There’s a tricky moment at any great party where the fun approaches the line of decorum. Who will cross the line? Will we all cross it? Will we regret it tomorrow if we do? According to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, the line was crossed at the biggest party in golf this year.

Monahan spoke with BBC Sport this month and made clear he was not a fan of what went down at TPC Scottsdale at the WM Phoenix Open in February. “It’s never acceptable to be throwing water and beer bottles — we saw it a few times that weekend — and it’s going to be addressed,” Monahan said.

For those unsure of what Monahan is speaking to, the party began slowly, with no aces recorded on the raucous 16th hole through the week’s first two rounds. But Saturday has long been a different beast. The event has often set and re-set attendance records for PGA Tour events on that day over the years. When Sam Ryder made an ace Saturday afternoon, the jam-packed stadium let out a roar, and soon after let all the beers out of their hands.

🗣 ACE ON 16 🗣

What a place for @SamRyderSU's first ace on TOUR! pic.twitter.com/5AemLzhVG2
— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) February 12, 2022

Absolute pandemonium.

But did it cross the line? Where was the line? Were fans told they could not recreate what happened when Tiger Woods made a famous ace on that hole 25 years ago?

Monahan admitted to all the circumstances that made such an event happen: Pent up demand for an ace on that hole (it hadn’t witnessed one since 2015); the nature of the pandemic keeping people from communal scenes like that; the inherent history of the 16th hole and the nature of what was built up surrounding it. It wasn’t necessarily a surprise. But a key point is that it didn’t quite stop.

The next day, Carlos Ortiz made an ace, incurring a similar reaction from the fans, and another delay for clean-up on the green. What’s more, according to the report, Ortiz was hit by one of the projectile pops. Later on, when Justin Thomas chipped in for birdie, and more beer took to the sky, many people determined that, perhaps the line has been crossed a few too many times.

But wait, there’s more!

Also on Sunday, a scene unlike any the golf world had witnessed before. A day earlier, Dahmen had joked if his tweet gets enough engagement, Higgs would take off his shirt on the 16th green. As you may already know, exactly that happened. Higgs flashed the crowd on repeat! Dahmen ripped off his shirt and twirled it around over his head! Fans went berserk.

But did it cross the line?

“Harry and Joel did get carried away but it’s the atmosphere we’ve created,” Monahan continued. “We’ve got to recognize that’s something we helped to build and when you get situations that need to be addressed, they get addressed.”

Monahan did not go into detail about ‘addressing’ it would look like. But rumors circled on the PGA Tour the following week that Higgs and Dahmen were both in line to earn fines from the PGA Tour.

It all begs the question, How do you maintain the biggest party in golf without it going too far? The biggest attendance annually on the PGA Tour is bound to include some fans with pent up energy, motivation, excitement, etc. A gladiatorial scene with an amphitheater of sun-kissed, boozed-up golf lovers are going to react when they see an ace. And one helluva precedent has been set.

A lot of it, many players have argued, is good for golf. Days later, at the Genesis Invitational, Rory McIlroy discussed the scene from his perspective.

“I saw sort of everything that happened. Phoenix is fun, it’s awesome. I think it’s a novelty on Tour. I certainly wouldn’t want every week on Tour to be like that, but I think these one-off events where that can happen I think is good for the game. I think it encourages people from different walks of life to get interested in the game of golf, to feel like it’s not as intimidating.

“So in that respect I think there are parts of it that are really good and I think it’s a good look for the game of golf to sort of move with the modern times in the 21st century, but there’s a certain line there to be — yeah, just to sort of walk that line between something that is progressive but also doesn’t endanger players, endanger fans, endanger volunteers and I think that was a line that was maybe crossed a couple of times last week. But whenever you get a bunch of people together there’s going to be things that happen and that’s just the nature of it. There’s certainly more pros than cons.”

Collin Morikawa felt similarly, saying that beer doesn’t need to fly every week, but that during a specific tournament, the excitement is worth the attention it drives to the game. “For one time a year, I think it’s fun.”

Yep, in the new year, the loudest tournament in golf , the Waste Management Phoenix Open, will also become the loudest concert in golf (sorry, Chainsmokers fans). The Phoenix Thunderbirds — the charitable organization behind the tournament — has committed to building a concert venue in golf’s most raucous environment.

The venue will be constructed as part of the larger grandstand seating on TPC Scottsdale’s famed 16th hole, where thousands of golf’s rowdiest (and well-lubricated) fans congregate each year, with a couple of country music’s biggest acts scheduled to do their thing on Feb. 5, the Saturday before the event.

“We will drop a stage in the middle of the fairway and Old Dominion will open up for Thomas Rhett,” tournament chairman Michael Golding told AZ Central.

