Now putt, Annie says.

She’s Jordan Spieth’s wife. She’s his recently turned putting counsel. On Saturday, during the third round of the RBC Heritage, her man and her student missed from 11 feet on the 18th green at Harbour Town Golf Links, circled around the hole, then missed from 11 inches. Spieth and Jim Nantz were stunned.

But Annie cut to the chase.

Take. Your. Time.

“So Annie told me last night, you need to take five seconds now — and she never comments on my golf,” Spieth said Sunday. “You need to take five seconds, if you miss a putt, before you hit your tap-in. So I thought about it today. There was a couple times I was just going to rake it, and I was like, no, I’ve got to take five seconds.”

For the record, a GOLF.com reporter estimated that Spieth took one second (one one-thousand) on his hiccup on Saturday. And Spieth said Sunday that he hoped it would cost him — “because, if it didn’t, it meant I just played a very average round today.”

In the end, as you know by now, he didn’t. During the RBC final round, Spieth rallied with a five-under 66, and he won after a one-hole playoff with Patrick Cantlay. The putt was but one stroke.

And it wasn’t.

“I was about as upset after the round yesterday as I’ve ever been in a golf tournament,” Spieth said. “There’s just no excuse for those kind of brain farts as a professional to myself, but also to Michael [Greller, his caddie], who’s working his butt off, to go out there and do that that could potentially affect the outcome of a tournament. And I’ve done that a number of times on this stretch in the last four weeks.”

Is there an explanation behind it all? Spieth isn’t missing just short putts, either. Notably, he won despite losing strokes to the field in putting (he was 65th at the RBC in SG: Putting, at -2.545.).

Spieth’s guess? It again goes back to time.

“I’ve been hitting the ball really, really well all spring, better than I did last year, and I just haven’t been scoring,” he said. “So I just, I put in a lot of hours on the putting green this week, and to be honest, if it helped incrementally, it was just enough.

“I’ve got a lot more work to do. I’ve been putting a lot of work into my full swing, and that certainly takes away some of the time you put into other parts of your game, including putting.

“So I think I can kind of shift the other direction now and get to really working on the stroke, which is what I tried to do this week off of last week. That was the frustration.”

Jordan Spieth says that his wife Annie never comments on his golf. But when he saw her after Saturday’s third round at the RBC Heritage, she couldn’t help but offer a simple piece of advice.

“You need to take five seconds, if you miss a putt, before you hit your tap-in.”

The comment came as a direct response to the way in which Spieth’s Saturday ended: with a missed one-footer on the 18th green. The subtext of Annie’s advice was clear: Her husband might be an even better golfer if he wasn’t so damn thrilling to watch.

If this weekend in Hilton Head proved anything, it’s that when Spieth is anywhere near contention, golf fans need to get near a television. The RBC falls directly in the Masters hangover zone; we couldn’t possibly have been expected to care about another golf tournament just a week after Augusta wrapped. But we tuned in anyway because it’s Jordan Spieth, because we’ve watched him grow up on the PGA Tour, because we’ve seen him go from phenom to struggling artist to family man to reinvented golfer, all before the age of 29.

It’s a testament to the Jordan Spieth Experience that golf fans enthusiastically re-boarded the PGA Tour carousel, but reboard we did. And those of us tuning into the action from Harbour Town were rewarded with a thrilling Sunday in which a dozen or more players had a chance to win coming down the stretch. We saw strange penalties, chip shots into the water, crucial made and missed putts, rallies and meltdowns. It was an exciting day with exciting twists and turns, and the golfer left standing at the end was the most exciting of all.

How did Spieth explain his final-round 66? One reporter suggested it was an “unbelievable rollercoaster.” Spieth shrugged that off.

“It felt like a round of golf,” he said matter-of-factly. “It felt like a Sunday on the PGA Tour.”

Not all rounds of golf are created equal. And no other golfer is created like Jordan Spieth. His Sunday featured two eagles in his first five holes, a must-make 10-footer for birdie on 18 and a clutch up-and-down from the bunker in a playoff. His ability to present that as just another day at the office reminds us: Spieth is used to getting wild.

That’s his way, after all. Impossible shots look easy. Easy shots look impossible. It’s never boring, and it’s never simple, and the moment you think you’ve figured out how his tournament is going to go is typically followed quickly by the moment you realize you’re wrong.

Spieth entered Sunday at the RBC in a state of deep frustration.

