Costco has continued to make inroads in the golf hard-goods space since it first introduced a Kirkland Signature-branded line of golf balls in 2016. Earlier this year, the wholesale chain designed its first club — a milled Kirkland Signature KS1 putter with adjustable heel-toe weights and a SuperStroke CounterCore Mid Slim 2.0 grip.
“The steel and milling, plus the professionally milled insert, provide exceptional performance and feel,” said Tim Farmer, Costco’s vice president of merchandising, when the putter was initially unveiled.
The Anser-style proved to be popular, as golfers attempted to get their hands one, before Costco eventually ran out of stock.
On the secondary market, the putter sold in excess of its $149.99 price tag, with some paying upward of $250 to get their hands on the blade.
With a lack of supply to meet demand, golfers were forced to wait on Costco for the next KS1 shipment to hit stores. The good news is Costco received a shipment of putters last week that temporarily satiated the putter appetite. The bad news is it still wasn’t enough to handle the demand for KS1.
As of Wednesday, the KS1 was already listed as “out of stock,” with no restocking date mentioned. It took less than one week to blow through the most recent SKU. If you’re in the market for a KS1 and missed the latest shipment, you have two options: pay above retail — potentially more than $50 — or wait it out.
And while you’re waiting for KS1, you might want to ready yourself for Costco’s next golf club rollout: a 3-piece wedge set that’s already listed on the USGA’s conforming list.
With U.S. equipment sales hitting all-time highs in July, now is as good a time as ever to be in the golf club and ball business. Costco can certainly attest.