The concert follows in the mold of the PGA Tour’s strategy at the Players Championship (and other high-end tour events). At the Players, tournament organizers have worked hard to expand the fan experience well beyond a golf tournament. The goal, for organizers and the tour, is to turn events into a one-stop shop for entertainment — helping to broaden the sport’s appeal and introduce golf to new demographics.

It’s a strategy that has worked in other sports, notably Formula 1, where fans generate millions in tourism revenue on trips to follow the sport to one of its few-dozen international outposts. At the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, in the fall, tickets sold out almost instantly, many with face values of $250 and up, while an influx of racing fans from out of state (and country) drove up hotel costs and snatched up reservations at local restaurants and events.

This is the sort of virtuous cycle the PGA Tour believes can be created with golf’s biggest events. The Phoenix Open is perhaps the best example of that success — a February Tour event that now draws many of the game’s best players and daily crowds, on some days, of more than 200,000.

There are, of course, serious obstacles in reaching that ultimate goal on two levels. Broadly, The tour’s oversaturated schedule and issues with its on-course product are sticking points. More narrowly, there’s the bad taste lingering among golf fans after a pre-Players Championship concert, in March 2020, became an Internet punchline for superspreader events. These are real issues, and in the likely event pandemic concerns press into February, they’re issues the PGA Tour will have to acknowledge. But it’s hard to criticize golf’s stakeholders for investing in the sport’s entertainment value, and harder still to argue their efforts in doing so are a bad idea.

Professional golf survived, and sometimes even thrived, during the strange year that was 2020. But despite this success, the lack of fans at some of the sport’s biggest events certainly took away an important element of the game — dealing with the nerves on the biggest stage.

How would the back nine at the PGA Championship have gone differently if there were fans? Would the roars at Augusta have propelled Dustin Johnson to an even bigger margin of victory? These questions are impossible to answer, but they are fair to ponder.

This week, golf will once again be missing some distinct energy where it is usually present. The Waste Management Phoenix Open — specifically at the famed 16th hole — is known for its raucous crowds. And while there are a limited number of fans in attendance this week, the atmosphere will be nothing like that of years past.

The lack of fans will make the 16th a little less spectacular this year, but it also might make the hole easier. At least, according to some data from stats guru Lou Stagner. In a tweet last year, Stagner put together some stats around the 16th at TPC Scottsdale compared to par-3s of similar length on the PGA Tour. His findings were fascinating.

Was listening to @johnmaginnes talk about #16 at Waste Management.

I was curious if performance was different there.

I grouped #16 into buckets by yardage it plays and compared to other par 3s of same distance.

Photo from https://t.co/HoAN8JVc3f pic.twitter.com/lZMohPpRMt
— Lou Stagner (Golf Stat Pro) (@LouStagner) January 9, 2020

As you can see in the tweet above, it is much harder to get the ball close to the hole at the 16th at the Waste Management than it is at holes of similar length on Tour. In fact, the numbers are fairly consistent across the board indicating that the 16th plays tougher than other par-3s.

The official scorecard yardage of No. 16 is 163 yards, so we will isolate those numbers, but that doesn’t mean the hole length won’t vary throughout the week. From the 161 to 170-yard range, players at the 16th typically hit the green at a lower clip, are further from the hole when they do hit the green and are further from the hole when they miss the green.

The biggest difference between No. 16 and other “normal” par-3s on Tour? There aren’t thousands of well-hydrated fans screaming at you on normal weeks. The 16th is more like playing in a football stadium than it is a golf hole — and it seems that those outside factors make a difference.

There are likely other variables in play that could account for the disparity in performance, but the grander stage at TPC Scottsdale is likely a determining factor.

This week, that stage won’t quite be so grand. Although the build still surrounds the hole, capacity will be limited. It will be interesting to see how performance is impacted now that the 16th is a little less hostile.

One of many moments that reduced him to tears came on his recent visit to the Phoenix Rescue Mission, an organization in the Arizona capital that offers shelter and support to men, women and children struggling with homelessness and addiction. “I couldn’t help it,” Woods says. “I just kind of lost it.”

Nor could he stop from snuffling earlier this summer when he rose to give a speech at a breakfast benefit for the Special Olympics Arizona. And don’t even get him started on his tour of a Boys and Girls Club in south Phoenix that offers a safe haven for kids with few other spots to turn.

“To see the obstacles some people are up against, and the positive impact you can have on their lives,” Woods says. “That’s when it really hits you … ”

Bottom line: He goes through a lot of Kleenex. He also hands out a lot of checks, adding to a tally that has been mounting for decades. All the money goes toward uplifting causes, and every cent of it comes courtesy of The Thunderbirds, the juggernaut of a charitable outfit that Woods has been part of since 2010.

