Kyle Berkshire does some pretty amazing things to the golf ball. The two-time World Long Drive champ routinely tops clubhead speeds of 150 mph and recently surpassed 233 mph of ball speed. Those numbers have made him the undisputed king of the World Long Drive scene.

But Kyle is also an avid golfer in his own right. One who was once ranked fourth in the state of Maryland as a junior golfer then went on to play college golf — and has eyes on trying to make pro starts in the future, too.

At the recent GOLF Magazine Top 100 Teachers Summit (which you can watch here) Berkshire spoke about some of the challenges he needs to navigate when he’s on the course imparting so much speed onto the ball. Mainly: he needs to learn to control the mind-boggling amount of spin he puts on the golf ball.

Kyle Berkshire's Foresight numbers with a wedge.

Almost 13,000 RPMs! pic.twitter.com/JHqzdLNqOW
— LKD (@LukeKerrDineen) November 12, 2021

But when he does that, Berkshire enjoys the best of both worlds: Hitting his irons longer than you could ever dream of. In a recent Instagram post, he shared his through the bag numbers for each of his clubs. They’re pretty astonishing.

Club

Yards

62 degree

100-110

58 degree

120-130

54 degree

130-140

PW

150-165

9-iron

170-185

8-iron

190-205

7-iron

205-220

6-iron

220-235

5-iron

235-250

4-iron

250-265

3-iron

265-280

2-iron

280-295

1-iron

300-315

“Play” driver

360-380

“Long” driver

380-400

So the next time you’re 200 yards out and wondering if a 4-iron can get there, just remember that Kyle Berkshire is hitting a smooth 8-iron from that distance.

It’s early morning in the desert in fall 2021, and Mesquite, Nev. is cold. The sky is draped in a carpet of blue, but the sun hasn’t quite peeked over the mountains in the distance. The resultant temperature is brisk, and the wind is gusting over the plain, dropping the air temperature considerably further.

Not that any of that matters to Bobby Peterson. Peterson is a large, broad man, and he’s rocking the same wraparound sunglasses, quarter-zip jacket and generally delighted temperament I’ve seen every day since I first stepped on-site in Mesquite.

Peterson is the de facto commissioner of the Pro Long Drivers Association, a player-run, player-funded long drive tour that launched its second-ever season last weekend. He’s something of a long drive expert, running his own shop in distance-building out of a warehouse in Newton Grove, N.C. Peterson’s One Stop Power Shop is frequented by what feels like half of the professional long drive circuit — and his name carries fierce loyalty among the constituency.

Peterson is a sharp businessman, which is why I’m wondering how he became the Pro Long Drivers Association’s foremost angel investor. In early 2020, when Golf Channel dropped its long-standing relationship with the sport, Bobby and a small group of pros got to work drawing up the bylaws of a new professional league that wasn’t reliant on outside money. Soon, the group had formed a new membership and entry fee-driven model.

Now, it’s late 2021, and the league is holding its first-ever World Championship with Bryson DeChambeau in the field. It’s all an impressive affair, but is it profitable?

Peterson shoots me a smile.

“If you take close care of your pennies, your dollars start to make sense,” he says.

Clearly, the dollars make some sense, because this past weekend, the PLDA returned for its second-ever season with its “Desert Launch” event, also held in Mesquite. Kyle Berkshire, the reigning world champion, kicked off the season with a win in the event.

The event marked the first of 11 for the circuit in 2021, which features tournaments in Japan, Denver and Ontario. The season will conclude with the PLDA World Championships held in Mesquite in early October.

Another significant development for long-drive diehards: Bryson DeChambeau has joined the league as “a part-owner” — ensuring his continued interest in the sport heading into the future. DeChambeau has been a longtime supporter of the sport on his social media feeds, which show him frequently hanging out with and seeking distance-boosting counsel from long drive professionals.

At the World Championships in September, Bryson was a key part in driving hundreds of thousands of impressions to the PLDA website and social media feeds. He made it into the quarterfinals of the championships, losing to eventual winner Kyle Berkshire.

But, he insisted, his entrance in the tournament wasn’t about winning, but rather about helping the struggling circuit find long-lasting success. With his ownership stake, the former major champ appears to be tying a chunk of his bank account to that claim.

