Rickie Fowler has been fighting to get back in the winner’s circle for a long time now. The five-time PGA Tour winner last captured a victory in February of 2019 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Things got ugly after that, with the popular pro falling to 128th in the Official World Golf Ranking on two occasions, most recently this month after a missed cut at the Shriners Children’s Open to start his season. But things got interesting last week.

Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Rickie Fowler of the United States prepare to tee off on the 16th tee during the first round of the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on August 10, 2017 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

At the CJ Cup in Las Vegas, Fowler charged out of the gates with an opening-round 66, and battled for the lead all weekend long. Unfortunately for Rickie, he ran into another accomplished pro making a comeback of his own, Rory McIlroy, who vaulted ahead on Sunday to win by three.

Still, the T3 finish was Fowler’s best result in years, and it came against a high-powered field. Now ranked a more respectable 82nd, Fowler has a another chance to make the final step to title town at this week’s Zozo Championship.

This year’s Zozo is heading back to Japan after a year in the U.S. due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Fowler will have to navigate a tough field if he wants to win, but not as tough as last week’s. Despite that, Fowler is far from the favorite to win the Zozo. BetMGM has him at +2500 to pull off the victory, which puts him at T6 for the best odds.

The favorite? That would be your gold medal champion and U.S. Ryder Cup star Xander Schuaffele, who comes it at +600.
