Golf may be a game of inches but sometimes golfers and their partners are required to assess those inches from hundreds of yards away.

On Sunday, in the final round of the Zurich Classic, Billy Horschel and his teammate, Sam Burns, and playing partners, Jason Day and Jason Scrivener, found themselves in just such a situation after Burns’ tee shot on the 299-yard par-4 16th hole at TPC Louisiana splashed into a lake to the left of the green.

The ball touched down on a bank where it bounded into the water. Key question was, on which side of the penalty-area line did the ball land? If it had landed on the in-bounds side of the line, Horschel — who was playing the ensuing shot in the alternate-shot format — would have been permitted to drop within two club-lengths of that spot no nearer the hole (see box 2, below), which would have left him with a fairly straightforward chip.

But if the ball had bounced on the penalty-area-side of the line, Horschel would have had to have taken his drop from the point where his ball last crossed into the penalty area (see box 1, below), which would have resulted in a much longer and more difficult wedge shot. With the tournament still in the balance and Horschel and Burns in contention, the ruling was a crucial one.

One problem. No one had a conclusive read on where the ball had landed. From the tee, it was hard to tell. From the TV replay, it was hard to tell. To any officials or volunteers in the area — yep, it was hard to tell.

So it was up to Horschel, who had kept a close eye on Burns’ tee shot — well, as close an eye as you can keep on a 1.68-inch-dimeter ball from 900 feet away. Best Horschel could tell, the ball had first touched down above the line.

“I just don’t think I could have seen the ball land below the red line from back there [the tee] because of the elevation difference and being blocked out by the bunker,” Horschel said as his group and a walking official discussed the matter. “So, for me to see it land, it had to be above the red line. But I’m 300 yards away.”

“Yeah, I can’t tell, either,” Day said. “Did TV have it by chance?”

TV did have it, but only kind of. The camera angle was such that it also made the ruling too close to call. You can watch it all here:

Billy Horschel and Sam Burns discuss a drop after their tee shot finds the water on No. 16. pic.twitter.com/4kYXbSscdv
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 24, 2022

PGA Tour rulings can make for gripping television. You have the protagonist arguing his case; other players and caddies describing whatever they saw (or didn’t see); an official in the role of detective, surveying the situation and asking pertinent questions; another rules expert — in this case Craig Winter of the USGA — weighing in on the telecast. In the juiciest of rulings, like we saw with Viktor Hovland and Joel Dahmen vs. Daniel Berger at the Players Championship earlier this year, you even have eyewitnesses challenging the protagonist, leading to some of the most deliciously tense drama you’ll see not only in golf but in any sport.

At the Zurich, no one took issue with what Horschel said he saw, but we did get one delightfully candid remark from Day, who said, “I didn’t see it splash, but I didn’t really pay attention.”

Later in the episode, Gary Young, the Tour’s chief referee, joined the mix by way of radio.

“We have to go with what they know,” Young can be heard saying of Horschel’s characterization of the ball’s path. “So, if he’s confident that it bounced there—”

“—I swear to God it bounced,” Horschel jumped in. “I know it bounced.”

When asked about the incident after his round, Horschel added, “I’m one to play it safe, but I was pretty confident that ball landed above the red line.”

And so it was. The officials deemed that the ball had touched down above the line, and Horschel began the drop proceedings next to the green. After his first two drop attempts rolled back down the slope and across the penalty-area line, Horschel placed his ball. From there, Horschel hit a nifty chip to within 2 feet, and Burns tidied up the putt.

An unconventional par was in the books, and so was another chapter of PGA Tour rules intrigue.

The American Ryder Cup duo used a Sunday 72 in alternate shot to polish off a wire-to-wire finish at TPC Louisiana, but it was hardly the most impressive round of their week. The real fire from Team Cant-elle (or is it Schauff-lay?) came on Thursday and Saturday, during the best ball portions of the competition.

On Thursday, they grabbed hold of the tournament with the aforementioned 59, a tournament record that even they couldn’t get excited about. “We played really well, made a lot of putts today on a day that was a little tricky with the wind and didn’t birdie a lot of the same holes. When you do that in this format, that’s really the key.”

Riveting stuff!

It was the first 59 of either of their careers, which they were happy to joke about, in the lead after Day 1. They extended their lead with a 68 in the second round’s alternate shot format, but start out slowly on Day 3.

The Best Ball Blazers turned in 32 Saturday morning. By no means bad, but by no means amazing. That was still to come. Team Cant-elle then birdied eight of the final nine holes Saturday afternoon to take a 5-shot lead into the final day. For the second time this week, they described it plainly — “we made more birdies than the rest of the field,” Schauffele said — and for the second time this week, they compared it to the layout of a basketball game.

“It’s the third quarter,” Schauffele said. “We finished a really good three quarters here and we have one more to go.”

A record-setting three-quarter performance, to be clear. It was the best 54-hole performance since the event adopted a team format in 2017. Finishing off the fourth quarter was no simple task. Not in alternate shot, were bogeys can pile up with slight misses here and there.

