It’s U.S. Open week and the excitement couldn’t be much higher. With a loaded field, exciting storylines, and of course, an all-time venue, there’s plenty to look forward to from the week at Winged Foot Golf Club.
Can Gary Woodland, last year’s emotional U.S. Open winner, claim a second-consecutive national championship? And how about Collin Morikawa, can the only major winner to-date in 2020 continue his meteoric ascension and make it two in a row at the Open? Tiger Woods is back in action, sporting a new putter and a brand-new grip (again). And then there’s the previous major champions — Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, et. al — who face a unique opportunity to return to the limelight at Winged Foot West.
But perhaps the most intriguing story of the week is the golf course: Winged Foot’s famed West Course, hosting its sixth U.S. Open just three years after the completion of a historic restoration. Winged Foot, which opened way back in 1923, is an all-time design from famed architect A.W. Tillinghast. But the Great Depression (yes, the club has been around that long) and years of slightly altered upkeep led to shrinking greens and overgrown trees that weren’t included in the initial design.
In 2016, the course began a two-year restoration by architect Gil Hanse with the aim of returning Winged Foot to its original glory. This year, golf fans around the world will grab a glimpse of just how successful it was.
Where is Winged Foot Golf Club?
So, where exactly is this famed golf Mecca? Winged Foot Golf Club is located in Mamaroneck, N.Y., part of Westchester County. Westchester is considered by many to be the northernmost part of the New York metro area, and many of the club’s members claim New York City as their place of work or residence.
