One of golf’s busiest weekends has come and gone, and after four rounds of play, we’ve finally crowned a winner at the 2022 John Deere Classic. The quietest of the three golf events this weekend (next to the second LIV Golf Invitational and the Irish Open) produced a second-time PGA Tour winner and plenty of drama down the stretch. Below, find everything you need to know about the 2022 John Deere.

Who won: J.T. Poston (Two-under 69; 21-under)

How it happened: Poston entered the day with the 54-hole lead and never looked back, delivering a two-under 69 to close out a 21-under performance for his second-ever PGA Tour victory. With a three-stroke lead heading up to the 72nd hole, Poston delivered like he had all week at TPC Deere Run, zipping his final approach well clear of the water and onto the putting surface. With four putts to nab a victory, Poston needed only two, tapping in for par to close out a three-stroke win.

The other winners: Of course, Poston was one of three big winners from the world of golf this weekend. He was joined by Branden Grace (LIV) and Adrian Meronk (DP World Tour). While Emiliano Grillo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (T2) weren’t winners, they also found their way into the Open Championship (alongside Poson) via their performances on Sunday.

Ticket to The Open: secured.

J.T. Poston earns his second PGA Tour title at the John Deere Classic at 21-under par. pic.twitter.com/KnlPE7d8Z3
— GOLF.com (@GOLF_com) July 3, 2022

Why it matters: It’s easy to forget — given the JDC’s comparatively weak field — that the winner of this week’s event receives an invitation to the 2023 Masters (like all other PGA Tour winners in 2022). But that’s likely one of the first things on Poston’s mind this evening. Poston, 29, has played in only one other Masters — a missed cut in November 2020 — and in 2023, he will get the opportunity to reach the weekend in front of a true Masters crowd.

Best celebration: Poston’s fiancee, Kelly, wasted no time getting into the winner’s circle to celebrate alongside her soon-to-be husband, sharing an emotional moment together on the 18th green.

“I think I honestly was more nervous,” Kelly said afterward. “I wasn’t there for the first win so this was so special for me. I’m so proud of him.”

Best meltdown: As a general rule, three-putt pars are frustrating. Three-putt pars while you’re in contention in an event that could alter the trajectory of your season? Now that’s downright maddening.

Or at least, Dylan Wu thinks as much. After a three-putt par on the par-5 10th on Sunday, Wu had one of the meltdowns of the year on the PGA Tour, a 40-second long diatribe that included a … rather scathing analysis of his performance for the week.

It sure wasn’t pretty, but it was certainly worth a laugh, and for that, we’re grateful.

Notables: Emiliano Grillo finished T2, falling just short of his first PGA Tour victory in seven years at the JD. Cam Davis finished T8. Christiaan Bezuidenhout finished T2. Maverick McNealy nabbed his first top-15 since the Genesis Invitational in February. Scott Stallings delivered an underwhelming final round to fall four shots back in his T4 finish. Sahith Theegala (T16) couldn’t overcome a weak opening round to recover from last weekend’s devastating loss at the Travelers, but still nabbed a top-20 finish.

Up next: A rare PGA Tour doubleheader between two co-sanctioned events: the Barbasol Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open (where our own Sean Zak will be on the bag for Joel Dahmen).

Of course, none of us would be here right now had Poston not hooked his tee shot on the 516-yard par-5. With four holes to play, he held a four-shot lead over four players. Then, after an awkward follow-through from Poston, his ball took four bounces, the first bounce coming about 10 yards ahead of a white out-of-bounds stake, the last bounce appearing to jump ever so slightly to the left. He hit a provisional.

Some 260 yards away, his first shot was inches to the left of a few cables, and even closer than that to a string, which officials had strung from two O.B. stakes about 30 yards apart and would be used to determine whether Poston’s ball was in or out. All ball and string needed to do was touch. If they didn’t, Poston would have to play his provisional and take a two-shot penalty.

“It’s really close,” Poston said as he stood over his ball. He stepped back to see if the string was as straight as it could be. He shrugged his hands.

“It looks like it might be out, but I don’t know what part of it is touching if it’s like sitting down, level with the ball,” Poston said.

At this point, an official came over, and he placed a piece of paper between the string and the ball, much like an NFL referee when measuring a tight first-down call. Poston took off his hat and wiped his forehead, much like an NFL coach.

“I don’t think any part of the ball is touching that, J.T.” the official said. “You agree?”

“I mean, I know it’s close,” Poston said. “I feel like it’s … if it’s out of bounds, I want to be sure.”

“I wonder if the string’s all the way down, like ball level,” Flener said.

“It’s supposed to be ground level at the base of this stake,” the official said.

Poston and the official squatted over the ball, and the official again put the piece of paper between the ball and the string. Still a gap.

“That’s why I’m trying to use the paper,” the official said.

