Not that scoring is ever a concern of PGA Tour fans, but if for some reason it was heading into the 2022 season, the first few days of the Sentry Tournament of Champions have all-but-eliminated it. Heading into Sunday morning at Kapalua, leaders Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith enter at 26 under par. That’s just a hair under a birdie every other hole pace, an effort buffeted by Rahm’s course-record tying 61 on Saturday afternoon.

Further back, Daniel Berger looks to mount a Sunday charge after a trio of 66s to open the week, while Patrick Cantlay, Sungjae Im and Matt Jones (all -20) enter needing red-hot Sundays to vault back into contention. Further back, Justin Thomas looks to build off a course record-tying round of his own on Saturday by climbing into the top five on Sunday.

Below, find the payout information and winner’s share for the Tournament of Champions’ $8.2 million purse; you can catch the action this afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. ET on NBC, and continuing at 6 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.

If you’re a regular golf-watcher, you can probably picture many of the toughest holes on Tour: the meaty par-4 closers at Bay Hill and Quail Hollow; the recently lengthened par-4 5th at Augusta National; the 233-yard par-3 11th at Torrey Pines South. Bruisers all of them.

But what of the easiest holes? Or that matter, the easiest hole, period?

In the 2020-21 season, that distinction went to the 526-yard par-5 5th on the Plantation Course at Kapalua, home of the Tournament of Champions. The boys are back in Maui this week for the ToC, and exactly one round into 2022, Kapalua’s defenseless 5th is already well positioned to defend its title as the Tour’s biggest pushover, as noted Thursday evening in a tweet from Chris Solomon at No Laying Up.

This is so sick.

2 pars and 1 bogey on the 5th today. 35 birdies and eagles!

So close to a clean full shot under par. pic.twitter.com/XrvmiCKNKW
— No Laying Up (@NoLayingUp) January 7, 2022

How easy was the 5th? Of the 38 players in the field, 33 made birdie, 2 made eagle, 2 more made par and just a single player — Patrick Reed — made bogey, the result of a blocked tee shot into the native area right of the fairway. Reed hit a second tee ball, knocked his fourth shot on to the green and two-putted for his 6.

The scoring average for the hole on Thursday was a gaudy 4.053, meaning Reed, who shot a one-over 74, lost nearly 2 full strokes to the field with a bogey. Not something you see often.

The 5th actually doesn’t look that easy, at least not for mere mortals. The fairway — which has a center-line bunker — banks left to right, and you can’t miss too far right or you’ll pull a Reed. From the fairway, should you choose to go for it, you’re left with a daunting second over a gnarly ravine that guards the front-right of the green. Trouble can be found!

Just not by Tour pros, apparently. On Thursday, the field, on average, was left with only 177 yards into the green, which doesn’t present much of a risk-reward decision for players who can hit 8-irons that distance. No risk, all reward. Making scoring even easier in the first round: preferred lies were in effect on account of soggy conditions.

“I didn’t find it all too difficult,” South African Eric Van Rooyen said after posting a six-under 67 that has him four back of leader Cameron Smith. “I think the course needs a bit of breeze to really protect it. The fairways are quite wide and it’s playing so soft, so if that doesn’t happen then the scores will be really low.”

And at the 5th, really, really low.

The other easiest holes on Tour last season? No surprise, the top 10 softballs were all par-5s. Runner-up honors went to another Hawaii hole, the 506-yard par-5 9th at Waialae (Sony Open), which had a scoring average of 4.171. The third-easiest hole was the par-5th at Sedgefield (Wyndham Championship), which had a scoring average of 4.220.

The easiest non-par-5 was the 341-yard par-4 15th at TPC Summerlin (Shriners), with a 3.464 scoring average.

Here, courtesy of the PGA Tour’s ShotLink database, are the top 10 most toothless holes from last season:

Below is all the information you need to know about purse money, including payout information and winner’s share.

Tournament of Champions final round preview

Ryan Palmer and Harris English share the 54-hole lead entering Sunday at the Plantation Course at Kapalua Bay. The pair of pros are 21-under heading into Sunday, but trailed closely by a host of big names.

Most notably, PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa sits just one stroke off the lead heading into the final round. Morikawa (-20) has fired three consecutive rounds in the 60s, including a pair of 65s leading into Sunday. The locale is truly paradise: swaying palm trees, breaching humpbacks, and average daily highs that reach 80 degrees … in January!

Not only that, but the newly revamped Tour venue is both a feast for the eyes and a stern test for pros and recreational players alike.
Coming from the east coast makes things a bit more pricey — not to mention time-consuming. From JFK, you’re looking at a layover and at least $500 in airfare. The price is slightly higher from BOS.

“It was time — time for a rejuvenation,” Coore told GOLF.com

Here’s what you need to know about those changes — and the competitors who’ll face them — before play in Kapalua gets underway.

Ditto Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson. But eight members of the United States Presidents Cup team will be on hand, as will bomber Cameron Champ, first-time winner Collin Morikawa and Twitter sensation (and 2019 Wells Fargo champ) Max Homa.

Why the changes: “Golf courses are living, breathing creatures, and they evolve,” Plantation co-designer Coore says. In this case, though, the evolution was hastened by climate change.

In recent years, shifting rain and wind patterns on Kapalua (which ranked 24th on GOLF’s 2017 list of Top 100 Courses You Can Play) had altered playing conditions, tenderizing the turf and turning the course into a softer target than the firm, fast layout it had once been. That made things too easy on the Tour pros, who can tear apart soft tracks no matter how far back you put the tees, and too long and tough for resort golfers, who could no longer rely on bounce and roll. The recent work was meant to reverse those trends by reviving the original firm, fast conditions and reintroducing the quirks of the ground game: a more compelling challenge for the world’s best players, and a fairer test for the rest of us.

