The PGA Tour heads to Detroit, Mich., this week for the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, and we’re picking a Tour rookie as our long-shot to win. Here’s our pick, the Rocket Mortgage Classic odds and betting favorites and everything else you need to know for the week.

Rocket Mortgage Classic odds: Long-shot bet

For this week’s event in Detroit, we’re picking Austin Eckroat to have a week to remember and capture his maiden victory. Eckroat comes into the week with +6600 odds-to-win.

The 24-year-old rookie, who has three top-10s finishes on the season so far, has been on a hot streak of late. He hasn’t missed a cut since April, and his last five results look like this: T2, T16, T30, T10 and T24.

That T10 came at the U.S. Open at LACC, marking an impressive finish in only his second-career major start. His runner-up came at the AT&T Byron Nelson, which was a low-scoring affair with the winning number coming in at 23 under. That’s important because pros always go super low at Detroit Golf Club during the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with Tony Finau winning last year’s event with a total score of 26 under.

Should he pull off his first Tour win this week, you could take home $660 with a modest $10 bet. Also consider placing small bets on him to finish top-10 and top-20 as insurance.

Looking for more long-shots to bet on? This week’s long-shot honorable mentions are Aaron Rai (+6600) and Doug Ghim (+6600).

Rocket Mortgage Classic odds: The favorites

Despite coming on the heels of two Designated Events, the Rocket Mortgage Classic field is packing plenty of star power. At the top of the odds-to-win list are Rickie Fowler and defending champion Tony Finau at +1200. Major winners Collin Morikawa (+1400), Justin Thomas (+1600) and Hideki Matsuyama (+1800) follow suit.

Max Homa is knotted with Matsuyama with +1800 odds-to-win, and last week’s winner Keegan Bradley opens the week with odds of +2800.

How last week’s long-shot fared

For last week’s Travelers Championship, we chose veteran Adam Scott as our long-shot pick to win, and he didn’t disappoint. Scott opened with a strong eight-under 62 to get into contention, and remained near the top of the leaderboard until he was undone but a final-round 71 to drop to T19.

While it wasn’t a win, it still means we hit our top-20 insurance bet, which is our eighth top-20 hit of the year. Interestingly, our pick to win the U.S. Open two weeks ago, Keegan Bradley, went on to dominate the Travelers and capture his sixth PGA Tour victory.
