It was a few minutes after 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, and Kevin Kisner and five of his Team USA Presidents Cup teammates were stationed at podiums inside a tent at Quail Hollow. This is how they handled pre-tournament press conferences this week — half the team, all at once, quotes and takes coming out like water from a fire hydrant — and the reporter hurd hadn’t fully gotten to Kis yet, so he headed for the door. A staffer pulled him back.

Whew.

Words come out slower with his Southern drawl, but when Kisner talks, it’s quick, in the snappy way. And now we know he’s not much for standing around either. So let’s get started. Don’t blink.

We’ll begin at the top, and how he got here this week. Things will loosely flow from there, we think. Even how Kisner found out he made the team is worth a yarn. The questions were simple: Who told him, and what were his emotions like.

“I actually reached out to [captain] Davis [Love] and asked him if I need to practice or not during the Tour Championship because I was probably going to hang them up for a while,” Kisner began. “So he told me to stay sharp.

“We talked about every day that week, and then Sunday he kept calling me and then not saying anything, and I thought that was pretty odd. Finally he called me, and he was like, all right, I can’t stand it anymore. You’re on the team.”

“He kept calling you and saying nothing?”

“Yeah, we were just chatting about random stuff. He’s like, all right, I’ll talk to you later. I’m like what is going on with this? About 3:30 that afternoon, he let me know.”

“Do you think he was messing with you?“

“I don’t know if he was waiting on the Tour Championship to be over, or I don’t know what his thing was. I think probably that. Then he just couldn’t stand it anymore.”

“What were you going to do if you shut it down?”

“Hang out, hunt, fish, take some time off. Try to gain some weight. I lose a bunch of weight during the season. Then I come out here and sweat like crazy and lose it all again.”

With Kisner, there’s a conflict when it comes to these team events. On one hand, you can claim that he’s a match-play star — he’s won a WGC-Match Play title and finished second twice, including last year. And as you know, or we’ll find out over the course of these paragraphs, he’s a firecracker, a team player, a bust-your-golf-balls guy. All nice qualities. But this is just the second time he’s made a team (the 2017 Presidents Cup; never a Ryder Cup). You see, he’s also …

Short. On last season’s Tour driving chart, he was 171st, out of 193 players, and these tracks are long.

And he’s older. Team USA is youthful, and, at 38, Kisner is the oldest player, by three years.

Kisner freely admits he was called on only after Will Zalatoris injured himself last month. But he’s here. And here’s the thing with talkers. Talkers tend to be talked back to. Everything is in play, too.

Like … being short. Justin Thomas had cracked during a practice round that he couldn’t cover 243 yards.

Then there is his age. If you’re 38 or over yourself, none of this is meant as a cut at you. Just Kisner.

Even Cam Young, as reserved as they come, though also young (25), got into the mix.

“Yeah, you know, he’s my elder so I try to be respectful,” he said. “I don’t think that sentiment is shared by a lot of the other guys. He gives as much as he takes, though, so I’m not worried about him.”

This is true. Let’s start picking off targets one by one.

The age comments?

“They are relentless on that,” Kisner said. “I think that’s the only thing they have on me because I’m firing at them nonstop. So it’s grandpa or pops all the time and how short I hit it. Everybody here is a frickin’ bomber. So they all laugh at that.”

The distance comments? Kisner gets it. In fact, he even had a line a short while back ago about having no chance at behemoth courses like Bethpage Black — and playing anyway “because they give away a lot of money for 20th.” He’s rationalized match play, too.

Pick your cliche here. Slow and steady. (Though maybe it’s short and steady, in this case.) Keep chipping away. (Literally, in this case.) It’s that.

Again.

Again.

And again.

That’s some kind of gamesmanship.

“It’s really annoying when a guy is way behind you and then tapping in in front of you,” he said. “It gets old quickly. In a match-play format, I love being back there and hitting shots that they are not expecting. That’s what kills your mentality in match play. Hopefully I can do that a lot.”

“So there’s strength in being the first one to hit an approach?“

“Yeah, and when you see a guy back there, like I said, 230 into 18, probably not expecting me to hit a great shot there,” Kisner continued. “I wouldn’t if I was up there with a 6-iron. Those are the things that you can really needle guys with.”

Got time for a few more? Good. Kisner’s not done. In respect to him, we’ll go at it rapid-fire style.

Phil Mickelson? At the 2017 Presidents Cup, he played with the six-time major champ in three matches, winning two and tying another.

“Man, his preparation is pretty intense. Find out how crazy a person he really is, probably the first thing I learned. All the things he told me throughout.

“One of my favorite stories was the first couple holes, we played alternate shot, I left a few like 30-foot birdie putts short in the gimme range, and he came up to me and said, stop doing that. You can hit them as hard as you want to, I guarantee you I’ll make every one of them coming back. Phil being Phil in the most Phil way.”

Jordan Spieth? The line came here after a reporter asked Kisner how he would build his ideal player based on the 12 U.S. team members and wondered whom he would pick as his putter.

“I always take Jordan Spieth because he always pulls something out of his ass, for lack of a better word.”

College football? What you should know here is that Kisner is a Georgia Bulldog fan.

“We’re all talking about the lines this week. We watched football all night Monday night. Got some good games Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

“In ’17 I asked to sit out in the afternoon because Georgia played Tennessee. Strick [captain Steve Stricker] is like seriously? I’m like, yeah, man, that’s my squad.”

