Anyone who tuned in for the Houston Open this past weekend definitely saw the stats, heard the commentary, or both. Maybe they even scrolled through it — there was plenty on Twitter, and all of it amounted to this: Martin Trainer has been struggling for a long time to find good form.

All of it is true, for the record. But taken all together, fans of Trainer thought it was a bit much. You can count me in on that group of fans. I caddied for him at the 2019 3M Open. Yes, a missed cut.

This weekend, all those missed cuts were added up conveniently for the viewer. No cuts made since April. Zero top 25 finishes in the 70 starts since his 2019 victory. A whopping career total of -351 strokes gained. Or rather, 351 strokes lost to the field average. While Trainer knew all this quite well, some of his biggest supporters didn’t quite have it memorized, and they reached out to him throughout the weekend as he held the 36-hole lead and was just one back entering the final round.

“I had a few people text me saying — they didn’t even say what people were saying about how I had missed a million cuts or whatever,” Trainer told us on this week’s Drop Zone Podcast. “But they just seemed aggrieved that they were just disparaging my golfing name.”

Disparaging is a harsh term, but even the biggest Trainer fans had nothing to back it up. Nothing besides his back-to-back 65s to open the tournament. Vegas didn’t believe in him either, with his odds lengthening every time anyone else made a birdie. On Saturday night he was even asked by one media member: “Was there ever a time when you considered not playing?”

Frankly, I was pretty worried that all this talk about his failures would beget another big failure, only now on a much bigger platform. When people remind you constantly “Hey, we haven’t seen this from you in awhile,” it’s difficult to think about anything else but “Yeah, I haven’t done this in awhile.” But somehow, with Trainer, that couldn’t have mattered at all.

“From my standpoint, that stuff doesn’t matter at all,” Trainer said. “I have status this year and I’ve won on Tour before. So my only goal is to get back to a point where I’m playing well and potentially contending.

“This week was a best-case scenario and I played really well and I ended up having a chance. That’s a huge win for me. Just to be up there, have a Top 5 and contend.”

Eyes on the prize can keep the noise to a minimum, that’s for sure. Trainer’s worst round of the week came on Saturday with a grinding 74 that surrendered his lead. But with just one shot between him and the lead, it’s not like he had been bounced from contention. Then on Sunday he found himself in the lead with just six shots to go. Those hundreds of strokes lost to the field couldn’t matter, so they didn’t matter. In the end, Jason Kokrak became a human buzzsaw and birdied four straight on his back nine to take the title. Trainer would have to accept his T5 finish.

The payoff was his biggest check in a long, long time, enough FedEx Cup points to call it a successful fall season and a dinner reservation with butter cake on the way. Trainer talked to us about his entire week in the interview below.

The shot of this Houston Open wasn’t a long drive, though Jason Kokrak, one of the game’s biggest hitters, will be remembered for those. Nor was it a long putt, though Kokrak, also sneaky good with the flat stick, dropped a few of those, too.

No, the winning blow at Memorial Park came off a short iron, the ball went 149 yards, and there was still 120 yards to go.

At that point, Kokrak had birdied three-straight holes on his way to taking a one-shot lead during Sunday’s final round, and he was in line for another after hitting his tee shot on the par-5 15th. Only as he landed his ball in the fairway, mud landed on his ball, and he prudently laid up short of the green.

“This is a smart play at this point, as you’re just unsure what the mud will do to it,” analyst John Wood said on the Golf Channel broadcast. “He’s just going to chip something down the fairway and leave himself a wedge in.”

Four straight birdies. 🐦

Two-shot lead for @JayKokrak. ♠️ pic.twitter.com/aPkGRzhtEg
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) November 14, 2021

From there, Kokrak hit to 5 feet, he birdied again, and he moved his lead to what would be an insurmountable two strokes on his way to a third career PGA Tour victory. The short shot went a long way. Starting the weekend 10 shots out of the lead, Kokrak followed with rounds of four-under 66 and five-under 65 to finish at 10-under and win by two over Kevin Tway and Scottie Scheffler.

To begin Sunday, Kokrak was two back of Scheffler, and at one point early on, five players shared the lead. On the back nine, Martin Trainer, who had begun the week at 2,000-1 to win, led by two, before Kokrak began his birdie binge.

