1. Southern Hills (Tulsa) [#]
Site of three U.S. Opens and a quintet of PGA Championships, this Depression-era Perry Maxwell design features holes that gracefully flow across a plot of undulating ground perfectly suited for golf. For decades, the land was smothered underneath a canopy of trees, but Keith Foster and then Gil Hanse have opened up the property for all to admire. Gone too are the clean-edged bunkers that never looked at home on a Maxwell design. Raves all around for how this course has evolved this century, as demonstrated by the exciting 2022 PGA Championship won by Justin Thomas.

4. Karsten Creek (Stillwater) [Y, P]
Karsten Creek was built for Oklahoma State University’s golf program at the behest of Karsten Solheim, the Ping founder. Deeply wooded corridors, forced carries and small, slick greens require precise drives and excellent touch on what is one of the most challenging university courses in the nation. No wonder the course has rocketed such players as Rickie Fowler and Viktor Hovland onto the professional stage. Lake Louise, named after Karsten’s wife, is a determining factor on the closing stretch, which finishes beneath the OSU clubhouse. Karsten Creek looms large on the college-golf rota, and will be even more revered after a renovation by Andrew Green.

How we rank our courses
For our newly released Top 100 U.S. and Top 100 You Can Play lists — a process that helped us create 50 best-in-state rankings — each panelist was provided a ballot that consisted of 609 courses. Beside the list of courses were 11 “buckets,” or groupings. If our panelists considered a course to be among the top three in the U.S., they ticked that first column. If they believed the course to be among Nos. 4-10, they checked that column, followed by 11-25, 26-50, and so on out to 250+ and even a column for “remove.” Panelists were also free to write in courses that they felt should have been included on the ballot.
