As Jordan Spieth has come in and out of the wilderness in recent years, his swing seemingly has been a perpetual work in progress. We know this because, way more than most players of his ilk, Spieth lets us into the game-improvement tent, chronicling his process with generous, often fascinating, detail.

Take the week before the 2021 Masters, at the Valero Texas Open, where Spieth shot a tidy third-round 67; this was a day before he went on to win by two for his first Tour title since 2017. Spieth said many interesting things about his swing after that round — that he was trying to get “shallower transitionally;” that he thinks about “six different things” during his move; that he’s “trying to go back in time structurally to a place that I’ve been.”

But the most revealing insight was this: Spieth said he was trying to find a “swing feel that’s kind of like an artistic motion, like almost I can see it happening from behind me as I’m feeling it.” His description sounded like a scene from an M. Night Shyamalan film, but what he was saying was, on one level, actually quite simple: Be a kid again. Don’t overthink things. Trust your God-given talents and hit the shot that is required.

If you were watching the golf Sunday — the AT&T Byron Nelson live from TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, near Dallas — you were no doubt intrigued to see how Spieth would respond to the pressure of trying to win in front of his boisterous home crowd. Spieth’s game is on much more solid footing than it was a year or two ago, but he is still one of the game’s great high-wire acts.

On Sunday, the par-3 17th at Craig Ranch was playing all of 134 yards; there aren’t many shorter holes on the PGA Tour. When Spieth arrived on the tee, he was just one back of K.H. Lee. A birdie at 17 would go a long way, especially with a reachable par-5 ahead at 18.

There was one problem: 134 is an “awful number” for Spieth, he said after the round. A dreaded in-betweener distance. Time to get creative.

CBS didn’t show a tight shot of Spieth’s ball on the tee, but if you were listening closely, you heard on-course reporter Dottie Pepper note that Spieth didn’t use a tee, instead placing his ball on the tightly mown Zoysia turf. Spieth never explained why he went sans tee, but presumably he felt trapping the ball would help him execute the “chippy draw” he had in his mind’s eye.

“Not in my repertoire for a long time,” he later said of the shot choice. “And I haven’t wanted to hit it under pressure either, even last year. So today I wanted to kind of hood a pitching wedge and I said, You know, I’m going to trust this, I’m going to learn from this shot and I’m going to take seven, eight yards and draw a 9-iron without it crossing over left of the pin. That’s just a shot that I just haven’t had and I just hit maybe my best shot of the day into there.”

The ball stopped 9 feet under the hole. If you were watching the telecast, the shot looked like just another stellar short iron, but if you listened to Spieth afterward, the swing clearly meant so much more to him.

Spieth missed the putt on the low side — it never had a chance — but he wasn’t dead yet. An eagle at the last, where Lee had made birdie, would force a playoff. After flushing his drive, Spieth had 236 left. With the wind blowing into him, he was facing another in-betweener. Hybrid wasn’t enough so Spieth elected 3-wood with the aim of hitting a “30-yard-high slice.” (You’ve got that shot, right?) The ball soared into the cloudless Texas sky, bending left to right, before touching down on the edge of the green. One hop forward and Spieth is putting, maybe from 20 feet, for his 3. But the ball grabbed instead, leaving him a straightforward chip, which he would not convert.

As at 17, Spieth’s shot at the closer looked really good but not OMG! great. Neither shot won him the tournament. Neither shot will land in any 2021-22 PGA Tour highlight mashups. But to Spieth, they were breakthroughs. Milestones, even.

“It’s like being able to kind of sit here and play these back-to-back crazy shots and feel comfortable doing so means it’s really close,” he said Sunday evening after his solo second, 25-under finish. “I don’t feel like I have to go change much, I just feel like I’m doing the right things. My rehearsal is not exactly what I’m trying to do, but it gets me closer to where I want to be.

“I feel like I’ve got every shot.”

Sounds like a winning formula.

You, the Jordan Spieth fan, may be worried. So we begin with the man himself saying everything’s gonna be OK.

