Bryson DeChambeau may hit it farther than just about anyone in professional golf and bulk like a weightlifter, but he’s still human, as he proved Sunday at Rich Harvest Farms.

After nearly holing his second shot on the par-4 14th hole (his 13th of the day) during the final round of LIV Golf’s Chicago Invitational, DeChambeau got into a bit of a tangle.

No, this wasn’t an altercation with a member of the gallery, but rather he had trouble clearing the gallery rope left of the fairway.

Take a look at the video below:

Down goes Bryson. (Also, interesting word choice!) pic.twitter.com/YPqrinQYDD
— Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) September 18, 2022

DeChambeau’s approach shot banged the center of the flagstick on the par-4 and settled about eight feet from the hole. When he tried to get up to the green to see the result of the shot, he failed to duck his 6-foot-1 frame below the rope and took what appeared to be a direct shot to the eye.

LIV broadcaster David Feherty put the moment in words only Feherty can (get away with).

“Off with his head!” Feherty exclaimed during the slow-motion replay on the YouTube broadcast.

DeChambeau was visibly shaken, and stood around for few moments trying to gather himself.

It wasn’t enough to deter him from draining his birdie putt, but he fell down the leaderboard afterward with bogeys on 15 and 16.

Even after making his putt, DeChambeau still looked out of sorts, blinking his eyes multiple times as if to indicate his eye was still not right.

As of this writing, DeChambeau was one under on his round and six under for the tournament, five back of leader Cameron Smith.

By now, you have no doubt heard the LIV Golf talking points. They’ve been shared from every podium and in every player statement for months.

The new league is “exciting” and “innovative,” the talking points say, the decision to join was rooted in a desire to “grow golf’s global GDP,” the “lighter schedule” was important for maintaining that ever-so-crucial work-life balance.

LIV’s newest broadcaster David Feherty would like you to know that, in his opinion, those talking points are “bulls—.” There were only a few reasons the golf firebrand had any interest in leaving his role at NBC Sports to join the upstarts, and almost all of them had to do with his bank account.

<iframe title="Spotify Embed: Courtroom Drama!

“Money,” Feherty told The Toledo Blade’s David Briggs at a fundraiser with fellow broadcaster Gary Koch earlier this week. “People don’t talk about it. I hear, ‘Well, it’s to grow the game.’ Bulls—. They paid me a lot of money.”

According to Feherty, there are at least some benefits provided by his move to LIV, but they are personal, not external.

“[LIV is] an opportunity to be myself again,” Feherty said. “It’s become more and more difficult, especially in sports broadcasting, to have any kind of character. Charles Barkley can say pretty much anything he wants, because it’s, ‘Oh, that’s just Charles.’ And it is just Charles. But I have become more and more guarded over the last few years.”

With LIV, Feherty says, he can be his truest self without fear. There is a certain irony in that sentence, given the league’s financial ties to the Saudi government’s Public Investment Fund (and the country’s relevant record on human rights). But in Feherty’s opinion, the controversy surrounding the league’s financiers is overblown.

“You can point to various countries throughout the world,” he said. “I wouldn’t want to behave like that, but wherever golf is, good happens, and I’m hoping this will do the same thing. [LIV] has said its going to donate $100 million to area charities.”

Feherty has long been one of the most popular golf broadcasters in the sport during his over two-decade career in the business. He has worked for NBC Sports since 2015, and before that was an analyst for CBS’ golf coverage.

According to The Post, NBC declined to comment on the departure, and Feherty did not immediately return their message.

Last week, TNT’s Charles Barkley said on The Next Round podcast that he was “gonna 100 percent meet with LIV” to discuss potential opportunities.

“I’m gonna meet with LIV,” Barkley said. “To be always transparent and honest, they called me and asked me if I’d meet with them. I said yes. Nothing’s imminent. I actually don’t know everything they want from me or what they technically want me to do. But you have to always look at every opportunity that’s available.”

The next LIV Golf event is schedule for July 29-31 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

It should come as no surprise, then, that this column has spent a considerable amount of time discussing one David Feherty.
So, when the Hot Mic was granted the opportunity to speak with the man himself at a recent charity event for the Generational Group, we figured the best use of our time with Feherty would be to let him do what he does best. Over the span of a few minutes, we challenged Feherty to share his best stories with us from a career in golf. Below is a collection of some of our favorites from our conversation, including his (hungover) best round ever, and his most embarrassing shot. You can check out the full video above.

(Ed. Note: A special hat tip to GOLF’s Tiffani Lynch, who conducted the interview with Feherty … and managed not to laugh audibly.)

