On Tuesday, legendary golf instructor Peter Kostis unexpectedly caught Phil’s attention with a tweet about swing training. It was a bit of a role reversal for Kostis, in that he was requesting help with a golf mechanics question, instead of dishing out the tips himself.

Kostis was mystified by non-dominant swing training, where golfers practice swinging from their weak side to improve their normal swing, writing, “someone has to explain the science behind non-dominant swinging improving dominant swing speed. Making my car go 0-60 in 4 sec. in reverse, doesn’t make [it] go faster in drive.”

While I'm a proponent of over/ under speed training, someone has to explain the science behind non-dominant swinging improving dominant swing speed. Making my car go 0-60 in 4 sec. in reverse, doesn't make to go faster in drive. Discuss…
— Peter Kostis (@peterjkostis) October 5, 2021

Dr. Mickelson was more than happy to assist.

Two hours after Kostis posted his original tweet, Mickelson responded, and not with his customary jokes or sarcasm, but with pure science, writing, “Your body won’t accelerate faster than it can stop. Accelerating the opposite way strengthens the decelerating muscles in your normal swing. This will raise your body’s internal governor allowing you to swing faster.”

Your body won’t accelerate faster than it can stop.

Unsatisfied with his own explanation, Phil expanded on the idea with another reply, “A race car’s top speed has a lot to do with its breaking system (not it’s ability to go fast in reverse) The human body’s ability to create speed is dependent on it’s ability to slow down and stop as well. Another way to think of it.”

A race car’s top speed has a lot to do with its breaking system(not it’s ability to go fast in reverse) The human body’s ability to create speed is dependent on it’s ability to slow down and stop as well.

Another way to think of it
— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) October 5, 2021

That’s when a third-party tweeter entered the fray, challenging Phil’s theory and questioning his scientific credentials. As any good scientist would do, Phil clapped back with a footnote, referencing the studies where he got his information, and closing with, “I tend to only spew facts.”

In the mid 80’s Dr Coop Derenne and Tom House published the first studies on this.

Swinging a club fast AND safely (without overextending the facet joints)requires strong deceleration. Lots more but 🤷‍♂️
— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) October 5, 2021

That’s when well-respected golf biomechanist Dr. Sasho Mackenzie offered up his own explanation.

I don’t drink enough ☕️ to debate @PhilMickelson, but I do have thoughts on non-dominant swings for speed training. There’s a better way to train decel… if that’s what you’re into. Please watch full vid here https://t.co/94Rdux9gd3 @TheStackSystem @LukeKerrDineen @peterjkostis pic.twitter.com/aQncvZbKVI
— Sasho MacKenzie (@SashoMacKenzie) October 6, 2021

Whether or not there’s a golf lesson to be learned here is unclear, though Mickelson, who is a natural righty but plays golf lefty, is clearly a supporter of non-dominant swing training.

The Twitter takeaway is clearer: when faced with a roving Mickelson in your replies, tread carefully.

Peter Kostis was always one to tell it like it is during his 30-year golf broadcast career. That hasn’t changed in his post-TV career. In a tell-all interview with No Laying Up, Kostis held nothing back regarding the controversial end to his career as an on-course announcer for CBS, particularly the role he says the PGA Tour had in CBS not re-upping his contract.

Kostis — along with fellow CBS mainstay Gary McCord — were informed in October their contracts with the network would not be renewed. Kostis believes the decision was largely motivated by pressure from the Tour.

“The Tour wants more control over what’s being said,” Kostis said. “I think they want more cheerleaders on the telecast.”

Kostis alluded to a winner’s interview he conducted with an unidentified Tour rookie to illustrate the Tour’s influence on broadcasts. He congratulated the player and asked his thoughts knowing he had a spot in the Masters in addition to his two-year Tour exemption. Kostis said CBS executives called him following the tournament — after Tour commissioner Jay Monahan had called CBS to complain about Kostis’ line of questioning — and was reprimanded for neglecting to mention the FedEx Cup.

“The commissioner was upset that I didn’t say first off that he had won 500 FedEx Cup points,” Kostis said. “And he didn’t want me talking about majors.”

CBS Sports did not immediately respond to GOLF.com’s request for comment. The PGA Tour had no comment.

Kostis said he continued to ignore the FedEx Cup in his post-round interviews with winners. As the season wore on, he said he was phased out of his role.

Kostis, who is 73, speculated that the Tour also applied pressure on CBS to “get younger” with their golf broadcasters.