“Sometimes we miss those,” he said.

And Spieth’s right. Sometimes they do. We all do. Only sometimes seems to be cropping more frequently of late when it comes missing putts from a distance that you and your golf buddies may otherwise pick up. At the Texas Open the week before the Masters, Spieth missed from 3 feet, then circled around the hole — and missed from 2. In his last start before this week, in what turned out to be a win at the RBC Heritage, he missed from 12 feet on 18 during the third round — then missed from 18 inches, and he revealed the day after that his wife, Amy, told him that he needed to count to five on the gimmes going forward.

So when Spieth again whiffed from short range, this time from 2 feet, 9 inches during Sunday’s final round of the Byron Nelson, you could make a case that these hiccups have become a bit of an issue. And if you want to play the woulda, coulda, shoulda game, there’s also the fact that Spieth finished just one shot behind eventual winner K.H. Lee, and yes, that missed 33-incher counted as one shot.

3-putt from under 7 feet.

Jordan Spieth moves from co-leader to 1 back. pic.twitter.com/AZJuP7Eqj4
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 15, 2022

But read his quote again — “sometimes we miss those” — and you can see Spieth’s thinking there. He’s rationalized it. If you’re concerned, he’s not. He even broke down what happened, so the misses aren’t necessarily a mystery to him.

“It was, I just got in my own head about the wind on that one.” he said. “I also missed a three-and-a-half-footer on 7 three days ago. So sometimes it’s tough; sometimes we miss those. Like I made 98 of them this week, and you miss two of them.

“But the one on 10 today was, I was pretty confident stroking the ball today. I was gaining, I probably gained strokes on the field on the greens, and really that’s what I’m looking to try and do each and every round. That one I just, the wind blew it off the right side of the hole, so I decided to play it right-center, and it — and then the wind stopped and the grain took it over to the right. It’s just tricky little pins.”

Spieth’s right about the Strokes Gained point — for the week, he picked 1.449, which was 36th in the field. This comes after finishing a stunning 65th at the RBC, at -2.545.

“I thought I made some really nice 5-foot sliders down the stretch,” he said. “I had one, after I blew one by five or six feet on 14, that’s a putt that is really nerve-racking because it’s a must-make and you don’t want to three-putt. And it was a little double-breaker, too, and I just, I cruised it right in the middle.

“And then made a decent 3-, 4-footer on 15. And then 16, I had one that broke about a cup from six or seven feet there. So those putts are really nice to make, those are ones that I just kind of I put good fluid stroke on, more judging line and speed, I was more outwardly focused than stroke focused. So that’s really important under pressure as I look into a major.”

Which is, in fact, next. The PGA Championship tees off Thursday at Southern Hills, and it’s the one major that’s escaped him to date.

With that, we’ll leave you with this, Spieth fan:

“So we’ll get on greens next week that remind me a lot of Colonial, bent grass, which is gradual slope where you don’t have a lot of tricks, which I think will be nice and I gained a lot of confidence on the greens this week,” he said.

No. 1 golfer? Maybe. No. 1 sexiest golfer? Definitely.

Both were K.H. Lee’s “goals.” The first was “to become the No. 1 golfer in the world.” But it was the second goal that gained him internet love after an eight-second video made the rounds a few years back.

“And the second is to become the No. 1 sexiest golfer in the world.”

And you and Lee laughed. But the funny thing is, he looked the part on Sunday.

First win as a father ❤️️ pic.twitter.com/IuHZ4sTD3b
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 15, 2022

There were his seven birdies. Sexy. There was his eagle that gave him a lead that he never relinquished. Sexy. There were his no bogies. Sexy. There was the repeat victory at the Byron Nelson, joining this list of those who have defended — Snead, Nicklaus and Watson. And now Lee. Sexy, sexy, sexy, sexy. The 30-year-old South Korean shot a nine-under 63 at TPC South Ranch during Sunday’s final round, and his 26-under total was one greater then hometown hero Jordan Spieth, and two more than Hideki Matsuyama and Sebastian Munoz.