“I mean, it’s Tennessee. Do you really need to see it?”

“Tennessee is good this year. Don’t sleep on them. They’re going to whup your Gators this weekend.”

“I’m a Penn State guy.”

“You live in Gainesville. Penn State ain’t much either.”

Two more. They’re good.

Jay Monahan? For background here, the Wall Street Journal recently wrote about the PGA Tour’s commissioner’s use of a private jet.

“I feel terrible for him for that. That article about him flying around on a private jet for free, it’s awful. I saw him last night, he said, yeah, I’ve just been flying around, hanging out, vacationing all year on my private jet.”

The U.S. team holds a dominating 10-1-1 record in the matches and most expect a similarly dominate performance with LIV Golf defectors being ineligible to play in this year’s event and taking the hardest toll on Trevor Immelman’s International team.

Without further ado, let us introduce you to the players who are playing this year.

United States Team

*denotes captain’s pick

Captain: Davis Love III

Love was a six-time member of the U.S. Presidents Cup team and compiled a 16-8-4 record in those matches. Love — who was born in Charlotte, N.C., home of this week’s host, Quail Hollow Club — won 21 times on the PGA Tour, including one major win at the 1997 PGA Championship. He also notably won the 2015 Wyndham Championship at the age of 51, becoming the third-oldest winner in PGA Tour history. Love was an assistant captain on the 2013, 2015 and 2017 Presidents Cup teams and captained the 2012 and 2016 Ryder Cup teams.

Sam Burns

Career Presidents Cup record: First appearance

Burns may have been overshadowed by close friend Scottie Scheffler in the early part of the 2021-22 season, but the Louisianan had a break out year himself, winning three times, including taking down Scheffler in a playoff at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May. This will be his first appearance at either the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup.

Patrick Cantlay

Record: 3-2-0 in one appearance (2019)

Cantlay had another solid year in 2022, winning once while defending his crown at the BMW Championship in Wilmington and teaming up with Xander Schauffele to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He played all of his matches in 2019 with Schauffele and figures to do so again. Cantlay was also very successful at last year’s Ryder Cup where he compiled a 3-0-1 record at Whistling Straits, the one tie coming in the only match he wasn’t paired with Schauffele.

Tony Finau

Record: 0-1-3 in one appearance (2019)

The big-hitting Finau had a slow start to the season before catching fire over the summer, notching five top-5s in a stretch of eight events, including back-to-back wins at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic in July. He somewhat surprisingly did not notch a win in his only Presidents Cup appearance in 2019. He only had one loss in four matches, however, and he’ll be looking for a new partner as both his partners from 2019, Matt Kuchar and Bryson DeChambeau, are not playing this year. He’s picked up three wins in his two Ryder Cups in 2018 and 2021.

Max Homa*

Record: First appearance

Homa comes in as perhaps the hottest player in the matches. He won in dramatic fashion last week at the PGA Tour season opening Fortinet Championship, holing a chip shot from off the 18th green to win. He also finished a career best tied for fifth in the Tour Championship in his previous start. This will be his first team match appearance.

Billy Horschel*

Record: First appearance

If you were shocked to learn Horschel is making his first ever appearance in either the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup this week, you’re not alone. Horschel’s career resume includes seven PGA Tour titles, including this year’s Memorial Tournament, and the 2014 FedEx Cup. He’s had a mixed bag of a season, missing four of last eight cuts on the PGA Tour, but with the win in Columbus sandwiched between two of them. He did earn a top 10 in his most recent appearance during his title defense at the DP World Tour’s BMW PGA Championship.

Kevin Kisner*

Record: 2-0-2 in one appearance (2017)

Kisner is the oldest player on Team USA’s roster and has become known as somewhat of a match play savant, including a win at the 2019 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and owning an undefeated record at the 2017 Presidents Cup. His best finish this past season was a second at — you guessed it — the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, but he did rack up five other top 10s. Kisner will also be looking for a new partner as he played with Phil Mickelson in all three team matches in 2017.

Collin Morikawa*

Record: First appearance

Morikawa came out just as hot as his first three years on Tour to begin this season with five straight finishes of T7 or better, but he fell back to earth a little toward the end of the year, his first on Tour without a win. Although he did lead the U.S. Open through 36 holes, he struggled Saturday and was out of contention by Sunday. The two-time major winner, who is still just 25 years old, showed better form at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August with a T5 finish, but needed to be one of Love’s six captain’s selections to make it to Quail Hollow. He led the U.S. team in qualifying for the Ryder Cup last year and went 3-0-1 at Whistling Straits, his lone tie coming in singles.

Xander Schauffele

Record: 3-2-0 in one appearance (2019)

Like Finau, Schauffele also had a strong end to the season, finishing in the top 20 in all but one of his last 11 events. Again, like Finau, he notched back-to-back wins at the Travelers Championship and Genesis Scottish Open. He also teamed with Cantlay for a team win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and figures to see a lot of his close friend whom he has a 4-2-0 record with in Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup matches.