He was upset about missing his first career cut at Augusta National, where he’d been nearly invincible, logging five top-threes in eight starts before this.

“I hated it. It was the worst feeling. It was the worst feeling as a golfer that I can remember,” he recalled on Sunday. “It’s my favorite tournament in the world, and I just love contending at that event. I was hitting it really, really well and honestly just didn’t feel like I deserved to miss that cut. I felt like I hit shots right where I wanted to and ended up somehow at 6 over.”

Spieth was frustrated, too, about the way he’d finished Saturday, with that missed shortie at 18. His frustration began the moment the ball lipped out, leaving him shell-shocked in front of the entire crowd. It continued through the night.

“Even this morning, I was kicking myself. I thought about it all night. Just like — how am I going to get that back?”

He got it back by being Jordan Spieth.

That meant a chip-in for eagle at No. 2. It meant a 25-footer for another eagle at No. 5. It meant a birdie at No. 8 to get into serious contention. And it meant a miss from inside four feet for par at No. 9, followed by a missed five-footer at No. 11, just to make you feel silly for get invested. That’s one of the funny things about this version of Spieth: The ball-striking has returned but the putter has gone balky. He was the best golfer in the field from tee to green. Once he got onto the green, he was one of the worst, losing 2.5 strokes putting.

The way he played the 18th hole on Saturday and the way he played the 18th hole Sunday, taken together, tell you something about the Spieth Experience. Each day he hit his approach to just outside of 10 feet. On Saturday what happened next was a shocking three-putt bogey. On Sunday Spieth coolly buried the putt in the center to post the clubhouse lead, forcing the rest of the field to come catch him. They didn’t.

Leader in the clubhouse.@JordanSpieth finishes with a birdie on 18 and posts 13-under par as the score to beat. pic.twitter.com/pyzXBIJh1L
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 17, 2022

That’s Spieth. The good, the bad and the ugly. The thrilling, the shocking, the sense of anticipation. (You get the director’s-cut commentary, too — caddie Michael Greller may be the hardest-working caddie and best listener on Tour. No wonder he forgot his bib for the playoff.)

The fact that Spieth’s wife Annie and their baby son Sammy were there to greet him on the 18th green was a reminder that times have changed. Spieth credited Sammy with being a champion sleeper and with being a good hang in the mornings pre-round.

“It just takes your mind off of things and puts it where it should be, which is in the moment of hanging out. I really, really enjoyed that.”

That’s one of Spieth’s secrets: He gets fully invested in the moment. It means he makes a verbal pros-and-cons list before every shot. It means he makes every swing with intentionality. It means he makes a mess and then cleans it up, and if he can’t clean it up it’s because he’s tried so hard that he’s actually made it worse. It means he makes every shot count.

At least, as long as he remembers to take five seconds.

But if he always remembered to play it cool, he wouldn’t be Jordan Spieth. If there were no missed tap-ins or ill-advised hook stingers from the woods, he wouldn’t be Jordan Spieth. There wouldn’t necessarily be a lineup of kids waiting for him as he exited his winner’s press conference. And this latest win wouldn’t mean quite as much for the golf world. But this is Jordan Spieth, so it does.

Admit it: You winced.

On the first hole of a playoff on Sunday at the RBC Heritage, after hitting into the front greenside bunker on 18 at Harbour Town Golf Links, Jordan Spieth blasted out to 7 inches — and you became a bit uneasy. A day earlier on 18, Spieth missed from 11 feet. Then from 11 inches. And that followed a similar whiff at the Texas Open, just two weeks earlier.

OK you can open your eyes now, Spieth fan. Your man buried the putt. He buried his demons. There’s no woulda, coulda, shoulda. Spieth shot a five-under 66, watched a host of players volley back and forth with the lead, then parred the first hole of a playoff — on a 7-inch putt — while Patrick Cantlay bogeyed on his way to his 13th PGA Tour title, and his first since last Easter.

More bunker brilliance by @JordanSpieth in a playoff.

This approach on the first playoff hole sealed the victory @RBC_Heritage. pic.twitter.com/ghI8arP11P
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 17, 2022

After the Saturday missed putt, Spieth began Sunday three back, then quickly whittled down his deficit. He eagled the 549-yard, par-5 2nd on a hole-out from a greenside bunker. He eagled again, on the 574-yard, par-5 5th, this time on a 23-foot putt, and he was tied for the lead.

