Here’s what you missed from Round 2 of the Houston Open

October 12, 2019

Bad weather in the Houston area resulted in afternoon tee times being delayed for over two hours on Friday at the Houston Open, and while many players did manage to get their second rounds in, there’s still a sizeable portion of the field who have as much as an entire second nine to play on Saturday morning.

Here’s everything you missed from Friday’s action at the Houston Golf Club’s Tournament Course.

Peter Malnati leads — for now

Malnati carded five birdies and an eagle in the second round to shoot seven under on the day, bringing his 36-hole total to 10 under par overall — good enough for a one-shot lead over first-round co-leader Talor Gooch, who is nine under par overall with four holes left to play in his second round.

Malnati has one Tour victory on his resume: the 2016 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Who else is playing well?

Carlos Ortiz, J.J. Henry and Brendon Todd fired rounds of five under par (67) to move up the leaderboard into T6, T20 and T44, respectively.

Of the players who finished their second round on Friday, Malnati’s 65 (-7) was the low score.

How about the big names?

Cameron Champ is currently one over par in his second round through 14 holes, and two under par overall — eight shots back.

Henrik Stenson is one under par on the day through 14 holes, and one under par overall.

Jason Dufner is even through 14 in Round 2 and is one over par overall.

Patton Kizzire and Keegan Bradley got their second rounds in, and are two over and four over through 36 holes, respectively.

What does the cut line look like?

At the moment, there’s still lots of golf to be played to get the second round in, but the projected cut is even par, meaning Dufner, Kizzire and especially Bradley are all in danger of going home early.

When does the second round resume?

Play was called for darkness at 6:56 p.m. CT on Friday and will resume at 8:00 a.m. CT on Saturday morning. Approximate third round tee times are 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CT on Saturday. Players will go off in threesomes off of both tees.