“These guys all have families and lives and this is usually their hobby or second job,” DeChambeau told GOLF.com at the time. “They’re just trying to survive, a lot of them are, and I think they need to be getting support. Support from the world of golf, and support financially. This is the best way for me to do that. So why wouldn’t I? Why wouldn’t I do what I can to make this thing what it should be?”

Kyle Berkshire is long off the tee — like, really long. His personal best is a 492-yard nuke, and he’s the reigning World Long Drive champion. Oh, and his clubhead speed? Insanely fast. It’s consistently over 150 mph.

Berkshire’s power makes Bryson DeChambeau look like Corey Pavin. When his driver makes contact with the ball, it produces a sound like you’ve never heard before. Jaw-dropping is cliched, but Berkshire’s long ball acumen will — quite literally — make your jaw drop.

The 25-year-old didn’t become the longest hitter on the planet over night. It’s taken him years of dedication to the pursuit, and hard work with his instructor, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Bernie Najar. And now that he’s reached the pinnacle of the sport, Berkshire intends to stay — and inspire the next generation of long-drive competitors.

“I just want everyone to see that it’s possible,” Berkshire said. “Because if I can gain speed, then everybody else can gain speed as well. That’s my goal, to serve as inspiration for people to hit the ball further and just keep pushing their limits.”

Berkshire and Najar recently got together to recount that journey at the GOLF Top 100 Teachers Summit, and they shared some tips for up-and-comers looking to add some power to their games. Check out the exclusive video above to get some inspiration of your own.

It sounded like a fun idea on paper: Give two-time World Long Drive champion Kyle Berkshire a 2-iron and attempt to best him with driver in a long drive contest. What could possibly go wrong? During a recent trip to Austin, Texas, GOLF.com colleague Andrew Tursky and I watched on as Berkshire uncorked a tee shot with a custom Cobra King Forged Tec 1-iron that traveled over 300 yards.

“That’s nothing,” said his father Bill, a former Secret Service agent. “When he first got that club, I watched him hit it over 380 yards.”

A 380-yard 1-iron?! Tursky and I were toast — even if Berkshire was being kind and grabbing 2-iron for the competition. (It should be noted that Berkshire, thankfully, obliterated his 1-iron just moments before the competition.)

What we didn’t expect was an interesting turn of events that afforded us a glimmer of hope against the champ. Was it enough of an opening to wrest the crown away?

You’ll have to check out the video to find out.

During a recent video shoot in Austin, Texas, GOLF.com had the opportunity to do an equipment deep dive with two-time World Long Drive champion Kyle Berkshire. Here are 7 things that stood out from the conversation.

1. Mind the gaps

It’s important to possess a set of clubs with proper loft gaps.

              Jonathan Wall/GOLF.com

Even if you don’t have Kyle Berkshire’s speed, it’s important to possess a set of clubs with proper loft gaps. If the gaps are less than four degrees from one club to the next, it’s very likely you’ll wind up with clubs that go similar yardages — leaving you with a sizeable hole somewhere in the bag. Having to constantly step on a 6-iron or taking something off a 5-iron simply isn’t feasible for the average golfer.

The two-time World Long Drive champion still fiddles with the gapping on his setup, but thanks to a tip from four-time PGA Tour winner Camilo Villegas, he’s learned to stop fixating on the number stamped on the sole and concentrate on the specific iron loft that allows him to hit ideal yardages with every club in the bag.

“At my speed, gapping is a tremendous challenge,” Berkshire said. “We’ve stuck with a four-degree gapping throughout the bag, but I don’t look at my 9-iron as a 9-iron — I look at it as a 40-degree club. I learned this from [tour pro] Camilo Villegas about a year-and-a-half ago while playing at the Bear’s Club. I went through his bag and he showed me how his clubs were labeled with degrees, not the number of the iron, which is genius because you can have a strong or weak iron.”

If you know a good club-builder, it’s possible to have the lofts stamped on each head. But it’s very possible those lofts could change over time with wear and tear. It’s one of the reasons why golfers should get their lofts and lies checked at the start of each season to ensure the specs are still in good working order.

For those with a gapping issue, the fool-proof fix is to get with a certified club-fitter and conduct a full bag analysis. Let the expert take a closer look at your lofts and lies to determine if a club or two needs to be bent to fix a problem yardage.

2. Eight is great

We all have a favorite club in the bag we use for testing and practice sessions. It feels comfortable in our hands and tends to be a good barometer when trying to determine if that new set of irons is really worth four figures.