Starting the day four shots out of the lead, Lee went to work quickly. He birdied 2 and 3. And 5 and 6, the latter of which broke a seven-way logjam at the top. Lee would quickly be rejoined back at the top, but the eagle, on the 551-yard, par-5 12th, after a second shot that dropped to 4 feet, gave him an insurmountable one-shot lead, and he built it to two with a birdie on the 13th.

From there, Lee parred the 492-yard, par-4 16th on a 6-foot putt. He parred the 134-yard, par-3 17th on an 11-foot putt. He two-putted from just off the green on the 513-yard, par-5 18th for a birdie. And he was your winner.

Sexy.

The takeaway

PGA week is here. And Spieth has lost to just one golfer — Lee — since the Masters. That’s some kind of momentum.

The leaderboard breakdown (Buckle up!)

— Sebastian Munoz leads by one shot entering the final round. He’s at 21-under, Jordan Spieth is at 20-under, Joaquin Niemann is at 19-under, and James Hahn and Justin Thomas are at 18-under.

— Munoz and Spieth each bogey the 425-yard, par-4 1st. The leaderboard now reads this way: Munoz is at 20-under, Thomas, Spieth and Niemann are at 19-under, and Hahn and K.H. Lee are at 18-under.

— Spieth birdies the 448-yard, par-4 2nd after hitting his second shot to 7 feet, and he moves into a share of the lead. Spieth and Munoz are at 20-under, Hahn, Thomas and Niemann are at 19-under, and Lee and Xander Schauffele are at 18-under.

— Hahn birdies the 426-yard, par-4 3rd after hitting his second shot to 5 feet, and he moves into a share of the lead. Hahn, Spieth and Munoz are at 20-under, Thomas, Lee and Niemann are at 19-under, and Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama are at 18-under.

— Spieth bogeys again, this time on the 3rd, and he falls out of the lead. Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Spieth, Thomas, Lee and Niemann are at 19-under, and Schauffele and Matsuyama are at 18-under.

— Schauffele birdies the 502-yard, par-4 13th — his seventh birdie of the day — and he moves into a share of the lead. Schauffele, Matsuyama, Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Thomas, Lee, Spieth and Niemann are at 19-under, and seven players are at 18-under.

— Thomas birdies the 577-yard, par-5 5th, and he, too, moves into a share of the lead. Thomas, Schauffele, Matsuyama, Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Lee, Spieth and Niemann are at 19-under, and seven players are at 18-under.

— Lee birdies the 5th, too, and he, too, is a leader. Lee, Thomas, Schauffele, Matsuyama, Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Spieth and Niemann are at 19-under, and seven players are at 18-under.

— Spieth’s up-and-down round continues, as he birdies the 5th, and seven players are tied for the lead. Spieth, Lee, Thomas, Schauffele, Matsuyama, Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Niemann, Davis Riley and Ryan Palmer are at 19-under, and six players are at 18-under.

— Lee birdies the 341-yard, par-4 6th, and he takes the solo lead. He’s at 21-under, Spieth, Thomas, Schauffele, Matsuyama, Munoz and Hahn are at 20-under, Niemann, Riley and Palmer are at 19-under, and six players are at 18-under.

— As expected, Lee is joined at the top, when Schauffele birdies the 309-yard, par-4 14th — his ninth birdie of the day. Lee and Schauffele are at 21-under, Hahn, Matsuyama, Palmer, Thomas, Munoz and Spieth are at 20-under, and Riley, Niemann and Charl Schwartzel are at 19-under.

— Hahn also birdies the 6th, and it’s now a three-way tie. Hahn, Lee and Schauffele are at 21-under, Matsuyama, Palmer, Thomas, Munoz and Spieth are at 20-under, and Riley, Niemann and Schwartzel are at 19-under.