From there, a host of players all had a chance to join Spieth and Cantlay in the playoff — in the end, third-round leader Harold Varner, Shane Lowry, Cam Davis, J.T. Poston, Cameron Young, Sepp Straka and Matt Kuchar all finished a shot back of Spieth’s and Cantlay’s 13-under total.

Erik van Rooyen briefly held a two-shot lead, then played the back nine at three-over. Straka held a share of the lead, then bogeyed the 18th. Lowry held a one-shot lead, then double-bogeyed the 198-yard, par-3 14th after chipping into the water from left of the green. Varner could not make a birdie on the back nine. And Spieth and Cantlay took advantage.

Spieth cemented his 13-under spot with a birdie on 18, and Cantlay reached the number with a birdie on 17. On the first hole of the playoff, each found the greenside bunker, then Spieth nearly holed his, while Cantlay struggled with his plugged lie and bogeyed.

And a host of Spieth fans exhaled.

The takeaway

Spieth’s latest swing changes seem to be taking hold. Just in time, too.

The leaderboard breakdown

— The leaderboard, after Saturday’s third round, reads like this: Harold Varner is at 11-under, Shane Lowry, Erik Van Rooyen and Patrick Cantlay are at 10-under, and Hudson Swafford, Matt Kuchar, Sepp Straka and Aaron Wise are at nine-under.

Harold Varner III is opinionated, and Saturday, he opined.

Here’s HV3 on his newborn son, Harold IV: “I’m going to play with my kid. He goes to sleep at like 8:30. It’s unbelievable. It’s like an old man. Come into the world going to sleep all the time, go out of the world sleeping all the time.”

Here’s HV3 on Patrick Cantlay: “The most impressive thing with Patrick is when you ask him a question in the media, it is so thought out. I’m just like, yeah, you know, I’m cool, man, I’m trying to go home, let me answer this question, whatever. But he is so well spoken. Obviously he’s a smart kid, but you know, to be able to articulate, especially when he doesn’t agree with someone — I know what I say when I don’t agree with someone: It’s just two words.”

Here’s HV3 on Tiger Woods’ return last week at the Masters: “You know what’s weird, man. And I know he’s getting old, but he’s not that old. So you hear people and they’re like, I don’t when we’re going to see him again. I’m like, is he 100, or is he 46? So that was weird to me. I don’t care if he has one foot or two feet. That guy, he’s so good.”

Varner had joined the CBS broadcast of the RBC Heritage third round, where he shot an eight-under 63 to enter Sunday’s final round with a one-stroke lead, and announcers Colt Knost and Amanda Renner teed him up for takes. And perhaps his hottest?

Here’s HV3 on Jordan Spieth’s pre-shot routine as they watched him ahead of a stroke:

“What do you think of that little rehearsal right there?” Knost asked Varner.

“Uhhhh.”

There was laughter, then Varner continued.

“I mean, I thought he was about to hit it actually. We’ve had some great things in the group text about that rehearsal, but, uh, none I’d rather comment on here. But if you’re hitting shots like that I’d rehearse it.”

“Who’s in that group chat?” Renner asked.

“Uh, no, no way,” Varner said. “None that I’d like to say on the air.”

If you haven’t seen Spieth’s move, it goes something like this: He takes the club back, pauses slightly about halfway into the backswing, slowly takes the club back farther, then slides his hands forward and returns the club to address. It helps him get his swing into position.

Of course, there are other ways to frame it. No, Varner’s group text is not alone in making sense of it all.

“Well, basically, he feels like he has a tendency that the club gets stuck behind him and he comes in to underneath,” analyst Gary Koch said two weeks ago on Golf Channel’s broadcast of the Texas Open. “So he’s trying to get the club pointed left at the top of his swing and then get the club out in front of him to where he can get the club moving to the left going through and produce that little fade.”

“It’s hard to explain that move, other than by saying that it’s allowed him to dig his way out of a slump, to become roughly half the player he used to be,” Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee recently wrote on Twitter. “If you want to thwart or hobble a genius athlete all one needs to do is getting them thinking about their action.”

On Saturday, Varner eventually left the broadcast. On Sunday, he played for his PGA Tour title.

“I’m still thinking about group texting,” analyst Nick Faldo said on the broadcast. “It wasn’t quite like that in my day.”

Most positive golf acts are intentional — a shot to that side of the fairway, a well-struck approach to that shelf on the green, a putt to break at that ridge.

