More than 11 years later, Stewart Cink is a PGA Tour champion once again.

The 47-year-old polished off consecutive 65s on the weekend in Napa, Calif. at the Safeway Open to win by two, his first victory since he famously beat Tom Watson at the 2009 British Open at Turnberry. Cink made just one bogey in his final 40 holes at Silverado Resort and Spa.

Cink’s son Reagan was on the bag caddying for him this week, and thanks to altered regulations his wife Lisa was among the few walking outside the ropes Sunday afternoon. A PGA Tour working through the pandemic offers a different scene, and talking with family members during rounds was a welcomed one for the Cinks.

“I was just comfortable winning or not winning today,” Cink said afterward. He said his improved, thankful mentality was key in keeping him calm throughout the finishing stretch, and the week as a whole.

Stewart showed no weaknesses this week, finishing in the top 25 in the field in every Strokes Gained statistic. He averaged 300 yards off the tee on the weekend, hitting 21 of 28 fairways. That’s how you set yourself up for success.

Finishing from an early position, there was plenty of congratulations and waiting that Cink had to work through before the victory became official. His biggest competition was the charging Harry Higgs, who needed to hole out from the fairway on 18 to tie. But when Higgs’ approach refused to turn back toward the hole, the event was all but over.

After Doc Redman opened the morning with a 62, the tournament was held in question for much of the day. Only very late did it become clear that Cink was the favorite to win. He chipped in for a surprising birdie on the par-3 11th to reach 19 under and cruised quite effortlessly on the way in, making two birdies on very gettable par 5s. In the end, it was a straightforward 3-footer that sealed the deal.

On Sunday morning at the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., 11 golfers woke up within two strokes of the lead.

At the very top of the pile were Brian Stuard, Cameron Percy and James Hahn. The trio of players entered the final round tied for first at 16 under after the three players combined to shoot nine rounds in the 60s to open the weekend. But for all the work Stuard, Percy and Hahn did to put themselves in the pole position heading into Sunday, this year’s Safeway has fallen under the influence of one Harry Higgs.

Previewing Safeway Open final round

The final round of the Safeway is setting up to be a thriller. Lots of birdies have been falling all week long, and with 18 holes to play, 11 players are within two shots of the lead. Only three players can lay claim to a share of that lead, though.

Brian Stuard shot a 66 in Saturday’s third round to reach 16 under. Cameron Percy (68) and James Hahn (67) also reached 16 under, leaving them knotted on top heading into the final round. Stuard and Hahn both have already tasted victory on Tour, with three wins between them. But 46-year-old Percy will be gunning for his first ever trip to the PGA Tour winner’s circle.

Further down the leaderboard you’ll find a World Golf Hall of Famer with 44 Tour wins on his resume, that is none other than 50-year-old Phil Mickelson. Phil managed a two-under 70 on Saturday to get to eight under, but he’ll need a miracle to pull off a victory on Sunday. Either way, barring a collapse on Sunday, he’s played well enough to carry plenty of confidence into the U.S. Open next week.

Three players lead after three rounds. None of them has led often after four. One has two victories, one has one, and one has none. Each will look to make history, though it hasn’t frequently been on their side. Here are three things you should know after Saturday’s third round at the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa North in Napa, Calif., the first event of the PGA Tour’s new season.

Three players are tied for the lead

Co-leader @CameronPercy1 is in search of his first TOUR win.

Shots like this will boost the confidence. 🎯 pic.twitter.com/usw244V6Fp
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 13, 2020

James Hahn won the 2016 Wells Fargo Championship and the 2015 Northern Trust Open. Brian Stuard won the 2016 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Cameron Percy has never won on the PGA Tour. Each is 18 holes away from victory.

Stuard shot a 6-under 66, Hahn a 5-under 67 and Percy a 4-under 68 to sit at 16-under overall and share a one-stroke lead over three other players.

Stuard and Hahn played bogey-free, while Percy made six birdies and two bogeys.

“It would mean the world to me,” Percy said of winning. “Yeah, it would be fantastic. It would mean I get to go to Augusta, which is a goal. I’ve never been to Augusta, which is the biggest goal you have when you come over here. I just thought I’d get there, I haven’t got there yet, so it’s a big deal.”

29 golfers are five shots behind or better

A whopping 29 golfers are five shots behind or better.

Kristoffer Ventura, Sam Burns and Harry Higgs are at 15-under and one shot back. Emiliano Grillo, Stewart Cink, Doug Ghim, D.J. Trahan and Russell Knox are at 14-under and two shots back.

Six golfers are at 13-under, 11 golfers are at 12-under, and four golfers are 11-under.

Phil Mickelson is eight strokes back

Here's another edition of "Don't try this at home" with @PhilMickelson. #QuickHits pic.twitter.com/67d62r18QL
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 12, 2020

The most decorated player in the field believes he played his worst round in the past quarter-year.

Phil Mickelson shot a 2-under and is at 8-under overall, eight shots behind the leaders.

It could have been a lot better, he said.

“This is the worst I’ve played in the last three months,” Mickelson said.

“And it’s deceptive because I didn’t make a bogey, but I didn’t drive it well, I didn’t chip it well and I didn’t putt well,” he continued. “I turned a 64 into a 70, and I’ve got some work to do. But heading into this week or the last three, four weeks, I was playing really well, so hopefully it’s not far away.”