“I think the Tour was looking, as I was told, they wanted the announcing crew to get younger so younger players could be able to relate to the announcers and vice versa,” Kostis said. “I don’t agree with that in any way shape or form, but I think that was the initial catalyst for everything.”

There have been few answers for Kostis on the reasons for his dismissal. Kostis claimed he still hasn’t received a straight answer from CBS.

“I asked [CBS Sports chairman] Sean McManus why he was doing it,” Kostis said. “He said, ‘We just feel like things have gotten a bit stale and we want to go in a different direction … He denies it now, but that was the exact quote.”

CBS pushed for Kostis to work through the Waste Management Phoenix Open so they could give him a proper “retirement” send off. Kostis said he declined the offer for a few reasons, one being that he wasn’t retiring, but rather being pushed out.

“I got the feeling that it was more about saving face for them than trying to do something nice for me,” Kostis said.

In an explosive interview appearance on the No Laying Up podcast, former CBS Sports reporter Peter Kostis excoriated Patrick Reed for his December rules-breaking controversy, saying he’s seen multiple instances of Reed committing similar rules violations.

“I’ve seen Patrick Reed improve his lie, up close and personal, four times now,” Kostis said, before explaining one of the situations, which happened in 2016 when Reed won The Barclays at Bethpage Black. “That’s the only time I ever shut [Gary] McCord up. He didn’t know what to say, when I said, ‘Well, the lie that I saw originally wouldn’t have allowed for this shot.’ Cause he put four or five clubs behind the ball, kinda faking whether or not he was going to hit this shot or that shot. By the time he was done, he hit a freaking 3-wood out of there. It was a sand wedge lay-up originally.”

You can hear the on-air exchange between Kostis and McCord following the alleged incident in the video below.

But it wasn’t only at The Barclays that Kostis said he witnessed what he deemed to be questionable behavior from Reed.

“I was in the tower on 16 at [the Farmers Insurance Open in] San Diego, and [Reed] hit it over the green and did the same thing,” Kostis said. “He put three or four clubs behind it, and it was really a treacherous shot and nobody had gotten it close all day long from over there. By the time he was done, I could read ‘Callaway’ on the golf ball from my tower.”

Kostis pointed to two more incidents — another in San Diego and one at the Travelers Championship in Hartford — where he claims to have seen Reed improve his lie. As for the question of whether Reed’s actions were intentional, Kostis stopped short of providing an answer.

“I’m not going to assign intent, all I’m going to tell you is what I saw,” he said.

Reed’s rules fiasco ignited the golf world in December when he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for improving his lie in a waste area at the Hero World Challenge. The ruling came after Golf Channel cameras captured Reed brushing away sand from behind his ball with two practice swings. Reed accepted the penalty and argued his actions were accidental.

“I didn’t feel like it really would have affected my lie. I mean, every time I get in the bunker I’m scared to even get my club close to it, it was that far away, but whenever you do that if it does hit the sand, just like if you’re in a hazard area and you take a practice swing and it brushes grass and the grass breaks, it’s a penalty,” Reed said. “So because of that and after seeing the video, I accept that, and it wasn’t because of any intent, I thought I was far enough away.”

In the months since, many prominent members of the golf world have voiced their opinions on Reed’s penalty. Just this week, Brooks Koepka bluntly offered his assessment of the situation.

“I don’t know what he was doing, building sandcastles in the sand, but you know where your club is,” Koepka said in a SiriusXM interview Monday. “I mean, I took three months off and I can promise you I know if I touched sand. It’s one of those things where you know, if you look at the video obviously he grazes the sand twice and then he still chops down on it.”

But with multiple alleged incidents now involving Reed, does rule-breaking run rampant on Tour?

“No. It’s rare, it’s really, really rare on the PGA Tour; 99.9 percent of the guys play by the rule book,” Kostis said. “It’s been my experience that people who are trying to get away with something think they’re invisible. That nobody’s watching, that they’re so cool doing it that nobody will get it.”

You can listen to Kostis’ complete interview on No Laying Up here, where he also discusses his exit from CBS, golf telecasts and so much more.

In the wake of the revelation that longtime CBS golf broadcasters Peter Kostis and Gary McCord would not have their contracts renewed, Kostis has not spoken publicly about it, other than to offer a statement that expressed his thanks to the many people he worked alongside over the course of his near-30 year career.

But on Wednesday, ScoreGolf’s Rick Young published an interview he conducted with Kostis in the wake of Kostis’ CBS dismissal, and, Kostis opened up about the disappointment he’s feeling with the network, as well as the reasons he believes are behind his firing.