But some positive golf acts, Collin Morikawa learned on Sunday morning, are a matter of fate.

On Sunday at the RBC Heritage, the two-time major champ discovered one of his career’s most pleasant surprises — an action that was neither intentional nor good … and yet resulted in a birdie nonetheless.

It was there, on the short par-4 13th, that Morikawa faced a chip shot from the edge of a greenside bunker on an awkward uphill slope. As the 24-year-old surveyed the shot, he noticed the downslope on the green was a hornet’s nest. The only way to get the ball to the hole was to land it near the hole. Anything short of that would likely hit the downslope and die well before the flagstick, leaving a difficult (and long) downhill par try.

So Morikawa lined up his shot to do exactly that, aiming for a high, arcing chip to cut into the green and stop shy of the hole. But when he finally struck his ball, he immediately knew something was wrong. Morikawa’s wedge cut through the rough underneath his TaylorMade ball so well, it nearly missed the ball altogether. Instead of catching the shot with the sharp, spinny grooves on the bottom of the clubface, he caught it with the smaller, less-controlled grooves at the top of it.

Rather than shooting high into the air, Morikawa’s ball plopped just inches above the ground, catching a tuft of rough on the greenside area as it rolled down toward the hole.

“Oh, he got underneath it,” the PGA Tour Live commentator chided. “It needs to go.”

The 24-year-old recoiled, then facepalmed. His ball was about to land way short of the hole … unless?

“And it’s going … in! What a miss!” The announcer cried as the ball hit the flagstick and dropped into the hole. The crowd erupted into a cheer. It was a chip-in birdie for Collin Morikawa, and an unintentional one at that.

For his part, Morikawa couldn’t take credit. He shook his head and offered a sheepish wave as he retrieved his ball from the hole.

You can check out the whole highlight below.

Morikawa would go on to finish Sunday at 6 under, tied for 33rd and a safe distance from the lead at the RBC Heritage. Still, should the result hold, he could see an extra $2,000 in his check from this week thanks to the extra stroke from the accidental chip-in.

Once again, in golf as in life, it’s much better to be lucky than good.

The former major-winner has once again found himself in contention on the PGA Tour, but it hasn’t been without typical Spiethian high jinks. The 28-year-old enters Sunday’s final round at the RBC Heritage at 8 under, trailing by only three strokes off the lead — but that deficit could be even less, if not for an all-time blow-up on the 54th green.

On Saturday afternoon, Spieth three-putted the 18th and final green to close out his round, missing an 18-inch (!!!) putt in the process. The bogey on No. 18 dropped him from 9 to 8 under, and broadened the deficit by a stroke.

The leader heading into Sunday is Harold Varner III (-11), who enters the final round with a one-stroke lead over the trio of Erik Van Rooyen, Patrick Cantlay and Shane Lowry. Also in contention are Hudson Swafford, Matt Kuchar and Sepp Straka.

The fan, Varner said, saw things differently.

And, according to Varner, a PGA Tour rules official sided with the fan.

“I don’t think that’s right,” Varner said. “I don’t think that’s right at all. Like I don’t get it. It doesn’t make sense.”

The sequence in question happened on Friday, when, after Varner hit his tee shot right and toward a white-staked out-of-bounds area on the par-4 6th at Harbour Town Golf Links, he called on a spectator to help him search for his ball. Separating Varner from where the ball could have settled was a small creek, and the onlooker, likely staying in one of the nearby homes, was on its other side.

At this point, Varner said after Saturday’s third round, a ball turned up. Varner asked the fan to identify it, and as the fan relayed that it was Varner’s, Varner said, the fan accidentally moved it from inbounds to out of bounds.

“Hit it out of bounds and just — man, I just didn’t really know what to do,” said Varner, who was not asked to talk to reporters on Friday. “This old man was trying to help, and he ended up picking up my golf ball, and then he almost fell in the creek. Then we’re sitting there, and we’re like, well, the ball’s not exactly where it was.”

As shown on PGA Tour Live’s broadcast, Varner and his caddie, Chris Rice, then called for rules official Stephen Cox. After the three of them crossed over to where the ball was, Cox ruled that the ball out of bounds, forcing Varner back to the tee to hit his third shot. But Varner said on Saturday that he had told Cox that the fan had moved his ball. Varner also said that Cox had asked the man about what had happened.