On the 326-yard, par-4 13th, Kokrak hit to 12 feet and rolled in the putt for a three. On the 513-yard, par-4 14th, he hit to 23 feet and rolled in the putt again for a three. On the 115-yard, par-3 15th, he hit his tee shot to 6 feet and rolled in the putt for a two. Then came the birdie four on the 16th.

Tway, after a 68, and Scheffler, after a 69, finished two shots back, and Kramer Hickok ended up three behind. After a spirited run, Trainer tied for fifth with Joel Dahmen.

The big takeaway

Kokrak has now won three times in just over a year, after a long stretch of having never won. Watch out.

The 20 big shots

2021 Houston Open final round preview

We’ve had a rotating cast of recognizable names lurking near the top of the leaderboard through three rounds of play at the 2021 Houston Open, and also some underdogs (Martin Trainer, anyone?). Currently, Scottie Scheffler rests atop the heap at 7 under par, holding a one-stroke lead over the field after a Saturday 69.

The 25-year-old Texas native (and Ryder Cup phenomenon) vaulted himself into contention after a Friday 62 in Houston, helping to rally past a group headlined by Matthew Wolff ahead of him on the leaderboard. To this point in his career, Scheffler has seen an extraordinary amount of success (including top-10 finishes in three of the four majors), and yet, he’s still in search of his first-ever PGA Tour win. A victory on Sunday would give him a fitting win in front of his home state’s crowd.

Further back, Matthew Wolff enters Sunday lurking just one back of Scheffler’s lead. Wolff is looking for his second-career PGA Tour victory, and his first since winning the 3M Open in June 2019, his rookie year. Wolff has been through a roller-coaster few years since that famed first win, but his game is rounding nicely into form after a middle-of-the-night swing revelation resulted in increased consistency.

Stephan Jaeger? He went tee to green in a single shot, rolled in the 22-footer and walked away with an eagle two.

Kevin Tway? He hit a driver out to the left of the green, then chipped into the water to the right of it, marked himself down for a bogey five and afterward side-armed his new ball into the drink, too.

Matthew Wolff? One hole after hitting a driver 324 yards, he hit a pitching wedge off the tee and landed it short of trouble, only to get into it after hitting another wedge short. He finished with a double-bogey six.

All this for a 301-yard, par-4? Believe it. During Saturday’s third round at the Houston Open, the tees were up some 75 yards from previous days on the 17th at Memorial Park, and the fun rose with it.

“That’s why we like it, when they move it up and make them short, drivable par-4s, because a lot happens, not always good,” analyst Curt Byrum said on the Golf Channel broadcast.

“You look at the way it’s played — 3.8 [average strokes],” analyst Trevor Immelman said. “Enticing these players to take it on. It’s a great hole.”

At no point was it maybe more so than when Wolff and Tway reached it.

In front of each was a dogleg that wrapped itself around water to the right, and a few players, such as Jaeger, took it straight over the hazard. Tway, in the lead at the time, was among those who drove it left of the green, and it left him with a delicate 45-yard shot to get on.

Tway chipped it, his ball ran past the hole, and it dribbled into the water. He bogeyed the hole and the closing one, and he’ll start Sunday a stroke out of the lead.

“Oh boy, oh boy,” Immelman said on the broadcast as the ball rolled farther from the hole and closer to the water.

“There you go,” he said when it dove in.

Three groups in front of Tway, and also in the lead at the time, Wolff pulled a pitching wedge from his bag and dropped his tee shot ahead of the dogleg. While prudent, it was also at least a little disappointing. On a risk-reward tee shot, who doesn’t want to see one of golf’s longest hitters give it a go?

“Wind dying down, driver might be a good club for Wolff,” Byrum said before Wolff decided. “It’s down wind, 296 to the front, 301 to the hole. That hole location is in the front, just over the lake that fronts this green. So it’s going to be really interesting to see what Matt Wolff does. Got to be so tempting for him to just try to send a driver straight up in the air.”

“Yeah, must be,” Immelman said. “Particularly with as high as what he can hit it. He’s one of the few players that can land it on and keep it on. And for insurance, if he decides to go for it, because of the build-out over the back of the green there, he’ll be able to know that he can stop the ball if it comes out hot too.”

Wolff then hit his wedge 170 yards. Impressive, but it wasn’t the club that could send it twice that distance.

“Man, I wanted to see him hit driver,” Byrum said on the broadcast.

“Me, too,” Immelman said.

“He’s got all that momentum, and he drives it really good,” Byrum said. “He’s long, he’s accurate, but the decision has been made.”

