LPGA reschedules first major of the year for September and postpones three other events

March 20, 2020

The first major of the 2020 professional golf season will be played after all, but with a whole new date.

On Friday, the LPGA announced that the ANA Inspiration will be rescheduled for September 10-13 at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. The tournament was originally scheduled for April 2-5, one week before the Masters, but was postponed last week in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

The move is notable because it is the first postponed pro golf event to receive a new date. The first two major championships of 2020 on the men’s schedule, the Masters and the PGA Championship, have both been postponed. Speculation abounds for when and if those tournaments will be played, but neither have been officially rescheduled. Hotel prices in Augusta, Ga. have spiked for October as rumors spread about a possible fall Masters, but at this point they are only rumors.

In addition to rescheduling the ANA, the LPGA also announced the postponement of three more tournaments originally scheduled for the spring.

“After previously announcing the postponement of our events through the ANA Inspiration and following broadened directives from the various health organizations, the LPGA Tour informed its players that three additional events on our schedule are now postponed: the Lotte Championship in Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii (April 15-18), the Hugel-Aar Premia LA Open in Los Angeles, Calif. (April 23-26) and the LPGA Mediheal Championship in Daly City, Calif. (April 30-May 3),” read the statement from the Tour.

The ANA Inspiration will take the spot of the Cambia Portland Classic in Portland, Ore., which will now take place September 17-20.

The PGA Tour has postponed all events through the PGA Championship, which originally was set for May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, which is currently under a shelter-in-place order from the local and state governments.
