The Old Course at St. Andrews was the favorite of Alister MacKenzie and Bob Jones, and it was very much in front of mind when they built Augusta National. Equally strong admirers of St. Andrews are the design team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. The irony is that, arguably, their best opportunity to capture the allure of such rippling land movement didn’t come in Tasmania or the Sand Hills of Nebraska but rather in a former landfill eight miles south of Dallas. Like at St. Andrews, the words “option-filled,” “ground game,” “shot variety,” “creativity,” “risk/reward” and “fun” describe Coore-Crenshaw’s Big D beauty Trinity Forest. Each of its 18 holes embodies these descriptors and requires the golfer to constantly think about tee-shot placement, approach risk, trajectory, shot shape and angles.

Its par-4 18th — 452 yards from the member tee, with the Great Trinity Forest guarding the left side — is representative of these asks. The aggressive line is left off the tee. If your ball avoids the left-center fairway bunker, it catches a speed slot, leaving a manageable approach to a green that is fully visible.

From the fairway’s easier-to-hit right side you’ll have a longer approach to a putting surface partially obscured by a pair of deep, protective bunkers 25 yards short of the green. Unless a north wind holds up a high shot and provides a soft landing, the best option for holding the right-to-left-sloped green is often a bouncing, lower-trajectory shot that lands just beyond the bunkers. Definitely a tense moment, but the risk is rewarded with perfect rollout from the tight Zoysia fairway.

Though the putting surface itself is large, its false front and fallaway slopes to the rear make it a vexing target. Poorly struck balls scamper across and off the left side or back. Short grass extends all around the green, but hitting a chip from a tight lie when the match is on the line is not for the faint of heart.

As is the case at St. Andrews, you’ll come to admire the variety of challenges short grass poses, and appreciate how, hole after hole, this Coore-Crenshaw design recognizes and rewards properly flighted, well-struck shots. It’s true that ocean views or dramatic landforms can be captivating, but subtle architecture — the kind that doesn’t scream at you — is often the most enduring. That’s Trinity Forest.

The PGA Tour is moving the AT&T Byron Nelson out of Trinity Forest Golf Club after the 2020 tournament in May, ending a star-crossed three-year run at the Bill Coore-Ben Crenshaw neo-links course south of downtown Dallas

An official announcement is scheduled for Sunday. The Dallas Morning News first reported the news late Saturday.

“I’ve been counting the days that this would happen,” Ryan Palmer, a Texas-born PGA Tour winner who lives in the Dallas suburbs, told GOLF.com.

“I may get in trouble for saying this, but there was no energy, no excitement, and no crowds to watch. We went from the No. 1 Tour event in excitement and charity giving to wherever we are now. This had to happen.”

Many factors contributed to the club’s demise as a Tour site, including unpredictable weather, a lack of shade, infrastructure and off-course hospitality venues, and a dearth of A-list players. All of that hurt the sponsoring Salesmanship Club of Dallas’ ability to raise funds for its charity, the Momentous Institute, which provides education and therapy services for local children and is the sole beneficiary of the event’s net proceeds.

Tyler Dennis, the Tour’s chief of operations, told the Morning News, that the Tour was evaluating other venues that would ensure a “premium fan experience.”

While the Tour has not yet selected a new North Texas site for 2021, the early favorite is a return to the TPC-Four Seasons Resort, which successfully played host to the event for 35 years.

“We have never shut that door on the relationship,” said Maura Allen Gast, executive director of the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau, which has been heavily involved in the event during its years in Dallas.

“We have said from the beginning we want what is best for the kids at the Momentous Institute and if that is the case we are happy,” Gast said.

Palmer supports the idea of returning the event to the recently renovated Las Calinas course at the TPC-Four Seasons.

“Just move it back to the Four Seasons and leave it there,” he said. “To look at the crowds and the people there, I wish I had a picture of the people there in our last year compared to Trinity Forest.”

The PGA of America is building two championship golf courses with architects Gil Hanse and Beau Welling in Frisco, just north of Dallas, but they will not be ready until at least 2022.

“You know this doesn’t happen quickly, but it was finalized very recently,” a longtime Salesmanship Club member told GOLF.com.

An AT&T spokesman told the Morning News that the company’s “commitment to the community and tournament continues today,” but also that its initial title sponsorship deal expires after the 2021 tournament.

AT&T is the largest sponsor in dollars on the PGA Tour with title sponsorships at the Byron Nelson and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, plus a major TV sponsorship at the Masters in April.

The company used its considerable corporate leverage with the Tour to get the tournament moved away from the Four Seasons to Trinity Forest, a treeless design that opened in 2014 on City of Dallas land that was a former toxic landfill.

At the time Dallas mayor Mike Rawlins touted the project as a unique public-private partnership, but the name Tour players never came out, and the fans didn’t, either. The Salesmanship Club reported charitable donations dropped by more than half from what the Four Seasons event generated, down to less than $3 million a year.

It would seem that no lead is safe on the PGA Tour these days. After firing a sizzling 61 on Friday (which tied the course record), Sung Kung was leading by four shots heading into Round 3. But his competitors continued the birdie barrage, especially Matt Every, who made the most significant statement thus far, going eagle-par-par-birdie-birdie-birdie (five under par) in his opening six holes, cutting Kang’s lead to a single shot. By the time he reached the ninth hole, Every was leading by one at 18 under par overall, after Kang bogeyed the par-3 8th.

Every has two career victories on the PGA Tour. His best finish this year is T3 at the Zurich Classic.

Tyler Duncan, a 29-year-old pro in his second full year on the PGA Tour, is having a good week in Dallas. After firing two solid opening rounds of 64-66 at the AT&T Byron Nelson, he’s tied for second at 12 under par overall — four shots behind Sung Kang’s lead.