“Coxy asked him where the ball was — the guy’s like, oh, I put the ball back right where it was,” Varner said. “I just happened to be right there, and I’m like, no, he didn’t. I find it weird that the rules are — why would what he says matter about what I saw? I don’t get that. So I’ll talk to Coxy about it. I thought that was very odd.”

A reporter then asked Varner, “Is the idea that it might have been inbounds and he might have moved it out by accident?”

“Without a doubt,” Varner said. “The biggest thing for me that I could sleep on is that there was out of bounds right of the creek, and the TV said it’s in the creek. There’s a golf ball right there. I’m not going to be naive and be like my ball couldn’t go there. So I did the right thing, and I said, hey, can you see if that’s my ball? At the time, we couldn’t find a bridge to get across the creek.

“It’s great. I won’t stop talking about it until I talk to Coxy. At some point, the players should have — if I wouldn’t have been there and didn’t see the guy move the ball, I don’t — cool, I’ll go back to the tee. But I’m looking there, and I’m like that’s not right. The rules are there to protect the players, I thought.”

When reached for comment by GOLF.com, a PGA Tour spokesman said, “Stephen is not going to comment on it until he has a chance to talk to Harold about it.”

If the fan had moved the ball from its original position, Varner would have been allowed to move it back to its original location, under under Rule 9.6, which states: “If it is known or virtually certain that an outside influence (including another player in stroke play or another ball) lifted or moved a player’s ball: There is no penalty, and the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) (see Rule 14.2).”

Instead, Varner was hit with a penalty, and he double-bogeyed the hole. The incident, Varner said, motivated him in the third round.

Varner shot an eight-under 63 on Saturday, tying for the low round of the tournament. At 11 under for the week, Varner enters the final round with a one-shot lead over Shane Lowry, Eric van Rooyen and Patrick Cantlay.

“I would say I’m really good at putting things aside, but I did not put that aside,” Varner said. “I was very not happy how it panned out, but it was great for me. I just wanted to execute and just respond to like a situation to where I didn’t have any control over it. I could have hit a better shot, but I didn’t really like how it went down.

“You know, it was good for me because I was very irate till I got to the golf course today.”

The 2022 RBC Heritage concludes on Sunday with the final round at Harbour Town. You can find full tee times for the final round at the bottom of this post.

No one took advantage of Moving Day as well as Harold Varner III, and he’ll be rewarded with the final tee time of the day as a result. Varner’s third-round 63 ties the low round of the tournament, and vaulted him 22 spots up the leaderboard. He’ll be joined in the 1:50 p.m. ET pairing by major-winner Shane Lowry, who shot a third-round 65 as he searches for his first victory since the 2019 Open Championship.

The penultimate pairing features Erik van Rooyen, who shot his second-consecutive 67 on Saturday, and Patrick Cantlay, who is looking for his first win of the 2021-22 campaign. Jordan Spieth will tee off at 1 p.m. ET after a disastrous missed putt at the 18th on Saturday dropped him down the leaderboard. He will be joined by Joel Dahmen.

Jordan Spieth took full advantage of Moving Day at the RBC Heritage — until he got to the final hole.

Standing on the 18th green, he was four under for the round, and his nine-under total put him just two shots behind the leaders. Better yet, Spieth had a birdie putt from just under 12 feet at the par-4 finisher to cut the lead to one heading into the final round.

Unfortunately, his birdie putt just missed on the low side, burning the edge for what would have been Spieth’s fourth birdie of the day. The ball came to rest 18 inches beyond the hole, and all he needed was to tap in for par to put the finishing touches on an excellent Saturday in Hilton Head.

He drew the putter blade back while balancing on one foot and wacked his ball at the hole. The ball horseshoed around the cup and stubbornly stayed above ground.

"OH NO.

“Oh no!” CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz shouted. “Holy smokes!”

Spieth tapped in his bogey putt and stared into the distance in disbelief.

“What the heck?” added Nick Faldo. “You cannot believe that.”

The miss dropped Spieth to eight under for the tournament, and three shots off Harold Varner III’s 11-under lead heading into Sunday.

“Who knows,” Nantz said. “It could be the difference between finishing second and being in a playoff. Who knows.”

This marks the second time in three weeks at golf fans have watched Spieth get a little yippy around the hole. Two weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open, Spieth three-putted from just over 3 feet from the cup.

Let’s hope this isn’t the beginning of a worrying trend for the three-time major winner.
