Another week, another PGA Tour event interrupted by weather.
After the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was shortened to 54 holes last week, the WM Phoenix Open is now at the mercy of Mother Nature, despite being played in *typically* sunny Scottsdale.
Day 1 saw a rain delay of more than three and a half hours, meaning all of the afternoon wave didn’t finish their opening round. Then Friday saw the restart of play delayed by more than 90 minutes due to frost. While the first round was completed at 1:50 p.m. MT, some players who completed their first round Thursday got the whole day off Friday.
And of course, while the resumption of the second round went off as planned at 7:34 a.m. Saturday, play was halted again at 7:52 for 21 minutes due to unplayable conditions from heavy rain. Yes, you apparently can get heavy rain in Phoenix.
It all adds up to 5 hours and 34 minutes of delays this week. With just 10 hours and 51 minutes of daylight in Scottsdale on Saturday, making up that time to get all 72 holes by Sunday will be tricky.
Luckily for the tournament, the second round finished at 1:40 p.m. Saturday and the 36-hole cut has trimmed the field from 131 to TKTK. Now with third-round tee times starting on the 1st and 10th tees at 2:10 p.m. most of the field should be able to play at least nine holes in their third rounds Saturday.
The final group will tee off at 4:10 p.m., giving them just under two hours before the 6:06 p.m. sunset.
In that final group will be Sahith Theegala, who was one of the players who didn’t play a shot Friday but came out Saturday morning and shot 64 to lead by one at 13 under. He’ll be joined by Nick Taylor and Andrew Novak, who share second.
However, the final group — and the rest of the field — will have another potential weather-related obstacle: frost. Temperatures are expected to dip around freezing overnight, posing a significant chance of frost again in the morning, which could delay the resumption of the fourth round.
You can watch Saturday’s third round of the 2024 WM Phoenix Open on NBC starting at 3 p.m. ET. Peacock will offer a simulcast of NBC’s coverage, while ESPN+ will provide featured group coverage.
