After a lengthy three-year wait, the Ryder Cup finally returns this week, where a star-studded American team will take on Europe and try to reclaim the Cup. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament all week long.
Ryder Cup preview
It’s finally here — the most exciting week in golf for many U.S. and European fans has arrived. The Covid-19 postponed 43rd Ryder Cup kicks off this week in Wisconsin as captains Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington have assembled their rosters, and everyone is decked out in team colors ready to go to battle on the golf course.
At the last Ryder Cup in 2018, Team Europe trounced the U.S. 17.5-10.5 to win back the Cup that they had lost in 2016. The Americans’ 2016 win at Hazeltine in Minnesota was only the third U.S. victory in the last 20 years. They’re hoping to take advantage of home soil once again at Whistling Straits to get back into the winner’s circle.
As is often the case, the U.S. has the superior team on paper, with eight of the top 10 and nine of the top 11 players in the OWGR on its roster. The European team features just one top 10 player: World No. 1 Jon Rahm. But that in no way means the U.S. is a lock to win. Despite typically being the underdogs, Europe has dominated the Ryder Cup over the past 30 years, and captain Harrington has no plans on seeing that streak end.
