Of the gizmos and gear that revolutionized the game, there are sexier-looking things than the original golf rangefinder. But, for sure, it opened our eyes.

Let us tell you how things were back in the day.

How far to the pin? Try wandering the fairway looking for a damn yardage marker. Or do some math — the yardage book says it’s 173 from the back edge of that bunker … or maybe it’s that other bunker? Or just eyeball it. Wait, you don’t know what eyeballing is?

A Scot invented the first rangefinder back in the late 18th century. The shocker: It was used to survey canals, not golf courses. Welcome to I Tried It, a GOLF.com series about golf items — apparel, gear, accessories, etc. — that we’ve recently taken out for a spin. We’re here to give our honest, no-frills takes on the latest and greatest golf or golf-adjacent items. So, scroll down to read about what we love about golf’s newest (or new to us) products.

It took me a while to board the golf speaker bandwagon, but as anyone who uses one knows, once you start, there’s no going back.

My house is currently filled with multiple portable Bluetooth speakers. I have one that doubles as a tumbler, a standard “house speaker” and even one that my kids can connect to a microphone for impromptu karaoke performances. Do I really need another one? The answer is yes.

The reason? Because the Bushnell Wingman Mini isn’t just a speaker — it’s also a distance-measuring device that can audibly deliver distances when you’re connected to the Bushnell app.

The audible distance call-out isn’t something I thought I would use much but the truth is, it’s nice to not have to pull out your phone in between shots. Instead, you can just push the “B” button on the speaker to hear accurate front, center and back of green distances straight from the app. If there’s a penalty area in the way, like a water hazard, the Wingman Mini will report the carry distances for those obstacles too.

The Bushnell app also deserves a special shout-out. There are more than 38,000 courses worldwide in its library, nearby courses will populate automatically once the app is opened. While using the app, you can view the entire hole layout and explore intermediate distance measurements to layup points, as well as track and store your rounds and statistics. In short, it’s a useful tool with or without the speaker.

Some may think of a portable speaker as just another accessory they have to remember to bring — and charge! — for every round. Bushnell makes the bringing part easy with a simple clip. Walkers will appreciate the ability to attach the speaker directly to a golf bag, while riders can utilize Bushnell’s “BITE” magnetic mount to attach the speaker to the cart.

And on the battery front, it’s true, it must be re-charged, but the Wingman Mini will last for 36 holes — up to 10 hours — before needing a boost. Another fun option to consider: you can combine two Wingman Minis to create a simultaneous surround-sound effect — something that’s sure to delight your playing partners. The speaker itself is durable and fully waterproof, and you can even incorporate first tee introductions and custom soundbites into the Wingman Mini’s repertoire.

There are tons of products available on the PGA Tour to players, and it’s the job of a company’s Tour representative to get their products in a player’s bags.

There are obvious ones like golf clubs, shoes and clothes, but there are less obvious ones like hats and headcovers. But perhaps one of the most dominant companies is one that sells a product Tour pros can’t use during competition, most of the time.

Bushnell Golf dominates PGA Tour laser rangefinder usage, with 98.6 percent of pros using them in practice rounds, according to Darrell Survey. Bushnell has an impressive share of usage despite pros being unable to use rangefinders during competitions, except for a short trial last season and the PGA Championship.

Accessories

On this week’s episode of GOLF’s Fully Equipped, independent Tour rep Charles Woodward, who reps seven different companies on the PGA Tour, including Bushnell, explained why it’s so valuable to the company to have such domination in the space.

“From a marketing standpoint, just seeing our Bushnell case on television, one of the guys carrying it, that’s huge,” Woodward said.

While pros don’t use rangefinders in competition, the case still takes up valuable advertising real estate on their golf bag. And when the rules allow, it’s even better product placement to see an athlete look through a Bushnell rangefinder on TV.

That’s another factor that could really help Bushnell, as they’d get even more exposure if rangefinders are eventually permitted on the PGA Tour.

“I don’t know if we’ve actually come to realize exactly what is going to happen. But for all intents and purposes, players that I’ve talked to feel like that might be something that is going to help,” Woodward said. “If you hit an errant shot and you’re trying to speed up play, well, if you have a rangefinder, you can shoot that yardage right from where you’re at and not have to go find a sprinkler head and run up there and then take your steps and then calculate it.”

Now, instead of your rangefinder giving you a raw number and leaving you guessing, the device takes everything it knows about you and gives you a personalized distance based on playing conditions and how you’re swinging.

I don’t know major championship pressure. I don’t know PGA Tour pressure. Hell, I don’t even know competitive golf pressure.

But I know a pressure unlike anything faced on the back nine at Augusta National or on the final green of the U.S. Open — a pressure powerful enough to strike fear in the heart of even the most seasoned pro golfer. I know packing pressure, and that, dear reader, is why I’m writing you today.

Recently, I packed for five weeks in Europe in a carry-on bag, an exercise in extreme space management I would now compare unfavorably to a frontal lobotomy.

Inevitably, I know what some of you are now thinking: he must not have prepared properly. Wrong. I spent weeks carefully mapping out outfits that matched in multiple ways across my wardrobe, minimizing my total articles of clothing. I carefully curated purchases around clothing made from light and packable fabrics. I made not one but two packing lists. I ditched sweatshirts and bulky clothes in favor of packing cubes and something called the “roll-up method.” And yet I still spent most of the day before the trip shivering over my roller bag in a state of benzodiazepine-resistant terror. Fortunately, I didn’t bother with the medication, as it turned out I needed all the fortitude I could summon to close the zipper.

Now if I can be so bold as to predict your thoughts a second time: Gee, five weeks in Europe and he’s complaining? He must be insufferable. If you’re part of this group, then we can agree on the following truths: 1) You’ve never packed for a trip like this in your life, and 2) I am insufferable.

But why am I regaling you (and not, perhaps, a licensed clinician) on this experience? Five years ago, as a doe-eyed boy fresh out of college, I received a black Patagonia backpack as a gift. Someone told me I’d never buy another backpack for the rest of my life.

Turns out, they might have been right. Here I should admit an unfortunate truth: I did not pack exclusively a carry-on.

For the first two weeks of my grand Euro trip (in Scotland), I traveled along with my golf clubs to test my mettle on a handful of the best Linksland courses. This offered all manner of bag-expanding options for those first two weeks, including (but not limited to) stuffing an unfortunate number of jackets and pants in my golf bag before it was to be shipped back across the pond.

Below, in short order, are some of the best items that were in that bag.

Six months ago, I landed in Australia for the golf trip of a lifetime. I made it 50 yards out of the rental car when I realized a devastating problem: the golf courses, like everything else, were measured in meters.