Like McCord, Kostis said would have liked to have the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to fans and colleagues. “I’m surprised Gary and I didn’t get the same loyalty other announcers have received who have worked for CBS for a long time,” Kostis told Young. “That’s my biggest surprise in this whole thing. I wasn’t sure if I was going to work beyond this current television contract (2021) but it would have been nice to have a year to go out and say goodbye to fans, say goodbye to sponsors, friends we’ve met in different locations. I thought it was a little bit disrespectful.”

As to the reasoning behind the network’s personnel changes, Kostis said he can only speculate, and hasn’t been given any specifics. “All we’ve really heard is, ‘We think it’s time, we need a change, things were stale,’” Kostis said. “What was stale? ‘Well, the telecasts.’ Why is this the time now? ‘Well, it just is.’ They haven’t really given us any answers whatsoever on why we were let go.

“There’s a fine line between familiarity and staleness,” Kostis continued. “What we’ve been hearing over and over from fans since this happened is, ‘You guys are the voices of my weekends watching golf and we’ve grown to love it.’ There’s a familiarity for the viewers with the CBS team. Having said that, I don’t think it was the announcers that were stale. I believe the production has suffered over the last few years. That’s all I’m going to say. I’ll just leave it at that.”

Gary McCord explains why he is upset by how CBS Sports fired him

Kostis also believes that the upcoming advent of gambling on Tour, as well as the impending expiration of the Tour’s broadcast and television rights (currently held by CBS and NBC) in 2021 played a role in his firing.

“The timing and the reason for mine and Gary’s departure are the ongoing negotiations with a new television contract,” Kostis said. “That’s involved here. I don’t know how exactly or what it could be but I do believe the next television contract is going to be radically different. I don’t have any basis for saying that other than my gut instinct. I do know the tour is gearing up to be able to handle gambling. I think it’s one of the ways they’re hoping to grow their fan base with younger people. It’s a question you’d have to ask [PGA Tour Commissioner] Jay Monahan I guess but everything I’ve seen in interviews and read points to gambling playing a big role in this next round of (television) negotiations.”

On Tuesday, it was revealed that 21-time Tour winner and former Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III would be joining CBS as a full-time analyst. A second replacement has not yet been announced.

Though Young’s interview makes it clear that Kostis is disappointed he won’t be covering the Tour on a week-to-week basis anymore, there is a silver lining: Kostis now has the time to write a book.

“It’s going to be swing and golf instruction,” Kostis explained. “But I am going to intertwine 30 years of stories from inside-the-ropes, talk about my 29 years at the Masters, times with Tiger (Woods), and my previous life with Sam Snead and some of the great people I’ve been around. Hopefully I can mesh those stories with my philosophies on instruction.”

Love, 55, is a 21-time winner on the PGA Tour and was 1-1 as a Ryder Cup captain. He also played in six Ryder Cups and six Presidents Cups. Love, who has lifetime status on the PGA Tour, played in nine Tour events in 2019 (making five cuts) and made six Champions Tour starts.

“I have long considered CBS Sports the gold standard in golf coverage,” Love said in the release. “Whether playing or coaching, I have always loved the team aspect of golf, and I am thrilled to now be a member of the best team in television. My playing days are not totally over, as I will play select events, but my focus now shifts to broadcasting. I have been fortunate to spend a lot of time with the men and women of CBS Sports, and I look forward to getting started in January.”

Gary McCord and Peter Kostis, two stalwarts of CBS’ golf coverage, won’t be returning in 2020.

Kostis and McCord both faced expiring contracts that will not be renewed.

A CBS spokesman released a statement confirming the news, saying “Gary and Peter have been an important part of our golf coverage for three decades. They were both outstanding teammates and we thank them for their significant contributions through the years.” Golfweek’s Geoff Shackelford first reported the news.

McCord first joined CBS Sports in 1986 as an analyst following his 13-year career on Tour and was well known for his colorful commentary alongside fellow CBS broadcaster David Feherty. Kostis had been with CBS since 1992 as an on-course reporter. Over the years, he became known for breaking down players’ swings in slow motion. In remarks to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, Kostis revealed the decision was made by CBS.

Kostis also provided a statement, saying “It is hard to believe it has been 30 years since the first time I walked a golf course with a microphone…offering me a front-row seat for some of the greatest moments in golf. I have been thinking quite a bit about requesting a reduced travel schedule, but CBS made my decision easier when they elected not to exercise the two-year option on my contract.”

This doesn’t mean we’ve seen the end of Kostis. In his statement, he also revealed some vague plans for what lies ahead.