“I always think back to a lesson Jack Nicklaus gave me,” Immelman said. “He said he always felt like strategy-wise that he needed to know in his mind that he would pull a shot off eight out of 10 times if he was going to go for it. If he didn’t feel like he had that kind of confidence, he would play back to something he knew he could pull off.”

On his second shot, from 132 yards out, Wolff hit wedge again — wedge-wedge on a par-4! — but it dropped about 20 yards short and into the water. Visibly stunned, Wolff even looked at the bottom of his club to confirm that he had hit the right one.

From there, he dropped, pitched on and two-putted for a double-bogey six. He’ll start Sunday a stroke out of the lead.

“Bet he wishes he hit driver now,” Byrum cracked after Wolff finished up the hole.

Did he?

“I just didn’t really see the point in going for it, to be honest,” Wolff said. Marc [Leishman, Wolff’s playing partner] hit after me, but with where that pin was and that back slope, if you were anywhere past pin high, it was going to be a really hard chip. As you saw Marc, he felt like he hit a pretty good chip, and it went 20, 25 feet behind the hole.

“On top of that, you bring in the water if you’re trying to stay short of it, so I just didn’t really see a point of going for it, and on top of that, I hit pitching wedge off the tee, which I almost felt a little — I almost feel like I wouldn’t let myself hit pitching wedge on a par-4, and I knew it was the right club, and I hit sand wedge in. I knew I was going to be able to hit the fairway with a wedge, and I would have another wedge in. Not many times I thought I would be making double with two wedges, but it is what it is and I have to live with whatever happened, but I just didn’t really see a point in going for it.”

What happened on the second shot?

“I knew it was the right club,” Wolff said. “That’s why I’m just so dumbfounded really about how that came up that short. I really didn’t — maybe — I definitely hit the second one a little harder because it came up short, but it was 125 to carry the front or onto the green and 131 to the hole and it was downwind. All week I’ve been hitting my sand wedge — I hit my sand wedge 130, 135 just normal, just cruising it. Gap wedge on the last hole I had 132 and it was a little into the wind and I hit gap wedge and I flew it 140. I definitely knew it wasn’t a gap wedge, and it wasn’t a lob wedge. As you can see, the second shot was good. I just can’t really give you an answer on how that came up that short.”

Will 17 play up during Sunday’s final round? It’s unlikely. But Saturday will give officials at least something to think about.

Much like how 67 players just had to.

Thirty-year-old Martin Trainer is your 36-hole PGA Tour leader, and it’s been a long time since we could say that. After winning the 2019 Puerto Rico Open for his maiden PGA Tour victory, Trainer has fallen on hard times on Tour. He played 21 events in 2020 and missed the cut 19 times. Last year, he missed 23 cuts in 27 starts. He then missed five-straight cuts to start the new season.

But that was then. Now, that lengthy missed-cut streak is over. After opening this Houston Open with back-to-back 65s, Trainer is in first place and in prime position to do the unthinkable and capture his second-career Tour victory.

Because the second round was suspended Friday night and players were forced to complete their rounds Saturday morning, those who made the cut will be grouped in threesomes for Round 3 using split tees. Thanks to his leading score, Trainer will tee off in the final grouping on the front nine at 1 p.m. ET alongside Kevin Tway and Adam Long.

Here’s what you need to know to watch the second round on TV or online.

Previewing Houston Open Round 2

Last year on the PGA Tour was a tough one for Matthew Wolff, featuring a few highlights and plenty of low ones for the young pro amid his adjustment to stardom. But Wolff is already showing signs of a turnaround early in the new season.

Notable groupings for Houston Open Round 2

The opening day of play at this year’s Houston Open was marked by a tightly-packed leaderboard, especially near the top. Matthew Wolff is among the top players in the mix in the early going. Wolff put together a solid two-under 68 on Thursday to start his tournament. That places him just a few shots off the lead after Round 1.

But one of Wolff’s playing partners, Marc Leishman, got the better of the young star. The Australian veteran looked as if he he’d finish his round with the solo lead, but a late bogey at 18 cost him that chance. Still, his opening-round 65 puts him squarely in contention heading into the second round.

On Friday, Wolff and Leishman, along with the third member of their group, Tony Finau (one under), will switch to an afternoon tee time of 1:20 p.m. ET and begin their rounds on the 10th tee.
