A winning feeling so nice, he had to do it twice (in two weeks!)

On Sunday in Detroit, Tony Finau shot a final-round 67 to clinch victory the Rocket Mortgage Classic, his second PGA Tour win in the last seven days. Finau, who finished 26-under, became the first winner in back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour since Brendon Todd in 2019.

It was perhaps fitting for Finau, whose prolific career has been stunted by his struggles getting over the hump, to see his career victory total double in the span of just one week. Those around the sport have long predicted that the victories would come in bunches for the Ryder Cupper once he broke through. Prior to last week’s win at the 3M Open, Finau had recorded 50 career top-10 finishes — a gargantuan sum — to only two wins.

“It means everything to me that my kids can watch me not only fail, but they watch me win as well,” Finau told CBS in an emotional interview after the win. “That’s what it takes to be a champion.”

Finau toppled the field on Sunday with his ninth consecutive round in the 60s, nabbing six birdies to only a single bogey. Including Sunday’s final round, he has now played his last 9 rounds at 49-under, with 55 birdies to only six bogeys. Despite entering the day tied with his final-round playing partner Taylor Pendrith atop the leaderboard, the Utah native hardly looked bothered. After four pars to start the day, a birdie on the par-5 4th hole vaulted him into a two-stroke lead he never looked back from.

After playoff wins in the 2018 Puerto Rico Open and 2021 Northern Trust, Finau has won his last two starts by a combined eight strokes, finally tapping into the preternatural ballstriking abilities that have made him a fixture atop the Official World Golf Ranking since he turned pro in 2015.

For Finau, though, how he won is ostensibly less important than the fact he won. After waking up on the morning of July 24 with only two professional wins, Finau has doubled that number to four … before August 1. Next up, the PGA Tour heads to Greensboro for the final event of the 2022 FedEx Cup regular season, the Wyndham Championship.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Round 4 Preview

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is almost over, and so to is the PGA Tour regular season, but there’s still plenty of excitement left to dish out, and it all begins on Sunday at Detroit Golf Club.

Tournaments

Heading into the finale of this low-scoring event, Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith are tied for the lead at 21 under, thanks to Saturday rounds of 65 and 66, respectively.

But they are not all alone on the leaderboard. Reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay is in the hunt and hungry for his first win of the season, while World No. 19 Cameron Young will begin the finale just four shots off the lead.

Featured Pairing for Rocket Mortgage Classic Round 4

With 18 holes to play at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, pre-tournament favorite Tony Finau is still very much the favorite to win. Finau shot a seven-under 65 in the third round in Detroit to reach 21 under, good enough for a share of the lead.

He’s tied with 36-hole leader Taylor Pendrith, who made a boatload of birdies against two bogeys to shoot 66.

Should Finau pull it out on Sunday, it will be his second PGA Tour win in a row following his victory last Sunday at the 3M Open. For Pendrith it would represent the very first win of his career. Finau and Pendrith will tee off in the final pairing Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

Seven days ago, Tony Finau was stuck in idle at two career PGA Tour wins to his name. By Sunday night, he may have doubled that number to four.

Beginning the third round of the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic one shot off the lead, the 32-year-old PGA Tour veteran came out charging on Saturday and never let up.

Accessories

He made birdies and the 2nd and 3rd holes, and added another back-to-back birdie stretch at Detroit Golf Club’s 7th and 8th holes to shoot a 32 on the front.

From the start, Finau’s second nine was as solid as his first. He pounded a 323-yard drive into the middle of the fairway at the par-4 10th, then drained an 8-footer for another birdie to reach 18 under.

Thirty-six hole leader Taylor Pendrith, who played alongside Finau in the third round, showed his first sign of cracking with a bogey at 9. Pendrith made another bogey at 13 to fall to 18 under, temporarily surrendering the lead when Finau birdied 14, and for a moment it looked like Finau might pull away and make Sunday’s finale far less interesting.

But Pendrith caught fire again, making three-straight birdies on holes 14-16 and adding another at 18 to shoot 66 and finish at 21 under. Finau nearly kept pace over the final stretch, sinking three birdies of his own to close out a third-round 65 and tied Pendrith for the lead.

It’s a very different situation that Finau found himself in on the eve of last week’s final round at the 3M Open. In that case, Finau trailed leader Scott Piercy by five shots. With little pressure and low expectations, Finau went out and shot a 67 while Piercy collapsed, allowing Finau to claim his third Tour win by a three-shot margin.

On Sunday at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, he’ll have to go face-to-face against Pendrith in the final pairing, with the brand of pre-tournament betting favorite weighing on his shoulders.

Additionally, he’ll have to fend off rising star Cameron Young and reigning Player of the Year Patrick Cantlay, who will begin the final round four and six shots back, respectively.

Look out: Tony Finau is on a roll right now on the PGA Tour. Fresh off a victory at the 3M Open, he’s looking to make it two straight at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Starting the second round tied for the lead, Finau fired a six-under 66 on Friday to continue cruising and give himself a prime opportunity to go back-to-back.

But if there’s one player who can stop Finau, it’s Taylor Pendrith. Pendrith also began Round 2 tied for the lead with Finau, but he shot a 65 on Friday, giving him a narrow one-shot lead heading into Saturday’s third round.

