Previewing U.S. Open Round 3

We’ve reached the weekend at Brookline, and several big-name stars are right in the mix at the top of the leaderboard, including World No. 3 Rory McIlroy.

The 2011 U.S. Open champion got off to a rough start on Friday when he took three swipes with a wedge to get his ball out of deep fescue beside the 3rd green. That led to a double bogey, but McIlroy didn’t phone it in from there.

Instead, he fought back with five birdies to shoot a 69 and reach four under. But he’s not quite in the lead. That spot belongs Joel Dahmen and two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, who shot a 66 in the second round to reach five under.

For Saturday’s third round, Morikawa will occupy the final pairing alongside Dahmen, beginning at 3:45 p.m. ET. McIlroy tees off with Aaron Wise at 3:23 p.m. ET.