Recognized around the Phoenix area as a brotherhood of softhearted movers and shakers, the all-volunteer Thunderbirds are known to golf fans across the country as the poohbahs behind the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the best-attended stop on the PGA Tour. Famed for its raucous atmosphere, the event is a week of orchestrated bedlam. But even in the madness, The Thunderbirds are impossible to miss. Dressed in their signature blue velvet tunics and silver concho belts, with their namesake Native American emblem — a thunderbird draped as a pendant around their necks — they fan out on the grounds, tending to a litany of logistics at a tournament they spend the whole year planning.

It’s no small task, with no small impact. In 2019 alone, the event raised $13.2 million for local charities, pushing the tournament’s all-time fundraising total to $147 million.

“Over the years, they’ve turned their tournament into a premier golf event,” says Shannon Clancy, associate executive director of St. Vincent de Paul, a nonprofit devoted to serving the poor that has received more than $1.2 million from The Thunderbirds. “But really what they’ve done is transform it into a tremendous force for good.”

It’s a fitting evolution for two Arizona institutions whose histories are tightly intertwined. The Thunderbirds were born in 1937 as a five-man committee charged with promoting the Valley of the Sun through sports. As their efforts expanded, so did their ranks. Each original member selected 10 recruits to create a roster of 55, the same number of active Thunderbirds that holds today. Then, as now, inductees were the cream of the community-minded crop. They included Bob Goldwater, an avid golfer and brother of five-term U.S. senator, Barry. Goldwater urged The Thunderbirds to host a golf tournament. The Phoenix Open, which had started in 1932, made a natural choice.

In its early decades, the venue toggled between the Phoenix Country Club and the Arizona Country Club, until 1987, when it moved to newly opened TPC Scottsdale, a project The Thunderbirds helped pay to complete. Replete with spacious corridors and sculpted amphitheaters, the course gave the tournament room for growth, which The Thunderbirds cultivated with their commitment and clout. The group’s membership is a high-desert who’s who, comprising the likes of Phoenix Suns owner Jerry Colangelo and Arizona governor Doug Ducey. Jim Nantz and Jack Nicklaus are honorary Thunderbirds, as were Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

For all the prominent figures in their midst, The Thunderbirds maintain a mostly understated profile. As with prestigious golf clubs, you don’t ask to join. You’re nominated, and your name is put to a closed-door vote. Most new Thunderbirds are chosen in their mid-to-late 30s. They remain active members until they turn 45, when they morph into life members, of which there are about 280. One measure of Thunderbird seniority and status is the number of silver and turquoise beads on their necklaces, each representing a charitable deed done. A Thunderbird whose necklace is bare is something like a young buck without antlers.

The group's membership is a who's who. Nicklaus is an honorary Thunderbird.

“You can always tell the newbies,” says Jerry Lewkowitz, 90, who became a Thunderbird in 1962 and remains a fixture at group meetings.

Once unadorned, Tim Woods’s necklace now hangs heavy with beads. His tournament responsibilities are weighty, too. He is the chairman of the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open (January 30 to February 2), a demanding role that grows near all-consuming as tournament week approaches, leaving Woods scant time for his paying gig in the insurance business. It’s okay, he says. Chopper pilots can handle pressure. So can most Thunderbirds, who self-select toward the Type A.

A defining trait of the organization is a culture of healthy competition. “There’s nothing I’d love more than to p–s off my tournament chair predecessor by raising more money than he did last year,” Woods says.

At this year’s event, expanded infrastructure, including new corporate boxes and blown-out concession areas, should help boost revenue. Every sponsorship deal sealed, every visor and vodka tonic sold, means more money toward worthy causes. Sometime after the final putt drops and the proceeds are tallied, The Thunderbirds will announce the sum and discuss the many lives that stand to benefit from it — the families without homes, the children needing health care, the services for seniors operating on a shoestring.

Tim Woods won’t be alone. There won’t be a dry eye in the house.

A whole new rules rollout, Tiger Woods’ 15th major title, two epic international events and so much more. Here’s a look back at some of the best moments of 2019.

Best of 2019: Amy Bockerstette drains the par of the year

On the day Amy Bockerstette silenced the loudest hole in golf, Joe Bockerstette was too focused on his daughter’s bunker play to be aware of the effect she was having.

As Amy sized up her second shot on the par-3 16th hole during a Waste Management Phoenix Open practice round earlier this year, Joe couldn’t help himself. He’s a warm and patient man, but after a single practice swing, he’d seen enough. He stopped parenting and started caddying.

“You need to take a harder swing,” he said. “The sand is fluffy!”

If Amy was rattled by the last-second encroachment, it didn’t show.

“I got this!” she yelled back, before delivering a short, punchy swing that splashed the ball out of the sand and over the edge of the bunker. The ball trundled onto the green, stopping 10 feet from the hole, its black Bridgestone logo specked with grains of white sand.

The crowd roared. Amy’s playing partners, including Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar, looked stunned. Joe exhaled for what felt like the first time in an hour.

In an instant, Amy’s star was born.

