Let’s be honest: Playing some of the country’s most historic courses such as Cypress Point, The Country Club, Merion, etc., are out of reach for most of us. However, that doesn’t mean playing courses relevant to golf history is impossible.
Our most-read travel story of 2022 was a guide to three historic (and fun) courses you can play for less than $50.
The first was Galen Hall Golf Club, about an hour from Philadelphia. This course claims to have the oldest island green in golf and has nine holes laid out by A.W. Tillinghast.
The Hotchkiss School Golf Course in Connecticut is home to a nine-hole Seth Raynor design that can be played for just $16.
And Marion Golf Couse in Massachusetts is the oldest original design of George C. Thomas, designer of West Coast classics like Riviera, Los Angeles Country Club and Bel-Air.