Scottie Scheffler

Record: First appearance

Scheffler has come a long way from being a captain’s selection at last year’s Ryder Cup. The Texan notched his first four PGA Tour wins last season, including a major victory at the Masters, and earned the World No. 1 ranking. While he didn’t come away with the FedEx Cup title, PGA Tour Player of The Year honors are a decent consolation — as well as the $5.75 million he got for finishing T2 at East Lake. He went undefeated, going 2-0-1 at Whistling Straits, teaming with Bryson DeChambeau in two four-ball matches. He also beat Kisner at this year’s WGC-Match Play.

Jordan Spieth*

Record: 8-5-1 in three appearances (2013, 2015, 2017)

After missing the 2019 matches, Spieth is back on the U.S. team at just the right time. With stalwarts like Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed absent this year, Spieth and Justin Thomas are the only players with multiple Presidents Cup matches under their belt coming into the week. The 29-year-old notched a win at the RBC Heritage this season and finished a respectable tied for 13th in the FedEx Cup. He carries a career 16-12-4 record in U.S. team cup matches and played with Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed in all of his partner matches in 2015 and 2017. At last year’s Ryder Cup, he paired most often with good buddy Justin Thomas.

Justin Thomas

Record: 6-2-2 in two appearances (2017, 2019)

Thomas may not have met all of his preseason goals, but he notched 11 top 10s last season and his second major title at the PGA Championship. He brings with him the most impressive U.S. team match record, going 12-4-3 across two Presidents Cups and two Ryder Cups. In his two previous Presidents Cups, he paired with Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler and Daniel Berger, all of whom are not playing this week. He figures to play more with Spieth as he did twice at Whistling Straits.

Cameron Young*

Record: First appearance

Young had a debut season to remember, notching six top-three finishes and was one of two rookies to qualify for the season-ending Tour Championship. Those top finishes also include just missing out on the playoff at the PGA Championship by one stroke, and the memorable eagle finish at the Open Championship at St. Andrews to earn the runner-up spot.

International Team

Immelman is the youngest captain in International team history at just 42 years old. The South African is a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, including one major, holding off Tiger Woods to win the 2008 Masters. He’s also picked up six victories around the world on the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour. He’s a two-time veteran of the Presidents Cup and served as assistant captain under Ernie Els in 2019. Many fans will know him now for his broadcasting as he is expected to take over as the lead analyst for CBS’s golf coverage, following Nick Faldo.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout* (South Africa)

Bezuidenhout had a solid rookie year, making 20 cuts in 24 starts on the PGA Tour with 10 top-25 finishes. He’s perhaps better known in Europe, having a breakout year in 2020 while notching three victories including the Alfred Dunhill Championship. His best finish on the PGA Tour in 2022 was a T2 showing at the John Deere Classic and he advanced to the second FedEx Cup Playoff event at the BMW Championship. He’s one of five Presidents Cup first-timers selected by Immelman.

Corey Conners (Canada)

Record: First appearance

Conners played his way to the Tour Championship for the third time of his career thanks to 20 made cuts in 25 starts and four top-10 finishes. One of those top 10s came last month at the BMW Championship where he finished in T5, but he missed the cut last week in the PGA Tour’s season-opening Fortinet Championship. The Canadian has one win under his belt on the PGA Tour, coming at the 2019 Valero Texas Open.

Cam Davis* (Australia)

Record: First appearance

Davis notched five top-10s in 25 starts last season on the PGA Tour. His best golf came toward the end of the season when he made his last 10 cuts in a row. His best year on Tour came a season ago when he made 21 of 26 cuts and notched his debut win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. His cuts-made streak broke last week at the Fortinet Championship where rounds of 74 and 70 sent him to Charlotte early.

Sungjae Im (South Korea)

Record: 3-1-1 in one appearance (2019)

The iron man of the PGA Tour, nobody plays more golf than Sungjae Im. Im had another strong season on Tour in 2021-22, winning for the second time at the Shriners Children’s Open and finishing strong with three T2 finishes in his last five events, including at the Tour Championship. The World No. 19 will be heavily relied upon as one of just four veterans on the International team with Presidents Cup experience. All three of his partners from Royal Melbourne — Adam Hadwin, Abraham Ancer and Cameron Smith — are not on the team this year.

Tom Kim (South Korea)

Record: First appearance

Kim burst onto the scene in 2022, finishing third at the Genesis Scottish Open, seventh at the Rocket Mortgage, and then capturing his first win at the Wyndham Championship in August to secure his PGA Tour membership and even qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He was only a special temporary member when he won, but had earned enough points to get his full status for 2023. He’s now exempt through 2024 and he auto-qualified for the International team.

K. H. Lee* (South Korea)

Record: First appearance

Lee has two PGA Tour titles and both have come at the AT&T Byron Nelson. At this year’s tournament, Lee outdueled Jordan Spieth down the stretch to defend his title. The rest of his season wasn’t much to write home about, with almost as many missed cuts (7) as top-25s (8), until he used T20 and T5 finishes in the first two Playoff events to catapult his way into his first Tour Championship appearance.

Hideki Matsuyama (Japan)

Record: 6-7-4 in four appearances (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019)

Hard to believe the 30-year-old Matuyama is about to start his fifth Presidents Cup, but the Japanese star heads to Quail Hollow as the alpha of the International squad. It was another good year for the World No. 17 on the PGA Tour, finishing 11th in the FedEx Cup after winning twice, with one of those victories coming last fall in his home country at the Zozo Championship. Only one of his previous partners, Adam Scott, is on the roster this week and they haven’t played together since Matsuyama’s Presidents Cup debut in 2013.

