6 must-have pieces of fall wear spotted at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot
There’s a chill in the air at the U.S. Open, and it’s not because of the diabolical rough at Winged Foot.
The highly-publicized postponement of this year’s U.S. Open from its typical spot on Father’s Day weekend to the third week in September presented a whole host of changes for the world of golf. Perhaps the least publicized of those changes is the climate in Mamaroneck, N.Y., which should prove to be significantly cooler for U.S. Open week than its originally slated calendar date.
While temperatures in the 50s and 60s are hardly game-changers, they do present a unique adjustment in the styles we see on the course. Suddenly, we’ve entered the fine line between sweater-weather, vest season, and traditional PGA Tour wear.
When it comes to playing in the fall (irrespective of whether you’re making a national championship appearance or simply teeing it up with your buddies), it’s critically important to have the right gear. Comfort and feel are everything when you’re trying to score low, and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice either to keep yourself warm when the temperature drops.
Here are six of the best pieces of fall gear we spotted during the opening two days at Winged Foot, from Bryson’s Q-zip to Xander’s pullover, Cam Champ’s sweater, and plenty more.
Puma Rotation Quarter Zip
For cooler days on the course, the Puma Rotation Quarter Zip has you covered. Literally. It offers stretch for a comfortable and light fit and freedom of movement. The pullover sports DryCell moisture wicking that draws sweat away from the skin so it can evaporate through the fabric. The polyester fabric is machine washable with little to no shrinking. The polyester is very resistant to wrinkles for less time ironing and more time out on the course. Design details include a slim fit, a contrast ¼ zip placket, a mock neck and panel detailing on the left side.
Nike DRY VICTORY
The Dri-Fit Victory top is a supremely soft, lightweight layer that easily wicks sweat away from your body and helps you stay comfortable from the course to the concrete. The Nike Dri-Fit Victory is the perfect addition to any serious golfer’s wardrobe, and is sure to turn heads on the course.
Adidas Lightweight UPF ¼ Zip
The Adidas Lightweight UPF ¼ Zip pullover features soft, lightweight fabric that offers breathability and moisture-wicking comfort. The fabric also offers UV protection against harmful sunrays.
Under Armour UA Playoff 2.0 ¼ Zip
The Under Armour Playoff 2.0 ¼ Zip pullover is an item you can take from the golf course to a night out on the town. It is extremely breathable, moisture wicking, quick drying, and UV protected, so you’ll stay cool and fresh in the heat. The fabric also offers comfort and unrestricted movement with lightweight construction and 4-way stretch. The pullover is designed with a self-fabric collar, a ¼ zip placket for easy on and off wear, and self-fabric cuffs with elastane for a snug fit.
J. Lindeberg Jello ¼ Zip Lightweight
The J. Lindeberg Jello ¼ Zip pullover’s lightweight construction will give you hours of comfortable wear and freedom of movement. The pullover also features moisture transportation, moving sweat away from the skin for a cool, easy fit. The Jello is designed with a brushed inside for warmth, a mock neck for additional coverage, ¼ zip closure for easy on and off wear, and zipped pockets to secure personal items.
Adidas Ultimate 365 Tapered
The Ultimate 365 Tapered pants offer extra stretch in the waistband for a full range of motion as you move throughout the fairways and between the links. These pants are constructed with recycled polyester to save resources and decrease emissions. These pants are popular from your average player to the top professionals in the world — GOLF.com highlighted these pants in an article detailing how to dress like Dustin Johnson.
