What’s the best way to produce more torque in your golf swing?

In order to generate clubhead speed in your swing, it’s important to understand torque and how it aids you in producing that speed. It’s something that is preached by coaches all the time, but what is the best way to generate torque? GOLF Top 100 Teacher Mark Blackburn broke it down for us in this edition of Home Practice. The first thing to understand with torque is the frontal plane of your swing. The best visual for this is to imagine there is a windmill that rotates down the line as your swing.

“That’s a byproduct of, as we get to the top of the backswing, we’re now going to keep our mass back and try to get our pressure forward,” Blackburn says.

When you do this, you are generating resistance that helps produce the torque in your swing.

“If you think of a swing that’s quite vertical, that would be more in the frontal plane,” Blackburn says.

An easy way to get a feel for this move is as you turn back, try to get the sensation that you’re keeping your mass back while simultaneously pushing up with your lead leg.

“That is going to work on your frontal plane torque,” Blackburn says.

If you can generate this torque in your swing, you’ll be producing more swing speed and with it, longer drives.