Sebastián Muñoz* (Colombia)

Record: First appearance

Munoz hasn’t quite played up to the same level as he did in his breakout season in 2019-20 when he got his first win at the Sanderson Farms Championship and then went on to finish 8th in the final FedEx Cup standings thanks to a solid performance at East Lake, but his 2021-22 campaign was enough to earn a captain’s pick. He had two runner-up finishes on the season.

Si Woo Kim* (South Korea)

Record: 1-2-0 in one appearance (2017)

Kim was the only one of Immelman’s captain’s selections with previous Presidents Cup experience, winning a four-ball match and losing in foursomes and singles matches in New Jersey in 2017. That season was also the year of his signature win, The Players Championship. He won in early 2021 at The American Express, but has not played well as of late, only recording one top 10s in 21-22, last fall at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Both of his partners from 2017 are not on this year’s team.

Taylor Pendrith* (Canada)

Record: First appearance

Normally for a rookie, an injury can be devastating. Taylor Pendrith missed time between The Players in March and the Barbasol Championship in July because of a rip injury, but it didn’t stop him from earning nine top 25s in 16 starts. Since coming back from the injury, Pendrith finished worse than T13th once in six starts, including a tie for second at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and a tie for eighth at the BMW Championship.

Mito Pereira (Chile)

Record: First appearance

Heartbreak at the PGA Championship overshadowed what was otherwise a very respectable debut season on the PGA Tour for Pereira. He opened the year with a solo third at the Fortinet Championship and had two other top 10s, including at Southern Hills. Of course his season will be remembered for the leading the PGA through 71 holes, only to hit his tee shot in the water on 18, leading to a double bogey and missing the playoff. Pereira was rumored to be joining LIV Golf, but reportedly is waiting to jump so he could play in the Presidents Cup.

Adam Scott (Australia)

Record: 16-22-6 in nine appearances

The 42-year old hasn’t missed a Presidents Cup since 2001 and is by far the most experienced player on either team, having more appearances than the entire International team combined and as many as the entire American team combined. His 10th appearance will break his own record for the Internationals. He also has a chance to tie or pass Ernie Els’ International record of 21 points this week. Aging like fine wine, the 42-year-old didn’t win on the PGA Tour this year, but only missed two cuts all year and had five top 10s. His back-to-back T5s to start the FedEx Cup Playoffs helped him play his way into the Tour Championship from outside the top 70 at the end of the regular season. Matsuyama is the only teammate his paired with before on the International roster.

The RBC Heritage was windy on Friday. But don’t take just our word for it.

“Tough,” Shane Lowry said. “It was — yeah, it was tough out there. It’s so hard in the trees, and the wind’s swirling. It’s quite a strong wind as well.”

“Yeah, we knew it was going to be really challenging just hitting balls, you know whatever it was, 20 mph winds gusting, maybe a little higher at times,” Jordan Spieth said. “And it’s just really tricky around this place because sometimes down around the trees you either don’t feel anything or you feel the opposite.”

“So when you get in the trees and the houses, actually you’ll feel completely different on the tee than where your ball’s at,” Joel Dahmen said. “It’s really hard to actually just hit a golf shot when the wind is going one way and you’re standing the tee, and the ball is going to do something completely different up there. So that was really difficult for me.”

Swirling, strong, challenging, tricky, hard, difficult. The wind at Harbour Town Golf Links was all of the above. And the 30-mph gusts were this, too:

“It was a crazy day,” second-round leader Patrick Cantlay said on Golf Channel afterward. “I mean, Kisner had a putt on the 1st hole that was about a foot from the hole and actually going towards the hole and then a gust blew it 30 feet off the green.”

Wait, what?!

Believe it. On the par-4 1st, after hitting his birdie putt from 15 feet away, Kisner hit his par putt from 25 feet away — 10 feet behind the first putt — after the wind gust.

A video posted by Twitter user @tbellucco8 shows more. Kisner, one of the better putters on tour statistically, began to walk the birdie putt in when he froze as the wind kicked up and the ball blew backward. Fans moaned. Playing partner Billy Horschel raised both of his hands in the air.

From there, Kisner two-putted, shot a three-over 74 — and missed the cut by a stroke.

“So that was just the kind of day it was today,” Cantlay said.

It’s not easy to explain Kevin Kisner’s match play brilliance, but the evidence is becoming overwhelming.

Kisner reached the WGC-Match Play final for the third time in his career this week, a feat that puts him in the same league as really just one other person: Tiger Woods. Woods reached it four times, but his match play days are likely in the rear-view mirror now. Kisner this week was just adding to his already illustrious career.

The inexplicable nature of his success comes in part because golf media keep asking Kisner, “What gives?” and he just keeps calling himself an underdog. We get swept up into forgetting that he’s a top 40 player on the planet.

Before his rollercoaster match with Adam Scott, he described it bluntly: “That’s the way I’ve been my whole life. I’m 5’10” and 160 pounds; I’m pretty much an underdog out here.” (At 23-6-1 in this event over the years, we’re going to use different word than underdog moving forward, no matter how much Kisner wants to use it.)

