Scheffler’s bag remains largely unchanged from his other wins this season, although he subbed out the 7-wood he used to win at Quail Hollow and Murfield Village for the Srixon ZU85 3-iron he’s used for every one of his other wins before this season. Swapping high-lofted fairway woods for utility and driving irons was a common theme this week, and is usually the case for links golf. Scheffler was no exception.
The victory is the 25th for TaylorMade’s Spider putter family, which Scheffler switched to last year, since the beginning of 2024. Scheffler accounts for 11 of those victories now, and it’s back-to-back for what’s become the winningest putter on the PGA Tour.
It’s also Scheffler’s fourth victory this season, all since he switched back to a Vokey SM10 60.06K lob wedge. Scheffler’s go-to lobber had been the 60.04T from the end of the 2022 season until this spring, but he switched back to the .06K — which is known for its super wide sole to aid performance out of the bunker — at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and has won four times since. Scheffler won his debut major at the 2022 Masters with this wedge and has added two more with it this season.
One popular gear change this week on the firm links turf was taking the ribbons, or grind lines, out of their wedges to help them move through the turf faster. The nice thing about Scheffler’s .06K grind wedge is that it doesn’t have any ribbons to begin with, which likely helped him adjust to the links turf seamlessly.
It’s interesting that each of Scheffler’s three victory runs immediately preceded a major gear switch. His five wins in three months in 2022 came shortly after he switched to a Scotty Cameron Timeless Tourtype GSS putter. Then his seven wins from March to August of last season came right when he switched again to his current Spider L-Neck gamer. Now he’s won four times in the three months since switching back to the K-grind wedge.
With Scheffler’s win wrapping up the major season, with him and Rory McIlroy both using the original Fujikura Ventus Black profile in their drivers and J.J.
