Why this pro is Sepp Straka’s good-luck charm

Sepp Straka has been on a roll for the past three PGA Tour seasons, posting two wins: the 2022 Honda Classic and the 2023 John Deere Classic.

While Straka has yet to claim a win in 2024, he’s could potentially still have his most lucrative season to date. He’s had 10 top-25 finishes, and, with more than $4.2 million in earnings, is currently 18th in the FedEx Cup standings, with the Playoffs just around the corner.

On this week’s episode of Subpar, Straka joined hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz to chat about a number of topics, including how his family moved from Austria to Georgia when he was a teenager, his Ryder Cup experience and what is was like to call golf on CBS. But one of the highlights of Straka’s sit-down was when he described why a certain pro has become his good-luck charm.

“JT Poston,” Straka began. “We were joking — I played with him last week, Thursday, Friday, I made a hole-in-one. And I had three hole-in-ones the last 14 months, and he was there for all of them.”

Straka said that only one of those aces occurred during a competitive round, which just happened to be the U.S. Open. The other two were at Augusta — one during the Par 3 Contest, and another on Augusta’s 12th hole during a practice round.

“That’s definitely my best one,” he said.

The lesson: next time you see these two players together, keep an eye on those par 3s!
