Anyone who has labored through a round of golf with me in recent years has seen two distinct footwear looks. Not one, not three, not four or however many shoes I have in the closet. Just two. The same pairs over and over. 

First, there’s the timeless FootJoy classics. Pearly white leather you don’t want to get dirty. Great for sunny days. 

The other option, which I game rain or shine, are the Code Chaos spikeless kicks from Adidas. Code Chaos debuted five years ago, and were the only shoes I rocked through the throes of the pandemic, when I’d walk nine holes daily.

While the shoe’s design has changed slightly over the years, the most recent iteration — available for the first time this month — harkens back to the earliest versions. It’s athletic, and built with Adidas Boost technology to make walking feel good. That sensation of relief that overcomes you after you remove your spikes after walking 18? You don’t get that with these shoes. Because walking a round in Code Chaos isn’t a grind. It’s just…a walk.

2 things I like:

The cleats!

Can we call them cleats? These shoes are spineless, but the sole is covered with little protruding Zs. They point in all directions — Adidas calls this Twist Grip — ensuring that whatever direction your swing takes your feet, your shoes will lock to the turf beneath them. 

It can be difficult to achieve this true playability feature. Many golf shoe brands want their outsole to be sleek and orderly. They want the soft spikes to line up. But when it comes to the actual gripping of the shoe to the turf, who needs orderly? Aesthetics don’t matter nearly as much as stability. I like the little Zs. 

The waterproof upper

When I look down at Code Chaos shoes, they remind me of trainer tennis shoes. Maybe that’s the point: they are all-purpose and built for various environments. Essentially, that’s why I’ve made them a wardrobe staple. The upper part of the shoe is comfortable and feels like a mesh-based tennis shoe, but is covered with a waterproof layer. Muddy golf in the spring? No problem. Dewy morning in the summer? Your feet are dry. In the world of unpredictable conditions, we love a do-it-all shoe. 

1 thing I’m not crazy about:

The Boa technology

Which is part of the reason why I’m writing this review now. The shoes came out with Boa tech back in August and are just now being released with traditional laces. There’s no extra flap of leather. No zippers. No quarter-sized knob hanging off the side. Just laces. Sometimes simple is best.

Created as a collaborative effort between the Adidas design team and Johan and Blue Lindeberg, the father-daughter co-founders of JAY3LLE, the bold pieces are a blend of streetwear and high fashion, and are intended to encourage women to feel strong and powerful on the course.

“I have always sought to modernize the game of golf through fashion,” Johan Lindeberg said in a press release. “This capsule speaks to the energy and inclusive community that’s steadily growing in the sport and especially amongst women, which is why focusing on womenswear for this collection was so important.”

Lindeberg has plenty of experience launching eye-popping golf style through his time as founder and creative director of the popular golf brand J. Lindeberg, but this latest collaboration expands that work even further.

Sweden’s Linn Grant, an Adidas partner, will wear pieces from the capsule collection throughout this week’s AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews.

“I’ve always taken a personal interest in fashion outside of the course, so this capsule is one I’m really excited about,” Grant said in the release. “I was able to work with both Johan and the adidas team to provide feedback on the pieces to help bring this collection to life, so I know these silhouettes will inspire a lot of women to get out of their comfort zone and wear something that will provide them with energy and positivity whenever they play.”

As the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am makes its debut as a Signature Event this week, complete with its strongest-ever field, you, fans of the historic tournament can enjoy an ultra-cool capsule collection of shoes, apparel and accessories that pay homage to the tournament’s old-school origins.

“The Crosby Collection” — a collab between Adidas Golf and Malbon — is inspired by the original Crosby Clambake in 1937, Bing Crosby’s famous get-together for pro golfers, celebrities, and musicians.

“With this collection, we wanted to pay tribute to the essence of golf and fashion by taking old silhouettes and modernizing them,” Malbon Golf co-founder Stephen Malbon said in a press release.

Style

The collection’s vibe is delightfully vintage. The men’s pieces include button-down polos, pleated trousers and shorts, crewnecks, a lightweight sport coat and a cardigan inspired by one of the posters from one of the early Clambakes. The women’s items include a color-blocked dress with an argyle print, polos with slightly longer and wider sleeves to go with a boxier cut, and a form-fitting culotte pant.

There are also a few unisex pieces: a checkered anorak, a T-shirt featuring the clam decanters that were gifted to all amateur participants in Bing’s Clambakes, and a 5-panel hat. Shoe lovers will also appreciate two limited-edition offerings: a specially designed Stan Smith Golf model as well as the new MC87.

We love to talk about the future of golf equipment in regard to how it will help shape the way golfers play and enjoy the game, and this week on the Fully Equipped podcast we had the opportunity to speak with Masun Denison, Global footwear director for Adidas Golf, about the future of golf performance footwear.

One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation with Masun is that the future of golf footwear is multifaceted and driven by the many individuals that play the game. Whether it be golfers driven by spiked performance, modern spikeless, or those looking for a classically styled retro crossover.

The gear crew at GOLF.com spends a lot of time at Tour events snapping photographs of the tools used by the best players in the world. Posting club images online without context sometimes works, but it doesn’t help the weekend golfer understand the why behind a pro’s setup. In a new GOLF.com series, equipment editors Jonathan Wall and Ryan Barath answer those questions by highlighting interesting clubs in players’ bags, unique weighting, loft sleeve settings, and more. Welcome to “Bay Spy.”