David Feherty’s best round of golf ever:

“It was under a monumental hangover, I’m not proud of that part of it. It was on the eastern coast of Spain, the Catalan Open. I thought that I was going to miss the cut, so I went out with a friend of mine, and we kinda tied one on. Got in around 3/4 in the morning, and noticed I was first on the draw sheet the following morning.”

“I got in the shower and got changed and went back out almost immediately and shot 61. I went from just making the cut to tied for second, so I behaved myself the following evening and then shot 75 the next day. Serves me right.”

His most embarrassing shot:

“I remember the first time I played with Seve. Seve was one of those guys he was a nightmare to play with. He was always jingling his change and moving his feet around. So I moved it over to the part of the tee where I couldn’t see his feet from underneath the bill of cap, and I clean-shanked a four-iron. I’m on my follow through and I’ve just realized that I’ve shanked it. And Seve is right here, just about to hit his shot. And the ball goes right into a tree just short of the 17th green and vanished. So the ball lands on the tee behind us. Seve turns me and says, ‘I’m sorry, you’re away.”

“So that was fairly embarrassing.”

              Getty Images

His best fan interaction as a broadcaster:

“I was working for CBS at the time and I was following Rory McIlroy at the PGA Championship. We’d had a torrential downpour, there was a fan, a big fella, and I’m walking past him and his feet went out from underneath him. He slid the whole way down the bank and landed right in front of me to where I had to step over him. He looked at me and he said, ‘Feherty!!!!!’ He didn’t even spill his beer, which I thought was a magnificent athletic achievement apart from anything else.”

CBS Promotes Colt Knost

The Big Gravy himself, Colt Knost, announced Tuesday he is expanding his on-course reporting role with CBS in the new year. The move, which will elevate his live TV coverage into a more full-time role, comes as no surprise to keen viewers. Knost has been one of golf television’s great success stories over the last year. A sharp analytical mind and jocular on-air personality, Knost’s media ventures (including his podcast for GOLF, Subpar) have given him a burgeoning second golf career (and we’d imagine it doesn’t hurt to come recommended by Justin Thomas).

He knows the players, knows our games, great sense of humor, and is a great player in his own right to relate the on course situations to the viewers
— Justin Thomas (@JustinThomas34) September 30, 2021

Jim Nantz heads to the hall

Speaking of talented storytellers — a hearty congratulations to the don of golf television, Jim Nantz, for being named to the National Sports Media Association hall of fame last weekend. Nantz, who has been with CBS since the 80s (!), returns for another year on the network’s PGA Tour coverage in 2022.

How wide is the gap between genius and insanity? For David Feherty, it is roughly the length of a golf tee.

In 2012, the golfer-turned-broadcaster-turned-comedian was shooting footage with John Daly for an episode of Feherty when the former Open champ presented a peculiar offer.

“If you lay down and put a tee in your mouth, I could hit it off you,” Daly said, clutching his driver.

“Let’s not do anything stupid here,” a producer contested off-camera.

It was too late. Feherty — clad in dress shirt and waistcoat — had already plopped onto the ground.

“It’s not stupid, he’s a pro,” he shot back.

Slowly, Feherty lodged the tee between his teeth and placed a ball upon it.

“Believe it or not, in the moment, this seemed like a good idea,” he said later. “What could possibly go wrong?”

“Guys, let’s not do this,” the producer pleaded again.

“Just keep your eyes closed,” Daly said, waggling his driver. “It’s only going to hurt for a minute.”

“Ready?”

WHACK. A perfect drive.

Feherty leapt to his feet unscathed.

“Ta-daaaa!!!”

It was a moment of comedic absurdity borne seemingly of utter chaos. In other words, it was quintessential Feherty.

Nearly a decade after Daly’s drive, Feherty is no more. The show’s star announced Friday that Golf Channel would not be picking up an 11th season as part of a broader restructuring within the company.

“Hey Fehertwits,” Feherty wrote in a tweet. “Thank you for an amazing reaction since my show has ended. The last ten years have been a dream, thanks to the incredible people who agreed to be on this show, and all the men and women from NBC/Golf Channel. Stay tuned, you never know what might show up!”

The announcement marks the end of one of Golf Channel’s finest (and most popular) shows — a sad reality for a network in the midst of a historic upheaval from former company headquarters in Orlando to NBCUniversal’s home in Stamford, Conn. It is also a sad reality for golf fans, whose dwindling supply of pre-produced, linear television entertainment grew one show thinner with the announcement.