But if Kisner’s motto is to invoke the underdog mentality, what can an underdog do in match play? “It gets tiring whenever you’re in the fairway and on the green every time and you hoop a few putts,” Kisner said before his Elite 8 matchup. “They get sick of that quickly.”

Or in other words, they get annoyed. Annoyed has been Kisner’s word of the week, and just about every other week at the match play event. The way he plays is shorter than other players, but focused directly on accuracy. Should that really make sense at the big, beefy golf course that is Austin Country Club? It’s easy to get caught up in the long bounding drives of Dustin Johnson or Scottie Scheffler, but remember, this course was designed by Pete Dye. Mr. Dye, the creator of torture chambers such as TPC Sawgrass and Whistling Straits, where trouble awaits just about everywhere. There’s plenty of that at ACC, too, and Kisner avoids most of it by just playing his game.

Moments before Kisner started his final match of the week, Paul Azinger explained what “annoying” golf looks like on the NBC broadcast. “By that he means put it in the fairway, hit first into the green, just keep the pressure on.”

Work your way to the green, but do it at your pace. John Wood, the walking on-course reporter following the final match, has watched Kisner work in multiple matches this week. He wouldn’t call it a gamesmanship-type pace, but it’s slower than normal, and plodding. Kisner plays to his strengths, and is great in the moments where you can “annoy” your opponent. Like hitting it close while they wait to size up a wedge shot. Flipping the advantage, or at least the perception of an advantage. “I try to get my opponent to think about me and not his game,” he said.

When you hit it further than Kisner and have to watch him hit it close, or make putts first, it can certainly increase the theoretical pressure in your mind. Saturday night, as he sized up his opponent for Sunday morning’s semifinal, Kisner kept repeating his motto. “[Corey Conners] hits it longer than I do and stripes the hell out of it. All I’ll try to do is annoy him with my putter.”

And then before his championship match, “I want to keep staying annoying out there and see what happens.”

He did it on the first hole of the Scheffler match, too. Tee shot into the fairway, shorter than Scheffler’s. Hit it first, and hit it close. Kisner pitched his ball inside four feet, closer than Scheffler. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

Of course, Scheffler made his 9-footer for birdie. This guy is pretty good, too. But nothing about it was comfy. Nothing about playing match play with Kevin Kisner is comfy.

Kevin Kisner is as confident as they come in match play, and on Austin Country Club’s course, but even he had to believe that, facing a deficit over 200 players have tried and failed to overcome, he was toast, too.

Right, Kis?

“Well, it’s not looking good,” he said afterward.

And there it is. If you’ve wondered why Kisner is one of the best one-on-one players of his generation, and why he’s so successful at the WGC-Match Play, and why he’s been so good at Austin CC (a reporter even jokingly asked him if he’s ever considered writing a book for members), it’s this:

‘Well, it’s not looking good’ is about the closest you’ll get to an early concession from the 36-year-old South Carolinian. Still, there Kisner was during his Saturday morning round of 16 match against Adam Scott, down three holes with four to go, and history says it was actually looking bad.

Kisner went on to win, 1 up.

Through this morning's quarterfinal matches, players at Austin CC have a record of 1-221-6 when 3+ down through 14 holes. https://t.co/71s7u8YZWN
— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) March 26, 2022

In a mind-blowing stat from data guru Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group, 228 players had faced that deficit or greater at Austin CC after the Saturday round of 16 — and went 1-221-6. You can probably guess the ‘1.’ (After the quarters, it dropped to 1-222-6, but more on that in a sec.)

On the par-4 15 against Scott, Kisner stuffed a wedge to 4 feet and birdied. He was two down with three holes to go.

“That definitely changed the momentum, hitting a wedge in there to 4 feet,” Kisner said. “He hit a great shot to probably 9 or 10 feet and hit a great putt, just missed it on the high side, and for me to make that, I knew on 16 that I had the advantage because he had a terrible lie down in the rough and I was in the bunker.

“Kind of felt like the momentum was switching my way.”

On the par-5 16th, as Kisner alluded to, from a greenside bunker, he holed out for an eagle three. He was one down with two holes to go.

“I told my caddie right before I hit it, I said, we can use that wind to fly it right in the hole, I think, and it came out just perfectly and slowed down with the wind, and I couldn’t see it go in, but he said it trickled in like a putt,” Kisner said. “Those are things you dream about.”

On the par-3 17th, Kisner parred and Scott three-putted from the fringe. The match was all square. On the par-4 18th, each player was under 50 yards away after their tee shots, Kisner hit to 7 feet, Scott to 40, and Kisner birdied and Scott parred.

And that was that. In the afternoon quarters, Kisner defeated Will Zalatoris 4 and 3 — like Kisner earlier, Zalatoris would have also needed to rally from a three-plus hole deficit to win — and on Sunday morning, Kisner will play Corey Conners in the semifinals. The winner will play whoever advances between Dustin Johnson and Scottie Scheffler.

Should Kisner win there, it would be his second WGC-Match Play crown, and it’s fair for you to (still) wonder how he’s getting it done. Even he admitted the day before that he’s “5-10 and 160 pounds; I’m pretty much an underdog out here.” So what gives? For one, it’s the format. “I liken it to trying to win a golf tournament in every match,” he said. “I really love being in contention on Sunday in a stroke-play event. If I’m teeing off in 30th, it’s hard for me to get really into it. Out here, it feels like Sunday every day, which is a lot of fun.”