The PGA Tour is full of rising stars, and few shine brighter than former World No. 1 amateur and recent PGA Tour University grad Ludvig Aberg. Since turning pro and earning his card through PGA Tour U, he has finished inside the top 25 in both of his starts and looks to have another great finish this week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

Here’s a quick look inside his golf bag.

A driver built for speed

When it comes to drivers, there are usually three to four models all built for different types of players. In Titleist’s case with the TSR series, they offer four models ranging in spin profiles from low to high from the TSR4 to the TSR1.

Now you would think that a faster player like Ludvig would default into a TSR4 or a TSR3 but, like a lot of players on the PGA Tour, he uses a TSR2 to find the perfect balance between distance, forgiveness and consistency in a package that also appeals to his eye. Take it as another example of why what might be the model targeted to your game might not actually be the one that works best on the course.

Shift that weight

Too many golfers don’t use the adjustable weights and hosels of their clubs to their advantage, but that’s certainly not the case with Ludvig and his TSR3 hybrid.

Not only does he have the weight in the toe position of the club to help slow down face rotation and encourage less of a draw, but he also has the hosel set to B-1, which for Titleist is the standard loft/flat lie angle setting to further promote a neutral to fade ball flight.

It’s nice to have options

The PGA Tour travels around a lot, and that means varying course conditions. Whether it be tightly mown areas around the greens or bunker sand texture, having a couple of options to optimize performance goes a long way in getting the most from every shot.

For Ludvig, that means carrying two different Titleist Vokey lob wedges — an M grind and a more aggressive V grind to choose from depending on the course. The V grind is a unique option in the Titleist Vokey lineup because it offers more bounce toward the leading edge but has more heel and toe relief to provide extra versatility when opening the club face.

Not broke — don’t fix it

Irons are all about precision and distance control and once golfers find a set they like, they tend to stick with them for a while.

Gear

Even though they are close to being more than three generations old (thanks to new Titleist irons spotted at the Memorial Tournament a few weeks ago) the original T100s still offer an incredible amount of performance in a small blade-like package with their multi-material design that places tungsten in the toe to increase stability.

Although he doesn’t have enough rounds logged on the Tour for a full stats analysis to compare to his peers, in his most recent start at the Travelers Championship he gained 1.12 strokes tee to green and hit 75 percent of his greens in regulation. I don’t imagine those irons are going anywhere anytime soon.

You gotta trust it

As we recently learned at the U.S. Open, going with what works on the putting green can really pay off, regardless of how old the putter might be. In Ludvig’s case, that means holding onto an Odyssey Works putter that dates back to when he was still a teenager in 2015.

It was only two-and-a-half years ago that Macklemore launched his lifestyle apparel line, Bogey Boys.

The 39-year-old rapper turns 40 this month, and took up the game in his mid-30s — relatively late in life. But he quickly became a passionate player, and is now a regular on the celebrity pro-am circuit.

Bogey Boys has been available both online and in the brand’s flagship store in Seattle since its launch, but a new limited-edition collaboration with Adidas will expand Bogey Boys’ customer reach and appeal even more.

The collection, which launches on June 14, will be comprised of pieces for both men and women, and aims to combine Adidas’ sport and lifestyle heritage with Macklemore’s love of vintage and classic looks.

“This has been an amazing opportunity for us at Bogey Boys to work with Adidas,” Macklemore said. “I think that the lineage of Adidas, it’s classic. It’s a brand that I grew up with, that I have always worn, that I’ve always supported. And it’s been a part of my closet rotation since I was a little kid. And to kind of have this full-circle moment of being able to create with the Adidas Golf team, to dream, to put together a collection that I think is amazing, has just been a really cool experience, and one that I’m super grateful for and excited to introduce to the world.”

Macklemore has said that he’s inspired by looks that pay homage to the past but feel modern, and this new collection fits the bill. Fans can look forward to retro throwbacks like four-button placket polos, straight-leg trousers, terry cloth tracksuits and checker prints in shades of blue, green and white, as well as a few accessories and a showstopping shoe, the MC80, which features a classic 80s-inspired look, complete with a kilty.

“This is a collection that I think, from front to back, it pays homage to the past,” Macklemore said. “It’s also got the technology of today. And it feels like something that you could’ve seen in an Adidas catalog from back in the day. We went back to the archives. We want back to the archival pieces of going through old catalogs and old look books and what people were wearing back in the day, and wanted to create a modern spin on it. I think that we executed it beautifully.”

Part of the appeal of Bogey Boys, Macklemore says, is the way it empowers the customer to wear something on the course that really resonates with their personality.

“It’s really up to us as the novices, or the Bogey Boys of the world, to be ourselves, and to stick out, and to bring our own creativity to a sport that has oftentimes been compartmentalized and stuck in a box, and has this unofficial uniform that we must adhere to,” he said. “It’s just not real. I want to break that box. I want to create something that everyone can wear, that they can feel comfortable in, and be an individual.”

The Bogey Boys x Adidas collection will be available for purchase starting June 14 on the Bogey Boys website, the Adidas website and in select retailers.

“I want people to, whether they’re hitting good golf shots or horrible ones, at least to look good on the golf course,” Macklemore said. “And this collection has something for you. I’m excited for the world to wear it.”