But on Friday, things nearly took an unfortunate turn. According to the PGA Tour, Duncan missed the green on the par-4 13th hole at Trinity Forest. His errant approach went right of the green, taking a bounce before hitting a spectator and settling about 33 yards away from the hole. Unbeknownst to Duncan, the spectator was his wife, Maria. In fact, he didn’t discover it was her until after he had completed his round.

Somewhat remarkably, Friday was not the first time Duncan’s wife had been struck by a golf ball.

“Not long after we started dating, she actually got hit in the head by another ball, a random ball from the driving range,” Duncan said. “She’s dodged two hits to the head. I’m sure most people can’t say that.” Duncan and his wife were married in 2017.

Duncan has yet to win a tournament on the PGA Tour, but he had two top-10 finishes last season. This year, his best finish is T22 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He’s in good position now to to improve upon that stat this week.

Picture the rolling terrain and molded green complexes of a Pinehurst No. 2 dropped in the middle of Dallas’s south side, and you have Trinity Forest.

OPTIONS ABOUND at Trinity Forest, with the 315-yard par-4 fifth leading the charge. It looks like a piece of cake, but just because you can drive it pin-high doesn’t mean you’re entitled to birdie.

THE TEE SHOT makes the rare ask that you control your driver distance. You must fly the bunker situated 35 yards short of the green, but the ideal shot should barely carry that hazard, then trundle to the green’s front-right edge. Don’t go long; that’s where things get steep.

AROUND THE GREEN is where the intrigue (and treachery) becomes a reality: The narrow, crowned putting surface slopes away from its center in every direction. Last year, Jordan Spieth drove the green with his tee shot, then proceeded to hit his lag putt off the back—and he’s a member!

From off the green, Coore and Crenshaw are obsessed with options that create uncertainty; whichever you choose—putt, bump-and-run or fancy flop shot—commit fully.

THE LESSON here is to take what the course gives you. If you hit the perfect tee shot, go collect your birdie. If you go long or left off the box, don’t get too cute with the ensuing chip—the ball could end up back at your feet. Play to the middle of the green, two-putt for your par and live to fight another hole.

With the PGA Championship just a week away, the Tour heads to Dallas this week for the AT&T Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest Golf Club. It’s the Tour’s third of four events in the Lone Star State this year.

Brooks Koepka, who finished as the runner-up at this event in 2016, is the betting favorite to win this week with 13/2 odds. Koepka is looking for his first win on Tour since coming out on top at the CJ Cup this past October. His most recent appearance on Tour resulted in a T22 finish at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last month. The Byron Nelson will serve as the three-time major champion’s final tuneup before he heads to Bethpage Black next week to try and defend his PGA Championship title.

The defending champion Aaron Wise enters with 20/1 odds to win this week at Trinity Forest. The defending PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has not won since his 23-under performance at the AT&T Byron Nelson last spring. Wise finished tied for 18th at this past week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

Dallas-native Jordan Spieth, who is still looking for his first victory since the 2017 Open Championship, has 18/1 odds to win this week at Trinity Forest. Spieth finished T54 at the RBC Heritage last month.

The final verdict? Trinity Forest was a success.

The Coore & Crenshaw course in south Dallas made its much-heralded PGA Tour debut for last week’s AT&T Byron Nelson and players and spectators were promised a distinctly different experience. The treeless, roughless pseudo-links setup garnered skeptical locker-room whispers as well as some optimism from players who knew the place including Jordan Spieth, Hunter Mahan and Geoff Ogilvy.

“Bill Coore and I were nervous because we deliberately set out to do something different here,” Crenshaw said on the CBS broadcast.

Coming out of the weekend, Aaron Wise and Trinity Forest were both deemed winners, each a Tour rookie with a long, bright future in the game. For his part, Wise enjoyed thinking his way around the course. “It’s tricky,” he said after his round Friday. “But it’s a ton of fun and I like that.”

But what did non-winners think? “I really enjoyed it,” said Keith Mitchell, who finished T3. “There’s a lot of different types or different styles of players that are at the top of the leaderboard. That shows a lot about the golf course. It doesn’t favor any one person. I think it’s a great test. It’s a great strategy for us.”

Mitchell was among those who mounted a charge up the leaderboard on Sunday, when low wind and wet conditions rendered the course extremely scorable. His 63 wasn’t even the best round of the day — that belonged to Branden Grace, who shot 62 to also finish T3. “It was a breath of fresh air playing something different this week instead of the week-in, week-out,” Grace said, adding that he expects the venue to only get better over time. As for the low scores? “Obviously I think we’ve got really lucky with the weather and that’s why the scores were so low. It can bite you if it settles in a little bit in the next couple years.”

As for the local favorite?

“Springtime in Texas this is very rare, to have three days with no wind,” Jordan Spieth said after his Sunday round, adding that he thinks higher winds would have added a layer of uncertainty and limits players’ ability to fire at pins. “I think these will be record scores for a number of years here and it will be somewhere around 12- to 16-under if we get typical Texas spring in the future.”

There was sure to be dissent, of course, mostly off-the-record. Billy Horschel cited hearing “horror stories” in the lead-up to the event, and Matt Kuchar was clearly displeased with the setup on Thursday and Friday. “I probably let my dislike of the golf course affect my performance,” he admitted. Kuchar went on to miss his first cut in 31 starts.

But Spieth insisted that the week was a win for Trinity Forest. “A lot of guys said, ‘It’s grown on me day to day, I really enjoyed it as a change of pace, I had a lot of fun playing this golf course,'” Spieth said. “Those were lines guys were using this week and it shouldn’t be reported any differently. It was an overwhelmingly positive outlook from the players that played.”
