Motocaddy recently sent me one of their new Motocaddy PRO 5000 Laser Rangefinders to try out. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t thinking of much of the delivery. There’s a TON of rangefinders on the market right now, mostly made from the same factories with the same features and benefits, but Motocaddy did manage to sneak in a little hidden feature. If you’re a Motocaddy push cart or electric caddie user, it makes a ton of sense.

To clear the bases right away; the PRO 5000 has all the features that you expect out of a rangefinder in 2026. 6x magnification to see what you’re pointing at, a slope switch to turn slope math on and off for use in tournament play, the ability to switch between yards and meters with a +/-1 yard accuracy promise, a magnet on the side to stick to a golf cart (which helps to misplace the rangefinder quite often, ask me I would know), a 350-yard pin lock with a 1500-yard total distance capture and an adjustable diopter to make sure that you can actually see what you’re trying to range. It also has USB-C which is a fantastic benefit that every single rangefinder company, I’m looking at you Bushnell, should implement so we can charge our rangefinders in the car on the way to the course.

I also really like the look and feel of the rangefinder. It’s heavy enough to feel like it’s well built and not plastic feeling, but small enough to fit in the hands very ergonomically. The stormtrooper-esque look is cool, and the rangefinder comes off as premium, not cheap. I can’t tell you how many rangefinders there are on the market that feel like they were just made to be made. Those ones are cheap for a reason. It’s clear that Motocaddy made some good decisions with their factory when deciding what was important in their new offering, which brings us to the differentiator: the case.

The case would appear to be similar to other cases on the market. A nice hardshell with both a zipper and a bunjee. No matter what terrain you’re battling you aren’t going to lose your rangefinder because of the case. But it’s the backside of the case that makes this the perfect choice for Motocaddy users. There’s a little receiver slot on the back so you can attach the case to the Motocaddy accessory station. The accessory station is the hub of the cart up by the power control and where you hold onto the electric caddy. It’s got several attachment points for sand bottle holders, scorecard holders, phone holders and other accessories which now include your rangefinder case. A very simple way to keep the rangefinder at arm’s reach without having to dig it out of a bag pocket, or grab it off of a bag from a less than ideal position. It may sound silly but I spent a year getting my rangefinder out of it’s case from the position it hangs on the bag, and once the bag is actually on the Motocaddy electric caddy, it’s actually quite annoying to reach the rangefinder. The new positioning right up top is perfect, and it makes this whole thing make sense.

Now, you may be thinking what I’m thinking. The whole selling point of the rangefinder is actually the case. And I can’t blame you for thinking that, I thought it too. This may have been a better $50 accessory purchase for the case than the whole rangefinder itself. But after using the rangefinder for a couple of rounds, there’s no harm in it. It does the job well, and for $250 it’s worth the buy if you are looking to buy a new rangefinder you can trust that’s convenient to use with your Motocaddy electric caddie. Plus, they don’t just sell the case.

There’s very little the Caddie can’t do as far as GPS functions are concerned. Since it’s a self-contained device, you can download your course onto the tablet before your round, or you can find it when you arrive at the club. They’ve got over 45,000 courses and counting loaded up to play. The tablet is very efficient on power, lasting me about three rounds before I even got concerned about it dying on me. The screen is bright enough to see in sunlight and the magnets are STRONG — way stronger than any rangefinder or other golf accessory I have. It’s also IPX7 waterproof, so even if you get caught in a storm you’re still going to know how far away you are from the dry relief of the clubhouse. 

When you pull up to a new hole there’s a couple of different viewpoints to check out, including a drone-style flyover of the hole, 2D and 3D views that you can maneuver around, as well as the ability to get a close-up of the hole so you can check for hazards or tighter landing spots. No matter where you are, you’ll also get live updates on front, middle, and back distances for the hole you’re playing and you of course have the ability to use the touch screen to find distances to specific areas of the hole, which is great for finding out if your 7-iron can carry that bunker in front of the green. The Caddie does everything that a normal in-cart GPS can do, but that’s just where its functionality starts. 

On top of being a reliable GPS device, you can also keep your score, track your stats, and even keep track of games between you and your golf buddies. Pretty hard to argue about handing over $5 when the Caddie is keeping tabs on the game. 

Now, I can’t write this article without addressing the most obvious and common question that all of my buddies asked me: Can’t I just use my phone?