Austin CC is also big here. Or not big. “I don’t feel like I’m behind the 8-ball on the first tee from a distance standpoint,” Kisner said. “I haven’t played a single person yet in five matches that hits it anywhere remotely close to the same distance as me. I’ll give you an example: On 11 tee, I tried to cut a 6-iron and Will hit a 9-iron and flew it past my ball. In a lot of events, I’m dead in the water. I’m behind the 8-ball before I tee off. I love that I can work the ball, use slopes, use the firmness of the fairways and the greens to help me.”

But maybe to best understand why Kisner is a match for match-play, listen to what he told reporters after he said, “Well, it’s not looking good.”

“But I don’t ever give up. I knew I needed to make some birdies. I knew I needed him to start thinking about it.

“That’s what I’m always trying to do is get the opponent to think about what I’m doing instead of what they’re doing, and I was able to do that, I think, when I holed that bunker shot on 16.”

Nick Piastowski, senior editor (@nickpia): I apologize, but I have to go with three: Joel Dahmen and Harry Higgs, with a dark horse pick of DJ. Dahmen and Higgs are two of the most personable players on Tour, won’t shy from the exposure and most likely will offer more than a few lighter moments. (Just this week, Dahmen’s caddie, Geno Bonnalie, recorded himself standing in line to buy his man a hot dog ahead of the first round of the Sony.). As for Dustin Johnson, it could be really great, or it could be really not. But DJ being DJ should be … something.

Josh Sens, senior writer (@joshsens): Gimme the funny. The quirky. The lesser known. In short, the order of interest here seems to be pretty much the inverse of where these guys sit in the world rankings.

Josh Berhow, managing editor (@Josh_Berhow): Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler should be intriguing, mainly because those guys got so famous so fast it’s always seemed to me like we saw only the corporate version on Tour. I want to see the other side of them, if they let us in. But I also agree with what Nick said — fringe golf fans will watch and know about Spieth and Rickie and Brooks and so on, but this is a chance for those fans to learn more about guys like Higgs, Dahmen and Homa, who are sure to pick up a ton of new fans through this series.

Tim Reilly, Director of Social (@LifeofTimReilly): For a man of few words to the press, Dustin Johnson has brought us a great deal of joy with his brevity during press conferences. There’s a lot of intrigue around DJ off the course. Frankly, there’s a lot of intrigue around DJ and his fiancee, Paulina Gretzky, off the course. If we’re given ANY insight into their wedding planning and the wedding itself, that’s the most compelling reality TV they can bring us. I fully expect Joel Dahmen and his caddie, Geno Bonnalie, to become the breakout stars, though.

2. As part of the Netflix series, a Tour spokesman also said: “We do not have editorial control. We will be involved to the extent that Netflix and the producers have the access they need to film at our events. We want them to make a great show, and we all agree the documentary needs to be as authentic as possible.” In addition, the show will have access to all four majors. “For the first time ever, the PGA Tour and the governing bodies that conduct men’s major championships — Augusta National Golf Club, the PGA of America, the USGA and The R&A — will provide entry into the sport’s biggest events,” the show announced in a release. With that creative freedom, what little-exposed part of Tour life do you hope comes to light?

Piastowski: It has to be whatever we can get out of Augusta National, right? Outside of what the majority of us see on TV and on the grounds every April, there is so little we know of the Masters host. Do we get access to the Champions Dinner? Do we get access into the clubhouse? What about the locker room? On and on. Feed our Augusta appetite!

Sens: Can’t disagree with Nick here. In theory anyway. So long as it truly is something new and revealing, and not too stage-managed. How about Higgs and Dahmen take us on a guided tour of Augusta’s best fishing holes? In terms of Tour life itself, the less golfy the better. Can DJ fix a broken sink? Does Higgs have a Chia Pet collection? Surprise us. Otherwise, this has the potential to be really boring.

Berhow: Good timing, as anything behind the scenes at Augusta would be great, but don’t forget we are going to the best Open Championship venue of all this year in St. Andrews. Lots to like there. Beyond that, I’m interested in their casual golf rounds with buddies (can they shoot 62 in their sleep?), family life (DJ the dad!) and what it’s like to basically be a Tour player going into a place like Target and buying home essentials. Give me it all!

Reilly: I want to see as much behind-the-scenes action from practice round money games. I think we’ll get the most insight into what these guys are really like in those moments.

3. Hideki Matsuyama trailed Russell Henley by five at the turn on Sunday of the Sony Open, but Matsuyama played the back nine in five-under to shoot 63 and force a playoff. Then came the shot of the week (and since it’s just January, the year): a towering 3-wood from 277 yards out on the first playoff hole to set up a kick-in eagle and his eighth career PGA Tour victory. Where does it rank among the most awe-inspiring shots in recent memory?

Berhow: I’m going to fail miserably to give it proper context in a ranking, but to hit a 3-wood that far, with that kind of ball speed and to have it land that softly on a green is something my own game is not familiar with. With apologies to this tournament, I don’t think we’ll be talking about this shot years from now or anything, but man, that was fun to watch.