They were pushed for a minute by Billy Horschel and Sam Burns, who started the final round five under through 11. Schauffele and Cantlay helped out by making bogey on the 9th and 10th, too. But when Burns’ tee shot on the drivable par-4 16th went swimming in the hazard, they lost their last chance at an easier birdie for added pressure.

The rest of the round played out rather anticlimactically. Cantlay and Schauffele made par on holes 12-16, and when they got up and down for from a tricky lie on 17, Colt Knost captured the status perfectly on the CBS broadcast: “Start icing down that champagne.”

Team Cant-elle did their best to keep the hype down by laying up off the tee, laying up into the green and scraping out a 6 on the par-5 finisher. It didn’t matter, of course. They had won by two.

“It’s awesome, Schauffele said when it as all over. “I said it earlier this week, you know, if there’s any success I could share with someone, it’d be Pat. So I’m happy we could get it done.”

If what happened to Branden Grace Saturday would have happened at Augusta National, well, the stump would never have stood a chance against the maintenance staff. But it happened at the Zurich Classic, down at TPC Louisiana, where perhaps old, decaying tree stumps are just part of the charm at this two-man team event. This is golf, after all, and there’s a lot of bad luck in this crazy game.

Enter Grace and his fellow South African teammate Garrick Higgo. The two had played their way into contention mid-day Saturday at the Zurich, and were just a few strokes back at 21 under for the week. They were playing in the best ball format, so each player plays his own ball and the team takes the best of the two scores.

Despite the scoring-friendly format, they had just made their first bogey of the tournament — a brutal reality in a game that requires spotless scorecards — when Grace’s tee shot veered toward the corner of the dogleg on the par-4 13th. It was well clear of the tree that protects the corner, which was a good thing. No cause for concern, really, so Grace bent over to scoop up his tee.

To him, nothing bad could have happened. His ball would bound through the rough, surely, and into the fairway for a good look into the green. But what he didn’t notice when he bent over and lost sight of the his ball was that it didn’t bound through the rough at all. It didn’t even hit the rough once. In fact, it didn’t reach the turf.

No, Grace’s tee shot failed to cut the corner because it got stuck in the corner, squarely impaling itself into an old, rotting tree stump.

“Uh oh,” Dottie Pepper said on the broadcast. She didn’t really know what had happened, but could tell from the no-bounce result that it wasn’t going to be good. The next frame of what is now a PGA Tour highlight like we’ve never seen is Grace, crouching down into a squat, 287 yards up the hole, inspecting if what he had heard was true. Indeed, his ball was stuck in the stump. With aid from a Tour rules official, he peeled away one big clump of dead wood and identified his ball. Could there be any worse luck?

Talk about bad luck 😬@BrandenGrace's tee shot lands inside a stump. pic.twitter.com/QuaLZ3TafY
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 23, 2022

This is the absolute definition of an unplayable lie. Since Grace’s ball was found, and was in play, he had a few options he could take to proceed. None of them were very good, though.

1. He could have returned to the tee box and wailed away at another drive. It would be his third stroke, though, so he wouldn’t gain much in terms of advancing up the hole.

2. He could move backward, away from the green, back up the hole on the same through line that his ball rested on. That’s called back-on-the-line relief, and meant Grace would have to hit over the stump, and around another larger, livelier tree, from further away. No good.

3. Lastly, he could take a drop anywhere within two club lengths of where his ball came to rest, no nearer the hole. Luckily for him, the stump was so close to the corner edge of the fairway that he was able to drop in the short grass. A minor victory, for sure, but still incurring a penalty stroke.

He took the third option here, accepted his absurd fate and played a shot into the green from 91 yards.

“That is so unlucky,” Ian Baker-Finch said on the broadcast. “Three inches either way and he’s got a lob wedge for his second.”

Dottie Pepper put the finishing touches on the ruling, saying, “This is just plain ol’ bad luck.” We tend to agree.

We’d feel a lot worse if that bad luck greatly impacted his team’s scoring ability, but after all that the golf gods were looking down on Grace and Higgo. At least that’s what we like to think. Higgo’s drive bounded through the corner, past the tree and the dead stump, over 340 yards, leaving just a flip wedge in. He nipped it cleanly and held enough spin to leave him 10 feet for birdie, which he made.

A simple circle on the scorecard and a ruling they’ll never forget.

On the pantheon of impossible golf achievements, an alternate shot quintuple bogey ranks relatively high.

It’s difficult enough for professional golfers to record a quintuple bogey on their own. These guys are really good, and “really good” means that most weeks, a double or (gasp!) triple-bogey is the worst they’re capable of mustering. Sure, there are occasional quads and snowmen, but those incidents are usually chalked to momentarily lapses in focus.

A quintuple bogey in team golf, however, means a lapse in focus for two pro golfers simultaneously. That’s not just a lightning strike, it’s two lightning strikes, at the same time … in the same place. And on Sunday at the Zurich Classic, that’s precisely what happened to the team of Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown.