What they changed: They’re calling the work a “refinement,” not a renovation. The Plantation’s routing has not been touched. But the entire course has been re-turfed (to durable, drought-tolerant Celebration Bermuda); all the greens and bunkers have been re-built, and new professional tees have been added to sharpen the tournament test. A number of the greens have been enlarged, creating more viable pin positions, while some of the wildest contours have been calmed, making the putting surfaces more manageable for the mortals who play the course throughout the year.

What will never change: You hear it every year when the Masters rolls around: television flattens courses. Maybe so. But there’s no disguising the rise and fall of the Plantation Course, which features more dramatic elevation changes than any stop on the PGA Tour, with holes that swoop along the shoulder of the Kahalawai Mountains. The high point of the course is 510 feet. It’s also an expansive property, with a footprint of roughly 316 acres (including the gorges that the routing works around). For comparison, the Tour’s next stop after Kapalua will be the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club, on Oahu, which covers roughly 120 acres and has a maximum elevation change of about 10 feet.

How it’s playing now: When the Plantation Course first opened in 1992, “it was meant to play like Royal Melbourne, firm and fast,” says longtime golf broadcaster and Kapalua resident Mark Rolfing, who was involved in both the original construction and the recent refinements. As Rolfing sees it, it’s no accident that Australians Stuart Appleby and Geoff Ogilvy combined to win five times over the first 10 years that the event was held at the course.

This year, there are no Aussies in the field. But much of the Sandbelt bounciness is back, despite a recent spate of rain on Kapalua, so expect to see more of the ground game from the pros and less of the same-old aerial assaults.

Earlier this week, Rolfing spoke with Johnson after DJ had wrapped a practice round. “He said, ‘You definitely made it harder.’” Rolfing says. “I wouldn’t say that simply making it harder was the goal. But a more compelling challenge — that was the intent.”

At last year’s Sentry, Gary Woodland, entering the final round with a three-stroke lead, shot five-under and still lost to Schauffele’s course-record-tying 62. “Put it this way,” Rolfing says. “I don’t expect something like that this time around.”

The PGA Tour returns this week for the first event of 2019 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Maui, Hawaii. For the 21st straight year, the event will take place at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course. Here’s everything that you need to know about the Plantation Course.

1. The origin of the course: The Plantation Course was built and designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore in 1991. Managed by Troon, the course is located on the slopes of the West Maui Mountains and features ocean views at every hole. As previously mentioned, Kapalua has been the home of the Sentry Tournament of Champions since 1999.

2. The design and layout of the course: The par 73 course runs 7,411 yards and features wide fairways and generous greens that are sure to make both professional and average golfers happy. The course has three par 3’s and four par 5’s, as well as four different tees for golfers to play from at each hole. Because the course is located within mountains, there are many downhill tee shots. As a result, golfers of all skills should drive the ball well and find the course very playable.

The most aggressive slope can be found on the course’s longest hole, the par-5 18th, which is 663 yards long from the championship tees. Meanwhile, the shortest hole on the course is the par-3 11th tee, which measures just 164 yards from the championship tees.

3. The future of the course: The Plantation course will be shutting down in February for a complete redesign that will be overseen by Crenshaw, Coore, and Troon. Every green will be resurfaced and every bunker will be renovated, while tees, fairways, and roughs will be re-grassed. The redesign will also include the addition of several new tournament tees and forward tees, as well as the relocation of several bunkers. The course is expected to reopen in November 2019.

Maui’s wow-wee layout, the Plantation course at Kapalua Resort, is shutting down for repairs. The expected closing date is February 2019. Host venue for the PGA Tour’s Sentry Tournament of Champions since 1999 and ranked No. 24 in GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses You Can Play, Plantation is a wildly undulating, 27-year-old creation from Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Coore and Crenshaw will oversee the enhancement project, in conjunction with Troon’s (the management company) design and agronomy team. Maui resident and long-time broadcaster Mark Rolfing will also assist.

Among the refinements will be resurfacing every green with Tif Eagle Bermuda, renovating every bunker, re-grassing tees, fairways and roughs with Celebration Bermuda turf and adding several new tournament tees and forward tees. Several bunkers will be relocated as well.

“It’s time — time for a rejuvenation,” Coore told GOLF.com. “Architecturally speaking, the changes are truly minimal. But like everything, golf courses are living, breathing creatures, and they evolve. They need polishing after awhile. That’s what we’re going to do here.”

From a design standpoint, Coore is “most fascinated” by the addition of a new tee box at the par-4 4th, close to the 3rd green. “We actually had it roughed in there from Day 1, but it was never put into use. Back in the days when many of the guys were hitting persimmon drivers, that tee was considered too demanding. Today, the guys are hitting it so far, well past the existing bunkers, that reviving that tee would be perfect. It’s been sitting there all these years. We will just add some irrigation and cut back the native grasses.”

Coore is also enthusiastic about “restoring the visual character” of the bunkers that dot the layout (shapes and edges), as well as combining a teeing ground at holes 3 and 9. He’s also pleased about adding approximately 10 forward tees to enhance playability for resort guests. However, what he touts as the “single biggest positive” of the refinement project is the re-grassing of the fairways and green collars. “We want to get the run back into the course. In the early days, we had conditions (at holes such as the 7th and 18th) where you needed to land the ball 30 to 40 yards short of the green. Conditions had become softer and softer over the years. Removing the thatch layer and re-grassing with Celebration will restore the ability to have the ground influence shots into the greens, just as it was in the beginning.”

Kapalua’s Plantation course is expected to re-open in November 2019.