Sens: Don’t want to sound jaded here, but nowadays on Tour, shots like that aren’t ridiculously outlandish, not for someone of Hideki’s gifts playing modern equipment. I’m not sure exactly how to rank it, but when you weigh the magnitude of the event and the probabilities of the shot itself, I’d say Rahm’s putt on 18 last year at Torrey was probably tougher. And don’t even get me started on Corey Pavin’s 4-wood to 18 at Shinnecock. But I’m dating myself.

Piastowski: The shot was so, so good. Don’t forget what Matsuyama’s opponent in the playoff, Russell Henley, did with his third shot, from about 150 yards closer — he airmailed it over the green. In recent memory — I’m thinking the past two or so years — Collin Morikawa driving the green on the 16th at Harding at the 2020 PGA is tops, and Rahm’s putt that Sens mentioned is No. 2. But Matsuyama’s shot is definitely in the conversation.

Reilly: We’re talking about a shot at the Sony Open, right?! I mean, it was a great shot. I’d be talking about it for the rest of my life if I hit it. Matsuyama is one of the best ball-strikers in the world, and this shot was a reminder of that. But when I think about all-time great shots, I think about those that happened in majors and marquee events. I can’t put this in that conversation. I’ll enjoy watching the replay at Sony Opens for years to come. Hell of a shot!

4. Kevin Kisner, on this week’s Subpar podcast, dished on his feeling of again not being selected to play for the U.S. Ryder Cup team. “I don’t know. I didn’t give a s—,” he said. “It’s too political for me, I didn’t really care, and I don’t really get caught up in that s—. I love [Steve] Stricker to death, but he didn’t pick me this year, which I get — I didn’t play worth a s— in the playoff.” What say you? Is the selection process too “political?” And, if so, any way to remedy that?

Piastowski: Oh, like any hiring process, it is a little. Every captain has a different personality and their own thoughts behind their picks, and that certainly makes the selections less than scientific, for sure. That being said, it’s not like Stricker, or any captain, would leave off someone who clearly should be there for something petty. They want to win. Should Kisner have made the team? Yeah, I think so. Why wouldn’t you take a match-play wizard? That being said, six of the picks were automatic (and based on performance) this year, and the six wild cards appeared to be strongly based on recent form. And clearly it worked. But for conversation sake, I’ll toss this out there — why not take the pool of “at-large” players to the course and let them settle it there? There’s no way it would happen, but a play-in event would be pretty great.

Sens: No doubt it can get political. But with good reason. On top of the cold, hard stats, you’re picking based on who you like, who you think will get along. Chemistry. Has any of it ever resulted in a grave injustice? Only if you think a golf exhibition qualifies as a grave matter. If you want to get rid of any politics, go strictly by the rankings. But then you lose all the joy of second-guessing the captain, and where’s the fun in that?

Berhow: The selection process surrounding the captain could get political, I guess, but you could say that about anything in which one person is chosen by a small group to lead a slightly larger group. As for when it comes to players, it’s hard to say since there’s more that goes into putting a team together than the top 12 players in a ranking. There will always be tough decisions and second-guessing of snubs, but I can’t recall an egregious omission from either of the teams in the past several years.

Reilly: What isn’t political in the world these days? Captains are trying to put together the best team without sacrificing team chemistry. It’s as simple as that. Kisner is a tremendous match play competitor. He did a hell of a job as a member of the ’17 Presidents Cup. I think 2018 was his year to be part of the U.S. Ryder Cup team. This year, there was no arguing with the team assembled. Right or wrong, Kisner’s Ryder Cup window may have closed with the level of young American talent that seemingly all gets along.

5. Tom Watson, Augusta National announced this week, will join Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as an honorary starter at this year’s Masters. Did the green coats make the right pick? If not, who should have gotten the nod?

Piastowski: That’s a good call. I wouldn’t have minded seeing a rotating third spot — perhaps as a nod to an anniversary of winning — but Tom Watson works well for me.

Sens: Makes perfect sense. Especially since the only guy not in the field who’s got more wins will be announcing the event.

Berhow: Great pick. Well deserved. Will be a nice addition to their Thursday morning press conference, too.

Reilly: It’s time to start introducing new faces as part of that tradition. It’s always sad watching legendary figures age, but it won’t be long until we see other new faces join Watson as honorary starters.

6. The first PGA Tour swing of 2021 — the Hawaiian one! — is in the books. What’s your biggest takeaway as we head back to the mainland for the West Coast swing?

Piastowski: Jon Rahm is gonna win a whole bunch of tournaments this year. And Hideki Matsuyama might successfully defend at Augusta.

Sens: Agreed, Nick. I’ve got Rahm to win multiple majors this year, and I’m sticking to it.

Reilly: That golf needs a longer offseason. Maybe I’m just too caught up in the NFL playoffs, but it doesn’t feel like I should be watching golf again yet. I’d love for the season to wait until the bye week before the Super Bowl. That would be a great week to be front and center in the sports world. I need more time to miss the action.

Berhow: That when Hideki can putt, and pair it with his unreal ball-striking, it’s almost unfair. Also that these guys are really good and can and will eat up any course that might allow it. Lastly, I need to visit Hawaii.