The breakdown started on the 9th hole, at par-3 guarded on one side by a large pond. For Sunday’s final round, TPC Louisiana’s green staff played a game of risk/reward; tucking in the pin on the 9th hole directly behind the jutting pond. The player who judged the distance correctly off the tee would be rewarded with a makeable look at birdie. The one who didn’t use enough club would find himself flirting with disaster.

Brown stepped to the tee box feeling aggressive. Team Kisner/Brown stood a country mile behind the leading pair of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, but had plenty of ground to make up down the back nine on the rest of the field. A strong finish could vault them 10 or more places up the leaderboard, which could, in turn, double their paycheck for the week.

Brown hit a high, arcing tee shot aiming for the small slab of green space right next to the flag. But when his ball returned to the earth, it landed a clean 10 yards short of where he’d hoped and dropped directly into the pond.

No worries, Brown surely thought. So long as Kisner took care of business on the chip shot, the pair would face a putt for bogey. Nothing to worry about, right? Wrong.

On the next shot, a 30-yard chip, Kisner dumped his chip into the water. Now it was Brown’s turn to hit the pair’s fifth shot on the par-3 … and they still hadn’t reached the green.

But the carnage wasn’t over there. Brown chunked the duo’s next chip into the water — their third water ball in just three swings.

“No, no, no!” Steve Burkowski added from the broadcast tower.

Finally, on his second try from 30 yards (the pair’s 7th shot), Kisner landed his approach safely on the putting surface.

On the ensuing putt, Brown found the bottom of the cup, and the two golfers departed from the par-3 ninth with a career first (and with any luck, also a last): an alternate shot, quintuple bogey 8.

Golf’s preeminent Ryder Cup bromance is taking their relationship to the next level at the 2022 Zurich Classic. Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay — who formed two halves of the United States’ most dominant pairing at Whistling Straits in September — are rekindling things in New Orleans this week to great success. Schauffele and Cantlay enter Sunday’s final round leading the tournament after a series of ridiculous four-ball performances to start the week. They’ll look to parlay that early week success into another triumphant team victory on Sunday afternoon, and they’ll enter the final round with a hefty five-stroke lead to do so.

The 2022 Zurich Classic of New Orleans comes to an end on Sunday with the final round at TPC Louisiana. Here’s what you need to know to watch Round 4 on TV or online.

Previewing Zurich Classic Round 4

The third round of the Zurich was a birdie fest from start to finish. With the players competing in the four ball format, in which teammates play their own balls and take the best score between them per hole, a lot of teams went low. One of those teams happened to already be in the lead before the round began.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who starred together at the 2021 Ryder Cup last fall, shot a 12-under 60 on Saturday to build a big five-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round. One thing is for sure, with alternate shot coming back for Round 4, scores are definitely going to be higher. We’ll see if anyone can make up enough ground to catch the leaders.

When the Zurich Classic switched to a team event back in 2017, it wouldn’t have been surprising if the tournament struggled to attract star players in the field. But on Saturday at TPC Louisiana, many of golf’s biggest names duked it out in a barrage of birdies everyone could enjoy.

By day’s end, the leaders were the same as when the round started: World No. 12 Xander Schauffele and World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay.
The pair had sterling individual resumes coming into the event. Schauffele won the Olympic gold medal and cemented himself among the elite young players in the game in 2021. Cantlay won a little trophy called PGA Tour Player of the Year and many millions with his first FedEx Cup title.

But the fearsome duo have a fearsome resume together as well. Last fall at the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, Schauffele and Cantlay teamed up to go 2-0 together, playing a big part in the U.S. team’s victory, which they hope will be the first of many wearing the stars and stripes.

Back in New Orleans, the American stars smartly decided to put their talents together. As a result, they’ve excelled in both formats, shooting a 59 in four ball on Thursday and an impressive 68 in alternate shot on Friday.

On Saturday, however, they got off to somewhat of a slow start, at least by the standard they set in Round 1. But an eagle by Cantlay at the par-5 7th got them going, moving them to four under on the day.

They really got to business on the back nine.

Four-straight birdies came at holes 10-13, before a brief pause in the assault with a par at the par-3 14th. They followed that up with four-straight birdies to close out the round, good enough for a 28 on the back and a 12-under 60 for the day.

The sterling round leaves Schauffele and Cantlay at a record 29 under for the tournament, five strokes ahead of Garrick Higgo and Branden Grace in second.

But plenty of other stars are lurking close behind on the leaderboard. Jason Day and fellow Australian Jason Scrivener are T3 at 23 under and Bubba Watson and Harold Varner III are at 19 under.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler and partner Ryan Palmer, who won the 2019 Zurich, find themselves with an outside shot at victory at 17 under. Should they pull it off, it would be Scheffler’s third in a row. They’re tied with the defending champions this week, Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman.

But with another round of alternate shot awaiting the field on Sunday, it might take a miracle to knock Schauffele and Cantlay off their perch.