For Kyle Berkshire, the club he uses for testing and potential swing changes is a mid-iron.

“I like the 8-iron because it’s a pretty middle-of-the-road club for my bag,” Berkshire said. “I’ve had to bend that club back and forth more times than I count because I’m using it a lot, and I’m normally swinging the club at 110 mph.”

3. Step it up

Kyle Berkshire hard steps his irons at least once — sometimes twice.

              Jonathan Wall/GOLF.com

If you want to read up on the differences between hard and soft stepping an iron or wedge, check out this link. For those who don’t have the time, just know that hard stepping makes the shaft firmer, reduces spin and lowers launch.

If you’re Kyle Berkshire, it’s one of the ways you make a set of irons playable.

But what happens when even a single hard step and a beefy set of True Temper Dynamic Gold X7 shafts — arguably the stiffest steel product on the market — fail to do the trick? You do a “double hard step,” which is almost underheard of in the industry. (Don’t try this at home, kids.)

“We actually had to hard step [my irons] once as well,” Berkshire said. “For those who don’t know what that is, you’d put the 5-iron shaft in the 4-iron. There’s also a double hard step where you put the 6-iron shaft in the 4-iron. I’ve had to do that as well, but we’ve settled on a single hard step for now. We’re still monitoring it at the moment. I’ll probably have a second set built up, so for super windy days, I might go with a double hard step.”

4. Mini boomstick

Kyle Berkshire makes hay bashing drivers for a living, but it isn’t his favorite club in the bag. The title goes to a 12-degree King Forged Tec prototype utility iron that travels over 300 yards with 200 mph ball speed when Berkshire catches it out of the middle of the face.

The club is so good, it has turned his driver into a secondary option off the tee.

“I’m a golf purist at heart, I love the game” Berkshire said. “This is my favorite club in the bag, no question about it. But I also feel like Cobra would agree. They’re extremely proud of this club. The biggest problem I’ve had over the course of my career, especially when I got to certain club speeds, is being able to use hollow cavity clubs because they tend to cave at certain speeds. Cobra did a tremendous job with this club. It took over five months of development. What they decided to go with was a foam insert with metal infused into the material to give it just enough support so I can swap it out every 2 to 3 weeks, which is a huge win for me.”

Several weeks of use equates to roughly 300 to 400 hits for Berkshire, which is a significant improvement from the previous product that lasted just 15 to 20 swings before the face failed.

5. Ultimate flex

When you’re the biggest bomber on the planet, you receive a boxing-style belt for winning the World Long Drive. Carrying the belt around in your golf bag isn’t practical. But you know what is practical? Adding a silhouette of you hoisting the belt on the sole of your putter.

It’s the ultimate flex if you’re a long-drive champ.

6. For the course

Having the ability to smash the ball over 400 yards makes Kyle Berkshire a human cheat code. But even the champ realizes there’s a difference between keeping it on the grid at a long drive event and splitting the fairway on a tight par-4. Instead of rolling with a 48-inch Cobra RadSpeed driver, Berkshire prefers to use a 45-inch version when he’s trying to break 70. (He’s a plus-two handicap, which doesn’t seem fair.)

“I swing [the driver] 140 to 142 miles per hour on the golf course,” Berkshire said. “I’m just trying to play a pull-fade and get it started on line. My main goal is to keep it in play. I typically won’t pull out a driver unless I have a lot of room to work with. I don’t really feel the need to use it unless there’s an obvious advantage and the hole is massively wide. That’s when I’ll let it go.”

To play a pull fade — he’s normally trying to hit a rope draw with his 48-inch driver — Berkshire adds strips of lead tape to the toe in an effort to slow down the face rotation through impact. It’s a go-to shot shape and driver weight setup you’d typically expect to see on Tour.

7. Going for broke

Prior to the start of this year’s World Long Drive Championship, Cobra made 30 RadSpeed heads for Kyle Berkshire and Bryson DeChambeau to use.

“Bryson went through two heads — and I went through 27,” said Berkshire, who topped 159 miles per hour clubhead speed during the competition. “We had one head left.”

Cobra simply didn’t anticipate Berkshire getting anywhere close to the numbers he was putting up during competition — and neither did Berkshire.

“I couldn’t believe how fast I was, and it was honestly a problem,” he said. “We had to adjust. Throughout prep, I had a few swings in the upper 150s, but nothing that sustained, so we had to make adjustments. We had to completely change our game plan and plan for these heads to be blown up because there was nothing we could do.”