Spieth and Munoz will be two of the leaders in the final pairing on Sunday, alongside Joaquin Niemann, the 23-year-old Chilean seeing a career ascension of his own. The trio will look to hold off a group of chasing players including Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele and, of course, Scottie Scheffler. Irrespective of the winner, Sunday will be the final chance for fans to watch players ahead of this year’s PGA Championship, and could give some clues as to whose game is trending in the right direction heading into Southern Hills.

Jordan Spieth is … back?! At the 54-hole mark, golf’s favorite Texan has launched himself firmly into contention at the Byron Nelson, taking advantage of a de facto home game in pursuit of his third win in the past 14 months, and second on Texas soil. Spieth (20-under) trails only Sebastion Munoz (21-under) heading into Sunday’s final round after a third-round 64 that featured a stunning nine birdies.

Trailing Spieth is a cast of big names headlined by Joaquin Niemann. The Genesis-winning Chilean (-19) is one back of Spieth and one ahead of James Hahn and Justin Thomas (18-under). Hahn shot a tournament-low 61 on Saturday, while Thomas fired a 64 for his third-consecutive round in the 60s.

Remember Dustin Johnson? Well, right on cue, he’s looking for a moving day charge at the 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson. The two-time major champ is closing in on 18 months removed from his last professional victory (which came at the November Masters), but enters the weekend at the Byron Nelson with an opportunity to get back in the winner’s circle. Johnson (-8) is some seven strokes off the lead set by Ryan Palmer, Sebastian Munoz and David Skinns, but with gettable moving day conditions at TPC Craig Ranch, Johnson can close the gap considerably before the day is done.

Jordan Spieth also enters Saturday in contention. Golf’s favorite Texan enters the weekend with a home-field advantage (and some houseguests) from his nearby Dallas, and is in a tie for eighth. A victory at the Byron Nelson would give Spieth his third in the last 15 months, and a sizable springboard heading into next week’s PGA Championship.

Chances are you don’t know Kyle Wilshire. It’s extremely plausible you’ve never seen a photo of him, and have no clue what his swing looks like. The photo atop this page isn’t even from this week’s event, the AT&T Byron Nelson, which he Monday qualified into.

None of that matters, though, because you might get to know Wilshire pretty well by the end of the weekend. He shot 65 Thursday, the best round of his life on the PGA Tour. When reporters on-site began diving into his story, they naturally ended up unearthing his incredible mentality, born out of … picking up trash.

What’s your road sort of been between when you first turned pro and this point?

The question was simple enough, but for Wilshire and all pros it’s often never an easy explanation. He’s spent time on the mini tours, played on PGA Tour Canada, even the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017.

But that was the highest pro golf status Wilshire would achieve. As he explained Thursday, some injuries kept him down in 2018. Poor play was the culprit in 2019. Covid-19 changed everything in 2020, including how Wilshire was spending his nights.

“So I had a job in 2020 in the evening times,” he said. “And I just always kind of told myself that you get out what you put in, and when I was doing my job it wasn’t fun, but I made the most of it and I kind of turned it into an opportunity to get better and just tried to have the right mindset.”

What was the job in 2020?

“I was actually a trash porter,” Wilshire said.

A trash porter, as in the person who an apartment complex employs to scrounge up the trash and recyclables left out by each tenant. Whilshire’s girlfriend’s apartment complex had a gig available in the evenings, between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. mostly, and he jumped at it.

“It wasn’t the most glamorous job, but I wouldn’t say it humbled me, but allowed me to work on my game,” Wilshire continued. “I did it for four months. It kept me in good shape and I just think it made me a little tougher. Made me just appreciate the opportunity to play.

“And then now when you’re out here it’s just not taking things for granted. When you play on the PGA Tour, you’re driving a brand new Cadillac this week. You’re eating the best food, it’s the best facilities. You got club companies taking care of you. I’ve never had that before.”