Here, Poston gestured with his fingers to show the distance, and the official motioned for another official to look. Same view.

“You think it’s out?” Poston said.

“Yeah,” the official said.

“All right,” Poston said, and he hit his provisional and double-bogeyed the hole.

From there, Poston bogeyed the 16th, too, and he eventually fell to Seamus Power in a six-hole playoff.

That close. And yet that far.

“I mean, that’s a hole where if you just get it in the fairway, almost everybody’s making birdie,” Poston said afterward of the 15th. “It’s a little bit of an awkward tee shot having to hit kind of a high fade. I like to draw the ball a little bit, so it’s definitely an uncomfortable one for me, but I just put an awful swing on it. I double-crossed it and it was out of bounds by half an inch or an inch or so.”

Cameron Davis, JT Poston and Sergio Garcia set the stage for a red-hot Sunday afternoon at the Sanderson Farms Championship, but the trio is playing for plenty more than bragging rights. Here’s what you need to know about the purse at the Country Club of Jackson, including payout information and winner’s share.

Sanderson Farms Championship Preview

Davis, Poston and Garcia are tied for the lead at 14 under heading into the final round on Sunday after an action-filled moving day in Mississippi. Davis — who vaulted himself into the final pairing on Sunday with a third-round 63 — saw an improvement of 10 strokes on his score from Friday to Saturday. The 25-year-old Australian is searching for his first-ever PGA Tour victory on Sunday, looking to join Poston with one career win.

Sergio, on the other hand, is looking to grab career win number 36 with his eyes closed, literally. The 40-year-old Spaniard admitted earlier this week that he has been closing his eyes at impact while putting for several years. Coincidentally, Garcia is in pursuit of his first win on North American soil since the Masters in 2017. We’ll let you determine whether the relationship is correlation or causation, but a win on Sunday would give Garcia his first professional win of any kind since the KLM Open a year ago.

Below is the payout information and winner’s share for the Sanderson Farms’ $6.6 million purse; you can catch all the action Sunday on Golf Channel beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET.

He hit a shot backward.

He hit a shot off a tree branch that then landed pin high.

He played two rounds at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot. He didn’t make the cut.

Poston had himself a day, too.

He was a part of the second group out during the first round, shot a one-over 71 and went to the range in the early afternoon. He hit some balls. His 9-iron hit a rock, and it kicked up and hit him in the left eye. According to Golf Digest, Poston went to the medical tent and had his eye cleaned up, and he was later told by a specialist he had scratched his cornea.

My vision has improved even in the last 24 hours so was able to give it a go today despite still a little blurred vision in my left eye.
“Immediately my vision was blurred and still hasn’t gotten back to 100%. Overall nothing permanent just needs time to heal,” Poston wrote on Twitter.

On Thursday night, he posted a selfie on Twitter that showed his left eye — and a good part of his head — completely bandaged. He said his vision was still blurred but had improved throughout the day. He decided to play Friday afternoon.

“Unfortunate the timing of everything fortunate to at least have a chance to play today after lookin like this yesterday afternoon,” Poston wrote under the selfie.

With essentially one eye, he shot a 12-over 82 during the second round.

He also hit one of his shots with one arm and backward.

Some impressive creativity from @JT_ThePostman. pic.twitter.com/icvv3pPsgN
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) September 18, 2020

On the 488-yard, par-4 16th, Poston hit his second shot up against a tree to the left of the green. He had 31 yards to the hole. Poston’s right-handed swing was blocked. His backward swing wasn’t. He turned both himself and his club around, and holding the iron with just his right arm, he chipped his ball to within about 25 feet. He would miss the par putt.

“This is one you don’t practice much. But you should practice the crazy ones,” analyst Peter Jacobsen said on the NBC broadcast. “That’s pretty good.”

What a bounce pic.twitter.com/h0LAALvuJr
— Oma Golf (@oma_golf) September 20, 2020

He hit another one of his shots off a tree — and onto a green.

On the 148-yard, par-3 7th (Poston started on the back nine), Poston hit his tee shot left. Very left. He lowered his arms in disgust, turned to his right and didn’t look.

His ball hit a tree and dropped 15 feet from the hole.

“That might be the worst shot he ever hit with a 9-iron and he has 10 or 12 feet for birdie,” analyst Paul Azinger said on the broadcast. “What a break.”

“That is just dead over there, caroms to the right and far enough to get himself right on the edge,” play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks said.

“Imagine the shock when he saw that ball leave towards that tree and the shock when it came out,” Azinger added.

Poston missed the birdie putt and settled for par.

“He shouldn’t be too upset, should he, David?” said Hicks, talking to analyst David Feherty. “Can’t be too upset. You’re not allowed to. Golf gods don’t like like, no one likes it, your playing competitors. Stop whining and tap in for your par — you’re lucky.”