Feherty was, at its core, everything television executives should hope to find in an hourly, serial show. It was authentic, amusing, and unafraid to wrangle with conversations that strayed into unusual, even serious directions.

Thanks in no small part to its host’s bulky Rolodex, Feherty also proved an unwitting ambassador for the game of golf to the sporting public. Figures like Charles Barkley, Scott Van Pelt and even President Trump blurred the sport’s boundaries and introduced scores of “casual fans” to its most entertaining characters. And who better to steward a new generation of fans than Feherty, a figure embraced by both the game’s counter-culture and its most ardent traditionalists?

For 10 seasons, Feherty was, as he usually is, at the center of the story. Self-effacing, earnest, and often hilarious, he effortlessly (perhaps even unintentionally) fit the mold of “personality-driven” content — a buzzword of particular affection among media types.

When the pandemic ground the golf world to a halt in the spring of 2020, there was Feherty, digging into interviews for the show’s “Up Close from a Distance” web series. There would be no tee between his incisors, but that wouldn’t matter, Zoom proved amply capable of capturing Feherty’s trademark wit and warmth.

“I think I’m just so screwed up that crowds aren’t intimidated by me at all,” he told HBO’s Real Sports in 2016. “They feel sort of comfortable.”

Whatever the reason, Feherty cut to the heart of what serialized sports TV should feel like: a conversation between friends about a mutual passion. Feherty’s instinct for human connection made him a beloved on-course reporter, but it also helped craft his show’s tone — sharp but friendly, a talk show for sports fans.

We ask a lot of our entertainment. We want our shows to speak to us. We want them to be smart, sharp, interesting and intriguing. We want them to be digestible, palatable and insatiable. Now more than ever, we want them to transport us.

No show can deliver on all of these promises, but the good ones don’t try. They are genuinely, utterly themselves, even if it means catching John Daly’s driver to the jaw in the process.

“The first thing I want to be is informative, and then entertaining, about golf,” Feherty told GOLF in 2016. “That’s what I do. That’s job one. Anything beyond that would be gravy.”

Kudos to Feherty on 10 seasons of gravy.

For years, the USGA, led by CEO Mike Davis, has prioritized raising blood pressure in the national championship setup. This year looks no different, with narrow fairways, brutal rough and slippery greens greeting all who wish to conquer Winged Foot’s famed West Course.

On a media call, Roger Maltbie says it's "widely anticipated" among players that the winning score at next week's U.S. Open will be over par.

"I expect a lot of whining," David Feherty adds. #carnage
— James Colgan (@jamescolgan26) September 9, 2020

In fact, the U.S. Open’s difficulty has become such a popular conversation topic, it often fragments into a separate argument: is the course hard enough?

As far as Roger Maltbie is concerned, there will be no such argument this year, because this may very well be one of the most difficult U.S. Opens ever.

“I am more than excited to see Winged Foot next week. It’s provided some of the sternest tests ever in USGA history and I would expect nothing less than that this coming week,” Maltbie said. “It’s kind of widely assumed, and this comes from many different sources and guys that have gone to Winged Foot, players that have gone to Winged Foot in advance, that they’re fully expecting over par to win the championship.”

It may not be groundbreaking for a player to claim the Open with a final score over par, but it’s far from the norm. In the last two decades, just five U.S. Open winners have finished with a score over par.

Heading into U.S. Open week, Feherty and Maltbie are in agreement that the course is one of the biggest storylines. In 2017, Gil Hanse helped restore A.W. Tillinghast’s original 1923 design.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the golf course. I’m a huge A.W. Tillinghast fan,” Feherty said. “He was bipolar, so that’s one thing we have in common. I mean, I heard a story that he climbed a tree and had a couple of whiskies before he got to work in the morning, so that’s another thing we have in common.”

Jokes aside, the subtlety and complexity of Tillinghast’s original design will be front and center with the world’s best making their way to Mamaroneck, N.Y. If the bogeys start coming, so too could the frustration.

Of course, the last time a U.S. Open winner finished over par was in 2018, when Brooks Koepka conquered a brutally challenging Shinnecock Hills en route to his second consecutive title. The setup that week featured more than its fair share of complaints from the PGA Tour constituency, including Zach Johnson’s memorable “lost course” rant.

With a week left before the official start of the national championship, Steve Rabideau and the Winged Foot grounds crew have Maltbie and Feherty preparing for an old-school test (and a healthy airing of grievances).

“There are some definite, distinct flavor always to U.S. Opens, when you drove it off the fairway you knew what you were going to get, and it wasn’t good,” Maltbie said. “It’s going to be a more traditional test of U.S. Open skills, which I welcome and can’t wait to see. So all in all, really excited about next week.”