He’s not wrong about that. There are all kinds of perks waiting out on the PGA Tour every week. And they rarely extend elsewhere in the pro golf world, even to the Korn Ferry Tour. There’s free tickets to sporting events, discounts on spa treatment, mental health services, an incredible retirement plan, you name it. Not to mention simply playing for $8-10 million purses most weeks of the year.

Wilshire currently doesn’t have status anywhere, and even played in a mini tour event last week in Oklahoma. He Monday qualified into the Bermuda Butterfield Championship last fall, but finished T62 for a $14,365 payout. This week could be a whole lot different. Our man has a long way to go, but starts his second round within shouting distance of the lead. It sounds like he’s trying to soak up as much of the experience as he can, and keep that putter hot as can be. He finished fourth in Strokes Gained: Putting during round one, rattling off eight birdies in the process.

“I’m just trying to roll it, you know,” he said. “See what happens. The opportunity is right in front of me, so I’m excited.”

Sebastian Munoz’s imagination was being boxed in by a line.

Thursday was his masterpiece. Nine birdies. Two eagles. One bogey — that was followed by a 10-under-over-10-holes finishing kick during Thursday’s first round of the Byron Nelson. A 12-under 60 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, played about a half-hour east of where Munoz went to college, at North Texas. And while we know the answer to the question of how he felt Thursday compared to other rounds in his seven-year professional career — breaking: 12-under 60s do NOT feel bad! — his answer gives us a bit of a portrait of this artist.

“It’s a great feeling whenever everything is clicking, hitting the tee shots, ball is coming out in the window that you imagined, the putts, that you’re reading good the putts,” he said. “The speed. When everything is going, it’s just stay out of the way and just kind of let it happen. So that’s what I did. I mean, I had a tough putt on 12 for eagle, and like I was thinking like, it’s OK if I don’t make this one. Then it was like, I know I can make it; just kind of stay in it; trust what you’re doing; let’s keep it going. I made it.

“And then on 13, looked like it was just a little long. Yeah, coming in it was a great stretch and really happy.”

“Do you think less or more?” a reporter followed up with.

“No, way less,” he said. “Way less, yeah.”

Look at some of those words above. Imagined. Let it happen. The 29-year-old from Colombia plays on feel. And maybe nowhere was he feeling it less, he believed, than with his putter.

Munoz can knock it around fine. The 29-year-old from Colombia can flush it with the best of them — during the Byron Nelson first round, he gained a whopping 10.205 strokes on the field. But then you get to his stats on the green, and you see what’s been holding him back. This year, he’s 180th (!) in Strokes Gained: Putting. Over the past three seasons, he’s been 80th, 94th and 101st.

Munoz can't miss 🕳

Another one for @JSMunozGolf to get to -11. pic.twitter.com/XyXdXSj2h2
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) May 12, 2022

Thursday? Third.

Munoz’s imagination, it turns out, was being boxed in by a line.

“I’m putting with the PLD Anser, no lines on it, just black,” he said. “I felt like it really helps me kind of free up my imagination. Sometimes the line doesn’t look good either left to right or right to left, so not having the line give me a little more freedom and more of a putt instead of trying to make a perfect stroke.

“I feel like that has really helped me out this week.”

Can it continue? Who’s to say? Putting is a fickle thing. Five times on Thursday, he made putts of over 10 feet, and those could go left, right, short or long on Friday.

Or not.

“Today, I don’t know,” Munoz said. “I just kind of kept it going and I just wanted to get more looks, more looks and more chances, and I just kind of went crazy with it.”

When you talk about modern golf in Texas, one name rises above the rest: Jordan Spieth. The three-time major champion and Dallas native has wowed crowds across the PGA Tour since his debut several years ago. But a new Texan is pushing his way to the top: Scottie Scheffler.

The World No. 1 and newly minted Masters champion also grew up in Texas, and with four recent wins he’s threatening to take over as the state’s favorite golfer. Appropriately, at this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson in Dallas, the two are paired together for the first two rounds.

On Thursday they got to sleep in and tee off in the afternoon. But for Friday’s second round, Spieth and Scheffler will get their rounds started early.
