Patrick Rodgers and his team, after a season in which he finished 86th in the FedEx Cup standings, wanted more. So they number-crunched. 

“Me and my coach, Jeff Smith, really had a good meeting after the playoffs and just kind of figured out where we needed to get better, where I’m falling short of sort of the elite players out here, and I feel like we’re implementing that playing week after week, and it’s showing up on the course,” Rodgers said last week.

“Where did you feel like you were maybe falling short?” a reporter asked.

“Yeah, I wasn’t behind Tour average, but obviously the elite players in the world are incredible tee to green,” Rodgers said. “Rory’s been driving it on another planet almost, he’s obviously the best player in the world off the tee, and that’s a huge advantage that I feel like I’m capable of getting somewhat close to. And then you see guys like J.T. and Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm, the way they hit their approach shots and the way that they’re able to attack from the fairway, it’s a huge asset in their game, and I feel like if I can just kind of chip away getting a little bit closer to those guys, the way I putt it, I should be able to put together a nice year.”

“Should” quickly has become “is.” 

Since early September, when the new PGA Tour season started, Rodgers has nearly bettered his finishes over all of his seven events — cut, tie for 54th, tie for 28th, tie for 16th, tie for third, tie for 27th, tie for 16th — and he’s in line for it to continue on Sunday in his eighth. After a third-round 64 on Saturday at Sea Island Golf Club, Rodgers shares a one-shot lead, at 14-under, with Ben Martin, and the two, along with Adam Svensson, will tee off in Sunday’s final grouping, at 11:06 a.m. 

Just like Rodgers and his team drew it up. 

“Yeah, it’s a fine line out here,” Rodgers said last week. “It takes a lot of patience. I can’t force a win out here on this Tour and I can’t control the conditions and the breaks or what anyone else does. If I do a good job of focusing on what I can control and getting lost in my process of playing, I back myself every time, I feel like I’ll have a good chance.”

The PGA Tour is back in Mississippi this week at The Country Club of Jackson, and the winner of last year’s event is back in town, too. Sam Burns, who captured his second of four career victories at last year’s Sanderson Farms, is eyeing his second-straight title in Jackson.

Rules

Burns is currently ranked No. 12 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and he’s fresh off his debut appearance on the U.S. team at the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow, which the Americans won in commanding fashion. That makes him an easy choice for betting favorite.

A few other President Cup competitors will also tee it up in Jackson, including International team members Sebastian Munoz and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Burns will play the first two rounds alongside Bezuidenhout and Chad Ramey

The 2022 Fortinet Championship comes to and end on Sunday, September 18, with the final round at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. You can find full Round 4 tee times for the tournament at the bottom of this post.

On Saturday at the Fortinet, the two players who started the day tied for the lead, defending champion Max Homa and Danny Willett, failed to improve their scores, finishing with matching even-par 72s to remain at 12 under.

But 33-year-old Justin Lower had no such issues. Lower made five birdies against two bogeys to shoot 69 in the third round, moving his total socre to 13 under and giving him a one-shot lead over his veteran competitors.

Unlike most final rounds on Tour, this Sunday players will use split tees and play in groupings. As a result, Lower, Homa and Willett will play the final round together, teeing off in the final pairing at 1:12 p.m. ET.

Last season, fan favorite Rickie Fowler had designs on returning to the elite ranks of pro golf. He showed flashes of just that, including a T3 finish at the CJ Cup. Fowler played well enough to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs, but he was eliminated after the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Now that the new season is upon us, Fowler hopes to take another step in the right direction in his comeback, and it all starts this week at the Fortinet Championship. For Thursday’s first round, Fowler teed off in the morning alongside Harris English and Joel Dahmen.

Fowler’s group will wait until the afternoon on Friday to get their second rounds started, teeing off at 4:05 p.m. ET. You can stream Friday’s second round via PGA Tour Live on ESPN+.

World No. 22 Max Homa triumphed at last year’s Fortinet Championship to get his season started the best way possible, and then he kept his game together all year to finish T5 in the FedEx Cup. Homa is back this week to defend his title, playing the opening round alongside Cameron Champ and Michael Kim.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler started the first round at 10 under with a two-stroke lead over Patrick Cantlay, thanks to his top position in the FedEx Cup standings. In Thursday’s round he didn’t just make the most of his advantage, he grew it significantly.

Scheffler fired a five-under 65, one short of the round of the day, to reach 15 under and increase his lead to five strokes heading into the second round.

With tee times and pairings reshuffling after each round based on score, Scheffler will be joined by Xander Schauffele (10 under) in the second round, teeing off Friday at 1:55 p.m. ET.

Ever since March, when he captured his third of four wins on the season at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Scottie Scheffler has ruled the men’s pro golf world as No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking. So it’s only appropriate that he leads the FedEx Cup standings heading into the finale at the Tour Championship.

Fittingly, last year’s FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay sits in second place as the pair, along with 27 other top-rankled pros, go to battle over 72 holes at East Lake for the $18 million grand prize.

On Saturday at the BMW Championship, Patrick Cantlay fired a six-under 65 to charge into the lead at 12 under with one round to go. Now Cantlay, the reigning FedEx Cup champion, has a chance to defend his title from last year’s BMW, played at nearby Caves Valley.

But despite his stellar third round, Cantlay is only one clear of his nearest competitors, Xander Schauffele and Scott Stallings, both of whom sit at 11 under. One week after a surprising missed cut at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scottie Scheffler is back in the mix, firing rounds of 68-67 to reach seven under par through 36 holes — T2, along with three other players who are one shot behind Adam Scott’s lead at eight under.

A win this week would enable Scheffler to reclaim the top spot on the FedEx Cup rankings from Will Zalatoris, who is the points leader after his win last week. The top 30 players from this week’s tournament continue on to next week’s season-culminating Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta.

But there are plenty of battle-ready players who won’t make a coronation easy, including leader Adam Scott, who is projected to move from 45th to 3rd on the points list if he can claim the title on Sunday in Delaware.