The face on Berkshire’s driver starts with a CT of 215 and is then shaved to make it marginally faster — up to 230 — while still staying within the USGA limit of 256.

“If we’re being honest, 230 is not super-fast,” Berkshire said. “Most Tour players have a CT in the upper 230s or low 240s. Mine is still a slower head than most on Tour, but even then the heads were still blowing up. I feel like Cobra was the only company equipped to handle this. [Cobra Tour rep] Ben Schomin and my coach Bobby Peterson did a phenomenal job keeping me in a rhythm and changing out the heads. The speeds I was producing, we weren’t ready for them.”

Every golfer wants to hit the golf ball longer, and literally no human hits it longer than Kyle Berkshire.

Berkshire’s distance resume speaks for itself. He recently won the 2021 World Long Drive Championship, he was the first to break the 230 mph ball speed barrier and he’s also nearing 160 mph of swing speed with the driver. For reference, the average swing speed on the PGA Tour is around 113 mph.

Berkshire has all of the accolades on the World Long Drive tour, but he remains hungry for more. At just 24, he says his fastest speeds and longest drives are likely ahead of him, and he works tirelessly toward his speed goals.

Recently, during a Cobra-Puma media day event — alongside Formula F1 Ferrari-sponsored racers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz — I spent time with Berkshire and learned about his process for creating more distance. I saw firsthand his mind-blowing speed, and I also got myself into a long drive contest against Berkshire that didn’t go very well for me (more on that story in the Fully Equipped podcast below).

https://open.spotify.com/episode/2u3XHV0YFR5J9RaOd0s46v

By combining natural talent with education and hard work, Berkshire has learned how to create distance. During the day with Berkshire, I was a sponge for information.

Here are 6 things I learned from Berkshire about hitting the golf ball farther.

1) Low reps, high weight and … sprints?

Berkshire is all about creating power, and that starts with tuning his body without a golf club in his hands. But for all of the fancy new-age workouts, Berkshire keeps it quite simple.

“I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to [working out],” Berkshire said. “I recommend the big three lifts in power lifting: squat, bench press, dead lift. Overhead press, as well. Olympic lifting, definitely, I incorporate 3-5 times a week. I keep the reps low, I keep the weight high.”

If you’re not a big gym rat – and I don’t blame you – maybe you can try Berkshire’s other favorite training drill that doesn’t require a gym membership.

Berkshire says that when he was training for the World Long Drive Contest, he would do sprints in the morning 3-5 times per week.

“I want my body to be used to moving fast… my goal is I want to put on as much strength as possible without putting on a lot of size. I found that the more size I put on, the harder it is to get to certain positions in my swing.”

2) No swing tips necessary

According to Berkshire, you can increase speed and distance without changing your swing technique at all.

Those are like magic words to any golfer, aren’t they? More distance without any hard work? Sign me up!

Well, not quite. If you want to build more speed like Berkshire, you’ll still have to put in the hard work on the range.

“The big thing is I’ll hit 300 balls in the morning and 300 balls in the afternoon, typically,” Berkshire said.

That means 10 bags worth of the typical 30-ball buckets at your local range, and he does so all using his driver. You’ll also want to throw in a few shorter sessions where you’re swinging all-out with no regard for where the ball goes.

“Three times a week, I’ll swing 50 drivers as hard as I possibly can,” Berkshire continued. “You should be spraying it all over the place, because you’re overloading your central nervous system. Once it’s overloaded, you sleep that night, you recover, you eat food and it comes back stronger. You’ll fire your swing faster, and then with the increased strength from the gym, you’ll progress even quicker.

“And what you’ll be left with is your same swing. No swing tips here. What’s going to happen is your swing is going to be the same, it’s just going to fire and happen quicker and create more speed.”

3) Eat clean, and eat a lot

Berkshire works hard in the gym and on the range, and he leads an active lifestyle. As such, he needs to fuel his system and also keep from losing too much mass.

Of course, that doesn’t mean pounding burgers, fries and ice cream. Although Berkshire says he “indulges” every so often, he sticks to healthy whole foods such as lean meats, fruits, vegetables and carbs to reach his nutrition goals.