I was going through my phone the other day. You know the drill: scrolling through pictures, social media feeds and poking through underused apps.

It was during this practice I stumbled upon a few notes and a recording from a recent sit-down lunch with David Feherty. Feherty was in New York City in February to promote the 10th season of his Golf Channel show, Feherty, and I was one of a few reporters that sat with him at a corner table at a Mexican restaurant near Lincoln Center. I wrote this piece a few days later on the one guest Feherty would love to have on his show but has yet to secure, but as you might guess, that lunch was full of laughs, stories and above-average guacamole.

And just like good Mexican food, we aren’t about to let a good lunch with Feherty go to waste. Here are some of the best tales he told. Some maybe you’ve heard before, while others perhaps you haven’t. Enjoy.

Payne Stewart, swapping hotel keys and a groundhog

After one tournament round during Feherty’s playing days — the event escapes him — he joined Payne Stewart to unwind and watch a basketball game on TV. But Stewart, who Feherty said was “always a practical joker,” swapped room keys with Feherty.

“Payne plays the next day, hits a groundhog in the ass in his way back in the courtesy car,” Feherty said. “Stops, gets out, he thinks, ‘Well, it’s a perfectly good dead groundhog, and I have Feherty’s room key.'”

Then the next day …

“I come back, having played in the afternoon, and clump, I put the clubs down by the desk in the room, and a f—— beaver jumps out underneath it! You know, it scared the s— out of me,” Feherty said. “You know, this thing is foaming at the mouth and s—. I end up standing on the desk, and I’ve torn 18 inches of sheet rock out of the ceiling with the chandelier cords. And it keels over, and I’m poking it with my sand wedge, you know, to make sure the damn thing is dead. It’s a steaming pile of Stewart. That’s what it is.”

Feherty had already planned to meet Stewart again that night but wasn’t going to act like anything happened. He knew that it would annoy Stewart if he didn’t say anything, as Stewart would have loved nothing more than to see Feherty fuming. So Feherty tried to keep his cool, but that didn’t last long.

“And he comes over,” Feherty said. “‘How you doing?’ ‘Alright.’ ‘What you shoot?’ ‘Oh, a 71.’ He says, ‘Do you wanna drink?’ I said, ‘Yeah, give me a double Bushmills.’ You know, so the bartender gives me a double Bushmills and I’m like still shaking.
David Feherty and Payne Stewart Take 2

A couple of weeks after the groundhog incident, the Tour was in Greensboro, N.C., and Feherty thought it was the perfect time for payback.

“I took his courtesy car, because there wasn’t much room in the parking lot, so you had to hang your keys up so the valet could move the cars around,” Feherty said. “I think his car key, it was number 69. I remember it like it was yesterday. I took ’em around to the side of the clubhouse and tossed them into the rose bushes beside the putting green. And I come around just in time to see him leaving in my courtesy car.”

Feherty, Tiger Woods and Masters hiccups

Feherty spent 19 years covering the Masters, and for all of them he was stationed high above the action in a tower next to the 15th green. The 15th is one of the best vantage points on the course, as he could see balls being played into the crucial par-5 and irons hit into the par-3 16th.

Feherty said during this lunch, and on previous occasions, that the Masters “was difficult for me.” As someone who relies on their quick wit and colorful analysis, that wasn’t always in line with how buttoned-up Augusta National likes to run things. One day, for example, Feherty was sweating for a comment he made that lacked crucial context from the video feed.

Tiger Woods was teeing off on the 15th hole. No one had hit it near the second crosswalk in the fairway at that point, which is one-third of the way down the hill. The security guards figured it was out of reach, too, as they let patrons walk across as Woods was hitting. Feherty watched Woods tee off from the tower. “He hit it so damn hard,” Feherty remembers. “And I look out from behind the monitor, and the ball’s bouncing down the fairway toward the second crosswalk, and there was one lady that saw it, and she was wearing a long skirt and tennis shoes. She went ‘Uh-oh!’ (and jumped) like there was a little mouse running into the room, you know. And it ran through the crosswalk, and I said, ‘Oh, well, the ladies have to lift their skirts for that one.’ And I looked back at the monitor, and we’re still tight on Tiger’s face. So every women in the vicinity, you know, had exposed themselves to Tiger, as far as the bureau was concerned. It’s like, ‘Oh, s—. I thought we were going to be following the ball?!'”