I’m not going to lie, I thought this too. But then I realized the benefits of using the Caddie over my phone. The first of which may be a niche issue but my GPS app of choice on the phone doesn’t allow me to play music at the same time for some reason. So that’s a big deal when we’re trying to keep vibes high. I can put the Caddie and my Bluetooth speaker up on the cart and have zero issues throwing on my Spotify playlist and not touching my phone while I play. You don’t actually realize how nice it is not to have to interact with your phone at all when you play until you play a full round without touching it. I don’t want to see those notifications that I “missed a meeting,” I’m playing golf at noon on a Tuesday. 

Lastly, there’s just a cool factor to the product. I throw this up on the cart at my home club, which again has no GPS screen, and everyone is jealous. They’ve all asked me where I got it and how to get one. Our pro has even talked to me about getting a handful of them to use as a rental during rounds, which is awesome for guests, tournament players, or anyone else who wants the benefits that a GPS device gets you. Not to mention the score and game tracking would probably stop a few fights during the daily men’s game.

TaylorMade’s accessories team constantly looks for ways to push the envelope with creative concepts that generate conversation. Look at recent limited releases and you’ll notice they’ve gone well beyond the friendly confines of specialized headcovers tied to Tour events. The ideas have run the gamut, from classic comic book phrases and Dia de los Muertos covers to collaborations with General Mills (Cinnamon Toast Crunch) and Vessel. No idea is too big.

Big ideas have to start somewhere, and in this particular case, TaylorMade’s best ideas started with food. Indeed, food-specific golf balls were selling better than almost every specialized item the company churned out.

“We realized that some of the ones that sold the best were food-related,” Mike Fox, senior director of product creation for TaylorMade’s golf ball category, told GOLF.com. “Sushi ball, pizza ball, things like that. We couldn’t figure out why balls with food attached to them sold better than balls tied to Muirfield or the U.S. Open.”

What Fox and the team eventually learned was people were willing to acquire items tied to their passions. Initially, it was food. In recent years, TaylorMade started to push the nostalgia button with Galaxian-esque covers and New York-style pizza accessories. Passions have continued to fuel future creations.

“We’ve gone into the collaboration space more in recent years,” Fox said. “But a collab is very different than licensing. We intimately work with a group to develop products. Licenses are a little more like, hey, what’s a brand that has a lot of energy or has a large following where it’d make sense to license their logos?”

During a brainstorming session, the idea was floated to contact Namco and see if they’d be interested in doing a licensing deal around Pac-Man, long considered one of the greatest video games ever created.

“If you ask people if they’ve heard of Pac-Man, there’s a 98 percent chance they know it,” Fox said. “It has that kind of brand recognition across all ages. That’s today, even if you’re talking about young kids. That’s incredible awareness for something that’s that old. Few things are that popular. It’s sold over 43 million games in the space.”

Unsure if Namco, Pac-Man’s developer, would be a willing partner, TaylorMade reached out to inquire to their licensing group and received an immediate response: They were game.

“I’m not even sure if it was a day,” said Fox. “Normally these brands will ghost you for a bit or not respond if it doesn’t make sense. This one was quick. There was tons of back-and-forth between our team and Namco, but it was more about how we were going to use their logos and the equity they’ve built up over the years. This wasn’t a collab where they were helping us create the items. That was all our team. But it was still an extensive process.”

Hoping to hit the “golfing core” — Fox called it those in their 40s, 50s and 60s who grew up playing Pac-Man — TaylorMade created a deep lineup of products around Pac-Man and the Ghost Gang, better known as Blinky, Inky, Pinky and Clyde. The list of Pac-Man products includes pix golf balls, alignment covers, headcovers, ball markers, headwear and golf tees with the Pac-Man characters.

It’s easy to look at the items and wonder if TaylorMade’s team slapped the characters on them and called it a day. After all, it’s a licensing deal; not a full-on collaboration. However, plenty of hours went into making sure these covered popped and justified their hefty price tags.

For example, the eyes of each ghost on the pix ball all have to point toward Pac-Man on the cover. It’s a small but important detail that can be missed if you’re not paying close attention.

“We learned about that during the design process,” Fox said. “The eyes of the ghost have to be pointing a certain direction because they always have to be looking at Pac-Man. On a pix product, Pac-Man is in a different place, so it’s something you have to take into account. Just really interesting details we didn’t know about Pac-Man when we first started. We did have some discussions during the process with [Namco] about whether the ghost’s eyes were in the right place on each product.”