“As I look to my future, it will most definitely include going back to my teaching roots, completely unfiltered, in some form or fashion (maybe a book) and I’m really excited about that!” he said. “There are numerous new opportunities for covering golf that are very interesting.”

CBS Sports’ next broadcast is the January 2020 Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The network’s contract with the PGA Tour is set to end in 2021. CBS, among other companies, is currently bidding for future media rights.

Every week GOLF senior writer Michael Bamberger identifies — and ranks — the absolute, undeniably, very best things in golf right now.

7. Best Stretch of Regular Tour Events

We’re in it right now: San Diego, Phoenix, Los Angeles. They’ve been around forever, they serve their communities, they give those of us trapped in deep freezes an escape through the magic of TV (or some other screened device). The grandest of that trio is of course L.A., because of Hogan, Riviera, Fred, even Tiger’s odd futility there. The loudest, the most modern, is not a subject for debate. But the best of them is the one that just passed, Torrey Pines — the Farmers Insurance Open on your PGA Tour schedule. That’s because it is played on two public courses, and public golf is where it’s at. (Yes, that sentence ends in a preposition. Deal with it, Mr. Di Sibio.) Public courses on an ocean and bathed (this year) in sunshine. A tournament with Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth in the field but also Dylan Frittelli and Joel Dahmen and Sam Burns. A blimp, giving you the course and the fellas on it, the cliffs, the beach below. And, come dusk, as if The Beach Boys were still selling hits on AM radio, a beach bonfire, kids around it, a fireball sunset, David Bowie singing “Heroes” via YouTube on an iPhone, rocking out in a $10,000 suit, in a stop-time world below the course and beyond the cutline and the enduring mystery of reading poa grain.

6. Best Untapped Source

We in the golf typing trade all have our go-to guys. Ideally, you have sources in their 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s and 30s. But you really need to have a group in their 20s, too. Here’s a new one, for this reporter: Dylan Frittelli, top-100 in the world, South African of Italian ancestry who graduated from the University of Texas, good talker, whip-smart. Brings to mind Geoff Ogilvy, if that means anything to you.

5. Best Schlepper on Tour

Has to be that Peter Kostis. The Waste Management Open (aka Phoenix) is an NBC week (and Saturday will be Johnny Miller’s finale). But San Diego and L.A. (Genesis) are CBS events, so you got and will get your fill of Pete’s Konica-Minolta Bizhub Swingvision analysis. He lives and teaches in Scottsdale, outside Phoenix, by the way. He’s 71, he’s been doing it for so long it’s easy to take his whole thing for granted, but the fact is he’s one of the most insightful swing analysts in the game (per Davis Love III and others). Dude is on the ground. He was up and down the hilly South Course at Torrey last week, ear pieces in his left and right, a knapsack on his back with multiple wires coming out of it, an antenna attached to his cap, big cellphone and a yardage book in the back-right pocket of his 100 percent polyester pants, microphone in hand and his famous monitor dangling off his belly like he’s a new mom in Berlin carrying the blessed child in a BabyBjorn product. He gets that microphone right on his lips and says things like, “Look at this spine angle!” We hear it. We see it. Behind it all, there’s Pete, his Fitbit counting every step.

4. Best Flagstick Observations, Borrowed and Otherwise

I. Way better for the spectator, on the long putts.

II. When the flagstick is in when a putt falls, it really doesn’t seem like golf, because the game is about hitting the ball into a hole, not a hole stuffed with something. Yes, in an earlier time, there was no penalty for leaving the flagstick in, but that was decades ago. There were no flagsticks in the rabbit holes. Golf has been basketball with the rim only, no backboard. The flagstick is a backboard.

III. Flagstick in is fine for us, and many of us play that way. The elite game and the Sunday-morning game are different, and always have been. When Dylan Frittelli says he shot 72, you know he took 72 swipes. When we shoot 82, how did we play out-of-bounds? How did we play gimmes? How did we play mulligans?

IV. No science here, but it seems like it’s harder to get the ball to the hole on long putts with the flagstick in.

V. It is ridiculous to say the game’s “science” proves that it is better to have the flagstick in. What are the dimensions of the flagstick? What is its composition? How is it fitting in the cup? Is there wind? What is the mindset of the golfer over the ball? There are too many variables to make a blanket statement.

VI. When they putt on TV with the flagstick in, it makes the elite game look more ordinary.

Adam Scott has been committed to putting with the flag in this year.