Two 1s are better than 1 at the Masters

Another Masters moment came during the first round of the 1998 Masters, when Ignacio Garrido was running into all sorts of problems on the 15th. The broadcast, however, never cut away from Feherty and stayed with Garrido for every single shot, until he eventually made an 11. Feherty struggled to call the discouraging series of events.

“This is my ballpark,” Feherty said. “So I said, ‘Well, that’s 6. Well, that’s 8. And that’s 9. And 11.’ I said, ‘Well, it’s always nice to have two 1s on your scorecard.’ Well, that didn’t f—— go down very well at all.”

An iconic divot takes over a lawn

Arnold Palmer played his last Masters in 2004, and he, like all legends, received quite the sendoff in his final round. Feherty recalls a story of a spotter on the 18th hole watching Palmer play the par-4 finisher.

“Arnold hits some kind of a wood for his second shot and took a little divot, but (the spotter) was standing there and he thought, ‘That’s Arnold Palmer’s last divot at Augusta; I think I’ll keep it,'” Feherty said. “The spotter took it back home and stamped it into a hole in his yard.

“It took over his lawn,” Feherty continued. “His backyard is Arnold Palmer’s last divot at Augusta.”

After Feherty soiled his underwear in a joke attempt gone awry, golf on CBS coordinating producer Lance Barrow instructed him to conduct a post-round interview with Tiger Woods. Let’s let McCord tell the rest of the story.

“So Lance goes, ‘David, I want you to stay down there and get an interview from Tiger.’ He stops, slumps his shoulders and walks back to Tiger. Now, the cameraman locks the camera on the three guys. We’ve got Tiger in the middle, we’ve got Stevie (Williams, Tiger’s longtime caddie) over here, who’s at best 1 and 1A (with Feherty) as far as flatulence, and we’ve got (Feherty) over here, microphone in his hands.”

Then, the moment of truth.

“All of a sudden, you see Tiger (sniffing). He turns to Stevie and he goes, ‘you didn’t!’ And Stevie goes, ‘I didn’t do it!’ He turns to David, and as soon as he looks at David, David goes, ‘I s— myself on fifteen.’ Tiger jumped up in the air!”

Feherty’s brutal honesty did little to help the situation. Tiger wanted out of the interview, even if he’d run out of time.

“David goes to put the mic in Tiger’s (face) and (he’s) running—he’s getting away from it. So David’s trying to get the mic, and Tiger’s running that way because the stench is so bad. It was hilarious to watch.”

So there you have it, McCord’s wackiest (and surely smelliest) memory of Feherty, one we’d guess Tiger hasn’t forgotten either.

Longtime CBS on-course reporters Gary McCord and Peter Kostis didn’t have their contracts renewed for 2020, and in the months since both have expressed their displeasure with the decision, while reflecting on their time between the ropes.

McCord first joined CBS in 1986 and, along with Kostis, was an integral part of broadcasts up until his contract expired. Now, he sees the broadcast through a different lens (from his couch at home), and the criticism the network’s coverage has weathered recently has not been lost on him.

“I’m now the witness,” McCord said on this week’s episode of GOLF’s Subpar with hosts Drew Stoltz and Colt Knost. “I’m not part of it. You can kind of react to it from a position I have never had before for a long, long time. It just so happens that my former network is not doing as well as they would like with the golf broadcast at this point. I have never seen anything quite as negative as I’ve seen coming out of everywhere about what’s going on, so I have a lot of empathy. Those are my friends. I don’t want to see them fail, but they are getting blasted. It’s not a good time.”

In McCord and Kostis’ wake, CBS added Davis Love III, Trevor Immelman and Frank Nobilo to its broadcast team, among others. When asked if he had any specific critiques while watching the broadcasts now, McCord said he has paid attention to the flow, or how the announcers play off one another.

“Let’s take sitcoms,” McCord said. “If you are going to produce a sitcom, I’m gonna go in, and I’m going to find four people that are totally different, and I’m going to put them in a bar, in a room, anywhere. You can start with I Love Lucy and you can go to Cheers and Modern Family and now Schitt’s Creek, and every one is different. You don’t put the same people in a room and go talk. It’s going to come out the same every time. It’s going to be dull and boring. This is entertainment.

“If you go, ‘Wow, that was a great shot, and let’s go to Gary.’ ‘Oh, that was a wonderful shot, and how about that one? That was fantastic.’ Are you kidding me? You can’t have that,” McCord said. “You gotta have this ridicule. Some guys gotta jack it up and another guy has to break and you got to get those people together and get your team together and do it. And that’s what we are lacking at this point in my humble opinion.”