“When I’m prepping for Worlds, I need to eat 6,000-7,000 calories a day to keep from losing weight,” Berkshire says. “So I try to eat as much clean food as I can…in the off-season, like I am now, I try to have about 300 grams of protein a day, 500 grams of carbs and maybe 80 grams of fat. That adds up to roughly 3,600-3,800 calories a day because I’m still training every day…I will definitely indulge a little bit, but I do treat my body like a temple. I do want it to run at its best so I choose my food accordingly. So whole food sources is probably 90 percent of my diet.”

To build more distance in your game, combine fitness with nutrition. The engine of your swing needs to stay finely tuned to hold up to the increased speed training and gym work.

4) Find the right driver and shaft

You can swing as fast and hard as you want, but if you don’t have the right driver in your hands, you’ll never be able to truly maximize distance for your swing.

In Berkshire’s bag, he carries three different drivers for different purposes. He has two 48-inch drivers that are his competition weapons, and a shorter build that he uses when he actually plays golf on the course. The longer drivers have flexible shafts because he wants to release the clubhead and hit a draw. His shorter, on-course shaft, though, has a very stiff flex because he wants to hold the face off and hit a controlled fade. It’s more difficult to release the club head with a driver that has a stiffer shaft.

The driver that you need depends on your swing and your goals. To get the most out of your driver, consult a trusted fitter or local professional to see what clubhead, loft, shaft, flex and length are correct for you.

5) No stretching

Staying injury-free is crucial for Berkshire to continue honing his craft and building speed. While it may seem counterintuitive to some, he doesn’t do any stretches before swinging or lifting.

“I don’t stretch,” Berkshire said. “I do not stretch because I found when you stretch a cold muscle before you exercise, or [swing], the muscle can actually be at a higher risk of injury. Because when you’re stretching a muscle that’s cold, it doesn’t have the malleability of a warm muscle.”

Instead, Berkshire opts for a more relaxing way to engage the muscles.

“The other thing I’ll do is get massages 3-4 times a week, trying to keep the muscles open and relaxed,” Berkshire said.

6) ‘Kill it’

Swing thoughts can truly help determine the outcome of your shots. Some people get bogged down with technical positions or fear-inducing thoughts that cause tentative swings.

Berkshire’s swing thought is simple: “Kill it.”

He says this thought helps get him mentally prepared to swing the hardest that he can. When you’re looking to rip the farthest drive you’ve ever hit, you don’t want tension, you just want to kill it.

Kyle Berkshire’s incredible speed makes him almost unbeatable on the World Long Drive circuit. But like most high swing speed golfers, the two-time long drive champion is consistently trying to find ways to maintain spin rate. Too little spin will reduce carry yardage, while too much spin can cause the ball to balloon, sapping distance in the process.

Needless to say, there’s a fine line when it comes to optimizing spin.

In Berkshire’s case, swinging, say, an 8-iron 110 mph — his “stock” speed with the club — is going to increase the odds of spinning the ball, particularly on mishits. (To put Berkshire’s speed into perspective, the average pro is around 113 mph with the driver.)

To combat excessive spin, Berkshire already employs a set of True Temper Dynamic Gold X7 shafts — arguably the stiffest steel product in the industry — in his Cobra King Forged CB irons. He also tends to choke down on the club considerably — a simple gear hack that most have been told will improve accuracy in a pinch. Anthony Kim made a lot of money gripping down on every club in the bag, so the method has been thoroughly vetted.

The thing is, Berkshire doesn’t simply choke down an inch to curb spin. He goes all the way down to the end of the grip.

“A lot of people wonder how I can manage spin,” Berkshire said on GOLF’s Fully Equipped podcast. “One of the things I’ll do is choke down to the steel. I can still swing it the same, but you can see how much extra club is down there. You lose roughly 1.5 miles per hour clubhead speed per inch, so you’re actually swinging it 6 miles per hour slower.”

Choking down on the club also allows Berkshire to minimize the changes to his overall tempo and swing the club like he normally does, without worrying about taking something off.

“It allows me to swing with less speed without messing it up my tempo,” he said. “People ask why I don’t swing slower with less effort, well your tempo starts getting messed up, and I have an ingrained tempo I stick to.”

You don’t necessarily need to go “Full Berkshire” and choke down to the grip — be aware that your carry yardages will need to be adjusted if you plan on choking down considerably — but if you continually struggle with consistent spin and contact, gripping down is a simple way to light a fire under your game.

Who knows, it might turn into a long-term solution. It certainly has for Kyle Berkshire.