As expected, TaylorMade’s Pac-Man collection didn’t stay on the shelves for long. As of writing, the alignment stick cover, ball markers and snapback hat were already sold out. Fox expects the rest of the collection to be gone in the next 48 hours. The good ones never last long.

The Open Championship marks the end of major championship golf in 2024. After the final putt drops on Sunday afternoon, golf fans will have to wait until the Masters to see all of the best players in the world on the same stage.

It also means we’ll also have to wait 9 months to catch a glimpse at the next batch of major championship-themed accessories from equipment manufacturers.

Hoping to go out with a bang, Ping released a special set of 2024 Open Championship covers that, funny enough, have nothing to do with Royal Troon or the oldest major championship. But they still deliver — pun most definitely intended — in a big way.

In a nod to the Royal Mail — the UK’s version of the United States Postal Service — Ping created blade and mallet putter covers around the mail service’s colors with the words “1st Class” stitched on the side. The “torch-red polyurethane” exterior is exceptionally bright, making it downright impossible to lose sight of the cover on the putting green.

A fur-like interior was added to guard scratches and provide 1st class protection. Again, pun most definitely intended. A magnetic closure ensures the cover will stay on your flatstick until you’re ready to hole the next 10-footer.

Aaron Rai is clearly unique when it comes to his equipment setup.

Eagle-eyed gearheads can pick out his 2019 TaylorMade M6 driver he’s using around Detroit Golf Club, but most fans see the 54-hole co-leader at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic as the “guy who wears two gloves” no matter what the weather.

But Rai’s most endearing part of his gear setup would be the headcovers that adorn his irons. Yes, we’re talking about iron covers, perhaps the most taboo of silly golf-style choices. Ironcovers are basically a rarity on the PGA Tour. Rai is likely the only full-time Tour member who uses them week in and week out.

But the Englishman doesn’t donn the major golf faux pas because he doesn’t care about how it looks — which he doesn’t but that’s beside the point. Rai actually has quite an endearing reason for keeping them on his sticks.

Sure, the covers keep his six TaylorMade P7TW irons from getting nicks as they bounce around, but they also kept his sticks from his junior golf days clean too.

He explained in a 2021 interview with SiriusXM PGA Tour radio that he still uses them to remind himself of where he came from.

“I grew up in very much a working-class family, and golf has always been a very expensive game,” Rai said. “I started from the age of 4 years old, and my dad used to pay for the equipment, pay for my memberships, my entry fees. And it wasn’t money that we really had, to be honest, but he’d always buy me the best clubs.

“When I was about seven or eight years old, [my dad] bought me a set of Titleist 690 MBs, and they were like 800-1,000 pounds back then, just for a set of clubs for a kid. I cherished them. When we used to go out and practice, he used to clean every single groove afterward with a pin and with baby oil.”

Not long after, Rai’s father went out and purchased the iron covers to protect the investment.

Gear

“To protect the golf clubs, he thought it would be good to put iron covers on it,” Rai said. “I’ve pretty much had iron covers on all of my sets ever since just to appreciate the value of what I have, and it all started with that first set.

“Although on the PGA Tour, we get given equipment, and we get given everything that we need, it’s more out of principle. The value of not losing perspective of what I have and where I am.

“The covers are going to stay, I’m sorry.”

If Rai is able to separate himself from Akshay Bhatia Sunday and win his maiden PGA Tour victory to add to his two PGA Tour titles, he may very yet become the first player ever to win on the PGA Tour with iron covers.

That’s more wins than any of the so-called “golf purists” at home who might judge him for them have.

Let’s be frank: Golf equipment can be expensive, but even with that being the case, there are a lot of other things that you should have for your next round that don’t have to be. Here is a list of (mostly) not-so-expensive things to help make sure you get the most from your next round of golf.

Tees

It might seem simple, but making sure you’re stocked up on tees can prevent a scramble when you get to the course and realize you’re low on one of the game’s most essential accessories.

They’re also a great way to flash a little extra style without breaking the bank, so be sure to always be stocked.

Club brush

Clean clubs are happy clubs, and on top of that, clean irons and wedges perform a lot better than dirty ones when it comes to spin and distance control, so having a proper brush that can keep your clubs clean might also help lower your score too.

Towel

Just like with a club brush, having a golf towel can make cleaning your clubs, balls, and even wiping sweat from your grips a lot easier, and once again gives you the opportunity to showcase some of your personal style.
