Mini-tour pro fires incredible 59 to close out record-breaking come-from-behind win

March 25, 2020

You may have thought that professional golf had gone quiet all across the world in light of the coronavirus pandemic. You thought wrong.

While the major pro golf tours — the PGA, European and LPGA Tours — are suspended and scrambling to reschedule tournaments for the fall, the Minor League Golf Tour forges ahead. And on Tuesday, it may have witnessed the greatest moment in the tour’s history, and, arguably, one of the best comebacks in all of golf history.

In the second and final round of the Fox Club 2-Day at The Fox Club in Florida, MLGT veteran Sunny Kim shot an incredible 12-under 59 to seal a come-from-behind win, becoming the first player ever to break 60 on the mini tour.

And it wasn’t a blowout victory. Kim began the round nine shots back of 18-hole leader Gavin Hall. He made eight birdies across the first 15 holes to take the lead by one, and then finished off the victory with a closing stretch for the ages.

Kim’s approach shot from 165 yards on the par-4 16th found the bottom of the cup, giving him an unlikely eagle to move to 10 under on the day. After a par save at 17, Kim needed at least a par at the par-5 18th to secure the win, but it would take another eagle to hit the magic number of 59.

After a perfect drive, Kim pured a 5-iron from 221 yards across water and landed it on the green. He then drained the remaining 25-footer to complete the feat in dramatic fashion. You can watch the clinching putt below, including an elbow-bump celebration that would make any virologist proud, via the Minor League Golf Tour.

According to the MLGT, it was Kim’s 67th victory. Already the tour’s career money leader, the $2,100 winner’s check and $120 from the concurrent skins game pushed his career earnings to $277,704. He joined the MLGT in 2006.
