If you put yourself in a high-pressure situation, it likely came from swinging the club with conviction. Keep that same gusto in mind when you line up for a pressure-packed shot.

“I wanted to be as aggressive as possible,” Berger said about his 18th-hole heroics. “I would rather go down swinging than making a conservative swing that doesn’t end up really well.”

3. Embrace the moment

Performing under the gun can be scary, but if you can embrace the moment, it will help your performance. Sure, it’ll be uncomfortable, but if you want to be able to handle pressure, you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The more you deal with it, the easier it will become.

“I love that feeling of that pressure,” Berger said. “I wouldn’t call it anxiety, but I would call it excitement.”

Here is everything you need to know to watch the final round action of his push for his first win in three years.

Previewing AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Round 4

Well, as you may have heard from every golf outlet on earth, Jordan Spieth holds the 54-hole lead at Pebble Beach. There’s some palpable excitement to his final round at this year’s AT&T, in part because we’re less than a week from the three-time major championship winner’s last Sunday in contention. Could we be witnessing the Spieth renaissance we’ve anxiously awaited for years? Possibly! And what better venue for a reckoning than the gorgeous (and eminently dangerous) cliffs of Pebble?

Spieth heads into the final round on Sunday clinging to a two-stroke lead over the likes of Daniel Berger, Patrick Cantlay and Nate Lashley. He’ll need to navigate an afternoon sure to be ripe for scoring — even as Pebble sends this year’s field back to the U.S. Open tees.

Also in contention heading into the final round are Jason Day, Paul Casey and Maverick McNealy (all -10). McNealy enters the final round a stroke further back from contention after an unfortunate rules situation awarded him a one-stroke penalty.

Below you’ll find everything you need to know to watch the action Sunday from Pebble Beach.

Daniel Berger is having a pretty good week at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s playing for millions on two of the most beautiful courses in the world in Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill, and he’s playing them well. He followed an opening-round 67 with a terrific 66 in Round 2 and sits near the top of the leaderboard on moving day.

He’s made a little history, too.

When Berger stepped to the tee at the par-4 4th on Saturday morning, just one person had driven the green on 4,272 tee shots since 2003. When he stepped off the tee, that number had grown to two.

Berger played his driver to perfection at the 300-yard par-4, striping a driver directly at the green, threading his ball through the narrow gap at the front of the green. When the ball reached its destination, it was just under 9 feet from the hole.

“What a tee shot that is!” exclaimed Nick Faldo.

“That gap is about six yards wide,” added on-course reporter (and Subpar co-host) Colt Knost. “That is impressive.”

When Berger arrived at the green, he calmly rolled in the putt for an eagle. It’s always a good week when you make history at Pebble Beach.