Here’s what you need to know to watch the third round.

Previewing Safeway Open Round 3

Phil Mickelson didn’t look good in Round 1 on Thursday (71), but one day made a whole lot of difference. At risk of missing the cut and heading home early on Friday, Mickelson found the game that earned him a win in his Champions Tour debut, putting together a flawless round of five-under 67. That moved Phil to six under for the tournament, well within the cut line, and only nine shots off the lead.

The leader after two rounds is 24-year-old Sam Burns. Burns recorded only one top-10 last season, but he’s on track to match that in the first event of the new one. Burns backed up his opening-round 64 with a seven-under 67 on Friday to take a two-shot lead.

The man in sole possession of second place after 36 holes is Harry Higgs, but it took some fireworks to get him there. Higgs arrived at his final hole of Round 2, the par-5 9th hole a Silverado Resort, in great shape, seven under for the day and 10 under for the tournament. But the best was yet to come. Higgs incredibly holed his 230-yard second shot for a rare albatross, instantly moving him to 13 under, just ahead of a group of players at 12 under.

The leader leads. One-hundred-and-fifty-six players played. Yeah, yeah. It happens. The player in second holed out his second shot on his par-5, finishing hole. An albatross. It happens. Once in every 6 million shots. Here are three things you should know after Friday’s second round at the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort and Spa North in Napa, Calif., the first event of the PGA Tour’s new season.

Sam Burns leads

Several shots happened on Sam Burns’ second hole. He knocked his first one in the water. He finished with a double bogey.

Few shots happened after that. He played the next seven holes at 5-under, and he played the back nine at 4-under for a 7-under 65, a 15-under total and a two-stroke lead over Harry Higgs.

“I think it pissed me off a little bit, woke me up, I guess,” Burns said of the double bogey. “It was early, cold. It was kind of like it picked me up, like, ‘Hey, let’s go.’ Just kind of stuck with it, and the golf course opened up for me the rest of the day.”

Harry Higgs makes a walk-off albatross

From 230 yards out on his final hole of the day … 👀

A walk-off albatross for @HarryHiggs1991!#QuickHits pic.twitter.com/v9HJGUJmlF
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 11, 2020

Higgs had been five shots behind Burns. He finished two shots behind with one swing.

Higgs’ second shot on the par-5, 557-yard 9th hole, Higgs’ last hole after starting on the back nine, flew 230 yards, took four bounces and rolled about 10 feet before dropping into the cup. A 2. On a par-5. Higgs had been 10-under. He finished 13-under. An albatross (a 6-million-to-one shot, according to the PGA’s website). To jump into contention. To end his round.

“Somebody, the guy, the volunteer off the left just started screaming and then he said, ‘It’s in the hole, it’s in the hole!’” Higgs said. “I mean, I just – I didn’t know what – I don’t really remember what I did. I guess maybe I’ll be able to see it, but I just took my club and threw it on the ground. It was just full panic. At least I didn’t throw the club, that was probably a good thing.”

Cameron Percy, Russell Knox and D.J. Trahan are at 12-under and three shots out of the lead, James Hahn and Doug Ghim are at 11-under and four back, and Pat Perez, Rob Oppenheim, Tom Hoge and Brian Stuard are 10-under and five back.

Phil Mickelson is at 6-under.

Jordan Spieth misses the cut

Among the players missing the cut, at 5-under, were Jordan Spieth, Sergio Garcia and Shane Lowry.

The ending was good.

The celebration was so good.

Harry Higgs’ second shot on the par-5, 557-yard 9th hole at the Silverado Resort and Spa North course, Higgs’ last hole after starting Friday’s second round of the Safeway Open on the back nine, flew 230 yards, took four bounces and rolled about 10 feet before dropping into the cup. A 2. On a par-5. Higgs had been 10-under and five strokes out of the lead. He finished 13-under and two strokes out. To finish his second round Friday at the Safeway Open.

A volunteer to the left of the fairway, Higgs said, started to scream and said, “It’s in the hole, it’s in the hole!”

Higgs took his 4-iron and slammed it to the ground.

He fist-bumped playing partners Harold Varner III and Robby Shelton. He fist-bumped the caddies.

He picked up his club and took about 10 steps toward the hole. He raised both arms and a wide smile broke out under his black sunglasses. He lowered his arms. He raised them again.

So good.

“I mean, I just – I didn’t know what – I don’t really remember what I did,” Higgs said. “I guess maybe I’ll be able to see it, but I just took my club and threw it on the ground. It was just full panic. At least I didn’t throw the club – that was probably a good thing. As long as it just went, you know, from 6 feet and throw it into the ground. You get so amped up and excited, I might fling that thing and Lord knows where it goes.

“I’m sure it looked funny and ridiculous. I’m sure it could probably be a “not top-10 play” just based on the poor reaction that I gave it. No, I mean, what a great way to finish. I had a little panic freakout, jump for joy and then I threw my club.”

“I hope that I can, like, calm down in an hour or so so I can take a nap,” Higgs said. “My brother and I were joking – I was looking forward to a nap all day long and I might be too jacked up now to actually fall asleep.”
