Bryson DeChambeau is a man of numbers. Many of them. Ballspeed, swing speed, driving distance, strokes gained, shaft length, degrees of loft. He hasn’t just been bestowed with the title of “Mad Scientist,” he’s earned it.

But now it’s time to put that ability to a different kind of test. A test fit for the modern athlete, in a modern sports world. A test of his capacities not only as a superstar golfer and major champion, but of his capacities as — you guessed it — a sports gambler.

At a recent cover shoot for GOLF Magazine, Bryson broke down his list of personal over/unders for the 2021 season, and the answers might surprise you.

Bryson DeChambeau 2021 Over/Unders

Pounds gained this year: 8.5

“Gained this year? That’s actually a good number you set it at. I’ve already lost weight, so it might be tough to get more. I’m going to take the under on that.”

Protein shakes consumed: 500

“Oh man, it’ll be over that, for sure. It’ll be over that. It’ll be probably about three a day.”

Average ballspeed this year: 190 mph

“Over.”

Twitch streams: 7.5

“Over.”

Drivers broken in competition: .5

“I hope over.”

Non-tournament 18-hole rounds played: 3.5

“Ha, under. For sure, under on that.”

Drives longer than 415 yards: 1

“Yes. Over. It’ll be over.”

Bryson DeChambeau enters the Players Championship with more momentum than anyone. The reigning U.S. Open champ won at Bay Hill last week and is the second-favorite in DraftKings’ odds (behind only Dustin Johnson) to walk away with a victory at TPC Sawgrass.

All eyes will be on Bryson, and best thing that happens anytime DeChambeau is in contention is that we’re usually treated to some kind of entertaining moment that’s uniquely him (like we saw last week). But he’s proved to be entertaining off the course, too.

So, in the name of good old-fashioned fun at our recent cover shoot with Bryson, we showed our Playing Editor 10 different photos and asked what he was thinking during each of these moments.

BRADENTON, Fla. — The last time Bryson DeChambeau was on the driving range at Concession Golf Club, he was filled with nervous energy. It was the 2015 NCAA Championships and DeChambeau, SMU’s eccentric ace, had posted the individual clubhouse lead at eight-under 280. Then he waited in agony as Washington’s C.T. Pan tried to track him down.

“I remember being on the practice range and when I heard the crowd go “Ohhh,” because [Pan’s putt] lipped out or whatever,” DeChambeau remembered ahead of this week’s WGC-Workday. “The team ran over and just dumped water on me because they knew I had won. That’s my fondest memory right there.”

That was six years ago. Forty pounds ago. Twenty million dollars and seven PGA Tour titles and one major championship ago. And now he’s back, marveling at how far he’s come. Because before he became an NCAA champion, DeChambeau had no idea that all of this was in his future.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to be playing golf for the rest of my life before the NCAAs,” he said. “I was really good and I would have tried to play on Tour, but a lot of things got expedited when I won the NCAAs and the U.S. Amateur [later that year].”

His return to the site of a former triumph is a chance to reflect. DeChambeau used words like “blessed,” “pleased,” and “appreciative.” The on-course accomplishments speak for themselves. The way he’s shifted the mentality of so many pros adds another fascinating layer to his already-layered pro career.

Back then, DeChambeau weighed 195 pounds. He hit it plenty far, but that meant hovering around 170 mph of ball speed with his driver. Now? He’s 230 pounds, a behemoth for the PGA Tour. He easily reaches 200 mph of ball speed. He frequently cites long-drive Kyle Berkshire as a trusted advisor. He’s the reigning U.S. Open champion.

In turn, he’s playing a decidedly different golf course this week than he was in 2015. It plays faster and shorter, he says. Where he needed driver then, now he can use 4-iron. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the game is any easier.

DeChambeau opened his week with five-over 77 on Thursday. He made six bogeys and a triple. He found bunkers, trees, water, bushes, swamps. Golf is a humbling game. Just because you’re better than you were six years ago doesn’t mean you’re better every day. It doesn’t mean that everything is simpler.

As he begins his 2021 season in earnest, DeChambeau has already realized there are parts of his game he needs to dial in to compete at some of the Tour’s more exacting courses. That means dialing back driver from time to time. It’s the reason he’s cut back from 245 pounds to 230, to keep up his energy over four rounds. Being long off the tee helps — but weeks like this, harnessing that length is paramount to survival. Matthew Fitzpatrick and Webb Simpson, two poster boys of patience, beat DeChambeau by 11 on Thursday.

As a lifelong scholar of the game, that’s something DeChambeau can appreciate. Even on familiar turf, there’s plenty more to learn. And this week’s course is a particular brutish teacher.

“If you’re not hitting it well and straight off the tee, it’s ‘The Concussion’ for a reason,” he said.

Some days more than others.

But behind all of his outward success is years of hard work, both on and off the course.

