Let’s be honest: Playing some of the country’s most historic courses such as Cypress Point, The Country Club, Merion, etc., are out of reach for most of us. However, that doesn’t mean playing courses relevant to golf history is impossible.

The 35 best golf courses in California (2022/2023)
By: GOLF’s Course Raters and Ran Morrissett, Architecture Editor

The first was Galen Hall Golf Club, about an hour from Philadelphia. This course claims to have the oldest island green in golf and has nine holes laid out by A.W. Tillinghast.

The Hotchkiss School Golf Course in Connecticut is home to a nine-hole Seth Raynor design that can be played for just $16.

And Marion Golf Couse in Massachusetts is the oldest original design of George C. Thomas, designer of West Coast classics like Riviera, Los Angeles Country Club and Bel-Air.

All three are among the few public access courses by the three architects, and you can find even more historical significance to them by reading the full story here.
