Welcome to Spotted on Tour, where we’ll highlight buzzy apparel, gear, gadgets and more that caught our eye over the weekend. Better yet, we’ll help you get your hands on your own.
In the context of history, there’s plenty of room for litigating the Players Championship’s claim to being golf’s “fifth major.” In the context of golf fashion, however, there is not.
For the golf fashion industry at least, the sands of history have made clear the Players is the sport’s fifth major. Just as during major championship weeks, the Players is home to product releases, sponsorship announcements, and perhaps most importantly for the fashion-conscious, outfit scripting.
It’s all an opportunity for golf’s biggest brands to showcase their newest products while the tournament captures the attention of the sports world. And this week’s trip to Ponte Vedra has proven no different.
The Players — with more than 45 of the top 50 players in the world in attendance — is a unique time for taking brand stock. And this week, we’re buying J. Lindeberg.
JL is one of golf’s fastest-rising apparel brands, earning an immediate reputation for its quirky product line and eagle-eyed approach to talent acquisition. Today, the brand owns sponsorship deals with two of the best young players in the men’s and women’s games, in World No. 2 Nelly Korda and No. 3 Viktor Hovland.
Founded in 1996 by famed Swedish designer Johan Lindeberg, J. Lindeberg prides itself on producing fashion-forward looks for the modern player — an effort that’s clear in this week’s launch of the company’s all-new Tour Collection. The new, limited-edition collection was crafted in celebration of golf’s biggest tournaments and will be released in two drops: at the Players and later, at the Masters.
This week’s drop is a requiem in orange, with a sampling of four unique designs that will be worn by each of JL’s current PGA Tour staffers: Hovland and Matt Wallace.
“Some things are a bit out there when you first see them, but they grow on you,” Wallace told GOLF. “I even wore a tie, which was part of a capsule celebrating [former Swedish pro golfer] Jesper Parnevik, at the Players two years ago.”
It also helps that every shirt from JL’s bubbly new collection is made with OEKO-TEX, a unique fabric built for comfort and flexibility on the course.
Ultimately, Wallace says, the J. Lindeberg collection is built for golfers who live at the intersection of performance and style.
“It’s that blend of being functional and looking good,” Wallace said. “You want both, and JL has always had that balance.”