The second round of the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic is in the books, meaning the tournament is already at the halfway point. And with 36 holes left to play, there’s plenty of action left in store for the players jostling for a spot at the top of the leaderboard.

Here’s what you need to know from the second-round action in Detroit.

Tony Finau is still in the mix

After firing a first-round 64 to share the lead with Canadian Taylor Pendrith on Thursday, Tony Finau followed up with a six-under 66 — good enough to hang on to second place. But Pendrith’s 65 on Friday made him the solo leader, one shot ahead of Finau.

That means the two will play together in Saturday afternoon’s final pairing. On paper, Finau may have a bit of an edge in a head-to-head match. He’s seeking his fourth career win, and second consecutive victory, after last week’s triumph at the 3M Open. Pendrith, meanwhile, is playing only his first full season on the PGA Tour, and is still seeking his maiden victory.

Who else has a chance?

After Finau, Lee Hodges is the next-closest player to the lead, at 12 under overall. And there’s a significant number of familiar names within five shots of the lead, including Russell Henley, Adam Scott and Patrick Cantlay.

Two-time major winner Zach Johnson is six shots back at eight under overall.

Young players to watch

Sahith Theegala and Cameron Young are two young players whose names are becoming increasingly familiar to golf fans.

Theegala, 24, burst on the PGA Tour scene earlier this year when he nearly won the WM Phoenix Open. He’s since recorded four additional top-10 finishes, and, after rounds of 68-67 this week, he’s in contention yet again, five shots back in T7.

Cameron Young, 25, is another star in the making, with four runner-up finishes (one of which was at the Open Championship at St. Andrews) this season and six top tens.

Young’s second-round 63 tied the tournament record, and launched him 75 spots up the leaderboard into T4, four shots back.

Get ready, folks! It’s bound to be an exciting weekend in Detroit.

Previewing Rocket Mortgage Classic Round 3

Cameron Young is at it again.

The rising Tour star, who nearly pulled off a breakthrough win at the 2022 Open Championship earlier this month, fired an incredible nine-under 63 on Friday — the low round of the tournament so far — to shoot up the leaderboard and reach 10 under. That put him in the lead at the time, though the first-round co-leaders Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith had yet to tee off.

Once they did, they quickly passed Young on the leaderboard, with Finau shooting 66 to reach 14 under and Pendrith besting him by one to reach 15 under and take the 36-hole lead.

The second round of the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic begins Friday morning at Detroit Golf Club. Here’s what you need to know to watch Round 2 on TV or online.

Previewing Rocket Mortgage Classic Round 2

In what was a low-scoring opening round in Detroit, Tony Finau matched the lowest of the low, shooting an eight-under 64 to tie for the early lead. He’s joined on top by Canadian pro Taylor Pendrith, who drained nine birdies to go along with one bogey on Thursday. The pair are two shots clear of five players tied at six under.

Tournaments

For Finau, it’s familiar territory. Just last week, he captured his third-career PGA Tour win at the 3M Open in Minnesota. Now he’s got a legitimate shot at extremely rare back-to-back wins in consecutive weeks. Pendrith, on the other hand, has zero PGA Tour victories to his name, though he has won twice on the Canadian tour.

For Friday’s second round, Finau will tee off at 12:43 p.m. ET, while Pendrith will go out shortly thereafter at 1:38 p.m. ET.

The first round of the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic is in the books, and one of the game’s biggest stars shares the top spot on the leaderboard.

Here’s what you need to know from the first-round action in Detroit.

The leaders

On the heels of his third PGA Tour victory at last week’s 3M Open, Tony Finau stayed hot in the Motor City, firing a bogey-free, first-round 64 — eight under par — to share the top spot on the leaderboard with Canadian Taylor Pendrith.

Pendrith is in the midst of his first full PGA Tour season and is seeking his maiden PGA Tour victory. He’s had one top 10 thus far, at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The contenders

News

Despite Finau and Pendrith’s ultra-low opening scores, they share only a two-shot lead over their closest competitors. Five players are at six under after Round 1, including Webb Simpson and Cameron Champ.

Two-time major winner Zach Johnson is also in the mix at five under par, three shots off the lead.

The ace you have to see

Tour players have understandably high expectations when it comes to their ballstriking — it’s their job after all — but it’s always funny when a pro has a bad reaction to a shot and the ball actually ends up in a good place.

Thursday at Detroit Golf Club provided an extreme example of such perfectionism.

Mark Hubbard didn’t like his tee shot on the par-3 11th — so much so, in fact, that he dropped his club after impact, shoulders slumping. You can probably guess what happened next. Yep: the ball hit the front of the green, rolled out toward the hole, did a 360 spin and dropped in. An ace!

Never judge a book by its cover, folks.

Last week, Tony Finau captured his first win of the season and third of his career at the 3M Open in Minnesota. After one round at the Rocket Mortgage in Detroit, it appears Finau is angling for a Midwest two-fer.

Tournaments

The World No. 16 showed no sign of a hangover from his Sunday triumph in Thursday’s opening round, making a birdie at the first hole of the day and adding four more over his first nine alone to tie for the early lead.

Finau and playing partners Cam Davis and Nate Lashley had an early tee time for Round 1, so for Friday’s round they’ll get to sleep late and tee off in the afternoon.
