The 2020 FedEx Cup Playoffs officially kick off Thursday with the opening round of the Northern Trust. Here’s what you need to know to watch the first round at TPC Boston.
Previewing Northern Trust Round 1
Tiger Woods has only made two PGA Tour starts since February, but this week he makes his third, and the 15-time major champion has plenty on the line. Having played so little, Tiger’s FedEx Cup ranking to start the playoffs is not as strong as he would have hoped. Even with his win at the Zozo Championship in October, he sits at 49th.
Tiger tees off early on Thursday, at 8:37 a.m. ET, and he’ll need to play well enough to stay within the Top 70 to earn a spot in next week’s BMW Championship and continue the playoff push.
The man currently at the top of the standings is Justin Thomas. As is tradition at the Northern Trust, Thomas will play the first round alongside the two players just beneath him in the standings, No. 2 Collin Morikawa and No. 3 Webb Simpson. Morikawa, who is making his first start since winning the PGA Championship, arguably represents Thomas’ greatest threat in the playoffs. They begin their opening rounds at 8:26 a.m. ET on Thursday.
