Our Picks: The best cold weather and rain gear to stay warm and dry
When the temperature starts to drop, I do everything I can to extend my golf season. Living on Long Island, NY, I’ve grown accustomed to layers, gloves, heaters, beanies, and long johns for fall and early spring golf. Through many years of trial and error, I’ve learned what golf apparel and rain gear works best to keep me warm on the course.
This year in particular was a true test of my ability to play in all conditions. Throughout October and November, my travels had me in Scotland for two weeks, Canada, and all over the Northeast. From frigid temperatures to freezing rain to high winds, I played through it all.
Now I’d like to share with you the jackets, hoodies, pullovers, vests, pants, shoes, and gloves I wore to stay warm and dry to help me play beyond my normal weather threshold.
This lightweight hoodie is the pound-for-pound warmth king. It’s fleece-lined and built for athletic movements to keep you swinging as freely as a hot summer day. I grabbed this hoodie more than any other this fall.
Adidas COLD.RDY Hoodie
When it comes to fall golf, it can be a tale of two rounds if you tee it up early in the day. By the time the sun hits its highest point, you’re ready to shed a few layers. That’s what the ThermoSeries Full-Zip hoodie is perfect for. Toss it on when you need it, and off when you don’t. This jacket packs convenient warmth.
FootJoy ThermoSeries Full-Zip Hoodie
If I know the weather isn’t going to come around, I charge my G-tech hoodie batteries the night before to prepare. This hoodie features a battery-powered bar in the pouch to keep your hands warm and has the insulated feeling of a wetsuit. There’s some weight to it but the snug fit prevents a bulky feeling. It’s shocking how easy it is to maintain a smooth swing in this hoodie. When I’m going to be outside for hours at a time, on or off the course, this is the hoodie I grab.
G-Tech Men’s Heated Hoodie x Sport 3.0
When it’s breezy, swing easy… and wear this half-zip. It’s ideal for cool, windy conditions and has a more stylish look than your classic wind and rain gear.
Adidas Ultimate365 Tour WIND.RDY Half-Zip
In cool temperatures, it’s the perfect top layer. In cold temperatures, it’s the perfect mid-layer. That means this is the perfect quarter-zip to stay warm.
FootJoy ThermoSeries Heather Brushed Back Mid-Layers
Out of everything I wore this fall, my Radmor crewneck received the most ‘where you’d get that?’ inquiries. One look or one feel and it’s easy to see why. This conversation starter is how you should start when laying out a fall golf outfit.
Radmor PERKINS Crew Sweatshirt – Birch
When it’s not quite cold enough for my G-Tech hoodie, I’m reaching for my G-Tech vest. It’s the fall/winter/spring piece I wear more than anything else. I hate having cold hands, and this vest was the answer to my prayers.
G-Tech Men’s Heated Vest
You simply cannot go wrong with any item from Puma’s Cloudspun collection. They offer some of the best color options in the game. The question isn’t whether should you buy this vest, it’s what color should you buy it in.
Puma Cloudspun Colorblock
If you’re looking for a lightweight vest option, look no further. Radmor has you covered.
Radmor Anderson – Hybrid Performance Vest – Blue Graphite
It’s hard to find a jacket that doesn’t sacrifice swing mobility. At least it was before I came across this option from Adidas. This also doesn’t look like your standard golf jacket – which is a compliment to its versatility in your wardrobe.
Adidas ULTIMATE365 Tour Frostguard Full-Zip Padded Jacket
I’m not one to wear big, bulky layers. I prefer to go with lighter options that I can put on and off as I please. The entire ThermoSeries from FootJoy goes well together. At the very least, snag this hybrid jacket for ideal layering.
FootJoy ThermoSeries Hybrid Jacket
The stretch comfort in this jacket will have you forgetting that you’re wearing a jacket.
Radmor Anderson – Hybrid Performance Jacket – Blue Graphite
This premium rain jacket comes at a premium price. But you get what you pay for. It’s the best rain jacket I’ve ever worn. This is the kind of rain gear investment you’ll be hesitant about and end up thanking yourself later for making it.
Galvin Green “ArmStrong” – Waterproof Jacket
This windbreaker will get a lot of use in early fall and spring conditions – and I’m just talking about on the course.
Palm Golf Co. Upgrade Performance Windbreaker – Tailored Fit
The perfect storm of ultra-lightweight, wind, and water-resistant. I’m a big fan of the sleek black look, too.
Asher Shell Jacket
GORE-TEX is a favorite material among George Costanza and Galvin Green. Put these rain pants on and you’ll quickly know why.
Galvin Green “Arthur” Waterproof pants
The non-slip waistband is clutch on these pants. Anyone who has used a cheap set of rain gear knows what I’m talking about.
FootJoy HydroLite X Rain Pants
I consider these to be the most stylish among rain pants options. Though you could argue the competition isn’t very strong in this category. Nonetheless, there has to be a winner.
Adidas Rain.RDY Golf Pants
So, it’s not quite raining hard enough for rain pants and it’s not quite cold enough for heavy pants – what do you wear? Enter Galvin Green’s windproof and water-repellent Lane pants. Take the debate out of what pants to wear during debatable conditions.
Galvin Green “Lane” Pants
You’ll know when it’s cold enough to wear these pants, and you’ll be happy you did.
FootJoy ThermoSeries Pants
I’ve worn these fleece-lined pants more than I’d like to admit in the last few months. That should tell you everything you need to know about them.
Adidas ULTIMATE365 TOUR WIND.RDY Warm Pants
For those cold, windy days, these leather mixed-material gloves are clutch.
Galvin Green “Lewis” – Windproof gloves
Keeping a secure grip on winter gloves is no easy task, and yet FootJoy’s WinterSof gloves make it easy.
FootJoy WinterSof Pair
If wet conditions are looming, this is the only pair of rain gloves you need. I always have a pair in my bag just in case. It’s a must-have piece of rain gear.
FootJoy RainGrip Pair
These shoes should be in your collection for rain or shine. Enough said.
TRUE Linkswear – TRUE OG Tour
If you’re walking in stormy conditions, you might as well do it in a pair of Stormwalkers. These beasts are built to withstand all elements.
Typically, rain gear shoes sacrifice style and comfort. That’s not a problem here.