7. Our Alan Bastable dished on what he called “America’s funkiest golf facility,” writing that Edgefield Golf Course in Oregon has 32 holes and a pub in the pro shop, among other quirks.
Piastowski: Whew, I’ve been to a few. But I’ll go with a course I played about a decade ago in central Nebraska. You paid whatever you thought was right and put your money in a mailbox. If you wanted a cart, there were three with keys in them. There was zero cell service in the area. And zero noise — I was the only player on the entire nine-hole course that day, and I counted only one car passing by on the nearby highway in my 90 minutes there. And the course was called “Augusta Wind.” So very quirky.

Sens: I’ll go with the Nullarbor Links, the world’s longest golf course, stretching around 800 miles through the Australian Outback. It took me a week to play it, driving from one lonely roadhouse outpost to the next, roughly one hole per town. At one of the stops, a kangaroo hopped out of the brush and accepted a big slug of beer, straight out of the bottle, from an Aussie guy I was with. It was like Kangaroo Dundee or something.

Berhow: Easy. I played a Beatles-themed golf course last summer, complete with a yellow submarine in the pond on 18. The best part? It’s a terrific value, and I’ll be back again in 2022.

Reilly: Shelter Island’s “Goat Hill” nine-hole course. Michael Bamberger describes the experience playing Goat Hill better than I ever could, and I recommend reading his takeaways here. This except summarizes my own experience, too: “I hit about the best opening tee-shot of my golfing life. When I got out there, I was amazed to see my drive was almost hole-high. I hit a beautiful pitch right at the flagstick, only to discover that the flagstick marked not the hole’s location but the direction of the hole. I still had another 60 or so yards to go.” If you ever find yourself on Shelter Island, wedged between the forks off Long Island’s East End, play Goat Hill.

But when they do get together, they get their money’s worth. Not to mention each other’s money. Which begged this important question from Drew Stoltz, co-host of GOLF’s Subpar podcast, where Kisner appeared as a guest on this week’s episode:

“Who’s the guy you enjoy taking money, though, from if you do play a money game?” Stoltz said. “The guy he hands you a 100 bucks, 20 bucks, whatever it is. Who’s the guy you get the most satisfaction from taking it from?”

Kisner answered as quickly as the player in question apparently pays up slowly.

Spieth.

“Yeah, he’s got a couple hundos to give. He’ll be all right,” Stoltz said.

“Yeah, but he’s so sketchy about it,” Kisner said. “Like he never wants to pay on time. But if he wins, he wants his cash right then.”

“Yeah, I know a few of those guys,” Stoltz said.

Kevin Kisner does not deserve your pity. The four-time PGA Tour winner has lived a charmed golf life, capturing more than $25 million in on-course earnings to go along with a decade worth of major championship starts.

But Kevin Kisner does deserve your attention. He’s been one of the best match play competitors — if not the best match play competitor — in golf over the span of the past decade. And yet even with those credentials, he has never been selected to compete in golf’s most significant match play tournament, the Ryder Cup.

Months after watching the U.S. team claim victory at Whistling Straits from the sidelines, Kisner still hasn’t forgotten about his Ryder Cup snub.

“I don’t know, man. They don’t like me I, guess,” Kisner told GOLF’s Subpar podcast. “I’ve had the same phone call for about four [Ryder Cups] in a row from about every captain. ‘Man, you were on the team and then you didn’t play well in the playoffs.’ OK, bud.”

If match play resume is part of the criteria, Kisner certainly has an argument. In five starts at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, between 2016-2021, he’s 16-6-2, including a victory at the event in 2019. In his only Presidents Cup, in 2019, Kis also proved his mettle as a team-play competitor, going 2-0-1 in three matches split between foursomes and four ball.

Between the Dell and the Presidents Cup, Kisner feels he’s made a convincing argument in favor of his Ryder Cup candidacy. But time and time again, he’s watched as players with lesser match play resumes have been selected to the U.S. team over him to varying levels of success.

In 2021, Kisner looked primed to flip the script. He won at the Wyndham Championship in August, and though he remained a safe distance from an automatic bid onto the U.S. team, was a popular choice among fans for one of captain Steve Stricker’s six captain’s picks.

But then came the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and the Aiken, S.C., native struggled, following up a missed cut at the Northern Trust by finishing tied for last at the BMW Championship. When it came time to make his captain’s picks, Stricker opted for youth — choosing 25-year-old Scottie Scheffler over Kisner and others.

“I don’t know. I didn’t give a s—,” he said. “It’s too political for me, I didn’t really care, and I don’t really get caught up in that s—. I love Stricker to death, but he didn’t pick me this year, which I get — I didn’t play worth a s— in the playoff.”

It may be too late for Kisner, who turns 38 next month, to have his Ryder Cup moment. He’ll be nearly 40 when the Ryder Cup returns in 2023, and while it’s still early, it appears the landscape for American talent is only growing more competitive. It’s a reality he’s confronted, that one of the finest match play competitors in a generation could go his entire career without a Ryder Cup start.

For Kisner, that would be a shame, but certainly not a pity.

“Whatever, it’s fine,” he said. “I don’t really care. I love playing team golf, I love representing the U.S., I’d love to be on any team possible. But if my career ended tomorrow, I’d be perfectly content with everything I’ve accomplished. If you had told me 15 years ago, you’re going to have four wins, play in a Presidents Cup, play in 35 straight majors, or whatever I’ve done, I would have said, ‘You’re f—ing crazy.'”