In the Down syndrome community, there’s a popular aphorism for new parents: “Welcome to Holland.” It’s a nod to Emily Perl Kingsley’s essay, which likens the birth of a developmentally disabled child to accidentally arriving in Holland after a long-awaited trip to Italy.

“After you’ve been there for a while and catch your breath, you look around and begin to notice that Holland has windmills and tulips. But if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn’t get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, lovely things about Holland.”

It’s a feeling etched into Joe Bockerstette’s memory. In October 1998, he and his wife Jenny found themselves in Holland, parents to a newborn girl with Down syndrome. They named her Amy. Silently, Joe was heartbroken. A lifelong athlete, he’d dreamt of edifying a father-daughter relationship through sports.

“One of my strongest feelings was grieving over ‘I’ll never get to experience those sports moments with her,’ to teach her, to root for her,” Joe said in a phone interview. “There wasn’t a lot of optimism out there about having a child with Down syndrome.”

Everything changed in 2010, when shortly after moving his family to Scottsdale, Joe attended a yard sale. He bought a 7-iron from a junior set, which inspired him to take Amy to a driving range.

“I came home and told my wife, ‘This kid can play golf!'” Joe said. “She just picked up a club and could hit.”

A decade later, Amy Bockerstette is a decorated golfer — a scholarship athlete on the golf team at Paradise Valley Community College in Scottsdale. And her caddie?

“We’re partners in her round, and trust me, I cost her more shots than she does with decisions I make,” Joe said, laughing. “I’m in the arena with my daughter playing competitive sports, it’s a dad’s dream.”

In January, Joe and Amy were preparing for a tournament when a representative from the PGA Tour called. The Tour wanted to surprise Amy during a practice round by having her play a hole with 2018 WMPO champion Gary Woodland.

On the morning of the surprise, Joe was restless. Amy would be playing the famed 16th hole — the so-called “loudest hole in golf” — without a warm-up or a warning.

Pressure? What pressure? As the crowd fell silent, Amy stepped on to the tee box and took a smooth, unfaltering swing that landed in the bunker left of the green. As she prepared for her next shot shot, the fans quieted again, which led to her gem of a bunker shot and a high-five from Woodland.

Over her 10-footer for par, Amy had to quiet herself. She found her line, rocked back her putter and drained it.

Joe yelled, Woodland screamed, and the loudest hole in golf did what it does best.

The video of Amy’s viral moment has been viewed 43 million times, making it the most-watched video in PGA Tour history. Her popularity multiplied again in June, when Woodland credited Amy with sparking his victory at the U.S. Open. Joe says she’s recognized in the street “almost daily,” while she and Woodland talk every few weeks.

Joe and Jenny are weary of amplifying their daughter’s fame. They prepare for the future during the school year while Amy plays golf, attends classes and works a part-time job at TJ Maxx. For now, their preparations have taken the form of the I Got This foundation, whose mission is to raise money for and awareness of the intellectually disabled community in golf.

Amy’s loved ones have a hard time comprehending her accomplishments and her newfound viral fame. Two decades ago, her father mourned the loss of her sports career. Today, he’s her caddie, playing partner and spokesman.

Life with Amy has rarely gone according to plan, but perhaps that’s why it’s gone so right.

“It’s a great lesson in not putting limitations on your child,” Joe said. “Amy’s opened up more opportunities than we could ever imagine. She’s changed our lives completely, and all for the better.”

1. The golf group everyone was talking about this week didn’t play on the PGA or European tours. President Trump was joined by Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus on Saturday at Trump National. I mean, imagine being the starter that had to call that group to the tee?! The most powerful man in the world playing with the two most powerful men in golf. There are a few caddies out there who I would love to speak with about these conversations…

2. No one has ever played the 16th hole at The Stadium Course better than Amy Bockerstette. Playing alongside Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar during Tuesday’s Phoenix Open practice round, Amy made a par that meant far more than your standard par. Amy is a Special Olympics athlete who is also the first golfer with Down Syndrome to receive a college scholarship.

This is the lone tournament that encourages a crowd atmosphere unlike any other stop on Tour. Seating at the fabled 16th hole is first come, first serve. Because of that, fans line up in the wee hours of the morning for prime positioning.

What happens when gates open is reminiscent to parents shopping for the “it” Christmas toy on Black Friday.

4. There was a lot of chatter regarding whether pros should have played in the European tour’s event in Saudi Arabia. For one unknown pro, it appears they ended up regretting their decision to play – but not for the reason you might be thinking. Spotted in a trash can was a snapped club along with several other irons. If this isn’t reassuring that golf is hard then I don’t know what is.

It was a bizarre situation that had social media buzzing bright and early on Saturday morning. Sergio reportedly made a mess of several greens out of anger, though we have yet to see any video footage. In this day and age, that’s remarkable.
