This vaunted major championship venue will host two U.S. Opens in one year

Come June 2036, the center of the golf world will be Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
The USGA announced the venerable Long Island club will host both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women’s Open over consecutive weeks in 2036.
“Few places can match the historic importance of Shinnecock Hills to golf in the United States,” USGA Chief Championships Officer John Bodenhamer said in a release. “As an organization, we felt that this iconic venue would be an ideal stage for both our men’s and women’s premier championships. It will offer the perfect opportunity to bring the game’s best to one course and provide fans the chance to watch them compete for a national championship in back-to-back weeks.”
This will be the third time the U.S.’s two national opens have been played in back-to-back weeks on the same course. The first was in 2014 when Pinehurst, this year’s U.S. Open host, saw Martin Kaymer win the men’s U.S. Open and then Michelle Wie West broke through for her first and only major title at the U.S. Women’s Open the following week.
Pinehurst is again set to pull double duty with both U.S. Opens in 2029 before Shinnecock takes the honor seven years later.
Shinnecock last hosted the U.S. Open in 2018, won by Brooks Koepka, and 2036 will mark the Southhampton, N.Y. club’s seventh U.S. Open after it hosts the event in 2026. The two championships will also be the USGA founding member club’s 11th and 12th USGA events, although the 2036 U.S. Women’s Open will be the first time the club has hosted that event. It will be the second women’s USGA event at the club which was the first to allow female members, doing so since its inception in 1891, after the 1900 U.S. Women’s Amateur.

The club hosted both the second U.S. Amateur and second U.S. Open in 1896.
“Shinnecock is deeply proud of our founding association with the USGA and our role in setting the course of history for golf in America,” Shinnecock Hills Club President Brett Pickett said. “And we are extremely excited to build on that legacy through this historic, back-to-back presentation of men’s and women’s major championship golf in Southampton in 2036.
“The seventh U.S. Open at Shinnecock will be played 140 years after the first, as we continue to be the only club to have hosted the U.S. Open in three different centuries. And our first U.S. Women’s Open will build on our proud history of advancing the women’s game in America, which began when Shinnecock was the first golf club in the U.S. to have women members in 1891. We look forward to working closely with our friends at the USGA and with the Southampton community to develop these special weeks in Southampton in the years ahead.”