3. Best Tom Weiskopf Observation of the New Flagstick Rule, Plus Other Tidbits

“I like it. If everybody did it, there would be so much less foot traffic around the hole.” Tom Weiskopf won the San Diego stop in its first year, 1968, at Torrey Pines, and he revamped the North Course in 2016. He didn’t defend his title in ’69. “I was in the Army Reserves, at Basic Training” he told me the other day, by phone. The players were making low scores on Thursday and Friday and it wasn’t bothering Tom Weiskopf one bit. “Perfect green, little wind, why shouldn’t they?” he said. A good attitude. He remains surprised that he and his partners got the job, to renovate the North Course, over local boy Phil Mickelson. “Usually, the PGA Tour wants that local Tour player doing it, so I don’t know what happened there, because that local Tour player knows the course best. I saw Phil and he said, ‘Good job with the course,’ so that was nice.”

2. Best Wedge Stamp

This week at the Waste Management Open: Ryan Palmer, on the back of his Vokey sand wedge: “How Bout Them Cowboys.” Super Bowl LIII kickoff time: Sunday, 6:30 p.m., Eastern time, Rams-Patriots, a half-hour after the Phoenix event is scheduled to conclude. Ryan Palmer’s wait for next year began in the second week of the playoffs.

1. Best Place to Spot World No. 1 this week

Justin Rose is playing this week at a new European tour event officially called “The Saudi International powered by SBIA,” held at the at the Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia. Also playing there this week are Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. They can do as they please. I won’t be watching. Now is always a good time to play the old O’Jays anthem, “For the Love of Money.”

Does your equipment need an update this spring? If you suffer from any of these five common performance ailments, it may indicate that your clubs—not your swing—are hurting your game.

PROBLEM: Inconsistent ballstriking, off-center hits

SOLUTION: Shorter shaft lengths

Club lofts and lengths have changed a lot in recent years. Drivers used to be 43 inches long. Now industry standards have evolved to a minimum of 45 or 46 inches. While longer club length can mean more distance, this makes it harder for you to find the center of the clubface. Shorter clubs create more shots that hit the sweet spot, which in turn helps you knock it farther. Look at Sergio Garcia: He uses a 43-inch shaft, and he possesses length and accuracy off the tee.

PROBLEM: Frequent pull hooks

SOLUTION: Flatter lie angle

Manufacturers want to help eliminate slices by making lie angles more upright. Sounds good, but when lie angles are too upright, players end up gripping the handle of the club more in the palm; this creates less of an angle between your arm hang and your shaft angle, and that can impact your ability to turn. The result? Pull hooks. So make sure to verify that your lie angles fit your swing. You might see a great benefit—instantly.

PROBLEM: You struggle to get the ball in the air

SOLUTION: More loft

I have a hard-and-fast rule with all of my Tour players: Never put a club in your bag if you feel like you have to help it get the ball into the air. Most recreational players equate less loft with more distance, but they don’t have enough ball speed and backspin to pull it off, which is why they need more loft. A 9-degree driver won’t go farther than a 12-degree driver if you don’t generate the appropriate ball speed and backspin. You need to find a loft that lets you easily and comfortably get the ball airborne. Also, make sure your fairway woods have plenty of loft. A 3-wood should be 15 or 16 degrees.

PROBLEM: Your tempo is erratic

SOLUTION: Heavier clubs

Research tells us that lighter clubs can be swung faster, which creates more distance. This may be true on a swing machine like Iron Byron, but actual players need to feel the swing’s tempo. If there’s not enough mass in the club, you tend to lose rhythm and tempo because it’s hard to feel the club’s weight throughout the swing. There’s a reason why we admire the consistency and tempo of Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan. Decades ago, clubmakers had only heavy materials at their disposal, which let players of that era maintain their swing rhythm. Clubs that are excessively light promote a quick, jerky motion—and a quick swing doesn’t work for anyone.

PROBLEM: Inconsistent hand action and a worn glove heel

SOLUTION: Bigger grips

I estimate that 75 percent of everyday players use grips that are too small, which makes the club twist in their hands. A twisting club makes you virtually strangle the handle, and this increased tension eliminates hand action. Hello, clunky contact. A larger grip, on the other hand, helps you relax your hands. The right-size grip lets you hold the club more lightly with less tension. This increases your sense of hand feel—not to mention your ability to make crisp, consistent contact.

KOSTIS TWITTER TIP: Save more shots

I look forward to seeing how the top 50 players in the world stack up against each other this month at Doral at the WGC-Cadillac Championship. The short game will be key, and that’s also true with your game—especially if you’ve taken a winter golf break. To scrape off the rust, try this greenside drill: Take 10 balls and see how many you can get up and down from different areas. Remember, the best pros scramble for par about eight times out of 10. How does your game compare?