Before his recent physical transformation, DeChambeau made a name for himself with his super-analytical approach to the game. His extensive research into how to best maximize his talents on the golf course coupled with his commitment to becoming the game’s longest bomber have earned DeChambeau a reputation as one of the game’s hardest workers. But where did that drive and strong work ethic come from?

“It was a quote from [Ben] Hogan that I got early in my teens,” DeChambeau said in an interview with GOLF.com. “[Hogan] said, ‘Every day that you’re not working is another day somebody else is getting better than you.’ And I took that to heart. Ever since then, I’ve always worked every single day as hard as I possibly can.”

For DeChambeau, that willingness to dig deep continues even when things are going well. During the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, which DeChambeau won by a whopping six shots, he memorably practiced into the night after finishing the third round — the only player remaining on the range, under the lights.

“If there’s sun, sunlight out, why not work as hard as possible? Why not try and figure something out that’s going to allow you to be more repeatable the next day?” DeChambeau said of his propensity to grind. “If it’s there, if you have the opportunity to hit golf balls and get better, or if you have the opportunity to go on your computer and figure out more for your business or whatever you’re trying to do and accomplish in life, why not do it?

“There obviously is a time for family, for rest, and for me I always say resting is when I’m sleeping. And so if you can take that to heart and work as hard as you possibly can, you only have so many seconds in the day, and you want to utilize every single second to try and accomplish your goals. Why not do it?”

Why not, indeed.

Though he’s only 27, Bryson DeChambeau has been a standout for what seems like a very long time. His pre-PGA-Tour credentials are well known: wins at both the 2015 NCAA Championship and U.S. Amateur propelled him into rarefied air, making him only the fifth golfer in history to achieve such a feat in the same year.

Since then, DeChambeau has accumulated seven PGA Tour wins, including the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, and amassed more than $21 million in earnings on the course alone. Not only has his physical transformation given him a reputation as one of the hardest workers on Tour, but his analytical mind and willingness to think outside the box has made him a revolutionary figure when it comes to the way both players and manufacturers view the game and its equipment.

For DeChambeau, his success both on and off the course has surpassed even his own childhood dreams. So given what he knows now, what advice would DeChambeau give his 10-year-old self?

“I would tell him to be patient,” DeChambeau told GOLF.com. “I was always someone that wanted it now, and it had to be done today. There’s something in life — it’s difficult to explain, but for me, as time has gone on, I realized patience is a virtue, because it makes you realize and understand what’s going on.

“[Patience] helps you come up with a better game plan for the future. When you’re a little more patient and thinking about the whole situation as much as possible, rather than just thinking what you think is right — I need it now. That’s what I would tell him. I’d say just be patient and appreciate what comes your way.”

If patience didn’t come easily to young Bryson, there are two qualities that have remained steadfast through the years: his dedication and competitive spirit.

“No matter what the situation was, whether it was volleyball, basketball, or trying to beat my brother in roller-hockey when he was 12 years older than me, there was always a competitive nature to it,” he said. “My dad pushed me a lot — in a good way. He never forced me to do anything. He just said, if you’re going to do something, give it your all. And he made sure that I gave it my all. And that’s something I still have today.”

Good advice, for any age.

Every golfer wishes they could add 10 more yards of distance off the tee. It’s true from weekend warriors all the way up the ranks of the PGA Tour. If you play golf, increasing distance off the tee is always top of mind.

With advanced analytics taking over the game, players have been enlightened to the importance of distance. The old adage “drive for show, putt for dough” is starting to become an archaic saying. Sure, putting is important, but if you can’t keep up off the tee with your competition, you are at a distinct disadvantage.

Bryson DeChambeau brought the pursuit for distance to the mainstream over the past several years, bulking up with a carefully calculated regimen that has seen him balloon in size. The gains have been impressive, and other players on Tour have taken note — especially since his win at last year’s U.S. Open.

And while it might appear that his gains have been solely the product of guzzling protein shakes and hitting the gym more frequently, there’s another secret to his success — one that it’s easy for you, too, to employ.

“Anything that helps you train for speed is a worthy device,” DeChambeau told GOLF.com. “But the best one is your desire.”

What he means is, if you want to add speed to your swing, step 1 is wanting it, and then working toward that goal. Hitting the gym wouldn’t hurt, but that extra muscle mass isn’t the only thing that will have you hitting bombs.

“Say you’re in a speed session and you’re getting to the 15th or 20th ball hitting really hard, then all of a sudden, you see your numbers drop,” DeChambeau told GOLF.com. “That’s when most people stop. Don’t! Convince yourself to continue swinging — I’m talking 50, 60, 70 balls. Push your body’s limits. Get your endurance level up so that you can swing that way at any point in time. We all have the ability to gain five miles an hour.”

If you can push yourself past the point where you think you’ve hit your ceiling, then you’ll begin to see gains. So next time you’re speed training, and you start to get discouraged, take a deep breath, regroup and keep pushing.

Your desire could be the most effective training aid you didn’t know you had.
